I'm ordering two, in different dial colours in a few days. I have three other Timex watches I've bought in the last 2 months. They are surprisingly accurate. Sometimes they are priced well below list if you are patient, and look around. They were so affordable that I'm going to invest in a small toolkit, and caseback press with the savings. Then I can do battery changes myself on the Timex's, and the higher end quartz watches I own. As for "ambience" ... buy a watch for what you like, and what it can do for you. Trust me nobody else notices, or cares about what's on your wrist unless it's on fire.
Say what you will about Timex, but my Expedition has been on my wrist through rain, snow, and mud. It's been in my wrist when I've fallen out of rafts and climbed over mountains. It still looks good and still keeps great time. Plus it's at a price point where if it where to float off my wrist down a river I wouldn't freak out.
I just ordered one based on this review. I currently have an expedition field metal watch and it performs great. I never have trouble with Timex which is why I never hesitate to order another one. Excellent value for the price paid.
Hey I bought one based on your review. I love it! I am in the medical field and it perfect for taking vitals and seeing in low light condition. I also love the fact I don't have to babysit it
My only criticism of this model ( I own 2) is the loud ticking and the bouncing second hand that does not hit the second marks. Price wise its a good value and is accurate.
One of my best and most reliable watches is my 1970s Timex automatic. Keeps better time than my modern Tissots or Seikos.Only my Orients keep better time.
Outstanding review on an outstanding true field watch offering from Timex. I've had mechanical Hamilton Officer's pieces and enjoy the Scout just as much for its style and overall utility. Well done!
I have a Bertucci A-2T field watch. It was much more expensive and I really like the Timex. I will do a review on it on my channel. Thanks for posting!
I really like Bertucci watches, they are pretty much the best cases you can get for around $100, very nice sculpted Ti. I'll definitely check out your review when it comes out.
great job on the review and great job to timex on a design love the dial and strap color , I love weekender and generally don't have issues with size but that is a really nice improvement ..
Thanks for watching! Yep I think both sizes work on average wrists, but this is a nice slightly larger offering which doesn't make any "fashion watch" mistakes.
yeah..I use to have among others a timex - electric ..which was a pre-quartz battery watch ..eventually sold it and never made a video :) ..but I like timex ,has a lot of history
Really cool watch. I recently purchased the Scout T499619J. The case has a gunmetal finish to it. I put a camouflage strap from Crown & Buckle on it and it looks spectacular !! I have received far more compliments on it than I have on any of my other much more pricey watches. You can't beat this watch for the price !!!
It’s funny listening to someone call 38mm a “unisex watch”. 5 years later, the trend in men’s watches is going back to the 35mm - 40mm range. Good review.
Very good review. I’ve just ordered mine. It was the brass case you mentioned that appealed to me as my clipper compass should not be affected. Plus I still get a metal case, rather than my plastic cased timex camper. 👍
+555 Gear Are you folks referring to the Timex Forty Leather? www.amazon.com/Timex-T2P4959J-Weekender-Display-Leather/dp/B00LW3RCW8/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1454820288&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+forty
we are (at least i am) referring to this watch www.amazon.com/Timex-T49961-Expedition-Scout-Watch/dp/B00HYUSWPE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454827763&sr=8-1&keywords=timex+expedition+watch
I have a couple of these, and use them for work and as a watch for the gym. I work outdoors in all weather. it is very rugged and durable. The indiglo is perfect too. For the price, it's perfect for me.
I just recently bought Timex's intelligent quartz fly-back chronograph and it's excellent, however it's definitely not a 30 dollar watch. The rest of my watches are either automatic or mechanical but sometimes it nice to just put on a watch you don't have to wind or set. Timex has some nice time pieces and it; "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking"
For me it's always funny when Americans call 24 hour time, a military time. 24-hour time is standard time in all European countries (mayby except UK) and for us callin it military time is pretty strange. It's also more practical than 12-hour time.
