Travelling to Bacolod from Iloilo by ferry, Philippines

  • How easy is the journey from Iloilo city on Panay Island to Bacolod City on Negros Island? Websites offer differing and outdated information on ferry companies and timings. My hotel receptionist was also no help at all. In many hotels around the world - hotel receptionists would hold vast knowledge on how to move between local cities, but mine was clueless.
In this video I caught a ferry between the two cities, then navigated my way by trike to my designated hotel which I'd reserved in advance. Foreigners are not entitled to Senior discounts in the Philippines, but some can avail of a discount at the discretion of each establishment or travel company.
Negros residents have a love for knowledge and works of art, and at Silay City there are a collection of heritage mansions built during the height of the Philippine sugar industry's success, of which Negros was the very center.
Whilst in Bacolod, you should definitely make a trip outside the city to Talisay City to see "The Ruins" the ancestral mansion of the family of wealthy sugar businessman Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson. Built on a 440 hectare sugar plantation in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, in the early 1900s and now under the private ownership of the great-grandchildren of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and Cora Maria Osorio Rosa-Braga, the family have preserved it in its ruined state, among operational farmland, as a tourist attraction or hired for events.
The Philippines should be on everyone’s bucket list with its beautiful white sand beaches, fabulous idyllic islands, turquoise sea and stunning scenery. The Philippines is a traveller’s paradise and regularly included in top ten favorite places to visit in Asia and affordable, favorite world holiday destination.
Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 per month.
Filipinos are welcome and warm people. Filipinos are often regarded as the most friendliest nation in Asia and nicest people in the world. English is widely spoken throughout the country. The Philippines is included in the top ten English speaking countries in the world. The majority of Filipinos are highly proficient in English, so it is very easy to strike up a conversation and make new friends.

Recently broke up with my thai gf currently live in the UK. I said to myself come November i will book a 3 week travel aroud the Pi. Explore a new place. I been to Thailand so many time's its all become dull and predicatable trip. I watched a couple of these travelling vids you made about travelling around the Philippines, it made book another trip back to the land of smiles. I dont understand why the Philippines is such a difficult country to visit. I have been 2 in the past but its just so difficult for me to come back and experience it once more. Thanks for sharing my the way.

I first visited Thailand in 1988. Already then it was such an easy place to travel around. I was there again this January - all bus times posted up clear to be seen. Why can't they do that here? Went to a bus station this week, asked for bus times - was told 6, 7, 8am. Turned up at 6.45. 6.30 bus had just left. Next bus 7.30. WTF.
You need to be very patient to travel here. But if you're able to laugh it off and not get wound up - it's well worth giving it a go. Best wishes.

I did that trip Iloilo to Bacolod, among others. It’s exhausting with the constant haggling, delays and confusion. I did it for the experience but prefer not to deal with it. Perhaps Thailand is better for me.

Hes lucky he gets the senior discount in some places as its only ment for Filipinos and permanent residence like the srrv holders.
Other than that its at the discretion of the establishment.

One hundred and twenty pesos beer in hotel is cheaper than in a retail side road shop in the Seychelles. A 500 ml can local beer in a shop is around 215 pesos and an imported beer around 315 pesos. If you are thinking to buy a beer in any decent hotel here think above 500 pesos for 500 ml beer.

The hotel's logic about only 10% discount because you are only one, is non-sensical. If that was the case, there would be a difference in price for any place that gives a senior discount. One of the most frustrating things is hotels in the Phil. One time I paid for early check-in, only to arrive on time and they said "room is not ready". Fast forward 2 hours later, room is available and I asked for refund for the early check-in fee. They refused and even after calling the manager. At a different hotel in a different province, checking out the hotel room and was told 1500 pesos per night. Room looked good and ready to check-in. Then they said 1700 pesos per night. My Filipina said no, you said it was 1500 pesos. They denied it and said "no, we are 1700 pesos per night".

The staff are not trained very well. Particularly frustrating when the management are also clueless. They only think of their immediate gain - other places would have said you can have the 1750 Queen room the following day for 1500. So they lost a customer. I transferred to a much nicer establishment who were happy to see me AND give a 20% Senior discount without question.

  • @davidbush131

Your interaction with the hotel clerk reminded me of those old Consumer Reporter segments on the nightly local news.
"Why are you advertising a 20% discount and then switching to a 10% discount when I turn up?" "This is Phil Bigg, BWC News, reporting..."
There clearly is no truth in advertising in the Philippines. I'm just glad you didn't call her lazy. 🙂

    The reasons are:
    1. nobody is taking care of any content in Internet
    2. every ferry is „maybe“ going
    3. Filipinos haben gaaanz viel Zeit zum hingehen und dann einfach warten
    4. it’s more fun or headache in the Philippines 🤣
