Bill is amazing. He restored my 1229 a few years ago. He will talk you through the entire process. You cannot find a better more personal hands on person anywhere. So nice to see him sharing his passion with you in this interview.

My goal in life is to find something that I’m so passionate about that the “job” never feels like a job. It is inspiring to see a perfect example of this with Mr. Neumann.

Thanks so much for this interview. Love to see Bill's dedication to the craft. I was able to finally acquire the original Dual 1219 that was my childhood introduction into the audiophile hobby. TL/DR, this was my father's purchase back when I was a pre-teen, and after his death in the late 80's it sat in storage. Case and chassis are pristine, and dust cover is intact, but I've been dreading having to have this serviced and have only done surface cleaning and have not powered on to test. I'll definitely be having Bill's team do the service on this unit, I just want to see it properly set up and operational again, even though it will not be my primary turntable. - After thinking, had to add, maybe it will be my primary. Hope it's as good as I remember.

Due to my Dad being a fan of Dual I have followed along with that tradition. I was fortunate enough to find a 701 fully refurbished and ready to go for a reasonable price. It took a 90 minute ferry ride and an hour drive to get it, but hey, made an overnight adventure. Very happy with it.

I remember in the late 60s and early 70s a lot of Hi-Fi stores had their own service departments. Those that sold Dual also had a large supply of Dual parts on hand. You could replace a tone arm a counter weight, an idler wheel or the screws. And they could service them in shop. I still have a Dual 1209 from 1969. Even their base models were well built.

What a fantastic video. I love this type of video. Bill was so interesting to listen to. His passion for Dual is refreshing. What a wealth of information. I would much rather spend the money to get a very nice Dual than spend an equal amount on a new design turntable. The vintage equipment has just such a high level of quality, fit and finish. When you think about it, you can build an amazing vintage system for a lot less than a modern system and one that will last for years.

He learned it all himself. He's particularly mechanically inclined, so he mastered it because he enjoyed the challenge. I'm an electronics guy, & he's right that us Electronics & Mechanics guys aren't made of quite the same stuff. But I've spent the last few months running around fattening up my Dual collection; for the express purpose of learning how to fix them because nobody else really wants to! And IF, never mind WHEN, I acquire a certain degree of knowledge & proficiency servicing them, I will want to make my services available to the public at large. But not before! There's plenty of "hackers" out there, & I refuse to be one of them, taking people's money! A close friend recommended this video to me, thought I might find it educational or at least entertaining. Fortunately, Kevin & Bill did a wonderful job of making it both those things.
I'm not naturally mechanically inclined by nature. But I love these strange & wonderful Squarehead cuckoo-clock turntables with their Rube Goldberg mechanisms, so I will persevere.
    Wish me luck!🤞

In 1971 as a high-schooler I had my heart set on the new Garrard Zero-One Hundred Tangential Tracking Turntable. The salesperson at my favorite St. Louis area audio shop (the aptly named Hi Fi Fo Fum, which only just closed its doors a few years ago) talked me out of the Garrard in favor of a Dual 1219 with Shure phono cartridge. I'm forever grateful to that salesperson, and wish I still had that turntable today. Thanks for this great conversation.

That was the same story my dad had in 1971. Decision decisions. My Dad did not get a 1219, but a 1215S. I still have his table among my 10 Duals. Plus I bought a used1216 like his, in 1980. I have my Dads Both serviced by Bill and still going strong.

I've been to HiFi Fo Fum! My cousin used to live in the St. L area and whenever I visited we would go. I loved the LOOK of the Zero-100 but never bought one. Those needed a lot of maintenance over the long haul to keep working. Duals always seemed elegantly simple.

I worked for the Dual importer in the Netherlands up to and including the CS701 and CS601 repairing anything from 1010 to 1229 and also the Perpetuum Ebner turntables and totally agree on the 1000 series. My first "real" turntable was the CS701 with the Shure V15 later I had an EMT TSD 15 complete with shell glued into the arm it worked and sounded great! Thanks for the interview and feeling the kinship with Bill.

Duals are fascinating decks because mechanically they bear some hallmarks of lower end decks like record changers and yet they run like Swiss clocks, have very good specs and sonically are up there with some much more expensive turntables.
I have just spent a year slowly nursing a sick 505-1 back to health. It took so long partly because I never wanted to disconnect it to go on the bench as I was enjoying the music too much!

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to apprentice for these guys. Hell as a semi retired guy at 55 who loves all this stuff, and owned much of it in the 70's. The passion has to cut both directions. The desire to pass on the skills must exist also. Even if it takes years to find the right guy.

Great discussion. I learned a lot about my Dual 1019, which was my first turntable bought in 1969 as a student. Everything Bill said about the 10 series happened to mine. I had the optional 45 auto changer spindle that eventually screwed up the changer mechanism. I also stacked albums without knowing that it was verboten! The UA base came apart at the corners and I moved on to a Technics that is still going today with my son and grandson. Vinyl is back and so is the turntable and Dynaco A25's I bought in 1971.

I bought a new 1019 in 1967 while I was a junior in college. I still have it today in mint condition. FixMyDual overhauled it ten years ago and it still an amazing piece of equipment. Bill also overhauled my 1229Q. Back in 67 the main competitor was the Garrard Lab 80. Just visually, the Garrard was absolutely inferior. I made the right choices. Thanks Bill!

