I can’t wait to use some of the new mutate legendaries. The ability has so many cool and bizarre interactions like clone effects or morph. So with that in mind atrimi is probably my favorite ikoria commander. That and because it’s adorable~

Don't sleep on Winota. She's everything that's good about Commander: powerful, fun, and makes otherwise unplayed (read, "cheap") cards good all of a sudden. Excellent budget commander.
Design wise Nethroi is my favorite. I love the art and Reanimate is my favorite deck archetype in magic. My first ever deck was the Graveborn deck and I never lost a match after it added some suggested cards. My friends hated playing against it because depending on my opening hand they would lose on turn 3-5 and Nethroi reminds me of that deck... plus mutate seems like so much fun to me.
I just finished a Zirda list focused on graveyard synergies. Strong option for any Zirda deck: the creature card Glory. It's an incarnation with an activated ability from the graveyard. It becomes W: choose a color. Creatures you control gain protection from it until end of turn.
a interesting thing about zirda is that it is in a way a boros commander that helps with carddraw, because it makes these overcostet artifacts that draw cards way more playable
Hii Mitch. My friends all play Modern and we wanted to try get into Commander. We decided to pick 4 of your deck (upgraded to 200€). I wanted to ask what deck we should pick to create a balanced "mini-meta" that cover all the color pie and playstyle (i wanted to try political/stax and one of my friend is a graveyard player). Also this could be an idea for a future video, it will be super cool to take your old deck and make group of 4 that plays well against each other to create balanced experience. Anyway thanks for all of your work.
Kambal/Lavinia for stax, tatyova, brudiclad, and marchesa for graveyard. I chose the other two as all of these decks seem like they could work well together especially since the commanders are either hate bears or cost more mana. As long as you guys are just starting out if you’re not wanting to instantly go to the highest power level this seems very balanced
Temmet (tokens, uw) Meren (sacrifice, bg) Atheros (theft, wb) Firesong & Sunspeaker (spells, wr) Very different strategies, all 5 collors appear at least once, all of them are from the '50 or less' era, rather than '25 or less' and all of them are fairly recent so they'll have updated card pools. Have fun :v
I've been rolling around with an Illuna list for a month or two now and she is fantastic. She is by no means competitively built, but I've been debating building her in such a way that I would have a "one permanent combo" type thing going on. I've found that playing lots of creatures with interesting abilities like Arcanis the Omnipotent or Kiki-Jiki you can come up with some really goofy and highly interactive plays. You can run some library manipulation and spells that let you flash your mutations in to hit really powerful spells like Collosification from your library to one shot opponents with commander damage. Infect is also powerful with Illuna because she's got 6 power, and not everyone thinks to get rid of a Blight Mamba in the first two or three turns (Blight Mamba also comes with Regenerate, which is SUPER awesome with Illuna because you know she is a priority target for removal). All in all, Illuna has so much potential and dozens of build options to run. Probably my favorite Temur commander printed to date.
Illuna is very similar to Intet… which is one of my favourite (if not the favourite) commander of time… well, I’m thrilled by this similar but different approach. Can’t wait to finally build more Temur decks (counting Kalamax and Xyris too, temur is my favourite 3 colours😋)🥰
As much as Zirda peaks my intrests as a Feather player I am still not sold on the flaming fox seeing it gonna have the same treatement Feather got. Which even then the treatment of destory as soon as possable isn't the best answer when the best answer for Zirda is the blantantly the same as Feather, The Redeemed: Ignore the commander an starve resources so they can't cast spells or activate abilities. Reason being Zirda is just going to be the same as Feather: AKA I will just cast her again an continue on doing thing because there is still the resources to do basically anything from the amount of ramp that will occur.
My favorite commander for this set is definitely the enigma, built right it's got a lot of potential especially if you keep most of your permanents with a cmc of 3 or less which surprisingly still has some strong possibilities.
For me, i'm most interested in Nethroi Apex of Death. I'm just struggling with the deck building part. On paper, I agree with you- a low power aristocrat build makes sense. The problem I run into with that concept though is that I cannot grasp the "win condition" in my head. Spamming little effects such as Blood Artist ETC can whittle the opponents down yeah, but I'm just not sure what the big power plays are supposed to be. You mutate and revive 5+ creatures at once, you better be winning the game that turn or making a huge splash at least. But I don't see what cards I want to hit specifically. In my head, this commander feels like an upgraded version of Meren so to speak. In fact, I'd run both. Nethroi's mutate effect to bring back Meren and a handful of other things. Now when I sack those aristocrat creatures for value, i'm also getting experience counters for Meren who can revive one of them at end of turn. So they seem to synergize well. But again, I'm not sure what my "I'm ending the game now" play is. I want to go sacky and run the Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder combo for infinite life. I can use that life to fuel a same turn kill with Aetherflux Reservoir. Alternatively, that same life gain loop into Storm Herd would be dope. Then I either win next turn via combat, OR I sac them all to and win from Blood Artist ETC. Those are all well and good ideas I suppose, but i'm not sure how to pick cards for the rest of the 99 that will lead into each other well and be smooth. On the flip side though, the way Mutate works in that it basically stockpiles up card text and keywords to make a massive monster, I can't help but feel like that screams "staying power". What I mean by that is, you're building up the commander into this massive beast, let that go to work for you by itself even. Is it possible to entertain the idea of a "hate bear" tactic? Many of those hate bear cards are low power as well. Mass revive some annoying pseudo lock creatures and create a tough solid board state for yourself. You could also back this up with a life gain win condition as well. But unlike the aristocrat theme, you could actually go heavier into the slow but steady life gain here. I'm just really not sure either way. I can see some of the combo ideas, but I'm missing many of them.
Not sure if you've had any luck with the deck yet, but it's a super solid commander. My personal deck strategy is self mill, with some "lands matter" stuff, like ramunap, strip mine, cavalier of thorns, hermit druid, etc. It runs super smooth. And the inclusion of white is super solid for protection and exiling targets. And if you want it to be relatively competitive, you could put in the combos that normal abzan/golgari combos like necrotic ooze, protean hulk, mikaeus, etc. That paired with land hate is hilarious, but your playgroup might hate you, trust me lol

