  • Here is a free plug to B. Marshall Home Improvements. This is not a paid commercial. This father-son team, Ben & Ben, did a great job for me so I thought I'd give them some free advertising. They do much more than painting and serve the wider Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, MD region.
    Note: Videos are purely a hobby of mine. I do not get paid in any way.

    I painted one side of my house the OEM color as it took the brunt of weathering; chalked, peeling paint and a few dents courtesty of my kids. I power washed, sanded with 100 grit to remove the loose paint and give a tooth to the aluminum, then filled deep dents using plastic body filler and feathered it in. Using a brush and a foam roller, primed then top coated, it took 3 days to do a small section of the home by myself. It still looks good after 5 years but to say I was exhausted afterward is an understatement, leave the hard work to the pros! A very nice job, well worth the money and the correct tools make it quick work.

    Good except for pointing the pressure washer wand upwards while cleaning: Water will be driven under the siding.

      I agree with this concern, Randolf; best question. In fact, it was my main hesitation and skepticism point I discussed with Ben before agreeing to the job. As it turns out, unlike the type of high-pressure washing coupled with the water nozzle type one would do on a deck (maybe ~1500psi?) that can erode the surface of soft woods, this pressure washing equipment isn’t as severe. Still, the upward direction was my concern. But he assured me, and he was correct, that after a few days in the sun, any minor amount of water that made it into the drip holes or behind the overlaps was gone. And, after almost two years and close examination, there is still no evidence of any problem whatsoever. Absolutely no peeling or bad spots anywhere. Amazing how well it holds up and still looks new. Thanks for commenting. I agree one shouldn’t use the same pressure washing as done on a deck (nozzle type, pressure setting, and proximity to the surface). That could be trouble.

      chamsam It’s holding up extremely well. I’ve been noticing and commenting to friends that after a full year of all seasons that there isn’t so much as a single tiny blister or flake of paint anywhere. And no drips to be seen. I think a tribute to the professional spraying equipment (and of course the guys who did the job).
      I am not near the ocean. And I guess one can only go by the warranty period stated by the paint manufacturer. But whatever that is, I’d have it painted again before tearing off the siding.

      Still looks great. Not a single chip, no fading or discoloration. Like I said in the video, I was initially very skeptical but now a full believer with proof. And if you think about it, it's not painting bare aluminum. It's painting on cleaned non-glossy pre-painted aluminum of which the original factory paint is a good baked on oxidized undercoat.

  • @ClarkeLSmith
    @ClarkeLSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I watched this video, I was surprised that the wash/prep process was so "simple" - it doesn't look really all that thorough to me. Also, one coat of paint only?... How's the paint 4 years later. Also, your siding looks like vinyl siding and not aluminum, or do they make textured aluminum siding?

    • @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi
      @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's aluminum siding. Not vinyl. The wash/prep and dry was thorough. No dirt or issues. Not a spec of drip or chip anywhere. Perfect uniform adhesion, colorfast, and coverage to this day. Everything to do with the proper equipment, paint quality, and skill.

    Did the painter have to add a bonding agent (e.g., Emulsa Bond) to the paint to prevent peeling?

    • @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi
      @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No he did not. Didn’t have to add anything. And not a speck of peeling all this time. It’s likely that since the siding was so aged and the original finish was so oxidized and far from a new surface that such a bonding agent is simply not necessary. Still amazes me how new it looks today. Totally happy with it.

      Thanks for checking in, Bill. Still looks as good as when they did the job. 100% pleased. Absolutely no flaking, chipping, or anything. I suppose it's a testament to the preparation AND the quality of the paint. I think I said in the video that I was apprehensive at first but this definitely proved to me that you can paint aluminum siding. I think the difference between painting my aluminum siding vs. painting new, bare (shiny) uncoated aluminum is that the aluminum siding had the coating of the manufacturer's paint as a base. And it may have helped that that original paint coating was somewhat aged in the sun over the years. Who knows.

    Pro painting contractor here. This is done completely wrong and will peel. PDCA Textbook is crystal clear- You need to use a metal bonding primer, like KEM-BOND or PRO-CRYL. Painting directly onto metal siding without priming is a noob/DIY move. Also, almost no contractors swing by old jobs “just for the fun of it” so I highly doubt he’s been by the job to verify it’s held up haha.

    • @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi
      @videocreationsbyjohnrenzi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles G, Let me enlighten you:
      1. You're premise is completely wrong. If you noticed, this aluminum siding is not bare aluminum. If it were, then you would be correct regarding the need to use a metal bonding primer. But the fact of the matter is, the original bonding agent and baked-on factory paint was and still is intact and, better yet, aged and oxidized perfectly, i.e., not a "shiny surface", for perfectly bonding this new Super Paint.
      2. This paint job is now over 5 years old and I'm here to inform you that it has performed perfectly. Still looks factory, has not peeled or chipped so much as a speck. Has not discolored or in any way degraded. Proof for my Point #1. If you read the other comments, you would have seen that others have asked me for updates and I respond with both thumbs up.
      3. You are also incorrect regarding them coming back. This was no "DIY" job. I'm an engineer and do my research; these guys are the best in the Baltimore-Washington region. They did come back: I hired them to do other painting. I only hire the best.

      Just to clarify this for you, any paint of quality doesn't advertise the paint primer combo. Good paint covers because of the pigment and quality of chemicals in it. The more pricey generally the smaller the pigment peices are. Therefore they fill in better. The paint primer gimmick is to squeeze money from consumers that don't know.
