one of the primary improvements i've heard about the mkll over the original version is you don't hear the steps as you adjust the input level via the knobs.
Great review, I have the exact same unit and love it, I mainly use mine to record video and capture clean audio, the slate button is great, very easy to sync.

Glad you found the video useful! Yes running on batteries alone will cost you a small mortgage lol Im glad you found the setting to enable plug in power and your right I did forget to mention that. Good catch!
Hi Paul, Many thanks for this excellent review of the Tascam DR60 Mk2. It's very helpful. I'd like to ask you a couple of questions. What is the max size SD card that it will take? And can I connect this to the mains via a USB lead? I'm hoping to record some sounds from a beehive and I need to leave the unit running for a long period of time.
This is a really great recorder. I has a fatal flaw, it does not release xlr connectors. I don't care too much about that as Its permanently connected to my Mix pre D. Tascam haven't remedied this quirk and in my opinion, that's why it continues to be sold cheaply. Its a great bit of kit and a bargain.
I used to own the older version and the XLR plugs would get stuck in it from time to time. So far, knock on wood, I haven't had any XLR plugs get stuck in this one.
Thank you. The information about power supply was especially helpful. May I ask a question about the illuminated screen ? Can it set to stay illuminated?
Christopher Cox As long as you use an external power supply the screen will stay illuminated as long as you are using the external power.. If you run it on battery only the screen will only stay lit up for 30 seconds and then shut off.
This video was very helpful but I'm trying to figure out which external power you used. I'm pretty new to this because batteries haven't been lasting enough. thanks.
+Wendy Martinez Wendy thank for writing. Here is a link for the power supply I am using. The best part it cost only $5 and it lasts for a good 6-7 hours before it needs to be recharged. I decided to go with two instead of one big one because one could stay changing while the other is being used. Swapping them out is a simple 30 second or less job. I hope this helps you some. www.fivebelow.com/tech-products/portable-rechargeable-battery.html

Good Information about the Dr60d MK11, I am fairly new to this system, I have a VIdpro XM-55 Mic but I am Having problems getting sound from the Mic to the units not sure if I have it setup correctly. I have tried all the different ports and still have not been to get sound from the Mic (Not sure of the proper setting?) Please Help!!
Can anyone explain why when in recording the audio levels are almost non existent? They're so low but I have the dials maxed out. The gain is set to low, because someone the noise sound will be too much if I up the gain. Is this true? How can I make audio louder? I've tried 4 different mics they're all too low when recording through this. Is cranking up the gain the only solution?
Hello, cool vid! :) I just got the tascam DR60 mkii myself and I used it once. After that I have 2 questions: 1. I use it with RODE Videomic (NOT the pro version) and i find it pretty quiet. I have set the gain to HIGH and turned it to max on the front pannel. With this settings I get just about -20Db max (normal conversation). It is said that -12Db is optimum. When I use the videomic with DSLR (Nikon d7000) it is definately louder. 2. I also use it with an external battery power supply (great idea by the way!). But I do not use any AA batteries paralelly. The thing is - every time I turn the device on, it asks me to set date and time again. Is it OK? A friend of mine who has another version of tascam says he never had to set time and date again even if he changes batteries or so..
Thanks for writing. When you set the gain for the mic input did you use the in menu gain or the external gain knob? You can use both to balance everything out. About having input the date and time overtime I haven't had that experience. I have only had to set it once and thats it.

Can i hook it up to the dslr so the audio and video will be already together? I'm looking toward simplify the work flow so i don't have to do it in post. Thanks for the video btw:-)
Yes you can very easily. This Tascam DR60 Mk2 has a port for camera output. You simply connect a 3.5mm cable from the tascam directly in to the mic input on your DSLR and you have nice clean audio going directly to your camera. Then you have a much better sound in camera and a master audio in the Tascam. Having two copies for audio comes in handy.
Thanks very much for this Paul - very good intel Does this mean that I could also use the same mains > USB charger that I use to charge my phone, or external battery pack?
Yes it does if your cell phone charger has an open USB port that you can plug a USB to mini USB cable into. Simply plug the USB end into your cell phone charger and the mini USB so into the Tascam. Now you have an endless power supply.
You haven't mentioned the brand and model of the power bank you're using. I used one which appeared to work at first and then the Tascam would freeze/lockup. I couldn't even power it down. Is there something I should know about Mah/Volts/Watts. I'm not so savvy on this kind of stuff. Also I would want to use it for phantom power (14.8v I think)