Since the virus hit and shut down my local shop (They are finally open again, but not able to host magic yet still) I haven't really touched Magic much. I have new decks since i last played; I built Defenders with Arcades the Strategiest (Casual fun deck), I built Nahiri Equipment (also casual), Jhoira Weatherlight Captain artifact goodness (middle of the road power level) and Otrimi infect (my "cutthroat" deck) Haven't yet played any of them though. So I probably hope to make Nethroi somewhere in between Jhoira and Otrimi. I do plan to have a sacky win the game combo with Eerie Ultimatum + Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder + Aetherflux Reservoir. But beyond that, I haven't given it more thought.... lol
I've been looking at Companions in a narrow way. I don't want to run them as Companions, but rather as Commanders WITH that restriction. Makes the deck building more challenging. So right now the Rakdos Hellion, Dimir Kraken, and Abzan Apex REALLY have my attention. I just want to Bolt someone for 6 in EDH.
Currently building a Illuna deck with 2 variations. 1) throwing in as many draws, counters, tutor, token creation instants and soreceries with thassas Oracle for the win. Then a top card deck
A hidden gem for Geruda, doom of depths would be a card from the Anje falconwrath deck. Its the 6 mana legendary who you can pay mana to steal stuff from other graveyards
Love me some Nethroi! Just keep in mind cards like splinterfright have P/T set at all times in all zones. So it won't have 0 power unless you have no creatures in your graveyard. Other than that, have fun building
Hey Mitch, if you do end up building a Tayam deck, keep an eye out for Clockwork Beetle. It creates a lot of value with Tayam but I haven't seen it in many of the deck lists online.
Im going to build around nethroi and Illuna, and some cards I'm thinking are good for nethroi might be polukranos and reyhan, and even temur saber tooth because returning nethroi to your hand lets you do it all over again, and with illuna I didnt even think about sandwurm convergence, its such an amazing idea
I know I'm late to the party, but there are a lot of creatures with 0 power in Abzan colors that enter with +1/+1 counters for a Nethroi deck. The Phantom cards from Judgement were my first thought, all cheap cards that can be pretty much endlessly brought back to life by Mutating Nethroi for an unkillable army since they don't take damage, they just lose counters until they die and get brought back over and over again. Add in cards like Polukranos Unchained, Golgari Raiders, Embodiment of Agonies, Fertilid, Multani, Kalonian Hydra, Nighthowler, etc. with Shanna, Sisay's Legacy as a beatstick ro boot. Finally, add in Syr Konrad and you have an unkillable, endlessly reanimating army that can easily kill without attacking.
I'm actually building a Snapdax deck right now and I'm surprised how good it looks despite Mutate being a new mechanic. Not to mention the perfect synergy it has with Zurgo Helmsmasher, it's like a double strike aura that can "bolt a creature" and get a 1+/1 counter from Zurgo's third ability before combat even starts.

