The Moulin Rouge film did the Elephant Medley better IMO. The film very deliberately has them singing it as a sort of question and answer, with them alternating lines. He’s the optimist, she’s the realist.
i think it’s also because many movie musicals cast celebrities instead of broadway talent but there’s not much reason to do that with kids cause most child actors aren’t well known or at least won’t put any more viewership on the project so they can actually cast the most talented people for the roles
@HerHollyness and the chemistry between Ewan and Nicole is straight up nuclear. Same for ONJ and Travolta in Grease, they're iconic. The movie version of Mean Girls Musical tried to rein Renee Rapp in too much and cast an Aaron who couldn't sing, so it wasn't a spicy duet anymore.
Everyone talking about the Matilda Kids (which rightfully so as they are so talented) but you guys are forgetting about the School of Rock Kids!!! They are unbelievable. They were singing, dancing, and playing an instrument on freaking Broadway
I know, right? It's a priority to make sure that if School of Rock gets either film remake or Broadway/West End revival, the kids MUST know how to play their instruments, no pre-recorded track.
I saw them in theaters and I love the original because of Jack Black and learning after that these kids were actually playing the instruments live was honestly really impressive. I sat on the side and having the parents right next to where we sat was honestly really cool. And knowing that they made a musical from an already made movie that I grew up on was also impressive with some of the songs and how they created from the scene it was in
Loved the cinematography and effect “Someone gets hurt” BUT soon as i realized Aaron isnt gonna sing along with Regina. i lowkey got upset cause Aarons vocals add so much to it.
...how...do you choose someone that can't sing for a musical?... It's practically like the little mermaid live action with Erick (but they used SO MUCH auto tone). But here Aron does NOTHING. Really, I don't see the charisma or kindness he showed in the original, or even the appearance (no offense. But being honest it feels like that. And I know I'm not the only one who thinks it) for being with Regina I think, considering Aron in the original movie that I think was in fact good looking.
Honestly Renee is way too gorgeous beside him and she looks too old for him 😂 he looks like a child next to her it’s insane. Him not singing and just staring silently makes this like 10x worse

i totally agree, i love that that they made the songs kind of like dream sequences to lean into the fantastical and reality bending aspect of musical theatre, i feel like losing that element is where a lot of musical movies fail
One difference I noticed, and I don't know if other stage productions do this, the movie always lights Katalin(hunyak) in white because she's innocent. Its a nice touch
All I know about cell block tango is how absolutely annoying it is to Learn the music as ensemble because all the different parts in it I know me and the rest of the ensemble kept accidentally singing Velma’s part because we keep forgetting that she has a part alone at the beginning of the song great song tho
SAME! i wanted to be a dancer and i love cats, so we were like 'perfect front row let's go🎉' only for the actors to all want to come and be a cat in front of the cute little kid, which was terrifying
I saw it in London was I was around 7 too and the guy who plays mistopholies (can’t spell the name) in the 1998 dvd version actually winked at me. Then about 10-15 years later I got to shake his hand at a local theater I used to perform in
Some of these were so nice and some of them had physically painful movies in comparison. Really shows how movie musicals can work u just gotta like. Care
@@Def.Not.Scarlett. i feel like only fans of DEH didnt like the movie, i showed it to a ton of ppl who weren't familiar with the musical and they all had tears in their eyes by the end.
I recently watched the Mean Girls musical film, and it was fine, I wish they had added more of the songs in it, but I will say Renee Rapp 👀 holy cow her movie version of Someone Gets Hurt was wild!
I just wish that they casted some people who could actually sing like Chris (Aaron) isn’t a singer so they completely got rid of the songs that he sings in the show
2; Tracie Thoms got the role of Joanne on Broadway AFTER getting the film role. She had been trying to get the broadway role for awhile but kept getting turned down. It's something that she talks about in interviews with a fair bit of humor.