555 - I just picked up the "Timex Acaida". This watch came out this year ( 2015 ) and has a plastic case, and a plastic dial. Reminds me a lot ( and is the only watch that Timex has made to date the most closely matches ) my 1989 Timex military windup watch. Of course, it's a quartz watch, but still, take a look at at and tell me what you think ! I've had mine for about 2 month now, and it is more accurate than my $350 Traser P6600 swiss quartz watch ! hahah
I noticed that many of the Timex watches are made in the Philippines including the movement. Are these watches accurate or do they always run slow or fast?
Great review. I just got my Expedition Scout in the mail today and absolutely love it. I got the off white face/brown leather version but swapped out the straps for a NATO strap. One thing I noticed on mine (and in your video) is that there's a shadow/ dark area on the bottom off the face when indiglo when engaged. I was thinking mine was defective but it seems to be common all around. Please advise further if you know any more about this. Thanks
Hey, just wanted to drop in and say how great I found your review. I've been wearing the weekender for the last year and for the past few months I've been looking for a watch to step up to both in quality and size. I've looked high and low and bought a couple of seikos but I was never content. I found this watch on the timex website and while trying to dig up more research on this watch, I found your review! Great high quality video and high quality content and knowledge. Appreciate it!!!
I was wondering...can they upregulate the ticks per second of the second hands on quartz movements? That way you would get the look of a mechanical movement paired with the accuracy and precision of quartz movements...in a way the best of both worlds, right?
I have timex Indiglo back plate no. W9 , Indiglo light appeared permanently if you change battery and screwed up the 4 screws and if you loose the right down screw the light appeared . Indiglo doesn’t work with the crown , this type of timex should be reset ? If reset is required where is the reset point .
Thanks! I love Hamilton, three years of heavy wear and zero issues. I'd love a new Tudor Ranger or an IWC Mark field watch, but this fits the bill until then...
Very good video! I own a 49271. It is I.S.O. certified shock proof and water resistant to 100m. Mine also has a snap off case back. Do you think that it can handle 100m water resistance considering it is a snap off case back and not a screw down?
Its nice, needs to go on Dark Grey NATO... But I wonder, is there a quartz model like this with that Dark Grey/Black dial and White (only) hands but in a "stainless steel case" in this ultra-budget segment?
Hey 555 Gear, is this watch durable (what activities can be done wearing this watch)? I read a lot of the Amazon reviews mentioning that this watch is poorly constructed and the crown would break after a few days of wearing.
Yes. I've had them in various forms for 25 years. No leaks. Ever. I swim, kayak, sweat, etc. No problems. Get the ones with the metal case, not the resin case ones. The two of those I've had were not nearly as good as the Scout series.
I’ve had the Seiko 5 made in Japan model for a year and 2 months and I’m looking at this watch to replace it. Had to send it in for repair 7 months in because the auto winder screw backed out and started making rattling noise. I seen the loose screw inside the clear backing inside the watch. Then I had to jump through hoops to get it repaired. They wanted to charge me almost 150$ in repairs for a watch I paid 90$ for that was under warranty. Poor customer service. Finally after a year and two months the watch keeps stopping. It’s cheaper to buy a new watch then get the battery replaced so I’m looking at this watch now. Hope this helped. Good luck. 👍
Saw your review and was convinced to get one! Loving it but is it normal for the indiglo to not glow at the bottom portion because it has been bothering me it doesn't light up there :(
I'm actually very torn between this and the Seiko 5 SNK809. I like the aesthetics of both, but don't know wether I'd miss having a feature such as the indiglo or not. At the same time, I'm also wondering how easy it is to tell the minutes on the seiko vs. the timex. Timex minute hand has that pointy edge that goes all the way to the lines for minutes, which the seiko doesn't. Any input?
Daniel M.T. The Seiko is a smaller watch. If it was me, I would get the Seiko because I have girly hands, also I prefer an automatic to a quartz watch.