Brokkos, Apex of Forever just looks so goddamn fun. I really just want to play Sultai tempo/battlecruiser and mutate Brokkos onto things like Thrun and Grunn the Lonely King to just smash in combat. Did I mention Berserk? I really want to Berserk and recast Brokkos and just outvalue the table XD
Zaxara is my favorite. I don't think I've seen Hydra tribal in a deck before and it's a commander that ramps which means the card is both utility and a card you can build around.
I feel like people overlook the fact that you don't actually get the cards exiled by Illuna back after you put something on the battlefield, so that Omniscience example would probably result in you destroying most of your library given that 98 of those 99 cards would be duds for Illuna's effect, which could very well mean destroying the things you wanted to cast for free in the first place, such as your combos and other win conditions. Illuna's effect is nothing like cascade, it is more or less inferior in every way aside from the fact that what it puts on the battlefield can't be countered.
I feel like Nethroi with either creatures that create tokens on etb or creatures that have 0 power but get +1/+1 for every land or something like that, or that enter with counters would be such stupid fun
not sure if you mentioned this in the video but i do believe that i read that if you mutate Snapdax eather ontop or below another crature that new "creature" will deal commander dmg as it was the Commander
I feel like I’m the only one excited for Winota. There are quite a few Human creatures that have etb effects that make non-human tokens; so I feel like she could be a fun yet fair mashup of some favorites like Yidris and Najeela. Snowball to victory!
I want to build a dedicated mutate deck. But after seeing the cycle of 3-color legendary mutates (Brokkos, Illuna, Nethroi, Snapdax, and Vadrok) I couldn't decide which one to build. Four of them have graveyard synergies already, so I think I will build a 5-color mutate deck. Throw em all in there!
I absolutely love Illuna and can't wait to use it for dropping bombs, but I'm ecstatic to build Cheville (also known as Golgari Matthas) and seeing about building a deck for the Orphanguard companion. Not sure who the commander will be just yet though. I'm thinking Nethroi or Tayam from Commander 2020.
Will you do a future video on some of these commanders? Really curious about Illuna myself. I find a pity that Illuna doesn't really seem to work with Kalamax, whereas the other apex work in some way with their corresponding (in terms of colours) commander deck. Illuna cares about permanents, Kalamax cares about instants...
My fav is Illuna bc it's pretty much a nerfed food chain deck. Which is great for my whiny baby pod. Idk why people completely miss the fact that it's a FC build.
Folks were excited to run Thousand-Year Storm in Kalamax, but Illunia can guarantee you draw it every game. Worth thinking about if you've been trying to force TYS to work.
How about the jeskai mutate legend, that can allow all of your cards to be put into the command zone (build a deck not to win, but to lose in the most ridiculous way possible)
So this doesn't work with Leadership Vacuum I don't think. Can't you just use Claws of Gix to sac Vadrok since going to the Command Zone is a Replacement Effect? The card never actually hits the Graveyard so I think the other mutated creatures would still go with it. Alternatively any other bounce or sac-as-cost spell if you need the trigger. The draw off of Leadership Vacuum isn't optional so I think you'd draw yourself out before you could get everything in your Command Zone with the combo as written.
Alternatively perhaps there's a way to make it work if you run as many other Mutate creatures in those colors as possible. Stack as many as you can on Vadrock to reduce the number of times you need to Leadership Vacuum.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Azorius companion go infinite with felidar guardian? You'd need to find something to deal damage on entering and leaving the battlefield, which isn't the easiest thing to do with those colors but I believe it's possible
Will you do a decktech on Mutate? Really interested in the mechanic around EDH but I understand how vulnerable it is to removal, wondering if there is a good mid tier to lowhigh tier build around it.
I'd use Zirda with mobilization and blaring recruiter to pump out a bunch of tokens for 1 mana each. Also Zirda might make armistice not-terrible, this giving a decent source of repeatable card draw in white.
I'm just curious on what you think about the other Boris commander in the set, winota, joiner of forces. Personally it's my favorite since it gives boros card advantage and does what boros was meant to do. Non stop swinging!!!
Also Zirda for me. Oh man, the stuff she can do.. Cheat 6, 8, 10 or even more mana in cost reduction per turn? Don't mind if I do. But will I have any friends left afterwards? Probably not...