Ben shouldn't have been cast in the role, but I understand what you mean and I agree, it's really good when they bring actors who have done the play before
Oh 100% that huge breath at the end is rough. Still though hard as it is, it has nothing on a New Argentina, my god is that song ridiculously hard to sing. I can get all the notes but it's just hard. I've got a voice on the higher side, almost soprano of mezzo soprano though so I can nearly everything in Phantom and also sing Eponine (I can't do Fantine though, that's too low). I figured out Evita sat in a really comfortable range for me recently, even with the high belts, it's fairly easy to get to it's just the starting sound of some of the words, breath and repetion all combined which makes it so hard. It's also just an awkward belt, it's mixed voice but so close to moving into head.
@@bethanbaker7066 I can do Christine, Eponine, and Fantine (I worked really hard to get those low notes) and yeah, New Argentina is not easy. It's quite the workout!
@@overcomingobstaclescreates1695I wish I had that sort of range. The fact that you can do both Fantine and Christine is so impressive. If I worked for Fantine I might be able to get it but it's definitely one of those, depends on the day song. Because sometimes I sound like I'm trying to do a vocal fry on night or apart.
The two different versions of Santa Fe are particularly interesting to me because of the lyrics and the portrayal of Jack are both pretty different. Jack in the new version of the musical is just another average newspaper selling boy who’s a talented artist, while in the original movie he’s a cowboy who feels out of place in an urban place such as New York. Not to mention, the lyrics are slightly different in the original version, where he sounds more, desperate, you could say? I still wonder why they had to change up Jack’s character so much, the whole cowboy complex would better fit his dream to go to Santa Fe, at least in my opinion. Also, sorry if my English is bad, not my native language. Great video!
totally agree. i would also add, they serve totally different narrative purposes. The movie version is a beginning of the show "I want" song, while in the Broadway it is the power ballad Act I closer. Just so hard to compare lol
For the most part, they’re all pretty solid adaptations. There seems to be a sigma with watching the movie version of a show rather than their stage counterpart but not everyone has the means to see a live show (or get their hands on a slime tutorial lol) so seeing the movie may be the best and/or only option. I haven’t seen all these shows or movies but aside from Les Mis, Evan Hansen, and of course Cats lol, they all seem to be on par with, if not better than the originals
If they don't cut out important character building songs it SHOULD be fine in most cases. Yknow.. if it is a true adaptation and doesn't just change characters established over the span of 20 years and sloppily tries to make characters Shein versions of themselves. I'm disappointed in Mean Girls, can you tell?
Finally a reasonable opinion! Ppl criticize all movie adaptations so much! of course its gonna be different from the stage version but thats kind of the whole point... I completely agree with you (i just finished les mis and i lowkey feel like it was one of the best movies ive watched)
One thing this really highlights is the ability of movies to expand the scope of a song in terms of number of people or the setting/scenery, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
The Chicago movie is straight up unbeatable and I say this as a massive broadway fan. Catherine Zeta Jones mothered the mother as Velma and don't get me STARTED ON QUEEN LATIFAH, UNBEATABLE UNSTOPPABLE LEGEND ICON QUEEN MOTHER
as a hardcore moulin rouge fan since birth, the musical casts do it so well every time, but nothing can beat the movie (ewan mcgregor and nicole kidman like come onnnnn) for me
I admit, I haven’t had the chance to see the stage show so this is based purely on clips I’ve watched vs watching the movie: I feel like the Elephant Love Medley in the movie works better for me because it feels more earnest/sincere, particularly on Christian’s part. With the show, it feels like they stuffed a lot more songs and comedic bits into it just to be funny/relevant/ wink at the audience with insert popular song here. With the film Christian is lighthearted sure but he means every word.
It’s interesting how this video is a mix of musicals that originally started on stage and then got movie adaptations and also movies that later got stage adaptations. And then it’s interesting how often I prefer the original to the adaption. Like the OG moulin rouge is my go to over the stage adaptation everyday. And grease the movie is 10x more entertaining than the stage version (I don’t actually know if the movie came first, that’s just what I’ve always assumed).
And the song from Grease - you’re the one that I want, was written for the movie, so that song shouldn’t be in the musical version, unless it’s a film adaptation. I think all the other songs chosen were from the stage show first.
