    Btw, the third vid that's set up for passenger side driving is a very common mod setup for rural mail carriers who have to drive their own vehicles on their mail routes. Usually old jeeps or other small SUVs.

    The right hand drive conversion kit is used for postal services in areas that don’t have the need for a fleet of mail trucks. A lot of places have special ordered trucks that come rhd but this is the cheaper option and it works well 4:05

    The steering wheel repositioning thing is more common than you think. In rural areas, the postal people have to use their own vehicles to deliver mail so they would do this to be able to put the letters in the mailbox that's always on one side of the road. I repaired a 16 escape with this exact setup.

    • @Midala87

    The mod at 3:50 is used in rural areas to modify vehicles for mail delivery in the US. Smaller post offices can't always maintain their own fleet of USPS vehicles, so they hire locals who are willing to use their own vehicles. To streamline the delivery process, the drivers use that mod so they can reach the mailbox without getting out of the car. You do lose the airbag, but it's still safe for the low speeds involved in delivery.

      For the same reason the German Post Office ("Bundespost") used VW Beetles with right hand steering in Germany in the 60s and 70s: so that the mail delivery person did not had to step on the street into traffic wile delivering mail. But they where VW Beetles originally built for GB export, so properly built for right hand drive at the factory. I bought such a car at a Deutsche Post auction when the cars were retired in the 80s ... for about 300 DM if I recall correctly. Not much for a properly maintained car even back in the day. Was my first car.

    @3:55 is how I deliver mail in the mountains every day. It's cheaper than buying a right side drive & importing it & it makes delivering mail to mountain communities possible since standard mail trucks (LLV's) cannot ever go off pavement... They can barely move on the pavement as it is.

    4:00 I've actually seen one of these IN USE! A lot of the USPS offices out in the sticks in the US use regular commuter vehicles modified like this so when your delivering mail the driver side is right next to the mail box which makes it easier for the driver to deliver mail.
    The more you know!

    • @randomkoreanguy
      @randomkoreanguy หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I was a kid, our mail carrier had a personal Jeep he owned modified this way, except a lot cleaner. There were no visible belts or poles, but you could clearly see the two steering wheels were linked because as one turned, so did the other. I assume it was done behind the dashboard by a professional company. I was told by other people that some Driver's Ed cars were also modified this way so that the instructor could take over if necessary from the passenger side.

      But why though? Does it matter what side drive the mail vehicle is? I'm from the UK, and the Royal Mail will park his van up on an estate, get out with the mail for that area, walk around and deliver the post and then get back in the van and move on. At what point does the side of the steering wheel come into that? The Royal Mail vans could all be LHD it doesn't impact their job at all.

      I don't feel like that'd be cause to jerry rig a swapover like that. It'd be a hell of a lot easier to just get an import that's already configured on the right side than it would be to rig all of that up to just deliver the mail. It's actually also happened in the past. The US has ordered bulk Japanese made Subaru's specifically for the USPS. So again, it could be that, but I just highly doubt it because the USPS is a federally regulated body.

    Vredestein is actually pronounced more like the way you guys pronounce "Fray". So it's like "Fray The Stein", not "Vre" as in "fre-ckle".
    In Dutch when a vowel is followed by a single consonant, the vowel in pronounced like a "long" variant. It's hard to explain... But the pronunciation for a vowel is different because of that. Like I mentioned before. It's like the "e" in freckle compared to the "a" in fray.

    16:35 is called the evrymod, used on diesels with mechanical pumps like the Volkswagen VE engines. you get a potentiometer and wire it into the plug for the fuel pump and turning the pot up tricks the pump into dumping more fuel. on a 1.9SDI you can get a bit more of a kick out of the 64HP engine haha
    don't turn it up too much though as it'll stall haha

      This is the second comment I see with this so I'm gonna ask a potentially stupid question - why would a mail carrier vehicle be any different in terms of where the steering wheel is located? I live in a country where steering wheels are on the left, no matter the vehicle so I genuinely have no clue, so I'm curious.

    So the right hand drove conversion is super popular for USPS mail carriers. Some rural routes provide their own vehicle and it needs to be right hand drive to service mail boxes.

  • @Sleeve_Did_It
    @Sleeve_Did_It ปีที่แล้ว

    3:49 - That is an actual right hand drive conversion kit, used for converting vehicles in the US for use on postal (mail) routes. This, along with importing RHD wagons and SUVs from Japan, is common with rural mail carriers. Fun Fact: From 1989 to 1999, Subaru of America built RHD Legacy wagons for use as rural mail vehicles.

  • @snowyman42
    @snowyman42 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those right hand drive conversion kits are common in the USPS. In many places rural carriers have to use their own personal vehicles to deliver mail, so the get these kits to be able to drive up to each mail box and not have to get out of the car every time they stop to deliver

  • @johno9507

    the steering wheel and pedal extensions are popular among postal workers in rural areas since they’re delivering in a normal vehicle instead of the traditional mailvan. Some drivers even gone as far as purchasing right hand drive vehicles, jeeps are being the more popular choice for RHD.

    Exhaust Can: My wife and I ran some old bikes down to the beach (couple hundred miles,about 7 hours). Mid-trip my bike's header rusted through just in front of the exhaust and I had to finish the ride trying to keep the muffler tip from scraping the ground in the curves. That night, I sent my wife to buy two beers. We drained the cans. Then we cut open the cans with sheers. Cut out the ends. Strapped them onto my exhaust and rode it home a couple hundred miles. We used Foster's Beer because it felt like the thickest can on the shelf.

    Let's stop for a moment. The car mod moving the steering wheel and pedals to the opposite side of the car is MORE COMMON than you think.
    Farmland mail carriers in the Midwest don't have government-funded mail carrier vehicles and have to resort to junkers or Craigslist rejects, and you'll see a lot of them driving while sitting on the right-side of the car (for better access of mailboxes). Most of them are crazy, and drive without such expensive modifications.

    These types of super basic right hand drive conversions are super common in the USA with mail carriers. Dedicated right hand drive vehicles have special parts compared to the left hand drive models. This way they can get common fixes easily, but still reach out the right window for the mailbox.