It's so stupid that Nethroi isn't the secondary commander for the Kathril deck. I mean, it has 2 keywords, and it can return creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield. Kathril is gonna have creatures in it's graveyard, so nethroi is gonna be a must have for that deck. i much rather have nethroi than tayam as the secondary commander. Also Zirda is basically just the naruto 9-tailed fox of mtg
Fyi, splinterfright and other cards like it have the same P/T regardless of where they are so it wouldn't work well with Nethroi. Golgari Grave-Troll however would work because it's a 0/0 that gets +1/+1 counters
I just ADORE Snapdax but I don't know in which direction to send him. I already plan on building a mutate deck with Otrimi so I don't want to do the exact same thing but in Mardu colors... Infect is an interesting option, I'd love to hear other opinions as well if possible!
Library is kinda meh, you just delay your own win condition by putting discarded cards back on your deck. The most insane cards in playtesting were the big repeatable loot effects from Bazaar of Baghdad and Magus of the Bazaar. Lion's Eye Diamond, Wheel of Fortune, Breakthrough and Firestorm are also ridiculous. Certainly not a budget build tho (deckstats.net/decks/104098/1608954-rielle-the-everwise-scepter-br/en).

Not sure if you've had any luck with the deck yet, but it's a super solid commander. My personal deck strategy is self mill, with some "lands matter" stuff, like ramunap, strip mine, cavalier of thorns, hermit druid, etc. It runs super smooth. And the inclusion of white is super solid for protection and exiling targets.
And if you want it to be relatively competitive, you could put in the combos that normal abzan/golgari combos like necrotic ooze, protean hulk, mikaeus, etc. That paired with land hate is hilarious, but your playgroup might hate you, trust me lol

