Looking at their website, my LGS seems to have opened exactly one box, same result as Prof's box #2. My prerelease packs were the same.
What was going on with that first box: Foil Lurrus, Foil Alt Art Narset, Alt Art Lucca, Kinnan, Broodmoth, Vivien and even more!

My first pack in my box had a foil Lurrus and Broodmoth. Unfortunately, pretty much all downhill after that. Not nearly as many alt comic arts as I was hoping for.
And it was like a couple bucks over what he paid for it

@@antoniobush4560 well yea boxes aren't really supposed to get you their value back, especially if you exclude all cards under 2 dollars. Though this was 140 precent over. It would have been at least 20 extra dollars if he included cards valued at between 1-2. And not to mention the bulk under 1. Of course that's only relevant if you are a gamestore but realistically that's the people who sell all their cards.

That first box was incredible. The second much more like the one I got. Oh well, I got to help out my LGS which is why I bought it to begin with.

To be fair this set has the lowest expected value of cards out of any set in Magic. (It is currently around $67 as of writing this) Along with the corona virus stuff, a month delay, and a recession this makes it pretty hard to pull $100 out of this booster box currently. You're second box was a little under this but was about normal. Your first box was very abnormal, pulled one of the best foil rares and got a lot of planeswalkers.
If all this stuff wasn't going on, and the hype of the set was at it's peak (a month ago, since all the MTG arena people have been playing with it) I think this set would have kept you going to 5-6 boxes.
I feel like.. aside from companions, Ikoria was a fine set. It isn't broken but has fun cards. The way Magic should be.
I feel the same about the last few sets. A few very pushed cards spoiled much of these sets in the eyes of the community, but beyond that they're not bad at all.

Apart from companions that you have already mentioned, most of mythics and rares have entire walls of texts of what the card can do, and we are are talking of creatures with CMC usually 2-4. Vivian and the new red planeswalker can easily be a 5 CMC "I win the game" (although admittedly not as ridicolous as Oko).
Also, utate is one of the most confusing mechanics in years, although I admit the "build your monster" concept is interesting and can be fun, despite me personally not particularly liking it but that's of course a matter of taste (I also find a joke these creature types with cat dinosaur nightmare and things like that).

I have seen several of your Booster Box Games and usually the ticker is slowly trickling up with many cards being slightly above $2 and some big value cards every now and then. But this time around that didn't really happen; stuff was either below $1.50 of above $5 with very little in between. Hit the triomes, a planeswalker or one of the other select few cards or bust.
Even most companions and all ultimatums are super low; not to mention the box toppers.
I wonder how these prices will change once normal play is possible again - for now it seems you can easily pick up some great rare and mythic singles for cheap.
I don't think they will change, it's just like with theros where thx to the mystery booster the price of everything but a handfull of cards just drop down to a very cheap price, which I as a player don't mind realy because I can get those 3 colored lands for super cheap even their special alternate art version !
(but it seems that the prices don't drop as badly as with theros I think ??? Not sure and don't want to make a comparision right now ^^")
Part of it is due to the delayed physical release. People had plenty of time to play with the cards online and figure out what was good or not, which resulted in prices leveling out before the cards made it to stores.
If you were to compare what prices were like for previous sets a month after release they would be much closer to this.
People and The Prof keep telling me about things called "formats"and "drafts" when talking about Magic.... I'm all like "wait, so you're telling me that people are allowed to have decks with LESS than 100 cards in them?"
Man, you say that like it's fun. That being said, draft and sealed are VERY fun so the 40 card deck challenges are actually great to play with because of the random factors.
But for any of the 60 card setups? Meh, I'll take anything but that please.

i havent bought packs in ages and when i got my ikoria box i was disappointed that the rares were up front. part of the wonder was slowly go through and seeing the final card

I recently opened mystery booster box like I dunno how many months after release and got more value from it about 145 euros than from a single display of the last 3 sets... Eldraine but 67 theros about 79 and ikoria about 70
Singles is always the way to go. These sets are just tanking so much.
@@apophis456 Not worth it if you're just wasting money. The thrill of a box is an empty promise, even more so with the last 2 sets. You can support your LGS in smarter ways while not damaging your wallet.

Where are they from if the token and rare are in back?
@@duditsgrey5148 Tokens and rare in the back is the default for American and European printing facilities. Not sure where else they might print cards, but to my knowledge it's only cards printed in Japan that have the "poofier" booster packs and reversed card order.
I was surprised to see English-language/market boosters for a normal Standard set printed in Japan, since I believe they've only done it for a few supplemental sets like Battlebond before.
I came to this video after watching the whole podcast from yesterday. I have to admit, watching Prof's meltdown two times in one day had reinvigorated my spirit.