@@julian2grandeYh some of them are musicals that came first but are performances of it from after, I’m guessing it’s because video recordings of some of them weren’t very easy to find or just the creator’s personal preference of which were their favourite stage performances
the editing is simple but its so good. the transitions between songs are so smooth and you chose the best parts of every song without cutting them off at an awkward part
I’m still so sad about dear evan hansen It could’ve been good but literally everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong (And that full coverage foundation with no blush hurts me)
it wasnt bad... ben platt looked weird sure, but ive watched the movie with a ton of people who weren't familiar with the musical a couple of months ago, and not one had a dry eye at the end. It still delivers the point of the musical pretty well id say. I honestly preferred some of the choices they made, like the development of alana's character, how evan confessed what he did to everyone instead of only the family, and how he told his mom what really happened to his arm at the end, which he weirdly didnt do in the stage version. There are some obvious flaws but it really isnt as bad as people make it seem like it is
You know what, In the Heights and West Side Story 2021 were extremely well adapted musicals in terms of direction. I liked the Mean Girls music video approach and love what they did in Chicago and Tick Tick Boom (though it wouldn't work eith every musical) but movie musicals can be sooo good when done literally too. You just need. Good directing.
I think Andrew Garfield did a good job, but it's not his fault that I saw Raul Esparza first; very rarely can I see someone in a role after I've seen Raul in it
Honestly the movie version of Tick Tick Boom ATE! It’s not very often that I can watch a movie musical version of something and love it just as much as the original

I love seeing musicals on stage, but there’s no denying the fact that film is a medium that allows you to get up close and personal with the performer, which makes it much more powerful than sitting farther away in a theatre audience.
Yes this is true in terms of physically being closer to them and getting better visuals, but on broadway you get to watch them perform LIVE and in my opinion, thats a much more personal experience. You can hear their little breaths between the lyrics of a song, watch them move and step and touch before your eyes. It's not digitally manipulated, visually or sonically, and i think that's really special. It's real and it's right in front of you and it's constantly changing and it doesn't stop for 2.5 hours. It is HERE and NOW, and once it's gone, it's gone. Everyone in that room is actively living it together, and that's so magical. What could be more personal than that?
I mean anything compared to Ramin and Sierra is going to come up short...and I'm in the "Gerard Butler did fine" camp. You won't ever hear me say he's the best, but I've always enjoyed the movie adaptation. But 1000% is Ramin my favorite Phantom. Always sends chills down my spine and while LND is trash, my heart wrenches every time I listen to his "Til I hear you sing once more."
Yea I agree. I mean, in some ways the movie did do better than the musical, but not in vocals. The vocals with Ramin and Sierra is just crazy stunning.
I think Regina being an angel makes sense , especially since the idea was that they were trying to make this more like how Gen Z would see or portrayed the mean girls which were more into the Victoria’s Secret model rather than a playboy bunny, unless if cosplayers
It’s weird to see the difference in DEH because it’s both Ben Platt and it’s what, 5-10 years later? It really shows a change in tonality over the course of a stars career.
Hands down the Les Mis musical outshines the movie musical adaption in nearly every way. I have some things I like about it, but I would definitely choose the broadway musical every time.
overall yes, but there are some things i prefer what the movie did! for example, i love how they put i dreamed a dream AFTER lovely ladies instead of right before it, that way fantine sings her most gut wrenching song at her lowest point
I liked that the movie added more things from the book, like ValJean and Cosette living in the convent for many years. I wish they would added Gavroche and Eponine were brother and sister. But my ears bleed every time I hear Hugh Jackman sing Bring Him Home, and I like Hugh Jackman.
I saw Matilda on Broadway (with Allison Luff as Miss Honey) and spent the whole time shifting through goosebumps, laughing and crying the whole show. The movie mostly gave me goosebumps, but got some laughs and tears as well. What really got me was how they locked into the cinematic choices they could make, like Matilda's story. Changing the medium from a sculpture to a painting- both being beautiful in their own ways.