Hi Paul, thanks for the video. I'm looking for a worthwhile power supply myself but the links you have to your unit keep dying and it would help if you simply put the name and model here written out so people could find it themselves. Don't see that information here now and it's kind of frustrating. Just a thought from a longtime editor. : )
Are settings saved when you turn the unit off? How about when you remove the batteries, or does it revert back to factory default settings? Also, I'm not interested in making separate recording and what I want to do is to pass through the audio directly to my camera. Will this DR60 handle that okay? Thank you.
Hi Vlogger! Yes, the unit will keep all settings when you turn it off. Yes, you can run all audio into the Tascam, regulate it for proper audio levels and then send clean leveled audio directly to your camera. You can record master audio from the Tascam or just use it to pass audio through it so you can record on camera only. I hope this helps you. If you have any other questions just let me know. Cheers!
Paul, My setup includes the Tascam DR60 mk2, alongside a Rode NTG-2, and historically, when going over the final product in editing, it is always extremely quiet. For quite some time I've tried to use the internal and external gain (as well as ensuring the headphone volume is reasonable) to make sure my final product matches what I hear through the headphones (Sony MDR-7506) during production. Have you had any experience with the Tascam and this issue? I've considered the possibility that it is an issue with the microphone, but your video gave me the idea that it could be an issue of having too little power via battery power? Wondering if AC power may boost the signal. Thanks!
John Plato Tumala As long as your camera has a 3.5mm microphone input you can run a cable from the camera out on the Tascam directly in to your microphone input. They you will get clean sound directly into your camera and a master sound track.
Hello and great info covered here. I just p/u the Tascam DR-60D MKII and am pretty much a beginner. Curious, is it best to connect directly to my NIKON DSLR camera for video recording w/ audio or record audio separately from the camera? Still confused on what side to approach there? I would be connecting a shotgun mono Rode via 3.5 mm jack. Thx -- Mark in Vancouver, Canada
+Mark Glover Masterson You can run sound in one of two ways. First you can run your camera with it recording sound and then run the Tascam by itself for a master sound track. The only issue with that is most camera pre amps are not very clean and can cause a lot of hiss or static. The second way you can run it is to run the mic into the Tascam and then run the camera output from the Tascam directly into the mic input on your camera. The advantage of that is you will be getting a clean hiss free sound going directly into your camera. It will give you a much cleaner scratch audio just in case you need it for an emergency backup or something. I hope this helps you with your recordings. Cheers!
+Mark Glover Masterson you want to run your mic to the tascam and then you can output the tascam audio to the camera. Your camera built in pre amps will be much noisier than those of the tascam so thats your best bet.
I don't know if this is still relevant you still use these or can remember but I'm having trouble finding a standard power bank level change to fast chargers are these safe to use with this recorder please any help would be absolutely appreciated would be awesome thanks mate awesome recorder eats batteries like nothing
+Kerr Holmes The noise you hear depends on the camera that you use with it. If you use it on the Panasonic GH series camera you will need a small inline ground loop isolator. They are about $10 and will completely eliminate the noise. I hope this helps some.
Hi Paul. Thank you very much for your video. Im from Argentina, so excuse me if my english gets wrong. I need to ask you the folowing question! Im musician and I want to buy this tascam to get sound from nature, from streets, from life. But I also wish to connect it to the computer to use it directly. Is that possible? I mean, can I power the Tascam with USB from my computer? Thank you very much for your contribution!
Galapagos Producciones Thanks for writing. Ok let me answer your questions as best as possible. 1. Yes you can use this recorder to record any sound you want except you will have to have a microphone attached to the Tascam because the Tascam does not have internal mics. 2. Technically you should be able to connect the Tascam to a computer to record sound directly from the computer. The Tascam has a camera low and high input. Both are a 3.5mm inputs so you should be able to run the speaker output from the computer directly into the 3.5mm input on the Tascam. then you can monitor what is being recorded with headphones directly from the Tascam. I hope this helps answer your questions?
Hello budy, how are you? I am from Brazil, and I have a doubt in this recorder, every life I put the headset, I hear a small noise, this noise has to eliminate? Detail, do not need is recording to hear this noise, just plug the headphone, please would like you to help me!
I'm a beginner and recently purchased this recorder. Just wondering if I'm missing something, but I have my camera's mic input connected to the camera out on the Tascam and my shotgun mic connected to the camera in jack. I'm not picking up any audio from my mic. Maybe an issue with the settings, or the cable I'm using?
Kyle thanks for writing. Are you connecting your mic with a 3.5mm plug or with an XLR plug? If your using the 3.5mm plug you will have to go into the Tasca setting and enable channels 3/4 so it will pickup audio from that input. I would imagine your only using the first two channels and they are only for the two XLR inputs on the side of the recorder. One other thing. In the menu setting for channel 3/4 there is also a low, medium, and high gain setting. Check your input and gain settinsg and I bet you will get it working in no time. Hope this help. Take care!
I set it to record channels 3/4 in stereo. I'm using 3.5 cable with the camera in & out jacks and have also tried the 3/4 jack. It could be a mic problem since it is not very high quality and seems to be having battery issues. I guess I could try my lav mic. Which is the best input on the Tascam for the receiver on the lav?
If you are running your line into the camera line on the Tascam Dr-60 you may need a cable like this. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/906960-REG/kopul_ach4_25mon_line_to_mic_attenuator_cable_with.html Or as Paul said to plug it into the 3/4 input port!
I used a 6600mah rechargeable external power supply. The same type you would use to recharge a call phone or tablet. When I was using it by itself it powered the DR60 Mk2 for about 6 hours easily. I was on a 14 hour shoot with it and I used one power supply completely and then had to switch to the second one. I use two separate power supplies instead of one large single one because it allows me to use one while the second is charging plus the smaller ones are easier to work with. Here is a link for the exact one that I used in this video review www.fivebelow.com/tech-products/portable-rechargeable-battery.html I hope this helps you some! :)
+Paul Kepner This link is dead! What model/manufacturer battery did you get? I see other 6600Mah units but Amazon seems to say they're all much larger than the one you show here.
Christian Josue Yes you can use this with a Sony HDR-700 camcorder. Just run the audio out form the Tascam directly into the mic input of the camcorder.
Charlie if I don't keep AA batteries in them when using it with an external power supply the recording will stop if the external power supply dies or get disconnected for some reason. They act as a backup.
Paul I tried to love TASCAM, but the pickups are pretty bad. I bought a Cerwin-Vega CV1624FXUSB Mixer & the pickups are phenomenal.. no static, no mushiness, whatsoever. So I bought the TASCAM 20x20.. static, mushy, but the USB 3.0 interface is amazing.. unfortunately their software & firmware leaves huge room for improvement, along with the mic pickups. So I just started the return paperwork today. I love the MKII safety recording feature, but I could never live with the pickups or the fact that they don't offer 24-bit 192 kHz FLAC file output to the SDCard.. huge miss on both for me.
I wanted to setup a recording studio & my original speakers back in the day, I built with Cerwin-Vega 15's.. So I'd been watching them on Amazon when they came out with powered speakers. When I saw the USB mixer popup online I bought the TASCAM & the VEGA at the same time to test. I am really glad I did that. While I haven't used the USB 2.0 interface yet.. the pickups sound so good that I'll be keeping this regardless of how that goes. Keep your eye out.. they may have a field recorder coming out around the corner. I emailed them & we chatted a bit, so if they run with my ideas something better will hit the market sometime next year.
The mic preamps are exactly the same. What's changed is the quality of the gain control. Gone is the digital segmentation. We now have smooth gains & fades.

