- Hey everyone! In this episode we update you on our 12th job.. yes, still in the middle of nowhere. Working in the alfresco with the team, GoPro style, Atikan's progress, time-lapse, the whole lot!
A massive issue in the construction industry is the concrete footings, and it is time that we finally address the issue on the scale of TH-cam. The concrete step into the alfresco does not work a full brick height, meaning we have to compromise by placing splits into the wall to make our gauges work.
Us as the bricklayers look like the fools.
This is due to volume builders contracting concreters with poor workmanship. I think it is unacceptable, considering on our purchase orders we are not meant to place any splits on the first course. Splits on the first course should not be an existing theme in the first place.
Hopefully this video makes a difference, but whether it does or it doesn't, we continue on this journey anyway.

The footing in Melbourne is absolutely horrendous TY. I was in shock when I first saw it. Everybody was just cutting the bricks using splits and 10 ml/20 ml splits. They even use splits for under the windows and doors as well. It was shocking to me cause these things are never acceptable in Perth.
We told the supervisors about it but they don’t seem to care at all. They told us to just cut the bricks and use splits and then charge them for it.
Feel bad for the owners of those homes

All i can say is 'get used to that my friend' if splits are needed to help maintain the gauge then you as the bricklayer need to do whatever it is to make it work.

Being in construction in nz ,, there is a lot of bad workmanship going on ,mainly due to housing companies keeping costs down by employing unskilled labour & pressuring people for time limits & jobs are quoted on sq meter rates so quicker you get the job done the more profit you make,it just means other people down the line have to compensate, like the tilers & brickies

Very interesting the separation between buildings, with such large windows facing the boundary line. This is to achieve maximum internal floor space on small land parcel size, no doubt.
Law still states: Dividing Fences Act in N.S.W the standard fence, is a 5' timber post and rail with paling. This offers no firefighting material between.
Windows in bathroom and toilet (WC) need to be obscured glass only. This is a privacy provision in the NCC Vol 2 2022.
Minimum requirements
900mm in from boundary containing windows.
Build to the boundary (with council approval) fire rated wall structure and window shutters with sprinkler system over windows.
Then there's the issue of noise transmission from buildings.
As a bricklayer on site, can you see an improvement to protect against the spread over fire?

As a bricklayer, I'm not entirely sure what we can do to prevent fire spread. We do have the occasional fire rated weepholes to installation, however that will not suffice. We can only hope that fire control outside of the construction industry is up to standard.

Hey there, depends on whether or not the volume builder you work for raises extras for splits, usually in the form of a cutting allowance.

Do you write up a contract before starting a job with the builder stating your price , I know the builder and your self would have had to agree on your quote.
Is unforeseen jobs/time in your contract.
I'm working for a volume builder. Orbit Homes (in the video) is one of many volume builders. What that means is rates are already set with allowances to make up for any discrepancies. Brick rate, sill rate, cutting allowance and many other things are included in what is called a Purchase Order that outlines the price of a house that you will build in full detail, with these rates. Many businesses, like mine, often start out in volume building before eventually making the transition to private work where you can start to name you're own rates. It's a completely different game, some are even comfortable doing volume building, but I'm sure I'll get it documented here on the channel when the time comes.

Hey there, that is just the standard shape of the mud board here in Australia
Typical concrete slab, no policing of concreter workmanship in Australian. After 40 years as a bricklayer this will only change when the bricklayer starts quoting the code. Your should issue a site instruction so that it doesn't come back and biters you. Any bricwork be it splits or headers above grove level is non compliance. In nsw brickwork should not even overhang concrete no more than 15mm otherwise non compliances. Most builders and supervisors are desk jockeys. 😊
I would of put splits in patio area. It would of saved having to put splits around most of the house
But you gotta gage down from the window. Just gotta put them where they need to be
@@dragginmedown yeah i know, maybe a guage would fit? There are 4 guages on the rod? I would go a thinner guage. To make that split a full brick? Prob would work?
I havent watched the entire vid intill now. Ty says some places needed splits, on side of house. Yeah its concreters fault. Only fixable with splits here and there

Most slab pourers go to top of the formwork, i dont pour slabs myself, but most do it that way,
