I was gonna say... what people say RE 5 did to escalate over 4, Dead Space 3 leaned 10 times harder into that. Unlike Jared, I did feel like DS3 was a slog. On the issue of weapons - ironically, I found that a fast-firing weapon was the ideal solution, but the best automatic weapon does NOT come from the Military Engine. It is, in fact, the Telemetry Spike + Diffraction Torus. It creates a rivet machinegun with a pretty low damage per shot, but a RIDICULOUS fire rate, very high ammo capacity, and good stopping power. Slap stasis coating or acid bath on it, sling on an underbarrel force gun for crowd control, and you have yourself the all-rounder ultimate destruction weapon that will let you deal with anything at any range.
Another quirk of the game, as you pointed out, lies in the universal ammo system. Through experimentation, I and many other people have deduced that it ALWAYS, ALWAYS takes 4 universal ammo to reload an empty magazine. Rocket launcher with 2 rockets per magazine? This means each rocket costs 2 ammo. Rivet chaingun with 400 rounds? One ammo equates 100 rounds. What this means is, the magazine size upgrades are the second best ammo saving mechanic in the game (direct damage upgades being the first one). The rivet chaingun (telemetry spike + diffraction torus) starts with 100-150 rounds base, I forget. But slap enough ammo upgrade chips on it, and you can stretch 1 universal ammo to kill several of the tougher necromorphs. The simple truth of more ammo capacity -> more ammo efficiency absolutely ruins any kind of ammo preservation balance the game might have had. And it's all due to the way universal ammo works.

I found out after that there's apparently a lot more substance to many narrative moments if you play co-op because of the cutscene interactions between Carver and Isaac. That's why Carver's character development feels so sudden in the single player only run. The devs built the game around you having seen those co-op cutscenes that further developed him.
Really, if they were dead set on co-op, they should have given the option to play through with an A.I. playing Carver.

Going through Dead Space 1 to 2 to 3 in quick succession, it's quite dazzling how much these games improve visually. They're not Uncharted 1 to 2 level of visual jump, but the consistency is there. DS2 has a lot more environmental variety and higher geometry complexity throughout, vastly more unique art assets everywhere (hell, they render an entire space station for a halo jump - same assets notwithstanding). Dead Space 3 has ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, tons of cube map reflections, vastly more light sources, bokeh like depth of field, higher polycount for enemies and characters, higher rez shadows all around.
In Dead Space 1, the visor light was just a point light, which means it never actually emanated light unto your surroundings.
In Dead Space 2, the visor light was technically still a point light, BUT the devs manually inserted light coming from the visor in a few sections where lights cut out OR mostly when you transition from one zone to another using a vent/shaft.
In Dead Space 3, the visor light is no longer a point light. It's a proper light source. It always emanates light in the shape of the visor display. Well, for the spaceship parts at least. Not sure the visor light still works while on Tau Volantis.

After my first playthrough, I thought this was the end of the series and played on the horror trope of being stuck there. Not to mention the added tragedy of missing being saved by Ellie by apparent minutes. I even remember thinking "you jumped out of there fast, Ellie! Not gonna wait around for an hour or two to see if any signals come back??" To be fair, it matched how fast Isaac slams the door in her face when she's getting gassed though 😂

This has to be my favorite retrospective episode you’ve ever done. There were some arguments made throughout your Resident Evil Retrospective I didn’t agree with but completely understood your point, (see: the discussion on what defines survival horror as a genre), same with the silent hill series. But this video on the third Dead Space articulated the extreme highs and lows of this game I couldn’t put into words when I first played it at 13 years old. There’s a strange sense of catharsis that comes from finally seeing someone able to adequately put these feelings to words. Great job as always!

The way that, while playing in coop, whoever gets Carver will hallucinate and that is never part of the marketing campaign. so when you're playing with a buddy, that is genuinely scary and creepy. An elevator ride will be just that for Isaac, but my friend would be saying..." hey, wtf, what is going on here? what are those pictures?" and I'll be like "What pictures?" - "Here, man, on this wall!" - "I don't see anything...

I really don’t like the writing in this game. All of the characters act like they’re in a parody and make so many poor decisions, plus the dialogue felt much more natural in 1 and 2. The sense of urgency and oppression was constant and kept things moving in the other games. 3 rolls around and a lot of that chaotic energy is just... gone? The lore was nice, but Isaac’s journey felt incredibly played out, Ellie loses all of her charm and Carver ends up dooming the universe like what the fuck? Definitely not a bad game by any means but nothing special. I’m just in awe at how uninspired it felt.
I did like how the ending shows Ellie alone on the escaping ship though, keeping tradition since the first game.

Of course some small dev made amazing horror game with the amount of effort put in to it with some much idea. Instead of making it for the money.

I found my enjoyment was start stop and that the difficulty was extreme in places. I completed 1 on impossible and 2 on Zealot on my first run. I had what felt like wave after wave of necromorphs coming for me and ever dwindling resources. After a lot of swearing, near crying and headaches I completed it to find I had accidentally played on hard mode. I am a silly man.