Since the virus hit and shut down my local shop (They are finally open again, but not able to host magic yet still) I haven't really touched Magic much. Been slowly deck building things, but just haven't gotten around to this one yet.
Not sure what power level I intend this deck to be though. I have new decks since i last played; I built Defenders with Arcades the Strategiest (Casual fun deck), I built Nahiri Equipment (also casual), Jhoira Weatherlight Captain artifact goodness (middle of the road power level) and Otrimi infect (my "cutthroat" deck) Haven't yet played any of them though. So I probably hope to make Nethroi somewhere in between Jhoira and Otrimi.
I do plan to have a sacky win the game combo with Eerie Ultimatum + Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder + Aetherflux Reservoir. But beyond that, I haven't given it more thought.... lol
I've been looking at Companions in a narrow way. I don't want to run them as Companions, but rather as Commanders WITH that restriction. Makes the deck building more challenging. So right now the Rakdos Hellion, Dimir Kraken, and Abzan Apex REALLY have my attention. I just want to Bolt someone for 6 in EDH.
I'm a fan of Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy. Doubling up your mana rocks is fun, and you can use him to cheat crazy creatures into play at instant speed.
Currently building a Illuna deck with 2 variations. 1) throwing in as many draws, counters, tutor, token creation instants and soreceries with thassas Oracle for the win. Then a top card deck
A hidden gem for Geruda, doom of depths would be a card from the Anje falconwrath deck. Its the 6 mana legendary who you can pay mana to steal stuff from other graveyards
Love me some Nethroi! Just keep in mind cards like splinterfright have P/T set at all times in all zones. So it won't have 0 power unless you have no creatures in your graveyard. Other than that, have fun building
Hey Mitch, if you do end up building a Tayam deck, keep an eye out for Clockwork Beetle. It creates a lot of value with Tayam but I haven't seen it in many of the deck lists online.
Im going to build around nethroi and Illuna, and some cards I'm thinking are good for nethroi might be polukranos and reyhan, and even temur saber tooth because returning nethroi to your hand lets you do it all over again, and with illuna I didnt even think about sandwurm convergence, its such an amazing idea
I know I'm late to the party, but there are a lot of creatures with 0 power in Abzan colors that enter with +1/+1 counters for a Nethroi deck. The Phantom cards from Judgement were my first thought, all cheap cards that can be pretty much endlessly brought back to life by Mutating Nethroi for an unkillable army since they don't take damage, they just lose counters until they die and get brought back over and over again.
Add in cards like Polukranos Unchained, Golgari Raiders, Embodiment of Agonies, Fertilid, Multani, Kalonian Hydra, Nighthowler, etc. with Shanna, Sisay's Legacy as a beatstick ro boot.
Finally, add in Syr Konrad and you have an unkillable, endlessly reanimating army that can easily kill without attacking.
I'm actually building a Snapdax deck right now and I'm surprised how good it looks despite Mutate being a new mechanic. Not to mention the perfect synergy it has with Zurgo Helmsmasher, it's like a double strike aura that can "bolt a creature" and get a 1+/1 counter from Zurgo's third ability before combat even starts.
We need to have Mitch design a shirt that on the front says "first off there's wayfarers bauble" on he back has the commanders quarters pig

Brokkos, Apex of Forever just looks so goddamn fun. I really just want to play Sultai tempo/battlecruiser and mutate Brokkos onto things like Thrun and Grunn the Lonely King to just smash in combat. Did I mention Berserk? I really want to Berserk and recast Brokkos and just outvalue the table XD
For Rielle I'd probably play some wheels but I'd base the deck around jump-start so that the effects don't cost card advantage

Zaxara is my favorite. I don't think I've seen Hydra tribal in a deck before and it's a commander that ramps which means the card is both utility and a card you can build around.

I feel like people overlook the fact that you don't actually get the cards exiled by Illuna back after you put something on the battlefield, so that Omniscience example would probably result in you destroying most of your library given that 98 of those 99 cards would be duds for Illuna's effect, which could very well mean destroying the things you wanted to cast for free in the first place, such as your combos and other win conditions. Illuna's effect is nothing like cascade, it is more or less inferior in every way aside from the fact that what it puts on the battlefield can't be countered.
I feel like Nethroi with either creatures that create tokens on etb or creatures that have 0 power but get +1/+1 for every land or something like that, or that enter with counters would be such stupid fun
not sure if you mentioned this in the video but i do believe that i read that if you mutate Snapdax eather ontop or below another crature that new "creature" will deal commander dmg as it was the Commander

I feel like I’m the only one excited for Winota. There are quite a few Human creatures that have etb effects that make non-human tokens; so I feel like she could be a fun yet fair mashup of some favorites like Yidris and Najeela. Snowball to victory!