Curious, is it best to connect directly to my NIKON DSLR camera for video recording w/ audio or record audio
separately from the camera?
Does this remove any need for post syncing ? -Since both souund and picture now flow into the camera..-
It makes it much easier because you will have great reference audio
I don't know if this is still relevant you still use these or can remember but I'm having trouble finding a standard power bank level change to fast chargers are these safe to use with this recorder please any help would be absolutely appreciated would be awesome thanks mate awesome recorder eats batteries like nothing
How do you turn phantom power off??
can you use it as a USB audio interface for the computer?
I heard it picks up a lot of noise how do I resolve that issue?
But can you or do plug wireless mics to it?
Yes you can. Plug the wireless mic receiver into this recorder and you will be all set for recording audio.
Very Good Review!
Thank you :)
Nice review, it would have been better to get close up of the recorder as well.
how many bit or kHz oes record?
can we use line out to pa speaker?
Hello. Is it important to really ever use camera out or camera in features?
nice review, thank you !
What type of output does your lav mic have? If it is XLR then use inputs 1 or 2 and if it is 3.5mm then use input 3/4.
If you are running your line into the camera line on the Tascam Dr-60 you may need a cable like this.

Or as Paul said to plug it into the 3/4 input port!
very informative tutorial thank you :)
+mark fountain Your welcome!
What external power supply did you use and his long does it last?
Paul Kepner is it 5 Volts ?
Christopher Cox Yes it will run on 5 volts. The same you get from a cell phone charger
+Paul Kepner This link is dead! What model/manufacturer battery did you get? I see other 6600Mah units but Amazon seems to say they're all much larger than the one you show here.
+Dylan Kelley try this link and see if it helps

thank you, very useful!
So is this just strictly for a boom mic?
No not at all. You can plug any type of mic or sound gear into it with either a XLR plug or a 3.5mm male plug
Can i use this with a sony HDR700?
Christian Josue Yes you can use this with a Sony HDR-700 camcorder. Just run the audio out form the Tascam directly into the mic input of the camcorder.
Thank you so much
Christian Josue You are more than welcome. I am glad I could help :)
Thank you!
what external battery pack is that?
+Jeff Kapp Here is the link for the power pack that I was using in the video
www.fivebelow.com/tech/6600-mah-battery-banks.html
+Paul Kepner how long do they last?
+Jeff Kapp They last a good six hours each
+Paul Kepner awesome thank you! I just ordered mine and I'll have to go pick up a few once i get it!!
+Paul Kepner what connector do you use? They are two different usb's
Not the greatest Idea to store those AA batteries inside the unit as back up! keep them separate, just a suggestion. :)
Charlie if I don't keep AA batteries in them when using it with an external power supply the recording will stop if the external power supply dies or get disconnected for some reason. They act as a backup.
+Paul Kepner oh no I get what your saying. I just wouldn't store them in the unit while not using it.
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Love it
Genius... thx

its a quick review yet you're just talking so long about battery, im sure u can tell us more than that
Sweet taste of blood!
mic sounds awful on this recording
Joseph Poirier I agree it could be better .
Joseph Poirier that's cool! I didn't even know Cerwin-Vega made audio mixers.
Joseph Poirier I will keep and eye out for one
I wouldnt trust that velcro
Thank you!
Your welcome 🙂
