If they do a remake of this game I do hope they keep the ancient ghost fleet to explore which would make crafting a viable economy. They just need to make it where a lot of the items overlap so you have to decide which ammo you want to craft and/or do you want to make a power node to increase your weapon's strength. Health packs could overlap with suit upgrades in the crafting table to make that a tough choice. The biggest thing would be to make sure to limit the amount of crafting materials the player could get to force them to choose.

Found this channel like a week or 2 ago through Dead Space Mobile Review. Been loving all the long form reviews. Quality is crazy for a channel this size. Was a bit blueballed not having a Dead Space 3 Review yet. But FINALLY ITS HERE.

Sorry for the delay! It's half me being a bit side tracked with all the great games that have come out in 2023 and then going on holiday - I'm back to full speed and even though my street fighter play is being hampered I'm focussed on having a video out every 2 weeks...in theory 😅

IMHO I do feel that Isaac's personal journey had wrapped up by the end of the second game, so by the time we got to the third one, it was like "Well, what's left to do with the character? Why, put him in a daytime soap love storyline, of course!" I mean, at this stage, he's been through everything else.
Also, I kind of like the idea of discovering the secret origin of the Markers, and it kind of brings the Marker storyline from the previous games to a full circle.
So, is Dead Space 3 a downgrade from its predecessors? Yes, sadly it is, but that in no way makes it a terrible game; it's not the best entry in the franchise, but it's still very playable.

Thats true, issac at the end of 2 seemed like he'd overcome the markers influence, especially as the end credits scene is him floating in space safe and sound without a jump scare, wish they'd given more thought to character development 😭

My biggest issue with the game was the weapons I could forgive everything else but I hated how the OG weapons felt weak and like you had to engage in the weapon crafting. I loved the stress of inventory management in DS1 / DS2 and the tense feeling of carrying different ammo types and maybe not being able to pickup everything. I hated the universal ammo it made the inventory look boring it was all ammo and health packs going back to DS1 / DS2 or the remake it’s so much more of a tense decision making up your mind on how much of each ammo type to bring with you.

I have a very soft spot in my ❤️ for this game always.. Unfortunately I played it alone , but every so often a random friend would join in on PSN so we could complete the co op missions together.. Chasing after that 100% completion title.. and the kick ass suits that come with it..
I know I'm in the minority , but I love all 3 honestly..
Speaking of which , when are we gonna finally get a HD bundle re- release ? With all 3 titles included? I Wouldn't't mind a Evil Within HD bundle as well..
17:29 No lie I had a fun with that gun mechanic .. The possibilities we're damn near endless.. One time I made a Acid/ Statis Round Line Gun canon.. 😂
And you know at the end of day .. did u have fun playing this game? Is all that matters.. and I had a ball personally speaking playing DS 3... All the way..
29:07 Oh my days what a sequence!! And when you finally put your helmet on.. it's quite as the Dead in Space..
    30:01 Exactly!! 👍
31:38 My Lord Look at that sequence !! Breathtaking gameplay, visuals , and sound design !! We will never get another game like Dead Space.. The bar has been set too high.. Even it's own co creator couldn't recreate this lightning in a bottle.. This magic on screen!
This was a freaking awesome review! 👍

I feel like it’s worth mentioning that many of the issues mentioned were caused by EA.
This is all drawn back to Dead Space 1, which was the most promising game out of the then-current initiative EA had to give new studios a try at new IPs. Though.. if Dead Space were to continue, they mandated that it had to be more “accessible” to the general gaming crowd.
This lead to Dead Space 2 transitioning to action/horror, like Resident Evil 5, while adding in a completely separate multiplayer mode.
With the second game selling 4 times the original, EA saw that as a positive sign people liked the new action direction. So, in their eyes, they made the third game even more of a trend chaser to pursue that non-horror audience once again.
Which is what lead to 3 becoming more and more like the uncharted series, despite the constant pushback documented by Visceral Games.
The overall lack-luster reception of the multiplayer also lead to EA forcing in co-op as a way to appease their share-holders’ need for microtransactions.
Finally, this was during that era where EA also decided that the pc-ports of games NEEDED to match the console versions for reasons unknown or illogical to everyone. So this had the PC ports locked at 30 fps with only mildly better textures and effects than the PS3/Xbox 360 (the only exceptions being higher resolutions and a more stable framerate-though still locked at 30 fps for all 3 games).

    • @SSJdavey
      @SSJdavey  ปีที่แล้ว

EA are ultimately responsible but I can't excuse Visceral for the product that was delivered to us - I didn't realise the PC ports were locked to 30fps thats wild!