That video of the Cats stage performance was the closest we got to a movie in that time period, but it was not complete. Still it was watched on repeat for me lol. I…had a hard time with the film 😅
My God, I LOVE 'Chicago the Musical' but the 2002 movie will always have the most admiration in my heart, always!! This year my high school did 'Chicago the Musical: Teen Edition' and I was Roxie Hart, I have never felt more alive in my life!! ❤ But I would always pick the movie, any day! 🤭 Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, (etc), are just amazing! I dream to be just like them in the future. ❤🇦🇺
I’m pretty sure this just proved LMM did it best. Stage or screen, LMM wins! Of course when compared to the incomparable Chita… I think that’s a tie. 😂 Glad you included both film versions of west side just to confirm that both LMM & Chita are GOATs.
That's Rita. Chita did the original Broadway version, Rita did (and won an Oscar for) the original film version. Chita also did the original Broadway Chicago.
One of the first books of music I got when I started singing lessons had this song from a Disney movie in it that I had never heard of, but I fell in love with it instantly: "When I dream, on my own, I'm alone but I ain't lonely. For a dreamer nights the only time of day." I love the original lyrics of Santa Fe, and as much as I love Jeremy Jordan, I'll never love his version as much because the original lyrics were just so much more powerful. I love that song to this day.
I was going to say I wish that Broadway would do more movies in Shrek, the musical style, which is just a nice recording of the stage, but I also realized through this video how many music movies I like and a lot I don't. I think how I first watched can effect that opinion
unpopular opinion: In the Heights the movie is better than In the Heights the play, solely because the Vanessa-Usnavi mid story drama fits WAY better than the Nina-Benny one. Benny has no reason to blame Nina for being fired, and her reaction to his reaction wasn't good either, he was always supportive and she was not even a bit understansing that he was upset. the whole clube fight scene just makes both the characters a little less likable. Vanessa and Usnavi ARE the main couple and it just makes sense that they would have a mid story fight. plus Vanessa singing "I'm gonna find me way home without you" after the iconic "You abandoned me" "don't make me laugh" lines is just chefs kiss.
I can see why you think that but I am still extremely bitter that they killed off Nina's mom and thus, a major bit of Nina's story. Yes, Nina and Benny's stories are flawed but, first, they bring some of the best songs of the musical imo (Inutil but also Enough which is a masterpiece), it feeds into the idea of a lively neighbourhood in which a thousand things happen at the same time (and not just Usnavi's life) and it adds depth to their characters. In the musical, Camila is the heart of her family, not because she's a saint or the idealized dead wife but because she's infuriated with both her daughter and her husband's behaviour, and it's her anger that allows Nina and Mr Rosario to take a step back and ultimately make up. You lose all of this in the movie + most of Bennie's character as well. It makes total sense that some parts of the story have to be cut in order for the movie to work but the musical will always be superior to me
@@-nina-8498Exactly they got rid of some detrimental songs (some of my personal favorites) so although the choreography was so good in the movie, I really feel like they could have kept in some of the other songs while also making sure both couples had their on screen moments and stuff.