What I did for weapons in 3 was just combine my usual arsenal of 4 weapons from DS2 into 2 weapons in DS3.
So, in DS2 I fancied a loadout comprised of the plasma cutter, pulse rifle, force gun, and seeker rifle. In DS3 once I had enough blueprints and materials, I crafted a hybrid SMG+plasma cutter for medium range battles, while my other gun was a Seeker rifle with an underbarrel force gun for long range engagements and crowd control.
I like DS3 but for noticeably different reasons that I liked 1 and 2.

I don't know, feels a little disingenuous saying Dead Space failed because of corporate meddling when the devs had full control of everything with Dead Space 2 and even had an insane marketing campaign like you discussed to back them up. The game flopping isn't anyone's fault. Personally I think the series died because survival horror fanbases have a tendency to eat themselves. A common complaint going around was "it's not scary" as if to say that's a be all end all point of criticism which honestly kills a lot of horror games regardless of their quality. RE has only survived because they changed the formula almost immediately back then and the games are all different from one another.

Hence why people like Hammond and others have a tough time fighting Necromorphs.

My experience of this series was literally only this game. I'd never had the correct system before. A friend of mine grabbed DS3 for us to play, as he was a big fan of the first two. He ended up not telling me anything about the world going in so I will say that I was very confused the whole time although I was very intrigued. I also played a player 2, and neither of us had any idea that the player 2 character was essentially hallucinating the entire time and I was commenting on things on screen that he was not seeing, and his character was occasionally talking with other teammates that I was not privy to their conversation. It was a really fun mechanic since we weren't expecting it. I think if you went into this game looking for a spooky co-op it was a good time, but I can see how long time fans could be disappointed with the direction it took.

Your a lucky man as you went through the survival horror depression with a series with just RE. People like me who were there for the start of dead space had to go through it again with dead space. We had hope after RE burned us so bad only for it to crap the bed pretty fast and it legit killed the series for a while which now they are rebooting. Lets hope they learned their lesson.

A bit late on this video but picture this real quick.
You are a kid around 13 growing up in a extremely religious household with very little experience with gaming other than a few other Xbox titles no cod's nothing violent in anyway. Then your uncle sneaks you a game. Deadspace 1. It blows you away it is nothing like you've ever seen it makes you feel things you didn't even imagine and you have the most fun and tense moments in your life. Then you beat it once, twice, three times, and then on hard-core with only a plasma cutter back to back. Then your uncle tells you there is a second game. You see the opening and you are blown away. It is more of everything you have loved for the past year. Again you put everything you have into fully immersing yourself in the world and the lore and every tiny detail. Then your parents find out and ban everything that made your life so amazing. Eventually after more hiding and sneaking around you get your hands on the third game. Away from all the publicity, away from all the understanding of "bad game mechanics", away from reviews. It was amazing and introduced so many new mechanics and themes, not to mention capping of the story and adding more world building and everything.
That is my experience with the series and why the third game in particular means so much to me. Now obviously there are very valid criticisms with the game, but even now it is a little frustrating to me that people can't give the game a chance outside of all the controversy.
Thanks for having an honest and open review of my favorite series man I really appreciate it. Obviously this is like the most bias view possible but to everyone I really hope you guys either give the series a try or try it again. Thanks for your time.

I don't think they thought very few people would play solo, I think at some point they probably decided to just go all-in on the co-op so they could do the things where the game screws with the players by giving them slightly different experiences (like Carver hallucinating when Isaac isn't, or NPCs sending messages to Isaac or Carver but not the other,) and just accepted that the solo experience was going to suffer for it. It probably felt like one of the few chances they had to do something artistic with EA breathing down their necks.
53:00 many of the Necromorphs on Tau came into being because the SCAF personnel who managed to survive the purge were eating infected flesh to not starve to death, and it mutated them differently. Of course, many of the Necromorphs on Tau were also made the old-fashioned way, but eh, nothing's perfect. Maybe the cold had something to with it; it did a pretty good job freezing the place over. Seeing the Tau turned into Necromorphs was certainly a sight.
I was definitely on a different wavelength with this game's setup, I think. The whole "Unitology is making it's move and has toppled the government" thing felt really *off* to me. I think it was a problem of execution; this game tried (whether intentionally or as a result of EA's meddling) to replicate the change between *Alien* and *Aliens* (for the youngins, the change is that they're exactly the same movie, except different sub-genres of horror; *Alien* is a stalker/slasher movie, while *Aliens* is action/panic-oriented horror,) and I don't think it succeeded as well as *Aliens* did. It's just not *quite* there.
As a final note, Danik was voiced by Simon Templeman, aka Loghain, but more importantly Kain from the *Legacy of Kain* series, which would provide a tenuous connection for you to do an LoK retrospective! (Or Mass Effect, he's in that too.)

I really think Dead Space 3 is criminally underrated and deserves more appreciation.
It might have somewhat weaker writing and less horror than its predecessors, but the action is still damn fun, and the co-op was a neat addition that expanded the experience.
Hopefully with the success that Dead Space Remake had made, EA Motive will go on to reintroduce 2, 3, and Extraction to modern gaming.

The best gun ever created in Dead Space 3 was a force gun grenade launcher “The Force Feeder” (I developed it as a way to deal with the feeders) You literally just spam the force gun, Pile all the enemies into a corner and blow them up with a grenade.
