    Very interesting video mate. 5 in 1 mix in U.K. for bricks and we use a plasticiser instead of lime in this day an age. 6 in 1 mix for thermilite block work. Keep up the good work !

      Thanks for that! We once used plasticiser with hydrated lime in our mixes a couple years ago, however lime juice has recently come into the picture, and we haven't looked back

    There's a reason for putting half the sand in the mixer before adding OPC and that's because the cement sticks to the drum of the mixer and you can get lumps of OPC and therefore the mix is not thorough.
    Also like here in pommy land your sand is full of impurities which over a period of time means the mortar break down prematurely. I try to buy washed building sand but it's getting very difficult to come by.

    Cement half way just mixes through with the sand better. But do what you like 👍

      I agree, I like to throw it in after 8 shovels,and then the last 8 shovels,I have a video on my channel where I threw a batch in only taking a minute and it was also useable and ready to pour in that minute, probably wouldn't have been ready if I through the cement in first

    Hi Ty, do you use the high clay content 'fatty' sand or can you achieve the same creaminess with plasticiser etc?

  • @jamtime4978

    I'm not gonna lie. This is very different from how I make mud on a day to day basis in WA. Regardless, it is very interesting to see

      Yeah we would throw bucket of water 1 bag mortar mix and 15 shovels of sand 3times.prolly fill 3 wheel barrels.

    Hi does anyone know if you can use this type of rotating drum mixer for stucco? Why do stucco mixers have paddles that rotate instead of the drum rotating?

    Hey mate just thought I’d give you a tip you don’t have to have your mixer at its make height it might help a bit to lower it you won’t get as much splash back

    In the US the cement or Portland and lime is pre mixed in the bags, type s has the most Portland and used for block, type n is brick, these are just 2 of the most common types, they're are many types all based on cement/lime ratios known as mortar.
    Also we use a different type of mixer

    • @jamtime4978
      @jamtime4978 ปีที่แล้ว

      We also have general purpose cement that comes with the lime already added. It's not exclusive to any country.
      Also, the mixer used in this video was a side tip mixer. It's not quite as common as a regular mixer and isn't necessarily the most used one in Australia.

    I just use a square shovel at work and shake it so it’s a relatively level shovelful do 8 a bag of cement, 2 level Shovelfuls of clay and repeat the 8 level shovelfuls of sand

  • @scottnever8732

    lime juice is called plasticiser in UK, you are right in adding smallest aggregate first, again not the uk way. Also we rarely use buckets, 10 shovels to half a 25kg bag

    • @bricksbyty
      @bricksbyty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A whole lot of different! Thanks for watching the video!

    • @steviezeee1904

      Two different things, I have never used lime juice before, but we add in plasticisers to add in extra air into the mortar, to improve workability

    WTF you dont use plasticizer? your mix must be such hard work man. In UK all our houses are brick and you will not find a builder who doesnt use feb in the mix to make it all creamy. Thats mad to see you do use lime in it though? This literally makes no sense. feb / plasticizer eliminates shrinking and cracking during the dry and cure process but also makes it feel like super creamy and the snots dont drop so easy. any mix needs this! concrete, plaster, mortar etc. Mind just blown to see this mix looks like hard work man.

    • @bricksbyty
      @bricksbyty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! We use a liquid lime that acts as our plasticiser. In this video, it's called 'Lime Juice'

    not filled to the top you're still guessing volume. Use a mortar mixer not a concrete mixer. Use a respirator.

    If you wanna gage the sand like that in buckets you gotta fill them to the top and scrape them flat

    • @bricksbyty
      @bricksbyty  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there! I find if I fill them right to the top for all 6 buckets it seems to overflow the mixer. On these buckets there are lines inside to show a measurement, so I just go off that!
