The age of consent in New York is 17.
In the final episodes we will discuss more about Soon-Yi's claims that Mia was "abusive" and we will also hear what Moses Farrow has to say in addition to Dylan and others. This story is like "peeling back an onion". I hope you find this series insightful, informative and thought-provoking.

She wrote an album in the 1970s about a girl being molested in an attic while playing with a toy train. Other TH-camrs have uploaded the clip with lyrics. Or watching Gayle King not ask a single challenging question. The evidence shows that the girl was coached and the abuse never took place. Mia is a bitter ex. She's changed her story several times. I don’t think we should base all our assessments of Mia on that confrontation with Soon-Yi just after she found the photos. She was in shock. Yes, she handled it in just about the worst possible way - I completely agree. But people do weird shit in shock.
For example; years ago my mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of a Brussel sprout (she’s perfectly fine now). When my parents told me, I spent the next 20 mins cracking jokes and laughing my arse off like I was filming my own comedy special. I was in shock and acting in just about the most inappropriate, cruel, tactless way a daughter could. But I couldn’t see that at the time. The next day I was mortified at my behaviour and could barely look at mum, because I was so embarrassed and ashamed.
Did I do and say those things in response to that news? Yes, I did. Is that 20 mins or so an accurate representation of me as a daughter, or how much I love my mother, or how terrified I was of this diagnosis? God no!
But if that’s all people knew about me, you could fairly assume I was a psychopath, or hated my mum, or god knows what else.
Do I think Mia is perfect? No, I think she’s a little batty at the best of times - and this was the worst of times. Mia has to live with the fact that she let her daughter down when she needed her most - that’s a heavy penance for a mother.
You also have to remember that this was the early 1990s. Our understanding of grooming and power imbalances has come a long way. The rest of the decade would be spent blaming Monica Lewinsky, 21 year old unpaid intern, for a relationship with most powerful man in the world. I am so pleased that we look back on relationships like Woody and Soon-Yii and see it as that of a groomer and a victim.
Let’s remember who the real enemy here is.

She groomed her, plain and simple. Knowing that she didn’t have a real father in her life, and that she grew up in an abusive and malignant home, he preyed on that. Frankie Mihn - who's Chinese, has never spoken publicly to confirm or deny.

Lark - who was Korean, died from AIDS in extreme poverty. Mia refused to visit her or call her when she was on her deathbed.
Tam - who was Vietnamese, died on the bathroom floor surrounded by pill bottles. Moses claims it was intentional suic1de, Mia swears that Tam was just confused and accidentally took the wrong pills.

I try and remember my feminist roots, namely that many many women go back to an abuser and it takes time for them to leave for good... but it's not like Woody was physically abusive. It appears to be psychologically and emotionally. So many games played. So very thought provoking. I'd love to hear Ronan's side of the story. Woody found his ideal victim in Soon-yi. He had all of the power.
I think he left those pictures out, knowing Soon-yi would then be the only one there to bare the brunt of her mother's anger. No doubt he groomed her, but he waited until she was older to place those photos. I think he hoped that in doing that, that Soon-yi would not be viewed as a victim. Even though she ABSOLUTELY is a victim.
He preyed on his wife's daughter. He knew that it would break the family apart. He got inside soon-yi's head. 'Gave her confidence' (made her dependant on him, as she was so young and vulnerable). Made sure to isolate her from her own mother. Now he feels like he's won the ultimate battle.
Men like him, want children whom they can train into their perfect little Slave. It's sick. This man is calculated. I think he genuinely thinks that people will view Soon-Yi as somehow being the villain, for 'stealing her mother's man'. Which is not at all what any sane person is thinking.
Soon-yi will believe that she had the power because facing the reality would tear her world apart. He's all she's known for so long.

Allowing a child to dress like that, knowing what she knew. Soon-Yi had been moved from her home country, she only had Mia and Woody and both failed her. It is a sad story.

After a while when your child is 18 you have no say over what they wear and her reaction was completely normal to me, how is she supposed to be civilized when she is in shock? Which by the way I dont understand how she was shocked, it was so clear they were sleeping together from everything the alone time in her room, going to games together, NYC together every weekend, she had a crush on him, dressing provocatively...maybe Mia just couldnt believe it.

