This is a great idea. My grandmother placed egg shells in a mason jar, filled the jar with water, and used it to water her houseplants. She grew beautiful plants, including the largest Christmas cactus I have ever seen in person.
Yes I think the houseplant soil or seed starting mixes don't have enough nutrients and are full of fillers. So the extra calcium, acid etc is necessary for them to flourish especially in forced air homes.
@@creatingmygarden My grandma never used potting soil. She threw yard clippings, vegetable & fruit peelings out under the apple tree and used the dirt for all her plants. It makes me wonder if we should go back to the old ways.
That's something I never heard of.Im going to do this too. My houseplants seem to be growing very slowly since I moved to a new state.Maybe this will help them along. Thanks so much for sharing!💞🌹💞
It's dying because there are multiple plants in an itty bitty space. You could have kept the greenery, cut off the buds and old leaves, then gently separated each plant. Usually miniature roses brought from a grocery store are packaged like that. You can get two or more plants from that pot. Right there, it seems you have 4. After separating, you would then gentle remove the soil from the roots and spray a little peroxide on them. This will prevent any disease spreading into there new home. Next you can pot them up in their own containers or keep them in one container, just upgrade the size. Sprinkle a little rose fertilizer or some osmocote and water deeply. Your roses will thrive. My grocery store just put some on sale for $3 and change, I am about to stock up lol. Happy Gardening!
Great tips thanks mine are already planted in my garden and doing well. Love the peroxide tip! It’s fun to get a great deal on mini roses they are super beautiful I have been growing them for years. I always put them out in the garden and cover them for the winter cause of my cold climate their easy to cover when their so small.
@aliciaeguia I did a video on that to show how I protect them check it out. It’s very detailed. I think it is in my first year playlist. It works really well and others have used it to protect their roses.
@@kait5934 I missed some of this comment and I apologize it was one plant for this video a gift from my hubby not 4 in a pot. My roses do very well with my methods there is always room for change as we gardeners learn from each other. So if your way works for you great that is awesome. Keep the tips coming always willing to hear what other gardeners do.
Wow, you seemed really angry at that little rose bush. 😱 One of my sons gave me a miniature one for Mother’s Day last year. After several months, probably in the spring I planted it in the ground, it was doing well for awhile but now I don’t know. I live in the Southern part of America, I fear it may have have gotten too hot 🥵 It has been 100°F for a week, but I water her faithfully. Really baby baby it. I don’t see cutting it almost down to the ground in July will help. I don’t want to lose it because it was a gift from my son.
I would just give it a trim and some food. Your in a warm climate so it probably needs a bit of shade if you haven’t mulched it I would do that to help retain moisture. See if that helps to improve it. Then I would try to plant some shade plants around it for a bit of shelter. They are pretty tough as long as it has leaves on it and now all stems it will probably bounce back. Yes when we prune plants it looks harsh but it really helps to bring them back to life. That little rose is doing great in the garden.
Yes I have had to do this a few times if I get any in winter. It should look pretty in the garden. I just think they are so sweet in the miniature size.
@@creatingmygarden Yes, we’re bracing here too. It’s a double edged sword as we sure need the moisture the snow will bring. Winter isn’t finished yet! ❄️🇨🇦❄️
I'm trying to rescue a mini rose for my mom. I put it in the ground, though. After watching your video, I realize I should cut them down a lot shorter. Thank you.
Depending on the type Of plant I would say yes cause I use this method on perennials and annuals In the garden especially if I buy sale plants and they seem to return to good health.
You are right they are best outdoors you can try repotting and making sure it doesn’t dry out but they are not meant as a house plant. I would also put it on a tray of pebbles and keep the tray moist. I always plant mine in the garden cause they really doesnt do well inside. Worse case if it starts dropping leaves cut it back hard to keep it going.
You’re welcome I do this all the time if I get a rose as a gift or if I pick up some on sale that are in bad shape then I put them in the garden. I do have to protect them for the winter but their so cute and worth it in my zone 3B.
Has anyone in a zone 3 have any luck overwintering theses style of miniature roses in as a bedding plant? I have tried only once. It was a nice looking plant throughout the summer. Flowered and everything. But unfortunately didn’t survive the first winter. I thinking not hardy to my area. Even if not in a suitable growing zone. It was nice to get some more life out of the small little rose. Cheers thanks!
Yes I mulch them heavily for winter and don’t uncover till all danger of frost has past. One year I used wood chips from a tree we took down and landscape fabric I lost one rose that year then last year I used cedar wood chips and landscape fabric. It seems to work pretty good if you stabilize the mulch with landscape fabric then put something on all the edges to anchor it down so the wind doesn’t get underneath. Wind is the enemy. I have a couple videos one showing how I cover and one shows the uncovering. Let me know what you use to protect them maybe I can help.
@@creatingmygarden Unfortunately I did use anything on that pour little thing. I do have two other roses I believe to be more harty. A Campfire and a Hansa rose. This is the 2nd summer for my miniature, and it’s still potted. Some stems are long and others are short, some are green and some are brown, with no leaves. I really need to save this plant. @@richbishop7896 yes the odd numbers make it look nice and full. I can definitely do more when I grow my own plants the budge goes much further. Now that lowes is Rona I was asking the staff where all the houseplants went they hardly have any and they told me they got rid of a pile of supplier cause their losing money so hard to say what they will bring in for plants for spring planting. That explains why they didn’t have any proven winners last summer.
Hi I got my miniature Rose as a gift on valentines and a month in, i started seeing these white spots kind of powder dots on the leaves not too much to the point of thinking its mealy bugs or anything like that but I'm afraid it's powdery meldew and I don't know how to fix it, it can even be dirt powder but how do I know I've tried everything and they don't seem to go away unless it's nothing how do I know?
If it’s powdery mildew you could use a mixture of milk and a bit of water and wipe the leaves and if that gets rid of it. Make sure you’re watering from the bottom as well. Roses in general don’t like wet leaves.
How about drying them (eggshells), in the microwave? I dry everything in the Microwave. But you need to wait About 5-10 minutes for the wet heat to evaporate on whatever you’re drying. I even wash Paper Towels (that are still in good shape) & let them dry. What did we do Pre-Microwave?🤪
No it doesn't if its sick and dying you really don't have a choice. The big thing is keeping it alive till you can plant it outside. They don't make for very good houseplants. Ifyou do keep it as a houseplant it may die back again after blooming then you would to cut it back again. I personally keep them alive till I can plant them in the garden. I do have to protect them in the winter cause I am in zone 3 and they usually are more suited for zones 5 and 6. But I can easily get them through the winter with protection. They are pretty tough once their planted outside.
@@creatingmygarden I am in zone 6. I tried keeping these in the house in the past but they died quickly. They seem to live longer if I put them outside, but now I am going to try planting them out there. I am determined to have success with this plant. LOL
@trusound170 you shouldn’t have an issue outside especially in zone 6 as long as they get enough water and you feed them. Let me know how you make out.
Then you could use a rose, tomato or plant fertilizer. Roses like acid and so do tomatoes so that is why a tomato fertilizer would work but if you don’t have that you could use a multi fertilizer or you could still buy some coffee just for your plants it’s probably just as cheap as buying fertilizer for a small container of coffee grounds.
Hopping them back really helps and then feeding them. Let me know how you make out. As long as they aren’t to far gone you should be able to get them to leaf out again.