This was fun. Had my 1229Q worked on by Bill after it was damaged in a move (forgot to remove the platter off the chassis). Works as new now and is so satisfying to use. Thank you.

Just bought used Dual CS-731Q, and slowly fixing all the little problems with it. Having luck with it at the moment. Opened it up.. Absolute ridiculous electronic overkill! 4 boards inside, I'm loving it. Actually i like Dual because they give you gauges and adapters so you need never to use protractor tool when changing cartridges. Dual forever, my friends! Unfortunately I'm in Croatia, can't send it to Bill... But it's nice to know there are company out there which you can count on to fix your TT...

Nice interview. As an owner of a few Duals, I can testify their build quality is second to none. My one 1229 my father bought in 71 I believe. Still runs like new. I was taught at a young age how to maintain it. 50 years later and I still use it as my main, with the original Shure M91.
    Also have a 1229Q and 1249.

Good afternoon from West Michigan (near Grand Rapids...). I'm so glad I found this conversation regarding Dual Turntables. I still have my 1229 from the early 70"s. Works great-sounds super. I learned a lot and I appreciate Bill's "passion." Thank you both so much! Now I'm heading over to his website...

Really enjoyed this. I own a few Duals, 604, 1019, 1218, 1219 and 1229. It's nice to hear him share his appreciation for Dual brand turntable. Many audio snobs don't appreciate these and tend to dismiss them. too bad for them! I'm with Bill, I'm sold on them!

@@hurkamur1 I have a tough time settling between the 1019 and the 1229. Both of the ones I own are really good sounding and good looking with nice plinths. They compete for a place in my home office. I live close to a busy contry road and when heavy trucks pass by, the whole house shakes and sometimes affect the playing (skips). I find the 1019 to be a better tracker.

“I am a mechanic.” This is what I love about Duals. I have fixed up a couple of 510s. The belt-driven pitch change mechanism is genius! It is really an early example of the continuous variable transmission. Change the size of the pulley; change the speed. No electronics needed. Such a creative solution! I’m selling my Thorens. I have a good line on a Dual 701. No fear trying to repair it, but if I fail, FMD might be getting a call!

I was amused by the Thorens story using the Disc Washer. I have owned Thorens turntables for over 40 years and have always used Disc Washer. I learned right from the start that no pressure is needed. Very entertaining story, I enjoyed watching this video.

Just went thru Dual video. Fantastic. Thx. Such a relaxing and informative discussion.I think its easy to recognize when folks have the same love of the vintage stereo equipment and its intrinsic value. It has always been more than a personal life enhancement for me , passion for the great equipment and vintage sound started for me at ’Alterman Audio’ in new orleans. Sometimes i feel like my love of the hobby is unique in its mix of equipment , playing medium, and what i play. It feels like there is a balance in the listening experience with vintage equipment. My first turntable was a dual 1249 with Shure v15 type 3. I played on my 1970’s pioneer sx 727 and polk speakers. Years of joy. Thx for you channel and keep doing interviews.

I also wanted to comment on the production value of the filming and sound. Really nice camera work with traveling cameras , the editing and the seamless sound . It kept the visuals very interesting. My compliments to the folks that did that part of it. It never felt over produced and directed. And no easy task to do all that well.

Growing up,just a few miles from the City of "St. Georgen" (the birthplace and hometown of Dual) in the famous Black Forest, Germany it was pretty normal to own a Dual turntable in the family!!! I still have my 721, which i bought with my first own money (working constructions) back in the day and it's still running! Having great turntables companies here -even in the same state like Dual- as Acoustic Signature, Acoustic Solid or PE,i'm always come back to my Dual machines though (i have 3 in total)!!! 😂 And it's great to see, that the Dual 's are still popular around the World!!! Thanks for the Interview!!! Greetings from Stuttgart, Germany!!!

My first turntable was a Dual 1214, which served me well through the '70s. In the early '80s I picked up a 708q direct drive, which I loved because its 'ULM' (ultra low mass) tonearm/Ortofon cartridge combination could track even badly warped LPs without any issues (warpage was a real problem at the time). In the early '90s I bought what I thought would be my last turntable - the 'Golden 1'. Quite a beauty but needs a little servicing. These days I use an AR from '84, and have a Sota Star II (also from ~'84) that I plan to get up and running at some point. I have a thing for vintage turntables. I fully get the appeal of the '70s era Duals, and thank God there are people like Bill who can make them sing...

Fantastic interview! Hah-hah! I still use my Discwasher. I have always used it manually, i.e., I turn the platter by hand. Never wanted to task the motor for cleaning my records. I'm Bill's age.

The real thing about Dual turntables no more no less, fascinating conversation. In particular the description of why Shure or Ortophon . I have several Dual 1225, 1228.505-3, 505-4 and was about to buy a CS 5000 a few days ago but regretted it and ended up buying a 1219 and from what Bill said I think I made a good choice.

Interesting hearing your stories about being a mechanic. I never thought of it that way. My father was a mechanic. Learned his trade in the 8 Air Force on heavy bombers and raised my brother and I plying his trade to John Deere. Out here in Northern California we grow a lot of rice and my father always prided himself in making combines cut better than how the factory had them set up. This might be blasphemy for this program, but I have a Garrard Lab 80 that is a mechanical nightmare "under the hood." My dad died 14 years ago but I bet he would have been comfortable tearing into the Garrard like nobodies business and without any fear of doing so. Another good program and thanks!
