    Tesla should let customers know what battery they will be getting in their vehicle. No different than knowing whether you’re paying for a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder ICE car. In fact, it just might be illegal for Tesla to withhold this information.

    Love your channel. You pack in lots of valuable info into each video. How about some comments about Tesla CCS1 adaptor? I live in Canada and currently every competitive EV can travel to more parts of Canada than Tesla. The promised (Oct 21) CCS1 adaptor would make Tesla competitive again. I'm sure this is a growing issue in US too. I'm starting to recommend other EV's to friends who want to travel away from the main highway corridors - even though I love my Tesla in every other way.

      @@LoanwordEggcorn I just keep hearing about constant upgrades, for instance the new surfer batteries that can add hundreds of miles on a charge. Just knowing my luck I’d buy one then a huge upgrade like that would drop the following year.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coryp4200 At this point, the technology is mature enough that there aren't major improvements. The current Teslas are incredibly good. If you got one today, you'd probably still love it in 10 years.
      There are no major improvements in batteries. The improvements are all incremental, like 5% to 7% better each year.
      If you're thinking about solid state batteries, no one has them in production yet, and to get them in production would take many years of development. And at this point, Lithium batteries are improving so much that solid state batteries may not be much better. That's part of the reason why they're not available now.
      That's not opinion, it's what the solid state battery makers themselves say. Quantumscape had a presentation that essentially says that.

    Rivian has a patent for a series parallel switch that would allow the car to run on 400v but charge at 800v by halving the battery and connecting it in series to charge and reverting back after charge. It makes a lot of sense when the inversion happens off board the vehicle.

    It seems to me that the supposed benefits of the 4680 cells are not panning out for Tesla. They were supposed to be able to be manufactured more quickly because of the dry coating process, yet it seems that making enough cells for a mere 1000 cars is a huge struggle. I hope that Tesla figures their way out of the 4680 production hell quickly, or they are going to have to just abandon the whole idea and just go back to using 2170's for all their vehicles.

    1:30: How can the same car chassis use both a structural and non-structural battery pack? It sounds as though the chassis requires the pack as a structural component in either case, and all Tesla has done is to change the structure of the pack itself using the 4680 cells. If so, all packs would be "structural" packs. Has anyone crunched the numbers on the actual gains in terms of gravimetric and volumetric energy density when going from 2170 to 4680. Not on a cell level (we've already seen those numbers), but on an overall pack and vehicle level?

      Yes, Tesla must be making two slightly different chassis, with different methods to install the seats. Both chassis likely have both front and rear gigacastings, since the Berlin cars have 2170 packs and reported to have both castings. Adding the rear only mega casting version made in Fremont and Shanghai, that makes 3 different chassis for the Model Y, all certified for sale and in production simultaneously.

    I think MY 4680 delivery will be aligned with the delivery date of orders placed post price hike. This will be a good justification for Tesla to deliver cars at different price points and for the new owners to feel that they’re getting better car for the money.
    One of the points my Tesla advisor has mentioned is that you can push the delivery date only limited number of times, after that either you take the delivery or forfeit the deposit and place in line.
    There will be little chance for orders placed before rate hike to decline the delivery in anticipation of getting a 4680 car.
    I feel this is a good strategy from Tesla.

    For the 800 volt architect, they should be able to split the battery into two 400 volt sections and use those in parallel for driving and in series for fast charging. That would also make it easier to replace a bad cell, you would only need to remove one battery section. If you have a serious battery problem you could still drive on the other section, and not be dead on the road. Almost forgot, no need to change the current motor wiring.

    It is a common misconception that higher voltage equals faster charging. It does not, at least not for the reasons people think. The battery can take a certain amount of Power, which is what matters. Increasing the voltage won't increase this power. Only a few percent gain will be had with higher voltage due the reduced resistance in the cables and wiring. The benefit is marginal though.