Watching from Europe where sealed products are actually more expensive and singles are cheaper than in US. Here, there is absolutely no reason to buy a box for value as there is very small chance to make your money back.
Yes, watching from Europe too and we have to divide the price of a box between 6 players in draft to continue to play the game
They recently increased the price of all products and i'ts been difficult to keep playing
For my collection I only buy singles but not when a set is realesed but instead when it rotates from standard, so I can get good cards for modern and EDH
@@bluenorth3965 Cardmarket. There are lots of sellers who keep prices cheap. Also non-english cards are even cheaper if you don't care.
I am wondering: with all these collectors foil showcase boxtopper alternative artwork stuff that WotC keeps putting out on the market with every set and inbetween, isn't it to be expected that the regular booster boxes' financial value are hitting rock bottom?
Of course Ikoria came out in a very particular situation with the lockdowns around the world, but if I recall correctly something similar was already happening with Theros BD.

When I buy a booster box, I get no planeswalkers at all.
The professor opens a booster box, he gets every planeswalker in the set. Some people have all the luck.
Many magic the gathering players ask the question: Is it worth it to undermine the fundamental rules of magic by allowing players to start the game with an 8 card hand?

FYI, when cards are printed in Japan, the rares are in front. (Also, the packs are sealed differently.) US printed packs have the rares in the back.
Interesting. I bought 2 boxes at the same time from my LGS, 1 was from japan the other from US. The Japan box was closer to the 1st box opened in this video, the US box was crap....only 2 mythics and more than 12 repeat rares in the same box.

First edition boxes come from Japan. Different packaging, different order of cards. Not sure about cardstock.
Seems like every set with a topper has correspondingly less value in the set.

Seeing how low the prices for really good rares like Winota or Gyruda are, and how hard it is to get enough wildcards, I actually consider going back to cardboard Magic...

I don't mean to say that a low price is a bad thing, but it does surprise me that the Companions aren't more expensive, considering the impact that they're having everywhere except pauper. I guess that is because they're only 1-offs?
I will always open booster boxes (if I have the money) because I love it and I try to collect the sets. It's a fun and exciting way to start off the set binder.
Also I like the idea to have some cards for trading with friends. It's also a good way to support my LGS as they rarely open products for singles.
Tbh I also still don't grasp that people open these to make money. I feel that it is almost impossible to make it work as there is too much randomness and in the end it's usually at most 10 cards per set that really matter in a financial sense.
Who cares about ikoria anymore? It's all about DOUBLE MASTERS!!! aruguekenfbfiifi hype train!!
Drafting is one of the best ways to play the game and luckily these sets are still affordable for that 👍

At least WoTC has confirmed that they will reprint fetchies this year (hopefully not as mythics in some sort of modern masters for 15 euros a pack), so let's hope for the best.

That first box was very good I opened The same amount of foil and alt art mythics but zero walkers but only fucking 3 different versions of snapdax AND MY GODZILLA PROMO WAS SNAPDAX TOO. Man fuck that card
Now I'm worried about my box sitting in my LGS... the EV of an IKO box can totally be determined by the Box Topper: get a Ghidorah & you're halfway through $100, get a Dorat (like me, & Prof) & you'd better pray to the RNG deities the box is sweet...
All the sets and announcements so far this year have felt off to me. Theros2 was neat , I guess, but I felt no spark of joy for Ikoria, nor the C20 decks, nor this "Double Masters" thing... the Teferi cards have pissed me off when I was playing Standard so the Core 2021 set is leaving me hesitant, and no Fetchlands in Zendikar is no bueno.
Guess I'll look at buying MTG again in 2021 - thanks for letting me live vicariously Prof!

The disparity between the two boxes staggers the imagination! I still, for the life of me, cannot understand why WotC can’t do better. Every rare and mythic in boxes should be alternate art, foil, or full art. The box toppers should NEVER be less than rare. And, the land slot should be a specialty land. I understand that this would ultimately degrade the value of such cards somewhat, but magic players would be more inclined to buy multiple boxes of cards, rather than pass on buying even one for fear of being royally screwed on the pulls. The two boxes I opened were much like the second box opening here, and it’s just horribly disappointing to not even get a regular art planeswalker card out of it! But I got two of every ultimatum card, YAY! And then I watch this first box opening and read Liam Crackmaster’s post below and think, “WTF Wizards? Are you even attempting to make these boxes relatively even? Thanks a lot for the box full of $.25 bulk rares and bonus cardboard!” Somebody up top needs to fire the entire company and restart from scratch with some new fresh minds who are customer oriented in their thinking. They’ve just become sloppy and uncaring now that they’ve reached the gozillion dollar mark. It’s just sad. 😞

