One of my favorite things was how increasingly angry his screams get over the course of the games when he's stomping on necromorphs. That small aspect really resonated with me because I felt like Isaac and I both just wanted it over.

Brendissimo - I have to agree! The BART is ungodly, for sure!!
But try the Central Line on the London Underground between Bank and Bethnal Green, Eastbound. The sound can be truly horrifying...
Jeff Schmidt, Sound Designer for The Exorcist used recordings taken from microphones inserted in the space between carriages on the trains there, to capture what he described as "metal-on-metal, submerged and compressed - tortured if you will..." Some of these audio recordings were used at part of the final soundtrack...
^^ That may be true, but it sounds to me like the noise my wife makes when I wipe my dick on the curtains after our less and less frequent (and more and more perfunctory) lovemaking.

Dead Space 3 wasn't the devs' idea and vision of the game jackass, EA forced their hand to make it an action coop game as horror games were apparently ''too difficult to market in comparison".

@Taaha Ali not really. The desire to keep your livelihood going isn't exactly bad, and desperation is as much part of being an artist as pure inspiration. The idea that every product an artist, or team thereof, produces is pure and free of capitalist requirement is a lie. We all gotta pay our bills. That doesn't inherently reflect negatively on our moral standing.

This video reminded me of Kelly Hurley's [I misremembered] writing on gothic horror. For her it's an instrumental genre, resurfacing in times of crisis, that reflect the horrific crisis in subjectivity that whatever new social force is creating. For the original gothic authors, this was the horror of modern science confirming the body was a material 'thing', unspecial and largely indistinct from the spectrum of the natural world. It's cool to see how dead space combines this scientific register of horror with the specifically late capitalist crisis in subjectivity caused by increasingly dehumanising work culture

One fun fact: Isaac's voice actor in Dead Space 2 isn't a new guy specifically cast for the new, more reckless Isaac, but the same one from the first game given more than just grunts and breathing to record. This is why I'm perfectly fine with it -- sure, it's not as spooky, but I can believe the same guy living out another necromorph outbreak would react the way he does in-game, sounding more exasperated than nervous or traumatized. For some people (myself included) a character who uses his occasional speech to say roughly what the player might be thinking at the time is a lot easier to identify with than a mute protagonist, as it can be more believable than silently accepting whatever happens.

    • @nihilityjoey
      @nihilityjoey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

@@nickd7036 To me playing a game like this is symbiotic in nature when it comes to how you feel about the character and their predicament. You play the game both trying to understand and feel the atmosphere and story from your own point of view "what if this was me, how would I deal with the games plot", and issacs, "trying to understand his way of dealing with the plot". Haveing him as a mute to me traded more of the second for the first (which in the case of just how good the trilogy is anyway, isn't a major or even inconvenient minor deal) You focused more on the side characters than issac at most points to try and get a grip of the actual story telling of the game, it felt autonomous controlling him and how he interacted with the other characters, especially on later playthroughs. 2 and 3 gave you a way to feel about HIM. Giving him a personality gave you a way to then not only experience the game primarily from your own perspective, but from his as well, you could now identify with him. Condemn him, sympathise with him, build a bond (or not) with him, and try and work him and his decisions out. It gave me a slightly better way overall to view the story. There are trade offs either way, but like I said, i found it easier to bed in to the story of the games and identify more with who i was controlling and "sharing" the game with in 2 and 3, which in turn enriched the over all depth of those games a bit more from the first. I do truly see them as a natural progression of each other in terms of how they continued the games core mechanics and feel whilst keeping the changes subtle. Great achievement.

Dead space to it's creators represented the end of that stage of their careers, rather than the artistic triumph it was known to be by it's fans.