I can shit on the game all day. Co-Op, loot boxes, universal ammo, crafting, that forced love triangle. You're barely encouraged to dismember anything cus body shots do significant enough damage. Elton John's lookalike, which they don't even bother having a different model for at the beginning. Seriously, he has his arctic gear on when he's introduced for the first time even though they're nowhere near the frozen planet. But there are parts I enjoy here and there. Jumping between old derelict warships in any order at the beginning is a really cool idea. And first crashing on the planet and having to worry about freezing to death is tense. But you know. There's like 100 things to complain about with every one bit of praise. The game reeks of corporate meddling.

The thing I dislike the most is that Dead Space 3 has some great ideas, but it executes them poorly. Each game explore different kinds of fear, the first is the fear of not knowing, you dont know where the enemy is, you dont know what is in the corner, you dont know how the marker works, etc. The second one, it explores panic, panic of seeing destruction and not being able to do anything, the panic of being chased, the panic of not knowing what to do in the moment.
So the third game, that has a spaceship graveyard, abandoned in the void of space, and a whole planet, devoid of any life(excluding the necros), while Isaac is struggling to survive, it could be the perfect moment to explore the fear of isolation, of being alone, hopeless, struggling to even keep moving, and I think they even thought about it. The part where you have to keep Isaac warm while exploring the depths of Tau Volantis is among the best parts of the game, because it kind of explores this type of situation, but it ends too quickly, and then goes back to all action again, there was great potential, and the game knows it, the team knows it (the original pitch of the game is evidence of that), and I only can be sad that they didn't explore this further

When you briefly mentioned the Dead Space 3 DLC near the end of your review, I became curious to know whether you at least saw its ending on TH-cam. If so, how would you feel if DS4’s premise went something like this below…
    *Spoiler*
If I recall correctly, Isaac and John have used an alien device created by the Necromorphs’ previous victims to actually slay one of the weakened Brethren Moons. The DLC involves the duo trying to send out a warning signal to Earth, that the other Brethren Moons are coming.
While that is going on, some of the leftover Unitologists try to stop them. Isaac and John even have paranoid visions that going back to warn Earth will actually lead the Brethren Moons to it. After defeating a Unitologist leader, however, the duo is told a message directly from the Brethren Moons, that they already discovered Earth’s location and just needed to stall Isaac and John, so Earth is not warned in time.
By the time they make contact with Earth’s channels, there is nothing but radio silence. That is, until they suddenly hear the sounds of Necromorphs. Overall, it seems like the ending to DS3’s DLC is the equivalent to having Cthulhu awaken and bring about the collapse of human civilization.
*Given that the DLC ends on such a note, this is the only way I can currently see the story even continuing. Granted, I did not play any Dead Space games beyond the first one and barely know their stories, so I cannot say whether this would be an appropriate premise for Dead Space 4.*
What if a hypothetical DS4 introduced a plot twist, where the Brethren Moons have left the galaxy so barren of sapient organic life, that they themselves are desperately changing tactics to sustain their population in the long run? What if it turned out that civilizations like the Aztecs committed brutal sacrifices for their gods, because the markers implanted those ideas in people's minds throughout history, to foreshadow the Brethren Moon’s alternate plan for humanity? Instead of assimilating an entire alien race at once, one of the Brethren Moons convinced the others to make humanity into a source of “livestock” this time, so their kind would reproduce slower but more sustainably. Mankind will be allowed to continue existing and colonizing planets, as long as they willingly remain under the Brethren Moons’ watchful eyes and meet their demands for human bodies, dead or alive.
This imaginary DS4 game could show an occupied Earth becoming this hellscape, where places like New York’s Central Park have been converted into giant sacrificial altars. Towering Necromorphs stand watch over cities, like the Great Ones occupying Yharnam in “Bloodborne”, as terrified civilians are forced to accept their presence. The surviving government leaders resort to any means necessary to provide enough "sacrifices". Finally, brainwashed Unitologist priests become a mouthpiece for the Brethren Moons’ other demands, including that if Earth tries to rebel against them, they will declare the “truce” violated. In such an event, they will go back to simply consuming everything at once, like they did to all those previous alien civilizations.
Isaac could be left with a dilemma where, if he continues trying to defeat the Necromorphs, many of Earth’s survivors will turn on him for angering the "gods". So far, the only way I can imagine Isaac sort of winning, which still abides by Dead Space’s Lovecraftian tone, would be if he manages to help most of Earth’s survivors escape from the Brethren Moons’ territory (and maybe slay another Brethren Moon with the Ishimura’s own planet-cracking tools). Mankind may survive and live on freely, but they will never be able to settle for too long on any particular planet ever again. That is, knowing that they can never hope to slay all of the other Brethren Moons, who will always be combing the solar systems to try and reclaim them.

