    I'd take the YJ over the Rubicon any day. It's hard to treat a Jeep like a toy when it costs 30-40 grand

      Jonathan Roberson get a TJ, still has the old feel but with more modern features (coil overs, lockers if you get the rubicon, airbags) and it’ll be a lot cheaper. Plus the engine will outlast the body.

      fishhuntadventure the YJs, MBs, and CJs had leaf springs. 97 and up (TJ, LJ, JK, and current JL) all have coil springs.

      CamaroAmx I prefer leaf springs, no sway bars or track bars to fight suspension movement, no 8 control arm bushings to get loose & sloppy, the big problem with leaf spring Jeeps is the front shackles are at the wrong end but an SRS takes care of that. And unless you’re as sensitive as the Princess in the Princess and the Pea, coils are no better on the road. Neither is IFS.

    If you put how much extra a new Rubicon cost into that 90s YJ you would have something incredible that the rubicon could never touch off road. I do like the new jeeps but it seems like they have lost their souls as dedicated off road vehicles. I would rather fix up and modify an old jeep than have a new one. Wranglers are supposed to be rough around the edges, simplistic and durable. Keep all the unneeded luxury junk in the Grand Cherokee for soccer moms.

      You could always buy a bone standard JK sport and build in anything you wanted. That's what I did. Make it as simple or complicated as you wanted.

      chefdan87 Stupid argument. its like saying because I can buy a 1990's Civic for 2 grand and put 30 grand into it to beat a modern Vette the Civic is better. Simple fact is the JK is a better off-roader. Stock for stock its got better approach, departure and the 4 door gives up about 1 degree on breakover (2 door has better breakover), better clearance, longer control arms so more flex, requires less lift to fit a bigger tire, lockers, beefier axles, it will go through stuff with ease the YJ will struggle on... The JK is a better platform starting and mod for mod. And before you rip on me, I have a built TJ with nothing left stock, last g/f had a built YJ. Current g/f has a JK lifted 3 inches on 35's. The JK would wipe the floor with the others stock for stock, and even lightly modded its running with mine on all but the hardest of trails.

      Josh E no, what they are saying is that if you had the money, say 40 grand to get an awesome jeep, you could either buy a new top of the line JK or a 20 year old jeep, then, assuming you spent at the most 6 grand on the yj, you still have 34 grand to dump into the old jeep. which is why you will see older models beefed up more often than JKs.

      chefdan87 you're totally right, the adrenaline when you can't pass through the mud for example, and now you don't suffer/enjoy because the new rubicon do all the work, in old jeep you need skill to made it, i'd never change my CJ-7.

    I drive a 91 yj and absolutely love it. Working on it is so much easier than newer cars because of the simplicity of the engine. I’ve spent a lot of time doing stuff to it cosmetically and internally. And such a fun piece of machinery that has taught me a lot about auto mechanics. Wouldn’t trade it for a jk or even a jl

      Buy the 95, do axle swaps, lockers, tires, etc. and you'd still have at least $18k left over. And all of that will out wheel the Rubi.

      I have an awesome white 1995 Rio Grande Edition Jeep YJ with tube bumpers all around. These will be collector items just like the CJ Levi Edition and Golden Eagles. 😉

      +Adam Payne Apple's to oranges comparison. The YJ Sahara would have been expensive back in the day when it came out. The idea is to show where Jeep tech has gone from then until now, not to just say, "yup, expensive new Jeep wins the shit out of a cheap beater."

      +Anthony Bouchard It sure was a goofy way of showing it. If the idea was to show a progression of technology then they shouldn't have presented this as a head-to-head contest about which is "better," offroad. Yes, the YJ did woefully under perform against a new Rubicon but as you said this was an apples to oranges demonstration. Throw another five thousand bucks at the YJ to give it a spring lift, lockers, gears, a better rear axle and bigger tires (all of which the Rubicon has from the factory) and I doubt you'd see the Rubi just walk the the old, crappy, unloved, square-headlight Wrangler from the 90s. None of those modifications are new technology. 4 doors, coil spring suspension and a not great V6 from Chrysler are the only new tech on the Rubicon.

      That was clearly just the guy in the video being cocky as a part of his production sense of humor. I think you're taking that too seriously. Modifying the YJ with aftermarket parts would be Apples to Oranges against a modern from-the-factory configuration of the JK. And it already was kind of modified.
      Actually what I think this video symbolizes is that you get a whole lot more bang for your buck these days in a new vehicle than you did in the 80's. It just demonstrates that off road machines have come a long way in capability and engineering.
      To me, it sounds like you just want the YJ configured exactly like the JK so that they'll perform the same. But that takes the fun out of the video because then you don't get to see the differences in modern vs. old tech.
      Technically, the guy could have converted the YJ to JK Rubicon axles with coils and put the HD D44s in it, and the 3.6L in it too. Then it would have been a JK in a YJ frame with a YJ body, but what fun would that be? That just shows that there's aftermarket support and doesn't really show how capable the Jeep was off the factory line.