I can’t decide between newsies movie or broadway. Broadway has amazing singing but I grew up with the movie and it’s kinda rooted in my soul 😅 love them both either way ❤
i better not see anyone dissing the “matilda the musical” broadway cast. that cast is 95% kids and they put 110% into every show they did. however i will not take away the movies revolting children i might even have to say its better
I absolutely loved the Matilda the musical and I think they casted perfectly and acted spectacularly, Alisha really did make a great Matilda when she was 12 and I think she could still do really good even now she’s 14 Edit: also the fact we’ve had movies with the original broadway makes it better like Rapp carried mean girls and Platt was just perfect at replicating the songs he did on broadway in a movie
i think one of the things that make stage musicals work is even if the story is based in reality e.g. grease is 2 teenagers in high school, u can tell it’s a production and it’s fantastical like there’s a sense of surrealism like you know it’s still suspended from reality and i think that’s where some musical adaptations fall flat because they want to emphasise more on realism than surrealism which makes it not work. like imo the better movie musical adaptations are the ones that keep this sense of flamboyancy in terms of how the story is presented on screen
Woah - I love the Little Shop of Horrors film and have for a long time, but that Off Broadway Revival clip just about knocked my head off! Wow! I'm off to go look for more of Joy Woods, she's a fabulous singer
Such an amazing video with an incredible list of shows and movies! Thank you for putting this together. So many musicals that I didn't know had movies that now I have such a list to compile and watch for when I'm vegging at home! 🙂 Not quite sure which way I lean though as I have several thoughts on it. 1. It's hard to compare these movies to the Broadway shows when the same actors aren't used. Each actor/actress brings different qualities and special nuances to the roles that make each show different! 2. So many of the Rogers and Hammerstein shows weren't shown in this list and a majority of them that were turned into films were made special by the fact that they were on Broadway first and so the movies made it difficult to choose who was better (i.e. who's better as Lady Guinevere in Camelot - Julie Andrews in Broadway, or Vanessa Redgrave in the movie). 3. How many of these Broadway shows were movies first though too (a.k.a. School of Rock, Mean Girls, Mamma Mia, etc.) 4. What about animated films to Broadway plays (i.e. Lion King, Aladdin, etc.), although I'm sure this could be a topic for another video. 5. Last but not least, certain actors/actresses made shows famous. Fanny Brice in Funny Girl is most closely recognized as being played by Barbra Streisand, even though Lea Michele did it on Broadway in the style of Barbra. The same is true for Robert Preston as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man or Yul Brynner as the King of Siam in The King and I, or Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. These shows whether done on Broadway or Film tend to have a fan base that is based off of the actor/actress, so it's really hard to choose the production as being better/worse than the other. As I said, this was a fantastic video and I thank you so much for putting this together! Just my two cents (or rather $0.10) since this is rather long winded!
The one thing I will always say is both Phantom of the Opera versions had a great Christine. Emmy Rossum was was 17 playing her in the movie, I love her voice and Sierra? Just phenomenal as always. Gerard Butler’s phantom always held a soft spot in my heart
I liked that you included both movie versions of WSS! It's so interesting to see the different interpretations. Some are better, some are not. Even different stage performances or different movie versions have different takes. It's fun to compare them.
I prefer Emmy Rossum as Christine because she belts but doesn't have the same operatic embellishments, I think it really highlights the contrast between her and Carlotta.
It’s Jeremy Jordan! He’s amazing in allll the things! TV, Broadway (currently he’s Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby), Lucifer in Hazbin Hotel, Light in Deathnote the Musical… his voice is magical 😍
Wasn't "You're the one that I want" written for the movie? In the original 1972 production it's "All Choked Up" that Danny and Sandy sing at the transformation scene.
I truly wonder what the movie version of Cats must have felt like to non-musical theatre people, cause if it was horrifying for us I can't even begin to imagine the experience of someone who isn't even able to stomach a regular production of Cats
honestly, Suddenly Seymour in both stage and movie are equally good. The stage one was very nice with great harmonies and chemistry between the two actors and the urchins supporting them. As for the film version, its just as grand with the beautiful connection and support with the urchins, not to mention Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene both work well as Seymour and Audrey, very believable.
The key that Mark is singing in for the live recording is pretty interesting. I wonder if it was an artistic choice to reflect musically the lyrics of being "out of the mainstream". Conceptually I get it, but it took me a few listens to come up with that. I feel like if I saw this live it would've taken me out of the moment
Renee Rapps voice is crazy. I really wish they had done a musical movie adaptation of the original movie, and not a movie adaptation of the musical, which was an adaptation of the original movie - which was an adaptation of a book lol. It didn't flow well and was way too fast paced

Cell Block Tango is already an amazing number, but the movie made it even better. I feel like Chicago is one of the best movie adaptation.
i totally agree, i love that that they made the songs kind of like dream sequences to lean into the fantastical and reality bending aspect of musical theatre, i feel like losing that element is where a lot of musical movies fail
One difference I noticed, and I don't know if other stage productions do this, the movie always lights Katalin(hunyak) in white because she's innocent. Its a nice touch
@KSan357 if I remember too, she pulls put a white handkerchief from the male victim, instead of a red one, signifying her innocence.