Food for thought, what if Ridley Scott (Alien '79) cut the movie like this:
    [Alien '79]
3rd act: Lambert and Parker were just killed, Ripley rushes to the self destruct and sets it. While slinking through the corridors of the Nistromo to reach the shuttle, the xeno pops up out of the ladder port. Ripley stops, the xeno's face inches around the corner into view...
Cut to exterior view of the Nostromo
Cut to distant view of the Nostromo
Cut to view of Nostromo being a tiny speck in the starfield
A bright flash erupts as the Nostrmo dissintegrates into nothing more than light breifly illuminating the darkness of space.
    Credits
    [Alien '80 DLC]
The rest of the 3rd act and 4th act where Riply survives and signs off.
    Credits
My point being that this is how I personally feel about how DLC should NOT be implemented; a near 180 degree universe change for an additional purchase. It just feels disjointing.
And yeah, Alien is my favorite movie, the next being John Carpenters: The Thing

I'm more in the camp that Dead Space 3's original ending makes more sense in the context of Dead Space 2, what Isaac said about "not being afraid anymore", it makes sense. He's familiar with fighting the necromorphs, and has seen so much of the ugly side of humanity (due to the indoctrinated unitologists) that he lost so much hope in humanity and himself. He already forgave himself for Nicole's death, but he seems more motivated now that he had (and taken) a chance to save Ellie and end the Moon once and for all. I found it inspirational when I played through it all those years ago. After I saw Awakening, I thought the 180 from Bittersweet to Nihilistic in tone was out of place given how they decided to end the 2nd game and kept escalating the theme that Ellie gives Isaac hope all throughout 3's campaign. Maybe I read too much into it and have nostalgia for a game a lot of people dislike, but I still hold my opinion.

I just restarted playing the series again...
Dead Space was awesome. I remember the first playthrough of the first game. How relieved I was when I saw save stations. It was unnerving, the atmosphere was awesome. And the twist was good. Not entirely unexpected, but good. The only thing I would have as a slight criticism would be parts of the fight system. Sometimes it just felt unresponsive, like not being able to reload if you are not aiming. Maybe that was by design, but it felt clunky at times.
Still, it was certainly the best game. It did so much setting up this universe, backstories and so on.
Dead Space 2 for me is rather close though. The horror wasn`t as good, also because it already was slightly more action focused - and seeing the same enemies way more often kind of dulls the horror of them at some point. They introduced some new enemy types, but some we already knew from the first game. But: I felt the gameplay was the best in the series. Combat felt a bit more fluid, less clunky compared to 1. But every weapon had its own ammo, making inventory management still a thing. It also enhanced on the story and universe. As a player, you learned more about the markers, how they worked, what they to do peoples brains and so on. And the whole term "make us whole" got more information. Where it was more of a creepy sentence we didn`t know exactly what it meant, now it started to come together.
And then ther was 3... not to say I hate it, but it was certainly a mixed bag. I think it had some good ideas. If you go for coop I think it was a good idea to have the characters face different hallucinations the other player can`t see. Especially if you played with voice it was interesting if your coop partner freaked out a bit, where you didn`t know why. It also expanded even more on the universe, the necromorphs. Part of the combat system I also liked, the idea that you can build weapon combinations was interesting. That you only have 1 ammo type though was a big step backwards for me. Because it really made inventory management way easier. Which is to me a bad thing for survival horror.
Still, I am really sad that they basically killed it. What a waste, I think if they handled DS3 better, the whole DS universe would have more to give. At least 1 game more, so to speak.

The problem I have with Dead Space 1 is that it's not nearly as good at being as atmospheric and scary as it's trying to be. Every scare in the game is the most loud, obvious, and unsubtle assault on your senses as possible, yet it tries to come off as a slow burn sophisticated horror title. The mechanics and weapons are also just too slick and satisfying to cultivate a creepy horror atmosphere, ironically the game being so fun to play takes away from the atmosphere it wants.
Dead Space 2 gets criticized for being "just an action game" but I think it's just a more honest expression of the what the first game was going for. It's also loud, unsubtle and filled with goofy splattergore but the tone is a lot more B horror instead of A horror and it meshes together a lot better. Plus the weapons, the variety of locales and visuals are just a lot stronger and more engaging. It's much the superior title in my opinion. Normally Dead Space 1 would be more of my jam, but I just don't think it's very good at what it was trying to be.