    How can you really compare a YJ that costs 1/10 of that JKU? Put 10k into that YJ and it could about crawl over the Rubi and your still $35,000 cheaper.

      Clay Martin that was the point, although, I wasn't using retirement and investment maximizing strategies, just market indexes as my rebuttal example. Showing even without a need to understand investing strategy or anything other than pop funds into a major index, simply using the DJIA or S&P you'd have just over a 6 fold increase in that period from either, which gives you over $110,000 (~$114K) or, as I said, enough for two JKURs and still have money left over for a Seadoo or ATV.
      Of course if you just invested all that MSRP into Apple in 1990, you'd have about $2.2 million in current share value, let alone the dividend which in the last few years would've netted essentially a free Sahara to JKUR per year in dividend income alone.
      Now get to work on that time Machine Boyz !! =B~)

      I had a 92 YJ, but I love my 06 LJ Rubicon. 2 door, 4.0 and manual. Be happy to ride with that 2015 with my old tech.

    Wow, the lockers take all the fun out of it :) I had a 1982 CJ-5 Laredo for 13 years. Had it all over the Colorado Rockies. Never came close to tipping it.

      the new on s aren't as durable or well made. my friend has a rock crusher and the engine blew the first week, and the rear axle broke off roading in a field... I have never had that issue with my 94 Sahara.

    I had a '94, bought it new and drove it for around 10 years. I'd love to have another one-not a new Jeep but a older one just for a weekend toy. It is so hard to find older Jeeps in fairly good condition-they are either all rusted out or beat to Hell and back. Or if they are in good condition the owner wants a fortune for it.
    Oh and for the record, i never got stuck and i never came close to flipping it.

      I bought wrangler in 1995. The only issue is people steal parts off it. Lost a battery and 2 door windows Mechanical issues are no issue. The heater was not working. But it was still on warranty so the dealer had to fix it. The things I have done is buy new batteries and one set of tires and new canvas. change the oil flush the radiator and get the transfer cases serviced. After 25 years I am satisfied It might go another 25 years

    this is totally immature! The new jeep is made of crappy materials that wont even be there in 25 years and the old jeep has street tires and no lockers?!! how is this test even worth watching?Put tires and lockers in the old jeep and that tin can suv of a new jeep will get tore up.:)

    Great video, looked like lots of fun. I like JKs, they are really nice Jeeps. But I have to admit, I am partial to the CJ & YJ era. Fact is, put a set of lockers in the YJ and real set of tires. The YJ would go any place the Rubi would go .. and more, for less than half the cost. Great video guys and thanks for sharing. Have a great day!!

    I know that times have changed but I don't believe that the Penastar V6 will as reliable as that 4.0L inline 6. I mean I have 94 XJ with over 400,000 miles.

      He said at high altitude they really starve for air, and fuel injection helps, which is generally accurate.
      At high altitude the air is less dense. Go to higher altitude and suddenly your carbureted engine isn't getting enough air, the fuel mixture is wrong, and it is running terrible. Fuel injection systems are much better at adapting the fuel mixture to keep is correct, so while you may be down a bit on power at high altitude, the fuel/air mixture ratio is still correct, so it still runs well.

      Atanas Tripzter Fuel injection doesn't force more air in. But you took what he said slightly out of context. He said at higher altitudes, his carbureted engine starved for air, it was very evident in his carbureted bike. At higher altitude the air is less dense, and there is much less oxygen. A carbureted engine is drawing in the same volume of "air", but the air is less dense, there is less oxygen, so the engine runs rich (because the air/fuel ratio is off), the fuel doesn't combust fully, and it generally runs poor.
      A fuel injection system detects this condition and adjusts the amount of fuel delivery to match the amount of oxygen. You will have reduced maximum power (less oxygen, and less fuel to go along with it), but the engine continues to run smooth and stable, vs. a carbureted engine "starving for air", or said another way, running too rich. The fuel injection system isn't adding air, it's matching the fuel to the amount of air/oxygen.
      Hope that clears it up. Sorry I wasn't clear what I meant in my previous post.