I have read online many people complain about this watch. Usually its about the stem that falls for no reason apperantly. has anyone encountered this problem?
Not sure if you bought it yet, but the clock assume every month is 31 days. So you have to manually change it. I do NOT own this watch yet, but i'm thinking of getting it.
knifeforkandaspoon Green is alway looks good (to me), and wont get that "dirty" look after a while since the darker color conceals stains and dirt better than tan.
Hey +555 Gear, Could you provide me with the link to the Timex Expedition Scout T499629J as you provided the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot H64611535 in your video titled, "$30 Watch Vs. $300 Watch: What's the Difference? Featuring the Hamilton Khaki & Timex Expedition"? Please.
Bought this watch and the crown popped off after just six months of light use. The second hand is also very out of line with the markers. It's a cheap watch.
Is the mechanism on this loud? I have a timex expedition T499979j and it is driving me crazy with how loud it is!!! I'm curious if they are known for that or if I got a lemon. I've literally had people sitting next to me tell me how loud it is!! Lol
+555 Gear thanks for clearing that up. In general, are automatic movements quieter than mechanical? I'm going to be upgrading my everyday watch in a month for my birthday. I normally like to leave it on for everything including shower and sleeping. I'm looking at some of the seiko's you have reviewed as well as possibly a Hamilton. Any recommendations on a quiet field watch that won't drive my wife and I crazy with its loud ticking if I sleep with it on? Love your channel.
Mechanical movements are a lot quieter, but so are most quality quartz movements. Seiko quartz movements are a lot quieter for example. Both Seiko and Hamilton make quality field watches at affordable prices. Looking to spend a bit more? Look into Weiss Watches, an interesting new brand. Above that, there is the lovely Tudor Ranger.
I only know of issues with the Indiglo light. Setting the date is purely mechanical, via the stem. Look up changing the battery to see the insides Plastic movements make sense in and ELECTRONIC watch. Nothing to short out on... Real World Stuff!
Yes, this watch is unfortunately terribly loud (ticks.) I really wanted this watch to work for me. Its odd since many cheaper and lessor quality watches are near if not totally silent. Also I think cheap (synthetic) cases actually absorb noise so idk...
In the dark one can tell that it's RUNNING! Ever think of THAT? You never have seen night combat? I didn't think so... My resin model still ticks just fine. Has a nice guard around the stem.... 2mm smaller face... But the same movement inside...
A great looking watch at an affordable price but the movement ticks loud. Why can't timex make a quieter movement when companies like casio or citizen can make one at such a cheap price? The movement ruins the watch.
Simply a beautiful and user friendly watch. Slightly loud ticking but no drama. I just love it.Perfect watch.
I'm ordering two, in different dial colours in a few days. I have three other Timex watches I've bought in the last 2 months. They are surprisingly accurate. Got one recently. Can only hear the tick if held against the ear in a quiet room. So far, no issues.
I bought one a couple days ago -the black one - and it is amazing.
boy, to bad they didn't leave the brass alone and leave it it's natural color. Would be nice polished up
Good point!
Outstanding review on an outstanding true field watch offering from Timex. I've had mechanical Hamilton Officer's pieces and enjoy the Scout just as much for its style and overall utility. Well done!
Thanks!
I have a Bertucci A-2T field watch. It was much more expensive and I really like the Timex. I will do a review on it on my channel. Thanks for posting!

Ingersoll, which was purchased by Timex, made military watches in the 1940s and earlier.

i have two Timex;one black camper with velcro nylon strap and Timex Traditional Analog with brown leather strap.
Thanks for watching! Enjoy those Timex watches!
they now have a leather strap version of this one. Loved this review! helped me pick this watch.
Yes, I saw this in the store recently too glad you commented!

By the sound of the man's voice in this vid, I can only conclude that I never knew Edward Snowden reviewed watches on TH-cam. 😎
Great review...I recieved alot of info more than I thought possible
Thanks for watching!
