My name is Diana Lee and for 55 years I was blessed with a busy studio singing career. I provided Liv Ullmann’s singing voice for this movie, doing the songs The World is a Circle, Where Knowledge Ends (Fath Begins) and the duet I Might Frighten Her Away. My ex husband provided Peter Finch’s singing voice. Both Finch and Ullmann were delightful to work with and we all had such high hopes for this movie. OMG, bombs away!! Rotten Tomatoes gave it 17%. One day soon after I ran into George Kennedy in the market, introduced myself and we stood there together commiserating, lol
Actually the film did enormous business in its foreign markets. It returned its money to its investors. Only in America was it a financial disappointment. As for rotten tomatoes, that's not an accurate barometer in which to judge a film. There's only 6 reviews determining it and 250 people weighing in at 46%. Lost Horizon has its fans. It's a cult film. Both the DVD and Blu-ray sold out all its units.
The movie had its problems, but for this 13 year old in 1973 the music, from a composer I fell in love with back in 1966, was huge in my life back then and even now. Thank you to the person who stitched all the best of the this movie together! Wow!
It's why I live the soundtrack shyer returning from Vietnam where I lost hope for all mankind. But music and lyrics such is these tamed some of my anger. Peace to you all 🕊️
Interesting point: I admit I didn't like the movie but it reminds me that we often get really good soundtrack and cast albums from such shows. Star! the Gert Lawrence biopic with Julie et al was dreary but the record album by itself was enjoyable for me, not to mention it led me to a lot of other great music I could not have recognized when I was that young. How Now, Dow Jones? has a lot of clever melodies by E Bernstein and smart-alecky lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, but I've read that the show itself, as a whole, was worse than anything in ever (I haven't seen it though). Many other examples.
The music from this movie which I played on a LP lifted me out of a deep depression and led to a major life change. Later I read the book and loved it's theme. Grateful 40+ years later!
The memories of my youth with its dreams come rushing back to me when I stumbled on this video by accident. I was 17 and was embarking on a lifestyle change. This movie I watched with eyes wide open. Everything at that time was new to me. It reinforced in me a desire to live a good, clean life before God.
I was a dreamy 13 when I saw this musical and fell in love with it. People who are looking at this today naturally do not understand the draw it had on many of the teens in that day. It was still a time of innocence with room to just be a kid. Sure brings back special memories. Those who do not like it, do not have to, but it is a cult classic for many of us 13 year olds of the day :) Thank you for taking us down memory lane!
Loved it when it came out......And Now with the Films out there now...I stick with the older Films......Burt Bacharach will be sadly Missed....His Music will be Timeless.
I don't care what the critics say, it's a feel good fantasy/adventure musical. I could also call South Pacific and Brigadoon sappy maybe less amateurish. It was made for its time when we were kids growing up which many here brings with them memories of happier times. For me, it is accessible (and I don't generally like musicals).
I think all of us who saw this as 11 year olds disagree with the critics. This is a magnificent movie and the music has haunted me (in a lovely way) my entire life.
Thank you for putting this video together...I saw this film several times as a teenager and tis brings back many pleasant memories of that time. Thank you!
@@bobjohnson1587 Most film musicals have someone whose singing is dubbed. The Sound of Music for example, the Captain, several of the nuns and the children are ALL dubbed. West Side Story, practically ALL the principals are dubbed, etc. It's very rare you can get an actor who can act the part and sing also or a singer who can sing the part but can't act it. The results can be disastrous. Look at Lucille Ball in MAME.
The film wasn't very good, but I loved the songs when I saw it in 1973, and they are still wonderful. Lost Horizon is my favorite song of them. Bobby Van's Question Me An Answer was so good with his great dance sequence. I love the soundtrack.
Great memories. I was 12 years old when my parents took me to the movies and watched this movie, and I remember liking it a lot. Great songs, and a cast of so many stars that are no longer with us.
A brilliant video. The songs from this film are works of genius. It was very sad when Burt and Hal went their separate ways. The magic partnership that defined 60’s popular music for me, was over.
Obrigada ❤
Also worth the price of admission alone is the DVD extra of Burt Bacharach playing demos of the songs on piano: his manic energy is contagious (he even doubles himself unpredictably on some numbers…) We need a remake of this with good writers and minimal dialogue
Although the songs in this movie did not become as popular as those of the Sound of Music, to me personally, they were just as melodious meaningful and beautiful.
Sound of Music had great music, but don't think many of those songs attempted to teach life lessons. This movie did. So many good pieces of advice in so many of the songs.