Fr I LOVEEE Chicago because it’s produced so well!!!
All I know about cell block tango is how absolutely annoying it is to Learn the music as ensemble because all the different parts in it I know me and the rest of the ensemble kept accidentally singing Velma’s part because we keep forgetting that she has a part alone at the beginning of the song great song tho
When I was 7 my mum took me to see cats and “skimbleshanks” sat next to me. I think I am traumatised. Cats still scare me to this day.
SAME! i wanted to be a dancer and i love cats, so we were like 'perfect front row let's go🎉' only for the actors to all want to come and be a cat in front of the cute little kid, which was terrifying
Why was it scary?
Who is “Skimbleshanks?”
@katielavigne2479 He's the cat of the railway train. He's known "Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat".
Care
Exactly
Cats 😂
(Mean girls, cats, DEH, etc.)
Cats
@@Def.Not.Scarlett. i feel like only fans of DEH didnt like the movie, i showed it to a ton of ppl who weren't familiar with the musical and they all had tears in their eyes by the end.
I recently watched the Mean Girls musical film, and it was fine, I wish they had added more of the songs in it, but I will say Renee Rapp 👀 holy cow her movie version of Someone Gets Hurt was wild!
and Avantika's 'Sexy' was funny as hell
for her broadway performance or movie performance?
Yes@@xae...
her songs were the best, but Cady songs... oh lord! 🙃
I just wish that they casted some people who could actually sing like Chris (Aaron) isn’t a singer so they completely got rid of the songs that he sings in the show
The cool thing about Rent was that all but 1 of the movie actors were also the original Broadway actors.
2; Tracie Thoms got the role of Joanne on Broadway AFTER getting the film role. She had been trying to get the broadway role for awhile but kept getting turned down. It's something that she talks about in interviews with a fair bit of humor.
@@nothobbesmufc949Yeah she's both Joanne in the Filmed Live on Broadway version AND the movie version!
I love when the people that played a character in Broadway plays them in the movie adaptation (Renee rapp, Ben platt, etc.)
yeah everyone loved when ben platt came back for the movie 😂😂😂
@@save_banditWdym he totally looked like a high school student lol
Barbra too
Ben shouldn't have been cast in the role, but I understand what you mean and I agree, it's really good when they bring actors who have done the play before
It’s just crazy that these thirty year olds are so set on playing teenagers. Cringe.
I like that you included both movie adaptations of West Side Story
That performance of Suddenly Seymour for the Broadway side is soooo good
It really is, but that movie version will always be top for me just because of her transition from meek to full throttle 😊
absolutely. Joy Woods plays Audrey so well and I really wish she had been Audrey in the 2019 cast recording. it would have made it so much better imo
YES! the movie version is almost equal but ellen greene’s voice and seymour’s nonchalance stop me from giving the movie version a 10.
wishing you were somehow here again gives me SO MANY GOOSEBUMPS. it’s such a vocal cord killer but jesus Christ
@@overcomingobstaclescreates1695 SAME! And yeah, it is difficult.
Sarah Brightman , the original Christine does this song justice
In The Heights is my favorite movie musical ever!! It is also one of my favorite movies of all time! It’s the best thing ever.
I love it so much too ❤❤❤😊
The two different versions of Santa Fe are particularly interesting to me because of the lyrics and the portrayal of Jack are both pretty different.
@@marystombaugh2282 ah but on Broadway it's the opening I want song, and then it's the big Act 1 finisher!
That's fair tho let's not fail to mention just how incredible Jeremy Jordan's performance is
For the most part, they’re all pretty solid adaptations.