Like your intro, straight forward!

The featured watch here tracks the second to face perfectly, mine is off a bit but a solid time keeper

Hi, I can't find that exact model, with the shiny case and white handles, now they are all opaque
Nice review & recommendation, buddy ...I may well get me one of these as my weekender.
I was wondering...can they upregulate the ticks per second of the second hands on quartz movements? That way you would get the look of a mechanical movement paired with the accuracy and precision of quartz movements...in a way the best of both worlds, right?

The RESIN Acadia is very close.
Lighter!
Another NOS $16 on eBay.
Great review. Looks like I might grab a Hamilton....
Thanks! I love Hamilton, three years of heavy wear and zero issues. I'd love a new Tudor Ranger or an IWC Mark field watch, but this fits the bill until then...
Very informative review!
I'm definitely gonna buy this watch but I can't seem to decide between the green and the tan strap.
Very good video! I own a 49271. It is I.S.O. certified shock proof and water resistant to 100m. Mine also has a snap off case back. Do you think that it can handle 100m water resistance considering it is a snap off case back and not a screw down?

Great review, your camera work is fantastic! What camera do you use?
The date can't be set with the crown, unless you forward the hours, it comes in the manual.
The battery is *Made in Indonesia* that's my country 😎☝️😁
Hey 555 Gear, is this watch durable (what activities can be done wearing this watch)? I read a lot of the Amazon reviews mentioning that this watch is poorly constructed and the crown would break after a few days of wearing.
Love the Timex brand 👍 !
Nice review
The size of the wrist of the person matters, and 38mm works for many. Its a timex, with consistent quality and good price point.
My expedition is WR 100m. The other ones I've seen recently are only WR 50? Did they change them?
Can it withstand seawater and swimming? I know that 5bar WR is not enough but Casio claims their watches are suitable for swimming.
Yes. I've had them in various forms for 25 years. No leaks. Ever. I swim, kayak, sweat, etc. No problems. Get the ones with the metal case, not the resin case ones. The two of those I've had were not nearly as good as the Scout series.
Hi, which one do you prefer between Timex Expedition and Seiko 5?
Does Timex has a loud watch sound? Thanks.
I’ve had the Seiko 5 made in Japan model for a year and 2 months and I’m looking at this watch to replace it. Had to send it in for repair 7 months in because the auto winder screw backed out and started making rattling noise. I seen the loose screw inside the clear backing inside the watch. Saw your review and was convinced to get one! Loving it but is it normal for the indiglo to not glow at the bottom portion because it has been bothering me it doesn't light up there :(
Glad you like it! How much of the light isn't working? That may be a defect...
Watch at 7:52 in the video. Its normal for this model Timex and a few others.
A Nice Review! Thanks!!
Very detailed review! Good Job!
I have the Timex easy reader watch. It's very robust.
I'm actually very torn between this and the Seiko 5 SNK809. I like the aesthetics of both, but don't know wether I'd miss having a feature such as the indiglo or not. At the same time, I'm also wondering how easy it is to tell the minutes on the seiko vs. the timex. Daniel M.T. The Seiko is a smaller watch. If it was me, I would get the Seiko because I have girly hands, also I prefer an automatic to a quartz watch.
Daniel M.T. but the seiko snk is only 30m water resistant thus making it not very durable in rain and wet jobs
If the case was made in stainless steel and had 100M of water resistance, I would buy one in an instant!!
What is the difference between Lumibrite and Superluminova?
I have read online many people complain about this watch. Usually its about the stem that falls for no reason apperantly. has anyone encountered this problem?
No.
I love the look of this watch, especially the one in green. Just one question though, how do you change the date?
Just by the mechanism in the crown, pull out to the first stop it works!
555 Gear
I see, so has it got more than one stop? if you know what I mean. Pull it out one stop to change the date, and then another for the time?
That's correct!
