The white stuff is aluminum corrosion from dissimilar metal electrolysis. When there are electrolytes in water, such as salt or many others, it causes electrolysis to occur. In the case of aluminum, it acts as a sacrificial anode, similar to zinc, that is used on boat prop shafts and on the hull.
I'm no expert but doesn't electrolysis only happen when electricity is introduced to the mixture or does the electricity just speed up the reaction I've always seen electrolysis done with electricity
@@coltonkoepp655 Regular electrolysis does only happen with electricity because electrolysis is making a non spontaneous reaction spontaneous by introducing electricity. Dissimilar metal electrolysis happens without any added current because the electrolyte the metal is in is charged enough to cause electrolysis. What the guy is saying is right, but the aluminum just has to be in direct contact with whatever cathode like steel or iron there is in the gun. But yeah dissimilar metal electrolysis specifically relies on the two metals in one electrolyte solution to initiate a reaction. For example, just the moisture in the air is able to cause pitting in gun barrels due to lead deposits.
Awesome comment and cool to see the corrosion. I used to work in marina and your comparison to an anode is 100% correct. Some of the anodes I’ve seen come out of salt water have had to be completely chiseled off because they’ve gotten so eaten.
This same reaction is actually generating oxygen in deep parts of the ocean. The metals dissolved in the water columb starts to reform into rocks at the bottom of the ocean and starts to catalyze and generate a charge separating the oxygen and hydrogen. It's in extreamly low almost undetectable quantities but it's a fairly recent discovery. They call it "dark oxygen."
Not sure if anyone really mentioned it, but the reason the salt water one didn't rust as much is because of the lack of oxygen in the water. Metals and coatings are normally tested via salt spray. Rust is Iron oxide, so the lack of oxygen inhibits the rust quite a bit. If you added aeration or did a salt water spray the results would be different.- Small edit- ASTM B117 is the testing methods for metallic objects and coatings and simulates a highly corrosive enviroment!
@@plasticoflamingo2952the oxygen in the water isn't available for the reaction with the steel. It needs dissolved oxygen from the air to react with metals, the reason salt water speeds up corrosion is because it's a better conductor of ions than regular water and promotes an easier path for electrons to move in the reactions. The enclosed box full of water has little to no oxygen to react with the steel, if the box was open the air would corrode it much faster than the lake. I'm a chemical engineer
no one tortures weapons in war to see how long they resist. This is stupid idiocy. the AR15 is less reliable without continuous cleaning because it has no piston and the gases dirty the mechanisms. The latest and most expensive versions of the AR have the piston and so you have an answer
Mud tests have been done and they make AK fanboys extremely angry. I don't think it would fair any better than the AR here. What basically kills a rifle is mud getting into the locking lugs. That's what happened to the AR here since the mud completely infiltrated it. But when mud is splashed or dunked on, like it would in combat, it's extremely difficult to get mud into the locking lugs (even with the dust cover open). But AKs have big locking lug recesses that are far more exposed, and the components don't seal well. Meaning when mud is splashed or dunked onto the AK, it quite often ruins it until you clean it out. As for which is better, I asked a Ukrainian soldier what his brigade thinks, as well as the general attitude in the ZSU. They love ARs, or anything else that isn't an AK. They're frustrated with the poor quality control, poor modularity, and poor accuracy of AKs. They're just stuck using them because 5.56 is kinda rare, while 5.45 is very common. Many soldiers have nice ARs but can't use them very often because they can't get ammo. Officially in the future, the Ukrainian military is going to adopt the CZ Bren-2, which is a derivative of the AR concept.
@@hedgeearthridge6807 Interesting info, thanks for sharing! None of those issues with the AKs are of course inherent to the AK design (well except the sealing and bigger more exposed lugs, mostly thinking of the Ukraine ones), more telling of how poorly made a lot of them are. Still, the AR-15 is a fantastic design, and especially since it has been constantly iterated on for 60+ years by now, it has reached a real high point. Though naturally if you were to spend that much time working out the kinks of almost any gun platform, it'd eventually perform really nicely. =) (Which is not to imply AR-15 was especially problematic early on, quite a few of the reported problems weren't down to the design of the gun.)

Scott, first thing I do to all my new AR's is pull the little O-rings off the extraction spring, they can prevent chambering rounds when brand new... They're only there for when those springs wear out and need a little help, but not necessary for all of them.
Not gonna lie... this hurt a little bit to watch. My late father entrusted me one of his AR-15s. Seeing what these ARs went through has made me well-aware of the importance of maintaining your guns no matter what the condition!
Should have tried the ammo from the pond gun in the ice gun to see if it would have functioned, also I’m thinking there might have just been some crud in the chamber on the mud gun that kept it from going into battery.