My sister and I got sent to bed as punishment for staying in the cinema and watching the film twice!!! We loved it that much!! I keep trying to buy a copy on DVD or streaming. Love the music!! Such a shame it led to the separation of a very talented writing team!!
It should be pointed out that Olivia Hussey was pregnant at the time she did that very slow and wonderful stylistic dance. She didn't say anything at the time, she wanted the gig and did an excellent dance. Still my favorite song from the film.
As a huge Burt Bacharach fan, i was very disappointed that the collaboration between Burt and Hal ended after this disaster. The songs from the movie are great, but the effort that Burt had to put in to the proces were exhausting. This is what Burt once said in an interview. The time and training of every song was Burt given some hard times. Burt is a perfectionist in every way when it becomes his compostions. Hal delivered the (great) lyrics and the rest was up to Burt. Once again, it is a pity that this whole project ended the triangle marriage between Burt, Hal and Dionne! Burt and Hal, thank you so much for all the great songs that the two of you have written together! R.I.P.!
I like the spirit of what this film is trying to do because I really am intrigued by the idea or ideal of Shangra La. Who among us wouldn't want to go to a Shangra La if such a place existed? Even though it wasn't executed perfectly in many places....I still like it. A flawed masterpiece this is.
I think if you have seen the original Ronald Coleman film and understand the spirit and heart of the story this musical builds on that sense of love for something we all aspire to.

This musical was a product of its time. Sadly, compared to other film musicals of the early 1970's (like "Cabaret"), it seemed hopelessly naive and bit sappy. At least that's how the NY critics framed it, which caused the film industry to deep-six other musicals unless there was built-in box office appeal. Musical films were considered such box office poison, that it wasn't until "Grease" much later in the decade, that there was a hoped-for revival of the genre. But "Xanadu" killed that. Bacharach and David produced a noble attempt to tell this story with song. It would have been a much bigger hit a decade earlier.

Here's my take on the film. I first heard of the film from reading a terrible review in the book "The Best, Worst and Most Unusual Hollywood Musicals". Decades later, when I finally saw this version (after having seen the 1937 version, which is terribly wordy), I was impressed, although a few scenes escaped my applause. The lyrics to "Question Me An Answer" are amateurish, and I could never really stand Bobby Van. The airplane crash, most likely, would have injured everyone, but all are unscathed. How did Chang know of the airplane flight, which brought the visitors out of harm's way, and how did he contact the pilot/hijacker to tell him to fly the plane to Shangri-La? The choreography in the library scene is awkward (up and over the action, and in back of a table??) The film has its flaws (because Hilton's story can not conceivably be filmed), but when it works, it is magical. Had the film been produced ten years earlier, maybe it would have been widely appreciated, but the timing, perhaps, was wrong. As it stands, viewers should take their favorite moments from the film and judge it from that angle.

Awesome songs and music: why not cut away most ALL of the backstory, wartime stuff, talky chapters… we don’t need all the explication and rationalization… what a perfect 1hr movie! They wake up in shangrila, just go from there, then no backstory… ahhh
Do you still sing Diane? Have you written your own songs? I am so intrigued by your story! I love all of the songs from Lost Horizon and can't seem to stop listening to them. You have a wonderful voice!
Whereas the film was a big disappointment the soundtrack is wonderful with some lovely positive lyrics.... I was just 13 when this was made and brings back many memories of childhood and schoolboy crushes over female teaching staff and other "out of my league" female aquaitances.... Oh happy, simple times....
It IS very likely, that, because of TSOM that this film exists. Because the former was such a runaway smash hit, the thinking at that time, in Hollywood, was that big budget musicals were back in vogue. But I guess they were wrong, since big budget musicals like Doctor Doolittle, Star!, and Camelot, also performed below expectations.
This is the first time I've seen the Fertility Dance and the brief reprise of Living Together. Growing Together. Now If I were to buy the DVD or Blu Ray, would I be getting this "complete version/ My hope is that 2nd reprise of LTGT Duet between Sally Kellerman and George Kennedy turns up. I mean the audio portion had been uploaded, so hopefully the visuals will be found eventually.
I'd forgotten about the go-go boys in the orange loincloths! (Talk about share the joy.) For the film's upcoming 50th anniversary, there should be a big, splashy theatrical re-release as if it had been the biggest box office bonanza of its time and a deathless classic. I've heard of screenings in recent years where these numbers got quite earnest applause. Take that, "In the Heights," "La La Land," and the remake of "West Side Story"!