+555 Gear then what if the month has 30 days not 31?and btw is this watch mechanical?
Not sure if you bought it yet, but the clock assume every month is 31 days. So you have to manually change it. I do NOT own this watch yet, but i'm thinking of getting it.
Will it fit on my small wrist without going everywhere and sliding off
Nice watch! Especially for the price
Thanks! It is a good value.
Nice review, thanks!
How old is the watch now? And is it still working?
Is there a black line that runs around the case close to the dial?
Great video by the way
Great review. I can't decide between the beige and army green bands.
knifeforkandaspoon
Green is alway looks good (to me), and wont get that "dirty" look after a while since the darker color conceals stains and dirt better than tan.
Hey +555 Gear,
Could you provide me with the link to the Timex Expedition Scout T499629J as you provided the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot H64611535 in your video titled, "$30 Watch Vs. $300 Watch: What's the Difference? Featuring the Hamilton Khaki & Timex Expedition"? Please.
I prefer the Timex expedition compass watch. The band is the only issue.
Bought this watch and the crown popped off after just six months of light use. The second hand is also very out of line with the markers. It's a cheap watch.
No shit it's like 40 bucks
Will this look good on a nato strap ? Perhaps....
great review !! love it..
Thank you!
does anyone know if they have this style watch with a light button, i have a similar watch from infantry, but wish it had a light button
Bought two of these, the turning pin fell out of them both!
Is the mechanism on this loud? I have a timex expedition T499979j and it is driving me crazy with how loud it is!!! I'm curious if they are known for that or if I got a lemon. I've literally had people sitting next to me tell me how loud it is!! Lol
+Patrick Stevens Yeah it's super loud, not a lemon, they are all that way
+555 Gear thanks for clearing that up.
+Patrick Stevens Timex actually takes some pride in that loud tick. Kind of played into their slogan, "Takes a licking, and keeps on ticking!"
Hi, i have been watching few rewiew it seem to be a problem with the adjustment date can you be so kind and verified.
I only know of issues with the Indiglo light.
Setting the date is purely mechanical, via the stem.
Look up changing the battery to see the insides
Plastic movements make sense in and ELECTRONIC watch.
Nothing to short out on...
Real World Stuff!
is their any full black versions of this watch?
There are at least a half dozen versions.
Look on eBay or Google the things!
It is funny that I can hear the ticking sound every time the camera captures the watch
Does the indiglo function stay on or do you have to hold down the button? If it does stay on, for how many seconds. Thank you :)
I have the exact same watch and all you have to do is hold it down but it does not stay on after.
@@colerhodes4977 ok. Thank you!
Quick question, where can I buy leather straps for this?
every store that sells leather straps, you just need a 20mm one
How long lug to lug?
What is your wrist size?
please try out the Timex rugged metal
I have a timex like this one, 2 seconds accurate per year, the battery is dead now.
+Cipi SixZeroFour pretty accurate! And it's right twice a day even now!
A good micro screwdriver pops the back off.
CR 2016 LI battery
A nylon jawed Panavise pops it back on...
Does it make a lot of noise?
Mine ticks fairly loudly. You should probably listen to one in person and decide for yourself. These can be found in most big box stores.
Ok, ty :)
Just got mine, no noise at all.
how water can it handle?
Is there model for the ladies?
can you show pictures of timex expedition in brass that has chipped? cause i cant.
Can anyone tell me what the difference between the reference numbers mean?
A great looking watch at an affordable price but the movement ticks loud. Why can't timex make a quieter movement when companies like casio or citizen can make one at such a cheap price? The movement ruins the watch.
How do you use the indiglo?
By pushing the crown
It's only small on the wrist if you want to wear a tank on your wrist.
Is it a 7 or 10 yr battery?
+TheWiczman 7+10=17. You're welcome.
I'm can't decide which one to purchase, this one or Seiko 5 SNK809. If anyone would have some suggestions, that would be more than welcomed.