      Atanas Tripzter Of course. A fuel injection system uses either a mass air flow sensor (or a map sensor, coupled with throttle position sensor, barometric pressure sensor, etc.) to very closely guess the actual mass of air entering the engine. It then adds fuel to the system in an attempt to reach an effective air/fuel ratio. The particular air fuel ratio targeted will depend on engine temp, ambient air temp (etc., etc.). At higher altitudes, even if the volume of the air entering the engine is the same (and it will be very close to the same since engine displacement doesn't change), the MASS of the air does change (since it is less dense), and less air mass requires less fuel to reach a given fuel mix. A fuel injected system reacts to these changes to keep the ratio correct. It also monitors O2 sensors to make changes as needed. So a fuel injected system will generally run much better at varying altitudes vs. a carbureted engine.
      A carburetor's fuel delivery is much more tied to throttle position compared to a fuel injected system. A carburetor has multiple jets at various points (high-speed, low-speed and often mid-range jets, along with an acceleration jet). Engine vacuum draws fuel from the jets, and air flowing through the throttle body creates a venturi effect, which also draws fuel from the jets. Which jet fuel is drawn from depends very heavily on throttle plate position. If a carburetor is tuned for low altitudes (jet or port size, float bowl level, etc.) it will end up supplying too much fuel at higher altitudes because the volume of air entering the engine is largely unchanged, so the fuel deliver is also largely unchanged. But since that air is much less dense and contains much less oxygen, a carbureted engine will said to be "starving for air" at higher altitudes if it isn't tuned for them. Really, it's just running rich because the air is less dense, and the ratio is off. A fuel injected engine adjusts to these changes, so it runs much better at varying altitudes. In the video he was simply saying that while the YJ was older technology than the newest Wrangler, it was still fuel injected, so it wasn't struggling at high altitudes like his carbureted bike had, since it was "starving for air".

    My 5 speed manual 95 yj with a 4 inch lift and 33 inch tires, and modified 4 low gearing ratios would destroy that yj. Although I would loose to the the new Jeep, I am certain I would have more fun driving my true off-road automobile than that poor over built soccer mom SUV. Jeep has been dead in its original essence for a while now.

    The 4 door wranglers look so stupid. Those should not be called a wrangler. Also, those "big" tires on the older jeep are shit compared to the tires on the new one. If you want to make it more even, at least get the same type of tire on both. That is the only way.

    Throw some decent tires on the old YJ and it will make a world of difference. You could see how terribly they self-cleaned and like they said, not good off-road tires.
    New technology makes what used to require thought and skill nearly mindless. That's why we are heading towards autonomous cars. Mankind has spent centuries finding ways to not do work. There are those enthusiasts that still want to shift gears, modulate the throttle, and otherwise truly drive.
    Some might argue modern Jeeps have lost their purity and such a judgement is tricky. To a great extent, their capability comes from superior equipment, like locking diffs and quick-disconnect sway bars. These increase traction and suspension performance. Other technologies like hill descent control and terrain management (like in JGC), augment the driver.
    The old Jeeps can be made quite capable with the right equipment and a good driver such that a new one wouldn't leave it behind.

    I would like to emphasize something mentioned in the review. When Jeep switched from leaf springs to coil springs, they vastly improved the ride. Traveling down a bumpy road on leaf springs may jar some teeth loose. Some will argue that the leaf springs are stronger for jumping things.

    What Nathan said about his father not letting him buy a Jeep hit home with me. I was looking at Jeeps in the early 90's but my father (an auto mechanic) would not let me buy one for the roll over problem. He knew guys killed in CJ roll overs. Many years later I was grown, left home, married and my father was long passed away and shopping for a mini van when I stopped myself and said hey, look at Jeeps again! That is when I bought my new TJ. Unless it gets totaled or rusts away, I plan to keep it forever. I know the JKs are higher tech but there is just something missing from the new Jeeps. Maybe the simplicity in form and function of earlier Jeeps is the element that is lost.

    Many years ago, I had friends that liked to off-road. The trails they are using in this vid are much like the paths we took to get to the places they would go off-roading. I don't see how these trails are a challenge to anything but 2x4 passenger vehicles.

    Like others pointed out, it was a silly comparison. I did notice the YJ guy was having more fun and the JK guy was wishing he was in the YJ. I sold my JK and went back to a YJ. I can listen to my YJ and tell you what's going on with the engine. I don't have to ask the mechanic to ask the computer. And seriously...automatic transmissions? Nope. Heated seats? Power windows? Off-roading with the air on? More reasons I gave up the JK.

      JK Rubicon would still take it. More suspension travel, more room for tires, electronic sway bar disconnects, and still nearly 100 hp more. The TJ used with the money sunk into it for the price of a new JK, the TJ would body bag it. But, stock for stock, the JK would still beat it out by a decent margin.

