This movie had a huge impact on me as an early teen. As a young aspiring musician, I was spellbound by the music. Even to this day, I still recall the melodies and lyrics. I even have the soundtrack recording. I see some comments about how they believe the movie was a disaster, but I can't understand why people say that. It was a delightful movie. It just seems like folks are critical just for the sake of being critical without any real reasoning. Some say it just came at a time when musicals were becoming less popular. I am glad that it was made. I still adore this movie, and it brings me joy.
This movie has its fans. I love the Bacharach score. The movie is too well made to be called "bad". It came out at a time when musicals were an easy target.
@@cscarson8798 Yes. I think if it had come along a bit earlier, it would have been a huge hit. The industry was clearly taking a turn - just 4 years later came big block busters like Star Wars episode IV.
Great to hear the complimentary comments, since I was in this film. Had the privilege of being in scenes choreographed by Hermes Pan (Fred Astaire's choreographer), Liv Ullman and others
Unfortunately, by 1973 America was sliding head first into the abyss and entertained itself with Magnum Force, Serpico and the # 1 movie The Exorcist. Now look at us.
then you would have seen my pictures on the LP "lip" section where all the kids are pictured (ala "Sound of Music" type pose) with Liv Ullman - gorgeous lade!!
These clips are making me want to chance it again. I remember being aghast at it in the theatre but maybe, maybe I might (gulp) actually like it. I' love to at a least hear the Bacharach/David music in its intended context. And any movie that would give Bobby Van a job at that point in his career has to be appreciated.
What an exquisite, lovingly edited piece here Cliff. You have a true gift with editing, (not to mention up-scaling) and it is in abundance here. 'Lost Horizon' was one of the most egregiously maligned, misunderstood films ever produced. I still say our understandably jaded American movie going populace due to BS wars like Vietnam, etc...not to mention the jaded critics who couldn't see past their own lust for cinematic boundary pushing, owe this film an official formal apology. I absolutely love how all encompassing Lost Horizon is as a film, you can't tell if it's a war movie, a romantic comedy, a fantasy adventure, a musical, a psychological drama or a Horror movie. It's ALL of these things, and the film is all the better because of it, not to mention a litany of soul stirring, unforgettable songs which should have brought Burt and Hal closer together instead of tearing them apart. Just heartbreaking, and this film deserves some damn respect not to mention a SERIOUS reissue!
Thank you for this tribute to my all-time favourite movie! I have endlessly enjoyed this movie for the last 50 years. Where did you find the orchestral score?
It bombed at the box office, but i like the movie!! I can see why people took the piss out of it, but you watch the original and this one its quite nice!
It was termed 'Lost Investment', but I loved the message of the movie, and of course all its songs. Btw, I am a huge fan of the Shangri-La hotel chain too (any coincidence?)
It was at a time when sex and violence were poplar in the Movies this Movie was the opposite pure goodness Still believe it's a wonderful fabulous entertaining movie a masterpiece of film when you see it it makes you feel Really good inside 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love this filmed version, even though, as in the Hilton novel, it does suffer from impossible circumstances. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trashing it in the slightest. The film must be taken as fantasy without question.
I agree. It was post CABARET that redefined the musical genre. It was also released in 1973 at the height of the edgy filmmaking that EASY RIDER triggered in 1967.
My very favourite movie of all time ....simply gorgeous
I understand why. I believe it too.

It's a great delight with a timeless message of peace, kindness, love. Underrated score by Bacharach and David (their last).

Great! I sang in the movie in two songs. The movie was much better than received. Great music

Never let people steer you away from a movie you may enjoy, whatever its reputation. Give it a chance and make up your own mind.
I agree
Burt Bacharach is one of the best composers who ever lived
It never deserved its bad reputation...it's actually one of the best movies of the 1970s.
I agree with you. Yes, there are a few things about it for which I don't have the greatest affection, but overall, it's a great production.
Outstanding movie 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This film and Billy Jack are so underrated that they became fantastic films to watch, for sure !!!!!

Ive still got the LP a most treasured album.

Great movie, one of the best musicals of all time!
I agree. The story, acting and music are wonderful
The score was world class. I think it could have been well received if released 5 years sooner.
Or even ten. It's a great film.
If released in 1969 it would have rated better than that awful Hello Dolly !!!!!

If it wasn't for The Sting being somewhat better, this film could have won Best Picture of 1973 as well, think about it 😊😊😊😊😊
I saw it when I was in Girl Scouts. I enjoyed it very much❤

Yes, it's definitely a fairytale and should be looked upon as such.
Thanks for this. Please add an apostrophe for the possessive in “everyman’s.” Thank you.
Assisti esse filme em 1974.Era menor de idade e não pude assistir ao O Exorcista que era proibido para menores de18 anos.
The film wasn't as bad as people said. It simply was made and released at the wrong time...

@@cscarson8798 You are correct. Also the "Golden Age of Porn" was now mainstream.
The film was a disaster but the soundtrack is priceless.
Artistically, the film is a triumphant of filmmaking from an era that no longer exists.
An unmitigated disaster of a film. But Valley of The Dolls is still my favorite worst.
When did you last see it?