I bought a booster box of Ikoria. It was the 1st box I've bought in over 12 years. I have to admit it was very lack luster. My box was between the Prof's 2 boxes. Not quite as good as his 1st but better than his 2nd. But I thought it would help my card base because I just got back into MTG in March. I'm so disappointed at how many cards have been banned or cant use in commander. It's the only format I play till LGS's open. Anyways enough rambling. Thank you for all the content. I'm so glad I found this channel.
I managed to pull 2 Narset of the Ancient Ways out of one Prerelease kit. Pretty cool right?
Didn't realize how lucky I was getting the mothra box topper... And to everyone saying purchase singles..where?? Card kingdom is sold out of most of the staples, they didn't even have a single fetchland in stock last time I checked. Many format necessities are out of stock like wayfarer's bauble and fabled passage. Channel fireball is practically begging people to sell their cards to them, offering all these different giveaways for the last couple months. And tcgplayer is a royal pain if you order several hundred cards at a time like myself, I don't want 100 different envelopes arriving at my home from 100 different sellers. My lgs is closed until further notice ):
Looking at the prices that you pulled is crazy to see the prices increased so much in the past couple years I’m talking about you the ozolith
I think your format has way too much variance in it. Would you play the booster game, i.e buying one booster and seeing if you get your value? You'd stop at 1 booster almost all the time. Could you consider selling 4-of for uncommons totalling over $2? I think in terms of value, you're misrepresenting the set somewhat. Using your logic of applying a $2 filter, then good sets to buy tend to be those which have a high number of cards above $2, rather than expansions with a few high-valued cards but a ton of average stuff, value wise.
I think applying the logic to a pack of 6 or 10 boxes would be smoothe out the variance and be more representative of the set. The idea here is that you would NOT buy another 6 boxes, simply declare the value to be good or bad based on how much you could sell the content for.
Watching this a year later...
1. I'm amazed at some of the cards that even broke $2 considering most aren't even thought about.
2. I'm surprised we even got to Box #2

So, how come when you buy a mtg theme deck it doesn’t come with a rule book? I am a complete noob to the game and bought two decks to try and learn how to play. However, there is no rule books. I understand that there is many different ways of playing, but why not a rule book with modern and standard rules? I also play Pokémon and have bought many theme decks and every single one came with a rule book and explanation on how to play.
Please, Professor, could you make a video explaining how to play standard and modern?
There are plenty of videos out there but, from what I have seen from your other videos, you are extremely thorough and for someone who has never played before, I need that.

I'm sorry you got hosed on box 2, Prof. This was my first box with a topper and we pulled a foil Ghidorah so i figured the toppers would all be Godzilla monsters. Thank you for providing this service. My wife won't let me play The Booster Box game.
I wasn’t very lucky with the box, cause I got back half of the box value. But I pulled a foil spacegodzilla for the box topper and is just awesome!!
I’d love to find an lgs that payed 100% market value for cards, lol. I get it, why would they? They wouldn’t profit, but one of the local stores near me only gives 25%. So you’d need to pull 4x the value from one box in order to pay for the next box.
I watched this to see if it would be worth it to buy some packs randomly to get Godzilla cards, but I don't understand the distribution of those. Is it only one Godzilla card per box in that topper? I'm not a Magic player, but I enjoy your videos. You do good work.
My girlfriend and I spent our third anniversery just drafting and playing pack-wars of ikoria because we were in lockdown and couldn't go out. High value or low value, this set and it's draft booster box will always hold a special place in my heart.
The card order in the packs will change based on where the box was printed. Japanese printed boxes have the cards "backwards," with the rares in front. USA printed boxes have the commons in front. :)
I opened two boxes and they were garbage, I didnt get any good mythics, and I got 2-4 copies of garbage rares, wouldn't even had been fun to draft.
Edit: I did pull 3 Lurrus, one of which is foil, but I also opened them the day it was banned in everything.
My box topper was Ghidorah. I was lucky. My box's value was decent.
Where does this humble man get his price checks from!? I just got 1 regular lukka, 2 alternate art lukkas and 1 foil alternate art lukka in my booster box. I'm only halfway done as of now!!
I lucked up and pulled a foil Ghidorah, King of the Cosmos. If I hadn't pulled that though, I wouldn't have come close to making my money back...
And here I was disappointed when I got Spacegodzilla for my boxtopper (and in the collectors booster I opened).

Really cool set (Companions excluded). Really confusing amount of products and alternate arts. Really low value.
Man... I opened 2 boxes yesterday, only 1 triome total while prof is opening foil and alt art triome's like they're uncommons T_T
I may be coming at this from a different perspective. That said, while someone with a strategy would be better off buying the individual cards they want, wouldn’t that ruin the surprise of opening up a booster pack and finding out what is inside? Am I just not thinking g about this like you all are?
You know the godzilla lands on arena are 20k gold when you buy in for the arena open event.
My local gaming group bought a total of eight displays (I refuse to call them booster boxes) and not even a single one was worth what we paid for it. We also didn't have a single booster in which the cards were placed in reverse order (with the token at the top, so to speak). Still, I got all the cards I was gunning for in my display, so I'm not really gonna complain.
Engaged with Prof gambling to remind us to not gamble. Buy singles for LGS support and buy packa for the feel of opening them first thing in Draft.