      Tyler Steen The JK rubicon has more horsepower at 6000 rpm than the TJ. Very few drive at those high rpms. At lower RPMS, needed for offroad, the TJ has a lot more. The power band is very different on the JK and the TJ engines. I doubt a TJ engine could even get to 6000 rpms. It was made for low end torque, not high end horsepower. The Pentstar 3.6 was rated at 6000 rpms. The 190 horsepower for the TJ was rated at a very usable 3500 rpms. It is just a low revving off road engine verses a high revving general purpose engine.

      Tyler Steen my 06 Rubicon has manual sway bar disconnects so I don’t have to worry about electronics failing. Outside of mud bogs or sand drags the 100 extra HP don’t mean anything, and my 4.0l torque curve is pretty close to that of a JK. Factoring in my much lower weight and possibly better gears (do JK Rubicons come with 4.11s?) I might have the advantage there. But the JK is almost as wide as a full-size pickup, I take my TJ down ATV trails with a 6’x8’ trailer to get firewood and I wouldn’t recommend following me with a JK unless you don’t like your fenders or paint.

      Hugo Huerta My 97 Jeep TJ with 35" Nitto Mud Grapplers, 3.5 Rubicon Lift kit, upgraded longer front and rear control arms, with 4.56 gears. I could do it blind folded. The stuff they did is equivalent to me going down to my house.

    Wow reading these comments are depressing "new jeeps dont feel like the old jeeps did", "jeeps has lost its offroad soul" non of that makes any since, i went from owning a cj to a jk, the jk is just more technical (only because they have to, to meet legal standards) My stock Jk sport handles better than my friends tj, and my others yj, if jeeps "lost its offroad soul" why would the newer ones offroad better than the new ones? I feel like 60% of the jeep community needs to stop living in the past and stop complaining about everything little thing jeep does, if you dont like it great, keep your old rusted jeep, just stop talking shit on stuff thats better And just accept it

    4 wheel drive is almost useless without lockers. It helps in soft sand/dirt but again, the right tires fix that. You won't be doing any crawling without lockers. I off road all the time and never once needed 4 wheel drive because I don't crawl. Plus that straight 6 is the best engine ever made. They can't die

    This whole video is almost worthless. It takes less than 5 min of watching to figure out it is obviously just a sponsor video for the new 2015 wranglers. Its pretty funny to compare a four door to a two door as well, especially sense you then have to account for wheel base spread. Also lockers do not come factory, they are a pricy add on. I owned two YJ's and am not a fan of course of their leaf suspension, but its still honestly just plain offensive to the jeep community to put up a video as false as this one. Different tires, different wheel base, different lift, and those are all aftermarket parts. Maybe if you had the idea of getting two stock vehicles (and that means bone stock and each being comparable from the factory package) this video would have been worth maybe 10 min of any jeepers time. I came with a smile and left pissed at this.

      OffRoadKingdom There's a reason why it's called a mashup. They don't exactly compete, but they mash them in one review. If they wanted a true apples to apples review they should have a 2dr non rubi jk against a yj. But they don't, and they titled it appropriately.

      ***** I Agree because its stock package was the Rubicon, if I do remember correctly, but what I was saying that they should have picked both the stock YJ and the stock JK. Not the rubicon V Sahara package. Why take far advanced tech that costs upwards of 40k to get when you can buy a yj for a 1/10 the cost and build it to perform better at that price, Including AC... SAT NAV... and..... dana 44s (screw the dana 44s, you could go 1 tons) plus a rear......... and front locker on 37's................ What GET SMACKED NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBLET,
      Only reason I'm saying that is because for less than 10k I built My jeep on my page and it could easily outperform both these jeeps. If I remember correctly Including the cost of the Jeep I put like 7-8k in it. So please before you tell me to quit bitching I suggest you go over your spending. oh yeah,

    I bought a 1995 Jeep Wangler Rio Grande when I was in college, when it first came out, brand new. 20 years later, I gave my Jeep to my son, and bought a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Willis Wheeler and am amazed the evolution. Once a Jeep always a Jeep person! Jeep Life!

    The new Jeeps are hawt but I fkn hate the unlimited, it's like seeing fat women in yoga pants and a sports bra... I understand it, but I cringe every time.

    That's part of the fun. I went out in the mud with the doors off. I have long hair and had it full of mud and of course it was dry by the time I got home. It was great. Lot of clean up though.

    That tiny little mud spot was a joke. I go through stuff far worse than that in my stock 95 YJ all the time. The only time my stock YJ with 31inch tires has been stuck is when I went through a water hole not knowing how deep the ruts where and buried my front diff in sand. Five minutes with a shovel and I was right back out. And that old school straight 6 is a die hard.