    • @GatorGoob

I believe old visceral games members also revealed design documents for Dead Space 4, which would have revolved around Ellie.
You would have played as Ellie, and engage in a mix of chapter-based and non-linear progression scavenging space in your ship with survivors to find a way to mount a resistance against the brethren moons.
As for how that would have ended, they refused to elaborate (in case EA decides to continue the series) but implied that there was a bigger evil somehow connected to the origin of the necromorphs and brethren moons.
      ---
The original designs for Dead Space 3, as they were made during the development of Dead Space 2, would have had Issac inadvertently turn to the dark side and lead the moons to earth because “his DNA was compatible with the marker signal”. For Dead Space 4, it would have been the final fight at Earth, with “Issac facing his destiny” and the moons.

Was looking forward to this! I don't have much time to write a comment right now, so I'll copy-paste something I wrote about it on another DS3 video a while back.
"I don't think DS3 is nearly as bad as some of the actual bad games out there. It had some great ideas like the Brethren Moons and, frankly, the coop wasn't a bad idea on paper at least. The weapon customization was also really cool on paper. The execution, though, was really lackluster in my eyes. The gameplay was not balanced for single player at all, the story was extremely misguided and half-baked up until the last quarter, and the customization was marred by atrocious weapon balancing and a (largely ignorable but still very scummy) microtransaction system.
Let's compare it to Wolfenstein Youngblood, which had a very similar set of issues. A lot of the things said above fit with that game but, personally, I find that Youngblood does what DS3 wanted to a little bit better because of a vital component: genre and expectations. Yes, Youngblood incorporates some ARPG elements and systems tailored around coop. Yes, there is a greatly lessened focus on the story. Yes, the main characters are sometimes annoying (though they didn't bother me since their banter is reminiscent of two friends playing the game together, but I digress). But Youngblood still built off the strengths of Wolfenstein and kept aspects like the fast paced combat, satisfying weapon upgrades, and excellent shooting intact.
DS3 ultimately suffers from a lack of identity and a failure to live up to any of the things it wants to be. Is it a horror game? Kinda, but there's few real scares in the game beyond startling sounds. Is it an action game? Kinda, but it's not exactly fast paced or fluid enough nor built around its clunkiness to provide for an experience on par with something like Uncharted or Gears. Is it even a Dead Space game? I'd say so, but there's a considerably lessened focus on dismemberment and weakpoint targeting like in past games, so it feels more like a janky clone of RE5, a game that did coop considerably better, rather than Dead Space but with coop.
It's a tragic game because you can see the vestiges of what could have been something great. I hope that a DS3 remake comes out some day to really show people the potential this game had. That original launch trailer will live rent free in my head forever. "Take Down the Terror" is one of the most badass taglines I've ever heard and it would be a shame to see it fade away."

Dead Space 3 might be one of the worst DS games (that weird puzzle one still takes the cake), but not a bad game in general. Actually is pretty damm good. Especially when playing on classic mode (difficulty is on hard, no coop and the only weapons that can be crafted are those from DS1 and 2) which finishing unlocks classic suit of armor.
But what I do not like, which also annoys me in other games like for example Half Life 2, is it ends with a cliffhanger and sequel bait. Ending a game with that, without even being sure that there would any sequel, is a low blow :(

    • @SSJdavey
      @SSJdavey  ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah its not the worst entry in the overall series (far from it) but its such a step down that it really stings - that classic mode sounds like a fun time, might have to give that a go at some point

Once they got rid of the insanity element, the game lost a lot of tension. The love triangle was ridiculous and fighting fast moving human enemies gears of war style just felt wrong. Also, I felt like the graphics took a step back from ds2 🤷‍♂️.

This game definitely has some cringe dialogue and a weird story but I didn't even pay attention to the micro transactions. Didn't play co op either. I find it hard to hate this game because the Hardcore Mode was so exiting. It started me on my path playing no-death style runs. I'd do anything for "impossible mode" in Half Life games, or an actual achievement for beating the game without dying.

@@SSJdavey I'd say so. The hardcore was so exhilarating. Especially towards the end when you're flying through space towards the final boss. I remember being so pumped at the end! I think it's more about the experience of staying alive and you can look past the imperfections.

Nah i think it was great having co op i wasnt impressed in the 1st or 2nd one being a only the lonely horror game it sucked after i completed these 2 the things i went through didnt convince me it was a great journey at all i will go through the 3rd game i am looking forward to co op i own all 4 ds games including the garbage prequel to ds1 ill give ds 3 a run through i wasnt impressed by the 1st or 2nd game so i stopped after 2 but i will try out ds3 eventually just not anytime soon the first 2 games put me off the series which why i haven't bothered playing the final game
