  • Our 1982 Series 2 RX7 is an absolute beauty to look at but it doesn't run great. We've ditched the carby, installed a new fuel tank and are now wiring it up ready to go to the dyno to see how much power it will make.

Latter I respect nothing more.A Simple incredible machine. I also owned a 1978 280Z and A 1976 260Z. So I understand the competition and rotaries are in a different class and the RX-7 as a whole are as well. Simply a incredible machine that I truly regret letting go.

  • @jameskeating6600
    @jameskeating6600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    As someone who owns and has owned RX-7s, they are much happier when you premix the fuel with 2 stroke oil. The factory system uses engine oil which can have contaminates in it, or it can just not work and quickly burn up your seals. Always premix, I'm sure anyone who knows rotarys would agree.

    • @TaAikah
      @TaAikah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with you for the most part. Though, I think the most ideal is to use one of those Richard Sohn adapters for the OMP that allows the OMP to feed off of a reservoir of two stroke oil. This way you're not using the contaminated oil that isn't designed to burn and it's getting more ideal amounts (not overmixing). That is quite a bit of fab work for the average person though.

    You've probably heard this a bunch of times, but the reason for all the Mitsubishi logos on parts is because they'll be from Mitsubishi Electric, so it's not directly parts from Mitsubishi Cars. Mitsubishi is a large Japanese conglomorate with offshoots in lots of different manufacturing segments. So this is more kind of like finding Bosch parts in your car.

    Its a good idea to get rid of the stock oil metering pump setup. It injects oil from the sump so you'll have to check oil level all the time. Also, synthetic oil is much better for rotaries given the high temps, but it apparently doesn't burn as clean as conventional oil, so no OMP is best way to go. That way you run 2 stroke oil in the fuel, which is designed to be burned and lubricate in that environment.

    With oil Injection, pre mix 2 stroke oil is better, but when you have an IDA type set up, can just set factory oil injection to about 1/2 way premenant. Make rod out of wire that attaches to oil injection pump and at other end wrap around rad hose. Getto but works! Run my 13BBP like this for 8 years now.

    If you are having trouble finding a CAS, you can do a trigger wheel setup with a hall effect sensor. Full Function Engineering makes one (look for the FC one) or you could build it yourself. Another option if you want to avoid premixing at the pump in case you loan it out could be to use an output from the Haltech to a separate premix reservoir pump. Rotary Aviation used to make an adapter to use the stock pump to do this, but they only make them for the newer rotaries now.

    You can buy kits online to add a separate 2 stroke reservoir to inject oil into the engine in place of the factory oil metering pump which uses dirty crankcase oil! Much easier than premixing as well.

    • @gregpieris4478
      @gregpieris4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From experience they don't work as well as the factory OMP as they rely on gravity feed to create head pressure. There is zero problem with injecting sump oil in a rotary if the oil is changed regularly as it should be. I have witnessed tear downs of engines running on straight LPG and OMP and the engines are perfectly clean inside. Unburnt fuel is what clogs up engines with carbon not unburnt oil.

    • @PhantomShane914
      @PhantomShane914 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregpieris4478 interesting insight thank you. The kits I've seen include a pump of sorts to help with the injection process. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with injecting crankcase oil but I don't like the idea of constantly topping up my oil and checking the level while worrying about running it low.

    • @gregpieris4478
      @gregpieris4478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PhantomShane914 the factory oil metering pump is in fact the pump, the kits you have seen just extend the keyway for the factory pump. But the feed for the pump in the factory front cover gets constant flow under pressure from the engine oil pump. With the adapters, it relies solely on gravity feed, and i was not satisfied that it actually delivered sufficient flow under all conditions compared to factory setup
