  • If you've get noticeable noise coming from your turntable's motor it may well be a fairly simple fix if you have the time and patience. I was having a whistling sound from the motor of this Dual 1229 and was able to take the motor apart and re-lubricate it to solve the problem. I'll go step by step in the process. Hopefully this will be of some use for others with this or a similar issue.

Nooooo don't hammer the pulley motor! The cylinder can lose the center! You need special pliers to open the motor.

I'm glad it worked! But you are right, I was taking a chance using the hammer. I believe it's a "snap-ring plier" that I needed right? If I have to do it again I'll invest in them. And anyone watching take note. Thanks for your comment.

Never ever hit the end of the motor shaft with a hammer. There are several other safe methods to sepearate the motor sheels.

Getting ready to do this same repair. Tired of the rattle. But after 50+ years a little rattle is to be expected.

Not a good idea to hit the capstan shaft with a hammer. If you must, use a plastic head hammer to avoid peening over the end of the shaft. The bearing at the bottom could also be damaged this way.
3 in 1 electric motor oil, in the blue can, is 20 weight and perfect for motors and spindles.

Thanks for watching and appreciate your suggestions. You are among several that pointed this out. I understand that there is a tool that will do the trick better and safely. I'm learning as I go.

I'm glad you accomplished this motor repair, but I would refrain from striking the motor shaft end with a metal hammer. A soft end hammer, like polyurethane or nylon, will reduce the possibility of damaging the end of the shaft (making the pulley difficult to reinstall) or irreparably bending the shaft itself. Also, a pair of snap-ring pliers will help you pry apart the two halves of the motor housing without using a hammer at all. Then you can use a pair of "quick-grip" rubber padded wood clamps to evenly squeeze the two halves back together again after the lubrication job is done.

Great suggestions Murray. I appreciate you watching and offering these excellent suggestions. I'm unfamiliar with with "snap-ring" pliers and "quick-grip" clamps. I will add them to my tool box before I attempt my next motor repair. This is the type of feedback I need. take care friend.

@@elliottcrews4997 Thank you for keeping this classic record changer from ending up in the landfill. Too many of them are in the hands of people who won't put in the effort to save them. As you have shown in this video, they are well worth the effort and can provide faithful service for another 50 years if properly maintained. It may be cliche, but they seriously "don't make 'em like this anymore". Enjoy the fruits of your labor Elliot.

I used some snap ring pliers to separate the two outer shell pieces....no hammering

Just had my 1229 motor apart as it making making a terrible rattling sound. And my magnet ring was flopping around. So a clean up and epoxy glue that ring to the motor and now I’m up and running quiet as a mouse. Hopefully for another 50 plus years.

Glad it worked out! I'll remember that if I run into the same problem, just glued in back on with some epoxy glue ah! 👍

Good to know. Just acquired a non-working 1229 for $5 at a yard sale and it's going to need everything of a rubber, lubrication, and adjustment nature. Otherwise in good cosmetic shape. I bet the volk at United Audio didn't expect these li'l darlins to still be in use more than half a century later.
