Kamen Rider Kuuga/The Beginning of a Legend- DavKav Review

DavKav talks about the 2000's Tokusatsu, Kamen Rider Kuuga, the Season that relaunched the Kamen Rider Franchise. Has it Stood the Test's of Time, or has it aged as poor as the Bill Cosby Show... OK maybe not that bad.

To me making Ichijou a Kamen Rider would be a horrible idea. It'd destroy the whole premise of this character, because he was supposed to be a "capable normie" like Taki from the 1971 show and he is maybe the best example of such trope. Besides even without being a Rider himself, Ichijou is way more badass than the majority of the modern Riders (if not most of all Riders). Giving him powers in the show would be like a bitchslap.

As a kid in Southeast Asia, I grew up watching Super Sentai and Kamen Riders. Death was a regular part of children’s television. As I was born at the tail end of the Vietnam War and the Secret War in Laos, my family had to escape from helping the CIA to defeat communism after the US troop left. So seeing people being maimed and tortured to death on a kid’s show was the norm for us children. Once in America, it was a hush and taboo subject around the dinner table and even more so in today’s home of the brave.

To be precise they try to revive the series with their last effort over Kuuga. So instead of making a show that kids will safe and laugh, they decided to kill some random people. And after the threat become more and more deadlier the main protagonist has to grow stronger.
After 2007 - 2008, Bandai [the Toy company] has it's influence over kamen rider series and start to lead the up coming series to be more flashy, more equipments for . . . you guess it . . . MORE TOY!!

Just finished watching the entire series and agree with most of your points. However, following ZO & J as attempts to make the Rider series kid friendly again after Shin Kamen Rider prologue, this was another attempt to make the series palatable to adult audiences again. Still, being Kamen Rider I'm sure kids still tuned in, and watching it with 32 year old eyes it still stands out as jarring with Black being the other series that is pushing the limit on violence. Regardless, enjoyed the review as a great way to cap off the series

I did take a bit of issue when you kept mentioning that 'Kamen Rider is for kids' when showing the horrific things that go on in Kuuga.
I won't deny that Kamen Rider is a kid's show and that it's made to sell toys. But just because it's made for kids, that doesn't mean it can't be a little bit brutal and hard hitting with heavy subject matter.
Why do you think shows like Avatar and Gravity Falls are so popular? Because despite being kids shows, they never talk down to them or shy them away from horrific subjects. Hell, one of the main subjects of Avatar is genocide.