@@loli_cvnt5622 Yeah them cutting out half of Meet the Plastics is wild along with a lot of other weird decisions
The Phantom of the Opera's title character was a complete fail
Finally a reasonable opinion! Ppl criticize all movie adaptations so much! of course its gonna be different from the stage version but thats kind of the whole point... I completely agree with you (i just finished les mis and i lowkey feel like it was one of the best movies ive watched)
ok maybe some of the actors are tone deaf in Les Mis but the movie really made me love the musical 😂
The grease movie is just too iconic to ever be beaten by the stage version imo
One thing this really highlights is the ability of movies to expand the scope of a song in terms of number of people or the setting/scenery, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
The Chicago movie is straight up unbeatable and I say this as a massive broadway fan. Catherine Zeta Jones mothered the mother as Velma and don't get me STARTED ON QUEEN LATIFAH, UNBEATABLE UNSTOPPABLE LEGEND ICON QUEEN MOTHER
Agreed. I saw it on stage but that movie adaptation is one of the best.
The elephant love medley movie version feels much more dynamic to me and like it's a conversation that just happens o be sung rather than a duet
Good Lord, it constantly wows me. The kids and Matilda the musical are so fucking talented.
Love that Renee Rapp is both the musical and movie version of

as a hardcore moulin rouge fan since birth, the musical casts do it so well every time, but nothing can beat the movie (ewan mcgregor and nicole kidman like come onnnnn) for me
I admit, I haven’t had the chance to see the stage show so this is based purely on clips I’ve watched vs watching the movie: I feel like the Elephant Love Medley in the movie works better for me because it feels more earnest/sincere, particularly on Christian’s part.
With the show, it feels like they stuffed a lot more songs and comedic bits into it just to be funny/relevant/ wink at the audience with insert popular song here. With the film Christian is lighthearted sure but he means every word.
What drugs are people on to enjoy that god awful movie?
@@englishatheart what drugs are you on to NOT enjoy it?
It’s interesting how this video is a mix of musicals that originally started on stage and then got movie adaptations and also movies that later got stage adaptations.
And then it’s interesting how often I prefer the original to the adaption. Like the OG moulin rouge is my go to over the stage adaptation everyday. And grease the movie is 10x more entertaining than the stage version (I don’t actually know if the movie came first, that’s just what I’ve always assumed).
grease the musical came first except this clip is from a cast that came way after the movie
The few clips I've seen of the stage version of Moulin are just terrible compared to the OG, which I've been obsessed with since it came out in 2001.
@@julian2grande. Yep. John Travolta was in the stage version but he was one of the side kicks, not Danny.
In the Heights is such an underrated musical movie. Great performances, great cinematography, all around great film.
I love how the music of the title card for each leads into the song for each. Great touch!
This video is so well edited, props to you. The way the instrumental flows into the songs is so satisfying
Thank you :D
I’m still so sad about dear evan hansen
It could’ve been good but literally everything that could’ve gone wrong went wrong
(And that full coverage foundation with no blush hurts me)
it wasnt bad... ben platt looked weird sure, but ive watched the movie with a ton of people who weren't familiar with the musical a couple of months ago, and not one had a dry eye at the end. It still delivers the point of the musical pretty well id say. I honestly preferred some of the choices they made, like the development of alana's character, how evan confessed what he did to everyone instead of only the family, and how he told his mom what really happened to his arm at the end, which he weirdly didnt do in the stage version. There are some obvious flaws but it really isnt as bad as people make it seem like it is
The Video: Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats.

Best line in The Prom movie “look. It’s the Godspell kids”
I think Andrew Garfield did a good job, but it's not his fault that I saw Raul Esparza first; very rarely can I see someone in a role after I've seen Raul in it

What's funny is for Rent, the movie version had more original broadway cast than the theatre clip did.
I wish they didn’t cut the climax of Someone Gets Hurt, but I also love Renee’s new riff that she did.
I am not saying the Phantom of the Opera is the worst movie musical, but seeing them in comparison to Ramin and Sierra was really something 😅
I agree. This two had a great chemistry on stage
100% agree. Not the worst adaptation. But if you out anything next to Ramin and/or Sierra (much less together)…it’s not gonna come out looking good 😅
And because of Kristin's actres in the movie there is a great misudrestanding about Kristin's age
Oh man I’m still not over how good the Tick Tick Boom movie is.
The Matilda west end kids are so talented like wtf
Cats : is there
Next song : "poor little me all trapped in this fabulous show"
Remove fabulous and I think that's the perfect transition

@@user-jf1hn2kg8l Yes! That was one of the good changes! It works either way, but it put a different perspective on that moment.
