    Good review! I just bought the Timex a few days ago. I bought it because a couple of reviews said it was a very reliable watch and I like how it looks far better than a conventional chronograph. I got it with the green face, which has yellow orange subdials which look very different and really nice. I bought an orange band to go with it and it looks great. I’m sure the Seiko is an excellent watch, but to me, it looks like every other basic chronograph in the world.

    Until I saw your video I would not have given the Timex a second look but the Timex has really grown on me.

    Both seem like good watches. I do like the overall look of the Timex though. I think the arc's in the Timex give it this sort of map and compass type of feel which is really appealing to me.
    Good review, btw.

      Thanks for watching! I agree the Timex has a more interesting dial.

    Scrolling down through your videos I found this gem. audio was low. Had to turn off the dryer to hear it. However nice video. I have the timex in blue. very rugged. I work in agriculture and use chrono every day in summer to time irrigation water. It stays wet all day with no problems. as a foot note I also own a timex t45181. I like that watch even better. So much so that I bought a spare and left it in the box just in case

      Yep this is one of my older videos with an inferior microphone. Glad you you enjoyed it nonetheless.

    Thank you! I was wondering how the Timex chrono function worked, also couldn't find out what the maximum chrono time was (4 hours). Cheers

    Thanks for the insights! One problem with the timex is that even though it's supposed to read 1/5ths of a second, there aren't ticks on the dial for this and I'm thinking that this watch has less than fifth of a second accuracy because of readability on 1/5ths.

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an excellent point! Doesn't matter how accurate the watch is if you can't use the accuracy!

    Just ordered the polished stainless of the Seiko (SNDA57), and I'm very excited. Generally how does hardlex hold up? Hardlex is like 8/10 on hardness scale compared to 9/10 for the sapphire crystal. I heard some people bang them up.

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congrats! I hope you enjoy it. I'd say it holds up marginally better than a mineral crystal.

    Are the chronograph buttons on the Seiko easily activated and can they be activated by accident with say long sleeves?

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question! The buttons need to be pretty compressed in order to activate the chronograph. Also, the button retention is pretty tight and they don't articulate unless you push them intentionally in my experience. I wear long sleeves all the time, it's never been a problem.

    My friend had a simple Timex that ticked very loud. The chrono in this Timex does that but what about when the chrono is off? Really thinking about giving myself a Timex for Christmas.
    By the way, nice review!!

    Thank you for such a detailed and informative review. I've been looking everywhere from different companies and I've narrowed it down to three: Timex, Seiko, and Infantry Co. That last one is a company in Hong Kong that make very affordable timepieces, I'm talking in the ranges of $10 - $50 however there are not many reviews around. It was a tug-a-war for me because I'm looking for reliability but not so much on precision; I'm not looking for accuracy by the second, I just want to know if the hands say 7:15PM it's in fact that time. Also, I want a watch that I wouldn't mind breaking or getting a little dust on it, or God forbid, have it stolen (welcome to Los Angeles) and lastly for EDC purposes. That's why I did purchase an Infantry Co. IN-064: it's inexpensive and in a few days I'll examine it's functions and quality.
    www.infantryco.com/product/in-064/
    As far as style, with this one I would wear with jeans and a buttoned-shirt with the sleeves rolled up, going for that casual-formal look.
    Which brings me to these two. From these two that you reviewed, I'm looking for a secondary watch that has functionality, aesthetics and looks great for everyday business wear. After all, these are also pieces of jewelry and from my perspective, a great looking timepiece for us men is equivalent to great looking shoes for women. I'm looking for something that has style and when I'm dressed formally for business, someone would say, "hey, nice watch" and be taken seriously.
    I've only recently transitioned from wearing t-shirts and jeans to buttoned-down long-sleeve shirts and dress pants, so the digital watch with a calculator had to go. Though I'm not yet in a place where I can purchase a Rolex or a Breitling (but will soon if I keep it positive), I feel these or others similar would be the right way to go.
    The Seiko is impressive and the chronograph looks to be a lot more active, but for some reason it reminds me a lot of Saul or Reuben from "Ocean's Eleven" (2001) but then I wonder which one would Danny Ocean wear (if these were the only choices)?
    The Timex looks like something Rusty would prefer. And his style is more my style. Plus it is designed very well, the spaces and position of the sub-dials where well thought-out. Especially the positions, at the 10 and 4 o'clock. It reminds me a bit of the old-fashion dials of steampunk engines.
    I'll think about it for a few more days. If you have any input, that would be great. If you kept these watches, since November of 2013, how has the coating of the Timex held up? I'm very careful with watches so I wouldn't expect it to peel off on me so fast.
    Thanks again.

      @555Gear  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comments man, the Ocean's 11's comparison is pretty sweet! Sounds like you have a pretty good sense of what you're looking for. Both of these watches should hold up just fine in the long term. I no longer have the Timex but it's coating was solid during it's stay in my watchbox.

    I have 2 different models of the Timex watch and the reason I like them better than any other chronograph is that they have a separate second hand. I hate a chronograph that has a second hand that is also the chronograph and simply sits doing nothing until you use the chronograph.

  • @kevinflynn14
    @kevinflynn14 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I dont like the second hand and the chrono second hand full sized from the center. Sieko is more traditional look obv, but in this case better look.

    Nice and informative comparison review, this.
    I think the Timex is the better looker of the two without sacrificing anything to the visual functionality aspect, if you see what I mean. It looks nice, but folk will still think that you mean business ;-)
    Also, in spite of all that has been crammed into the Timex face, it still does not look cluttered. A very good design.

    • @555Gear
      @555Gear  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comments! The Timex's dial layout is definitively more distinctive. Having two full size seconds hands working independently can be a bit crazy, but the subdials do a good job of getting out of the way. It really looks great in this vintage-style colorway, which tones things down a lot.

      555 Gear Here in the UK on Amazon, the price difference is almost twice as much for the Seiko at approx. £143 depending on what time one looks, and for what particular colour of the Timex one goes in for.
      I am still thinking, but am now leaning towards the Seiko, as I get the impression that it is a little more 'solid'. Decisions... decisions... ;-)

      Wow, that's surprising because the Seiko is easily found for $50 less than the Timex here in the US. Good look finding a deal either way!

      555 Gear Yes, strange how international pricing works.
      And to top it all off, and for fear of boring you to death ;-) I have come across this, which looks like a discontinued model, for £80. Original price, allegedly, double that. No lume though, but I am contemplating (*_*)

    I know that Timex is cheap crap really. But is has a very interesting design. If that was from IWC or Jeager it would a five thousand pound watch. Obv, mech moments etc.

    I'm looking at the Timex and thinking why the fuck don't they remove the seconds hand and use the chrono sweeping hand to show seconds instead. It really simulates the mechanical watch look. Also as usual for Quartz shitters these watches are way too big and way too thick.