You have got to be kidding. The music, lyrics, singing, and dancing in this attempt of a musical have all been panned for decades. It is truly laughable. Name one song from this musical that the average person knows and can sing. And the recent musicals you mentioned at least were not dubbed in the songs.
Whilst the film was not so hot, I do think the songs were excellent. The film is in my opinion unfairly maligned, there have been far worse films. My sister loves the songs too and I gave her my copy of the CD only to find that a replacement was either unavailable or at $100 - doh.
This is a cool place to sing about circles and cycles and questions, and things which are good to sing and think about. :) But it's a horrible place for women to live. Based on the plot line and what the men living there say to the men who have just arrived, once grown, women are given zero free will and they have to go marry whichever man that wants them. If another man wants them after awhile, they are required to leave the first man and go with the second man, to marry the second man, so there is no fighting. So it's essentially a slave condition for the women who have their free will taken from them as they get passed around from man to man to man, and have children by way of non-consensual sex (rape) since they did not consent to the marriage or the sex, and then the teacher teaches all these children/brainwashes them that this sort of way to love each other is normal. If they find a man they want to be with monogamously for life and try to leave the compound as one girl did, they die (in a fantasy way through sudden old age). So basically it's a cult and this is sexual slavery. Just thought you ought to know.
If you are a nitrogen-based (vs carbon) creature you would think/act differently. If you have more/less than normal number of limbs, body parts in the "wrong" places, you would think/act differently. You are judging based on what you're used to or programmed to. And lastly, you think you are living in a better world imperfect but trying to be otherwise (as if democracy/capitalism is perfect). They are living together in a closed environment/system that sustains them, long-lived & almost immortal. And to think that most wanted to live forever.
Oh my, what does Ba'ku mean? Or this: " It will be completed the 13th b'ak'tun. It is 4 Ajaw 3 k'ank'in and it will happen, a 'seeing'. It is the display of B'olon-Yokte in a Great investiture." DO YOU KNOW THE TRANSLATION? Its Mayan and ancient foretelling of THE END.
The "Fertility Dance", with the muscle men dancing in their orange loin cloths, was cut from the film after the hysterical laughter it evoked among preview audiences. I think they should have kept it in, it was the most entertaining part of this laughably awful movie!

@@dianalee3059beautiful beautiful singing! My kids and I used to listen to these and sing along on long car trips! What great memories… thank you for such beautiful music!
The problem with the score for this film is that it’s totally wrong for the other worldy type setting. The film needed a Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration and what they got was Bacharach and David. Now there’s nothing wrong with Bacharach and David but their music was too pop to suit this production. Also the choreography was poor, surprisingly Hermes Pan was responsible for it. Pan had a great career but he was past his best at this point and he didn’t have a Fred Astaire to work with. This might not have completely awful if it had not been a musical.
The film is an overproduced mess and doesn't work - with the exception of Bobby Van, they cast actors who couldn't sing or dance, and the whole movie seems manufactured, which it was. But presented like this, it really had some fun songs. It's a shame they were lost in a subpar movie.
The younger Bobby Van was highlighted in That's Entertainment, Part 2 where he performed the delightful hopping dance from Small Town Girl. I'm so glad that he had a chance to shine in that film retrospective. In 2014 Hugh Jackman creates his own version of the dance for the opening of the Tony Awards that he hosted. He even briefly salutes a TV monitor that was screening Van's dance as he hops by.
I’ve never heard of this movie until today when I saw it on the list of the worst movie musicals ever. I couldn’t believe it because Bacharach music makes even B movies, like The Blob good, but the first two song started really weak. Not the level that other works of him reach.
@@luca47it Hi. Not everyone has to share YOUR opinion. Not a lot of people liked this film. So just shut up about it and accept that some will see this as trash. Grow up.
Never saw this movie simply because I saw no need for a musical based on the novel and the quintessential 1937 film is more than enough justification for not remaking the original in any way. I just happened upon this music video and find it truly sophomoric, asinine and pathetic. Watch at your own peril.
I know, it's horrible, but a few years ago I would have said there was no reason for a remake of A Star is Born; I can't believe how good the remake is!

Do you still sing Diane? Have you written your own songs? I am so intrigued by your story! I love all of the songs from Lost Horizon and can't seem to stop listening to them. You have a wonderful voice!
Amo esse filme.
The poorman's Sound Of Music...
It IS very likely, that, because of TSOM that this film exists. Because the former was such a runaway smash hit, the thinking at that time, in Hollywood, was that big budget musicals were back in vogue. But I guess they were wrong, since big budget
musicals like Doctor Doolittle, Star!, and Camelot, also performed below expectations.