I liked that the movie added more things from the book, like ValJean and Cosette living in the convent for many years. I wish they would added Gavroche and Eponine were brother and sister. But my ears bleed every time I hear Hugh Jackman sing Bring Him Home, and I like Hugh Jackman.
I actually love the stylistic choices for the movie version of Don’t Rain on My Parade
1:57 John Travolta haunts my nightmares
My God, I LOVE 'Chicago the Musical' but the 2002 movie will always have the most admiration in my heart, always!! This year my high school did 'Chicago the Musical: Teen Edition' and I was Roxie Hart, I have never felt more alive in my life!! ❤
But I would always pick the movie, any day! 🤭
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, (etc), are just amazing! I dream to be just like them in the future. ❤🇦🇺
I'm more of a 'West Side Story' girly though.. don't tell!!!! 🤭
Love this... but you forgot Fiddler on the Roof!
To name ONE
One of the first books of music I got when I started singing lessons had this song from a Disney movie in it that I had never heard of, but I fell in love with it instantly:
"When I dream, on my own, I'm alone but I ain't lonely. For a dreamer nights the only time of day."
I love the original lyrics of Santa Fe, and as much as I love Jeremy Jordan, I'll never love his version as much because the original lyrics were just so much more powerful.
Broadway has amazing singing but I grew up with the movie and it’s kinda rooted in my soul 😅 love them both either way ❤
Santa Fe is one of my favorites, I was so happy when my choir director decided to do Newsies for our school musical!

You will love it!! I got to see it twice in London back in 1990, 91 when I lived there for 14 months. 😊 it’s worth saving your money for.
i better not see anyone dissing the “matilda the musical” broadway cast. that cast is 95% kids and they put 110% into every show they did. however i will not take away the movies revolting children i might even have to say its better
I absolutely loved the Matilda the musical and I think they casted perfectly and acted spectacularly, Alisha really did make a great Matilda when she was 12 and I think she could still do really good even now she’s 14
Edit: also the fact we’ve had movies with the original broadway makes it better like Rapp carried mean girls and Platt was just perfect at replicating the songs he did on broadway in a movie
i think one of the things that make stage musicals work is even if the story is based in reality e.g. grease is 2 teenagers in high school, u can tell it’s a production and it’s fantastical like there’s a sense of surrealism like you know it’s still suspended from reality and i think that’s where some musical adaptations fall flat because they want to emphasise more on realism than surrealism which makes it not work. like imo the better movie musical adaptations are the ones that keep this sense of flamboyancy in terms of how the story is presented on screen
School of Rock, Mean Girls, Mamma Mia, etc.)
Just my two cents (or rather $0.10) since this is rather long winded!
alex brightman in school of rock is fucking amazing. the kids too god damn.. love both versions but goddamn school of rock is so good as a musician

The girl from the Mean girls broadway production also plays Regina in the movie 😊 fun to see her be able to do different interpretations

The one thing I will always say is both Phantom of the Opera versions had a great Christine. Emmy Rossum was was 17 playing her in the movie, I love her voice and Sierra? Just phenomenal as always. Gerard Butler’s phantom always held a soft spot in my heart
JERMEY JORDAN HAS MY HEARTTTT

It's so interesting to see the different interpretations. Some are better, some are not. Even different stage performances or different movie versions have different takes. It's fun to compare them.

I prefer Emmy Rossum as Christine because she belts but doesn't have the same operatic embellishments, I think it really highlights the contrast between her and Carlotta.

17:53 I’m so excited cause I’m going to see hairspray live in one month
Les mis, by far the dream cast is the best. Amazing skills, no one comes close
A part 2 should definitely have Anastasia! maybe Annie too! (It's actually hard to think of how many musicals got turned into movies haha)
Anastasia was a Fox Animation movie before it came to Broadway
sweeney todd as well im pretty sure has both
And "One Day More" is a DANCE number... fight me
Part 2 please! I loved this video.
I always loved Broadway. The music is so divine