I also have a radical ar and it’s not had one malfunction. I put it against my buddies expensive rig and mine outperformed his. Only paid $350 for mine😂
"This thing looks brand new! You would never even know that this has been in my deep freezer for over a hundred days." The pools of steam coming from under the barrel shroud:
My bet is the pond scum and mud built up in the receiver tube and inhibited the spring function, partially clogged up the chamber and was causing the mag/bolt interface to be wonky

Wow! I was riveted! An excellent video!
I sincerely appreciate the entertainment!
This kind of content will certainly keep me from straying to any other table - smashing TH-cam channel!
Seriously, thank you
God Bless America and God Bless You Scott and Merry Christmas
Scott, first thing I do to all my new AR's is pull the little O-rings off the extraction spring, they can prevent chambering rounds when brand new... They're only there for when those springs wear out and need a little help, but not necessary for all of them.
Not gonna lie... this hurt a little bit to watch. My late father entrusted me one of his AR-15s. Seeing what these ARs went through has made me well-aware of the importance of maintaining your guns no matter what the condition!
I'd imagine the anaerobic environments inhibit some of the rust seen with the larger body of water: the pond (more O2).
It doesn’t scare me that Scott has a bunch of high caliber weapons. What does scare me is that he has a wood chipper.
Merry Christmas Scott. New Subscriber from Tennessee.
So store all my ARs in ice, got’cha. Thanks for the advice Kentucky.👍
24:39 “The goggles do nothing!”
I like the look of the Pond Scum AR, I'm going to talk to my Cerakote guy and see if he can duplicate the look!
Should have tried the ammo from the pond gun in the ice gun to see if it would have functioned, also I’m thinking there might have just been some crud in the chamber on the mud gun that kept it from going into battery.
@KentuckyBallistics as a suggestion. I would like to see that same test on top tier high end brand AR's, and a few AK's. including the PSA GF3 AK
its rumored if you got your start in gunsmithing at sdi, you still couldnt fix that bolt catch! lol
The gunsmith's choice to work a stuck bolt, the warhammer, was a nice little cameo.
Radical makes decent products. They constantly do factory tours and post production videos. Can't beat it for the price!
I’ve had 3 of them, none of them would get through a mag without malfunctions. Radical makes cheap trash.
@@thewatchorn Lemme guess, you work for Daniel Defense?
@thewatchorn why has mine never had a malfunction nor anybody else Iv met lol daniel defense but be ur daddy
@@thewatchornMust be user error. Mine has never malfunctioned at all. Not even a stovepipe.
I also have a radical ar and it’s not had one malfunction. I put it against my buddies expensive rig and mine outperformed his. Only paid $350 for mine😂
Hey Scott, have you ever thought about a video on the MTR-8 revolver? It's a weird one that i think you would have fun making a video on😁
Merry christmas to scott, Scott, tactical rex, and all! ❤
"This thing looks brand new! You would never even know that this has been in my deep freezer for over a hundred days."
The pools of steam coming from under the barrel shroud:
7:12 "If I lived in Alaska or Antartica, I'd totally buy one of these."
Says the dude who's already bought one of these. 😂
Interesting results, thanks for taking the time to do this.
After seeing Scott sweat in the heat all summer I have to say I LOVE seeing him in a light jacket knowing he was comfortable filming!
Also that pond AR looks AWESOME despite how messed up it is
I have a Radical rf15 thanks for doing those tests on it I like mine and haven't had any problems with it for the price its a great AR
Little Debbie Christmas Tree cakes are my jam!
look for the lil debbie tree cake dip recipe. its addicting
Dude, if you like those try out the little Debby Christmas donuts. Fantastic!
That little chuckle from Sr. behind the camera @ 27:30 😂
Participated in the Alemio presale today-super smooth process and incredible potential rewards!
Maaaannnnn, that charging of the mud-gun gave me goosebumps alllll over 🥴😖😖😖
Id let 11:25 for the most genuine reaction ever filmed on this show. ❤ then proceeds to re-enact a civil war cannoneer🤣
Scott should do a video where he cleans the pond and mud ARs and see if they fire.
I compliment you Scott on the perfect "would ya look at that".
My bet is the pond scum and mud built up in the receiver tube and inhibited the spring function, partially clogged up the chamber and was causing the mag/bolt interface to be wonky
Great video Scott. Me and my wife love your videos!
InRangeTV called, they want their mud back. lol
InRange gang
That TRex is such a Grinch! 😂
The intros are so good😂😂😂
Awesome stuff! I loved that great fun to watch. Keep it up, awesome
Love the videos keep up the great work. Love from Alberta
I knew reptiles were cold blooded but shredding a Christmas tree is just cold.
4:49 the rust on that makes it look like a sweet colour combination…, black with copper/rust coloured accents 😎