Too bad this cannot be purchased...
子供の頃の体験、今に繋がる。
Loved salt killer man in mash the movie and this lost horizon
As Bette Midler said at the time; "I never miss a Liv Ullman musical!" 🤨
good for her. I never miss a George Kennedy musical.
@@CliffordXHA1 He did Airport so it was an easy paycheck for him
Ludicrously hilarious.
日本でDVDもブルーレイも発売されていないのは何故か不思議に思っていた。最後のオリビアハッシーのシーンなのかな。
Whilst the film was not so hot, I do think the songs were excellent. The film is in my opinion unfairly maligned, there have been far worse films. My sister loves the songs too and I gave her my copy of the CD only to find that a replacement was either unavailable or at $100 - doh.
Theres a copy on Amazon on the original Razor and Tie label for
This is a cool place to sing about circles and cycles and questions, and things which are good to sing and think about.
Zzzzzzzzzzz sorry did you say something?
Not seeing the problem here.
Ba'Ku Village anyone? ;)
Where can I get the original soundtrack?

This is some pungent cheese!
The "Fertility Dance", with the muscle men dancing in their orange loin cloths, was cut from the film after the hysterical laughter it evoked among preview audiences. I think they should have kept it in, it was the most entertaining part of this laughably awful movie!
Que onda con SHANGRI LA EXISTE O NO? SERÍA PADRISIMO ENCONTRAR TAN LINDO HORIZONTE. ANTES PERDIDO HOY ENCONTRADO.TODO UN PARAÍSO PERDIDO PARA LA ETERNIDAD
it was so much a product of the hippy dippy era.
These songs seem to made for Saturday morning kids TV show.
4:50 wonder if that's Marni Nixson dubbing her
No. I’m Diana Lee and I did the singing for Liv Ullman. I also ghost voiced Samantha Eggar in Dr. Dolittle and Charlie’s mother in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
@@dianalee3059 Your voice is beautiful. Thank you for your talent.
@@dianalee3059beautiful beautiful singing! My kids and I used to listen to these and sing along on long car trips! What great memories… thank you for such beautiful music!
Sally
I like it! The lyrics have some messages! That third song is a bit crap!
Quando vejo essas coisas, eu lembro de um ditado russo que diz: "Лула вор, ему место в тюрьме"
Also, the cast - as singers - were weak though some, like Sally Kellerman, turned that to a real strength.
You know this is really bad when this makes Grease 2 look good.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The film is an overproduced mess and doesn't work - with the exception of Bobby Van, they cast actors who couldn't sing or dance, and the whole movie seems manufactured, which it was. But presented like this, it really had some fun songs. It's a shame they were lost in a subpar movie.
It is not a subpar movie and the songs are not fun, are beautiful. Bacharach and David made a great job.
I think GOD took it and timecapsuled it. That's why it bombed! He wants it all to Himself. That's how I see it. ;) IT'S PERFECT!!
I disagree with Jim.
Bobby Van ruined dancing in films forever! I watched it so you don't have to.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Question me an Answer" is one of the best songs of this soundtrack.
Bobby had more talent in his little finger than you have period Freddy boy
Bobby Vans voice so powerful and clean. Pity he he failed to be the top singer he deserved during his time
The younger Bobby Van was highlighted in That's Entertainment, Part 2 where he performed the delightful hopping dance from Small Town Girl.
This is like a disaster film for music lovers. Bad songs, bad dancing and the worst lip syncing ever. It's truly horrible on all levels.
I don't know what film have you seen...
@@luca47it Hi. Not everyone has to share YOUR opinion. Not a lot of people liked this film. So just shut up about it and accept that some will see this as trash. Grow up.
@@SYFYGUY1 Have a look at the comments below: most people love the songs in this movie. So you shut up.
So...you must be better than Burt Bacharach.I seriously doubt it🤮
@@catherinecatuncan1913 Well said!
dreadful. uniquely dreadful.
The only thing dreadful here is you and your cynical negativity.
Never saw this movie simply because I saw no need for a musical based on the novel and the quintessential 1937 film is more than enough justification for not remaking the original in any way. I just happened upon this music video and find it truly sophomoric, asinine and pathetic. Watch at your own peril.
What a stupid idea...
I know, it's horrible, but a few years ago I would have said there was no reason for a remake of A Star is Born; I can't believe how good the remake is!
Worst musical ever. I watched it in college and it became a cult classic there for how laughable it was.
I don't believe you ever saw it.
