- Over the last few weeks, we've gotten quite a few enticing reasons to pre-invest in Aperture Laboratories: from the planks of tomorrow, to test-optimized bots, to the last word in pre-emptive defense, the Home Safety Turret. Today marks Aperture's fourth and final Investment Opportunity video, and if it doesn't get you reaching for your special investment wallet, you wouldn't know a can't-miss opportunity if it was staring you in the face, yelling at you about boots.

fun fact: if you pay attention to the sequence at 0:12 there is a small detail that says "if the portal device fails to produce portals, the black hole may need to be carefully restarted by carefully throwing 1 or 2 miniature german stick grenades into it" and if you look at the legend to the left, there are tiny german stick grenades included in the portal gun

I get how shitty management at Aperture was, but I'm still confused at how literally no one was interested in a gun that makes wormholes and boots that literally negate fall damage. Not even the army?
Aperture is clearly one of the most advanced groups in the HL multiverse, ahead of even Black Mesa, I’m assuming they actually do sell enough technology to fund their expansions but they blitz through money so fast and are so up to their neck in lawsuits they’re perpetually on the brink of bankruptcy.
Also it seems they’re a private company that’s very bad at applied uses for their creations, so they don’t have many usable products for their breakthroughs and they don’t have public shareholders to boot Cave from running the company into the ground.
"expensive as hell" is generally not what military wants, not for grunt level equipment at least.
Aperture is extremely good at engineering and extremely bad at business. They also invented an AI that murdered them all.
If you think about it, portal gun is useless outside of Aperture's facility, except on the moon.
@@youreadthisinyourmindright2604 Common misconception. Moon rock is simply stated to be an _effective_ portal conductor, not the _only_ portal conductor. After all, how else would their tests involving earlier models of the thing be able to operate before they got their hands on moon rocks?

@@FFKonoko My idea: The black hole is the battery, and the cooling is for the rest of the device's functional components.
If the wirring stops then that means there's nothing stopping the black hole from exploding.
Whether or not the wirring is caused by the component responsible from preventing the explosion or merely a dependent one is unknown to me.

i love how the boots always making the person land on their feet is an explanation for why you automatically orient yourself to be head-up even when falling through a portal head-down in-game

black mesa: we made a cool suit and shotgun and led to the world's downfall
Well with a total disregard for human life, financial stability and plain old common sense science gets done quicker
Black Mesa accomplishes more groundbreaking things but ends the world
Aperture Science creates a new form of travel that bends space-time and boots that cushion the fall of any impact that could save lives or at least help break a few less bones but merely creates an AI that kills all their researchers

Removing fall damage from a portal based platformer and making A whole ass animated science slideshow documentary is 100% valve and why I love them.
They added braces to the feet in the first game specifically because playtesters were asking about fall damage, according to the developer commentary. This is more of an extended in-universe explanation. Still beautiful, of course.

Beyond being really funny, its actually a great idea. Imagine a boot and glove system, like an iron man suit, that wont let you fall

That would be really counterintuitive, because your body tries to regulate falling. It would definitely take some time before getting adjusted to the equipment, and even then it's very much a question of how that equipment should function to create a harmony with natural body movements instead of trying to regulate or even contradict them.
One thing is certain: Boots with a strip of tire at the end certainly won't get the job done.
The turrets also use springs to shoot the entire bullet, casing and all. Its 45% more bullet per bullet! A cannon reason for why you can get shot multiple times and not die.

kinda has to if they wanted to keep it in the same universe as half life. as in half life you take fall damage so it wouldn’t really make sense if Chell just didn’t for some reason

It's in developer commentary that you can access in first Portal: playtesters kept asking why there's no fall damage and devs added the boots, did not elaborate what they do, or how they work, but testers stopped asking.