I want to build a dedicated mutate deck. But after seeing the cycle of 3-color legendary mutates (Brokkos, Illuna, Nethroi, Snapdax, and Vadrok) I couldn't decide which one to build. Four of them have graveyard synergies already, so I think I will build a 5-color mutate deck. Throw em all in there!
For nethroi have cards that enter and then get plus one counted on them and go that build
I absolutely love Illuna and can't wait to use it for dropping bombs, but I'm ecstatic to build Cheville (also known as Golgari Matthas) and seeing about building a deck for the Orphanguard companion. Not sure who the commander will be just yet though. I'm thinking Nethroi or Tayam from Commander 2020.
Will you do a future video on some of these commanders? Really curious about Illuna myself. I find a pity that Illuna doesn't really seem to work with Kalamax, whereas the other apex work in some way with their corresponding (in terms of colours) commander deck. Illuna cares about permanents, Kalamax cares about instants...
Use permanents that care about instants (Twinning Staff, Mirari, Thousand-Year Storm)
I got to say, that the boros companion is the one I am mostly interesting in. Its something different in those colours.
My fav is Illuna bc it's pretty much a nerfed food chain deck. Which is great for my whiny baby pod. Idk why people completely miss the fact that it's a FC build.

Folks were excited to run Thousand-Year Storm in Kalamax, but Illunia can guarantee you draw it every game. Worth thinking about if you've been trying to force TYS to work.
How about the jeskai mutate legend, that can allow all of your cards to be put into the command zone (build a deck not to win, but to lose in the most ridiculous way possible)

So this doesn't work with Leadership Vacuum I don't think. Can't you just use Claws of Gix to sac Vadrok since going to the Command Zone is a Replacement Effect? The card never actually hits the Graveyard so I think the other mutated creatures would still go with it. Alternatively any other bounce or sac-as-cost spell if you need the trigger. The draw off of Leadership Vacuum isn't optional so I think you'd draw yourself out before you could get everything in your Command Zone with the combo as written.
Alternatively perhaps there's a way to make it work if you run as many other Mutate creatures in those colors as possible. Stack as many as you can on Vadrock to reduce the number of times you need to Leadership Vacuum.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Azorius companion go infinite with felidar guardian? You'd need to find something to deal damage on entering and leaving the battlefield, which isn't the easiest thing to do with those colors but I believe it's possible
Yorion's return trigger is delayed until the end step. But the value created by that engine is very high.

Will you do a decktech on Mutate? Really interested in the mechanic around EDH but I understand how vulnerable it is to removal, wondering if there is a good mid tier to lowhigh tier build around it.
I'd use Zirda with mobilization and blaring recruiter to pump out a bunch of tokens for 1 mana each. Also Zirda might make armistice not-terrible, this giving a decent source of repeatable card draw in white.

Zirda could be really nice in a Jeskai deck because of cards like Spectral Sailor, paying 1-Blue for a repeatable card is pretty nice.
I'm just curious on what you think about the other Boris commander in the set, winota, joiner of forces. Personally it's my favorite since it gives boros card advantage and does what boros was meant to do. Non stop swinging!!!

It's so stupid that Nethroi isn't the secondary commander for the Kathril deck. I mean, it has 2 keywords, and it can return creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield. Kathril is gonna have creatures in it's graveyard, so nethroi is gonna be a must have for that deck. i much rather have nethroi than tayam as the secondary commander. Also Zirda is basically just the naruto 9-tailed fox of mtg

Fyi, splinterfright and other cards like it have the same P/T regardless of where they are so it wouldn't work well with Nethroi. Golgari Grave-Troll however would work because it's a 0/0 that gets +1/+1 counters
I just ADORE Snapdax but I don't know in which direction to send him. I already plan on building a mutate deck with Otrimi so I don't want to do the exact same thing but in Mardu colors... Infect is an interesting option, I'd love to hear other opinions as well if possible!
Could also voltron onto things with counters. Because when you mutate you keep counters.

Zirta is potentially a great cycling commander. Get to abuse things like Mastery of the Unseen too.

Yeah. It's an alternate casting cost so you still have to pay the commanders tax.

Library is kinda meh, you just delay your own win condition by putting discarded cards back on your deck. The most insane cards in playtesting were the big repeatable loot effects from Bazaar of Baghdad and Magus of the Bazaar. Lion's Eye Diamond, Wheel of Fortune, Breakthrough and Firestorm are also ridiculous. Certainly not a budget build tho (deckstats.net/decks/104098/1608954-rielle-the-everwise-scepter-br/en).

You can put a companion in your 99 (or in Standard put up to four of them in your 60) without having to stick to the companion restrictions.