We obviously don’t know what happens behind closed doors, but hearing about Mia’s reaction to the photos and coming at Soon Yi aggressively tells me she knew something was up. Probably not at all this extreme but she must have had suspicions. Maybe she had previously tried bring it up beforehand, but the photos were just the tipping point of so much anger Mia had against Woody.
Also - it is still so wild to me that after all the women Woody had been with beforehand, he’s STILL married to Soon Yi, and they have 2 adopted children. Assuming he’s never cheated, it is wild that this is the partner he stuck by. The most horrifying relationship he could be in, and the fact that she has stayed by his side even after mountains of accusations against him. More than just love keeps them together, and I don’t even know what that can be.

Soon Yi is harder to read. But all I can really say for certain with Soon Yi is she’s got some MAJOR daddy issues. The only people at this point I’m worried for are their adopted children. Soon Yi is a fool if she thinks history won’t repeat itself. And the adopted kids a both cute little Asian girls just like she once was. They’re woodys type. She must have a lot of trust in him to adopt those children… that is some other disturbing shit is going on which is why they wanted the kids. Either way I agree that love is not what keeps them together…

I was about 10 or 11 and in NY when the story broke. Everyone went WILD! I was a kid, so I didn’t understand the details, but I remember my uncle being so upset once when the news was talking about it. I asked him what happened, and he said that “the man” had cheated on his wife. I think he tried to keep it as simple and clean for me since I was a child. He then went on to say some choice words about WA. I still didn’t really get it, but I remember replying, “That’s disgusting.” Now looking back at the whole story, I don’t know how this man avoided jail time. Oh wait, he’s famous with money. He really is a classic predator. He has used his movies to groom the world into thinking he is just a harmless bumbling idiot when really he is a master manipulator. The way he is reframing everything is truly wicked. His excuses actually implicate him even more, saying Soon-Yi just needed someone to notice her and "love" her but frame it as the only way to do that is to have sex with her is quite simply ludicrous and offensive. He could have been there for her as a father, or at least as a father figure, shown interest in her as a human being and not a sexual exploit. The fact is he was physically present and financially their father figure but he had ZERO interest in any of them until there was something he could get out of it. Same with Dylan. This is where Mia's behavior comes in, Mia is also manipulative and contradicting herself A LOT. Her naivety and paranoia is a very odd and concerning mix. Woody's general behavior was suspect at best and really warranted serious action and she really did not protect her children. I think in Mia Woody saw an easily manipulatable victim, and be started on her way before he saw anything he wanted from the children.

What Mia says at 47:56 is appalling and reveals that she STILL views Soon-Yi to be at fault. Saying that *Soon-Yi* “betrayed her family” and is “morally bankrupt”? Mia needs to take accountability for this whole situation because a lot of this was her own damn fault too. The 1 person who ISN’T at fault in this is SOON-YI!!!! Yet, both Mia *and* Woody view her as responsible, complicit, and equally to blame. They should be ashamed of themselves. They don’t deserve to be parents of ANY child. I’m infuriated the more I listen to this video.

Mia is far from being a good mother. The kid was groomed under her nose and instead of giving her space and showing she was always welcomed in her motherly arms, she shouted "what have you done". If I was Mia I'd be asking myself was had I done and hug my daughter tightly, inquiring about severity of the abuse. If the daughter was groomed to love him, shouting and alienating her, only pushed her further away, making her forever dependent on the abuser. "So take her and go away" - bravo Mia. "What did you do to her and mine's relationship" - excellent mother. It should be more "what have you done to her? I'll always love her and she and I are the victims of you but she didn't do anything against me because she was groomed". The way she talks about her explains everything. I'm so sorry for Soon-Yi. As a kid she was let down by everybody, and her mother was suffering only because she lost her man, not because her daughter was violated. Good priorities. I wouldn't cry a day over this weirdo but wait in pain for my daughter to come back when she was ready and help her the moment she asked. She really mourn over her relationship with a man who abused her kids, not the child herself. 47:55 says it all.