Consdiering that Black Holes give of Hawking Radiation and that radiation is a form of heat it makes sense.
I love how all of Aperture's ideas are objectively the worst when it comes to any form of safety regulations and OSHA laws. Their complete disregard for any sort of caution and safety measures is one of my favorite things about the story world. It just cracks me up, and even though they're cartoonishly foolhardy, it never breaks the immersion. It never makes me stop thinking, 'that so wouldn't happen'. No matter what they do, my reaction is 'yep, that's Aperture alright. Probably a pile of dead test subjects off in the distance'

That music 😭 especially near the end around 0:55 it just gives me chills. Like this is the last thing that a lot of us saw before the impending release of one of the best games ever made. So incredibly nostalgic and exciting.
this was the climax of games at the time. Where trailers were fun, gameplay not shit and nobody had any idea what lootboxes or micro transactions were.
tbh The Stanley Parable has the same energy, especially with their trailers. i’d highly recommend

Took me 10 years to rewatch these and actually read the diagrams...
Yup. Apparently the grenades are used to restart the miniature black hole if it doesn't work properly. Basically Aperture Science's version of turning it off and on again.
The diagrams have to be jokes, and I can't believe I didn't notice
Also the instructions on what to do if your fans for the Mini Black Hole stop working are EXTRAORDINARILY DANGEROUS, least the one you mentioned is a quick 'pull pin, throw in, close up'
In the turret diagram showing them stuffed with bullets, the cross-section identifies an empathy generator and an empathy suppressor installed next to each other.
@@PerovNigma because it's cheaper to design them with an empathy suppressor than the take out the empathy circuits.
One of the best in-universe explanations for no fall damage in a game.

The boots absorbed the initial impact from the fall but she continued the movement with the same speed until the knee *which is what stopped her.*
The fact that you have to slow down show that the knee still had the speed of the inital fall.

I loved P and P2 so SO much as a kid, I swear, I contribute me learning to use sarcasm, which then developed to overusage of said tool, to freaking GLaDOS. She was a great antagonist/antihero! Not to mention the nostalgia and genius writing and amazing game tech and how it's a puzzle game and the graphics and animations and... Pretty impressive for games that came out 14 and 10 years ago!

I love the little details on the Portal gun components showcase. Like how if the gun isn't shooting any portals then there's probably something blocking the miniature black hole, and you need to chuck 1 or 2 miniature german stick grenade inside it.
Or how if the cooling fan stops working, you need to get the event horizon estimation wheel out of the gun to use it to find out the safe stopping distance.

I think it's more of a commentary on how he doesn't view the test subjects as people. Instead of congratulating the test subject, he congratulates the boots.

so the boots are the reason you don’t experience fall damage, and the turrets shooting the whole bullet is why Chell can survive being shot so many times. i just love that there are canon reasons for Portal’s video game logic rather than a willing suspension of disbelief. it’s so clever and scratches the right itch for me
Fallout 4 has a Portal reference when you enter the Mass Fusion building. There's a step by step video on how to obtain the high fall leg armor for your character. If you read the logs on the computer, the guy will mention creating anti fall boots for those who don't want to use the stairs. The Mass Fusion building is a skyscraper and they didn't put elevators for the employees so they had to use stairs, and so he came up with the high fall boots.

I'm pretty sure Long-Fall Boots are a recurring item in a lot of games. It's very unlikely it was a reference, unless the design looks similar to these.
Wouldn't surprise me. New Vegas had both a Half-Life AND a Portal reference - on one terminal. Something about Gordon and cake. It was a bit more obvious of a reference than I'm making it out to be, I just can't remember it perfectly.

Gordon Freeman That is a good point. Valve has always done a good job at impressing us. A new engine would be amazing, but still, the source engine now is pretty good. Personally, it is better than the new frostbite 3.
Hopefully more valve games will come out soon. From all the research (extended googling) i have done, it seems that portal 3 is supposed to be around in 2016. Valve has been giving us tiny pieces such as making trademarks, then later deleting or destroying them. i mean WTF! are they just trying to keep us interested, or trying to ANNOY THE FUCKING HELL OUT OF US (excuse my french) in all honesty though it was 4 years between portal and portal 2, and we havent made it that far yet. Still, valve released Portal: Still alive in 2008 and kept us busy a little while longer. We have had no portal 2 DLC or standalone titles (as far as i know of) yet. All i can say is i hope we see a new portal title soon, and THANK GOD for the steam workshop for providing fun little maps.
