      This has been my experience in HS, guys my age probably didn't see me as a potential partner because I looked quite younger than my actual age and was also awkward/shy. The situation has changed now, but people still carry on making jokes about how my younger friends look more "adult" than I do. 🙄
      I'm quite a late-bloomer in all areas of "adult life", I don't know if it's due to me looking younger than my age, but I definitely think it's correlated and has shaped my experience of the world in some ways

      YES!!! It doesn't help that when I am feeling comfortable I have a naturally bubbly, playful personality. Right now I am in a situation where a young male co-worker started flirting with me...he is about 17 years my junior! At 37, I am now seriously beginning to wonder if my ability to marry is going to hinge on how comfortable I am with robbing the cradle. And, if I do meet someone my age, how comfortable are they going to be with the appearance of robbing the cradle themselves? It really makes potential relationships tricky.

    • @07ikkin
      @07ikkin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yess. I think about the same thing. I'm 28 and feel people will see me and think I'm too young. The only thing that can help that is the context in which you meet the person.

    It’s hard when patients see me and they’re like “are you even old enough”. I’m always getting doubted. I have been stopped by airport staff saying I can’t travel alone. I feel like I’m getting judged in Victoria secret, like why is this 12 year old looking at lingerie. So can people stop telling me that I’m lucky I look young? It’s not fun to have people treat me like a child and talk down to me like “awh.. sweety... you are so cute” when we’re the same age.

      My mum has always looked young. She's almost 50 now and I'm 22. People younger than her treat her like she has no life experience. Then when we say she's my mum they look at her like I'm her mistake... Then when they find out her real age they're confused. It's hilarious now, but she didn't always enjoy it for sure

    My thing is when people say, "you're so cute" I understand they mean well and that they don't mean to be condescending but it's the fact that when you're "cute" you are automatically simply lesser in a way. You aren't really taken seriously... I just politely smile and say thank you though...

      That's the word: "lesser " exactly how I feel and it's exhausting, as a woman you already have to prove your worth so much more to the world. So to have a disadvantage to look "lesser" feels like a curse to be honest , just wanna stay home so I don't have to deal with it !

  • @elizabethgunn2501
    @elizabethgunn2501 4 ปีที่แล้ว +267

    Here's the thing about the "you'll love it when you're older" comment. Sure, I'll think its a cute little compliment when I'm 50 and beyond but that doesn't make up for the lack dates when I was a teenager b/c I looked like a 5th grader, the lack of job offers, the promotions that passed me up the 10,000 times someone asked the less-knowledgeable colleague next me a question when I'm staring them in the face. This feature things can deeply affect self-esteem and definitely affects my lifetime earnings which means by the time I'm enjoying that 'compliment' from the cute 20-something waiter, it will be at the discount night at the local applebee's because that's all I will be able to afford in retirement. I'd gladly take the respect and admiration in my teens/20s/30s/40s and trade that for looking older at 60.

    In a sea of "how to look younger" videos on TH-cam, this video is a breath of fresh air. "Looking the part" is extremely important for a young woman's credibility and skill, and thank you for taking the time to acknowledge that. I wish it were easier for women to just receive basic respect in the workforce without having to change their appearance, but if this is the way it has to be, you did an excellent job of demonstrating some key points. Thank you!!!

    Thank you for this video. It feels good to know we’re not alone! I’m 34, looking like 18-20. It’s so annoying when people won’t take you seriously because they assume you’re way younger than you are. How many times did I hear : “You’re so cute”, “You’re too young for that”, “Can I see your ID please”, “You’ll see when you’ll be older”… I own my business as a figure skating coach and every time I say I’ve been skating for almost 30 years people are like “you mean 13 right?!?”… To all the people who wish they could younger, trust me, it’s not a blessing to, almost, never been taken seriously.

    Last year I got handed a bunch of pamphlets in a museum to "hand out to my classmates at school"... I graduated university five years ago 😒 I've also been legally allowed to buy alcohol for over 10 years but still get ID'd every single time. It's SO frustrating and one of the worst things is how nobody understands how frustrating it is. I don't care about looking young, I just want to be taken seriously! (Although I do have to say, I got the babyface gene from my mom and she does actually love it now that she's older 😜)

      I have an Asian friend who really struggles with this since she's a teacher. Her students sometimes show disrespect since she looks so young 😥 she tried to cut her hair, change her outfits and wear more makeup but that's such a big chunk of your time and energy everyday spent on appearance...

I'm a journalist, so it's important to command respect when I'm interviewing someone in a position of power like a police chief - but usually people think I'm an college intern, so they rarely give me that respect. Looking older (or at least my age) is definitely a priority for me.

      I was a journalist right out of college, and so many municipal representatives treated me like garbage! I always tried to dress professionally, even though the other reporters mostly wore jeans, but I sometimes wonder if that made everyone think I thought I was better than them (small town where a lot of people my parents' age and older didn't go to college, and were the ones holding office). 🤷

    It’s about time someone makes a video about this topic. Thank you very much for addressing this. I’m 33 yrs old and my height is 5”4. I’ve been told my entire adult life that i look like I’m in high school. It has always bothered me when people say that to me. I don’t see it as a gift in any way. My husband is 10 yrs older than me and he’s been told by random people that they thought I was his daughter. Before I had my 2 boys, I was often told to put on some weight because apparently I was too thin. I can go on and on about this. I too have also felt that people I have worked with never took me serious including family. I have always felt till this day that people in any room still view me as a kid and it stresses me out every time without fail. I have tried finding ways to present myself more maturely in public events, family get togethers, etc but don’t feel that I have mastered it yet. Thank you very much for providing great advice. I will most definitely be applying this to my day to day life. Thank you!!

    The voice thing is VERY important.
    When you are conscious of how high or low your voice sounds, you can get more control over it.
    Talk slow, breathe after every sentence instead of saying "uhh".
    Maybe even stop yourself from filling a silent moment so that you can think of what to say next.
    I lower my voice and I even talk more silently when I want people to really listen in on me.
    Obviously I'm not gonna whisper as if I'm insecure about what I'm saying, I just want to lower my voice so I know people will HAVE to listen more intently.
    Doing these things also works a bit on your mood, so you'll calm down automatically usually.

    I very rarely rarely comment on videos but thank you so much for creating this. At 20 as someone who is barely 5 foot,petite EVERYWHERE and lives in heels, it is so hard to be taken seriously. Having men/women tower over me does nothing for my confidence and does more to devalue me and make me feel childlike as if nobody will take me seriously than anything else. Ill start a job in the new year with a huge corporate firm and people's perception of me is still something i worry about. But this video and the fact that I got the job AFTER having seen me, i feel much more reassured that my skills 'reach' far beyond my height.

    I've struggled with this for YEARS. It is so frustrating, especially working in the mental health field with kids and parents. I need to be taken seriously and respected. I am petite and have often been told I look young. I've worked hard at this for 2 years but finally feel like I feel satisfied. I get teens at work guessing that I'm in my 30s rather than barely 18 when I'm 26.
    I started buying more classic pieces in petite sizes. I got away from leggings and sweats and instead started choosing clothes more mindfully for the environment. I traded sneakers for a pair of pointed low heel boots or thicker strap sandals. I started paying attention to the details of clothes that make it look juvenile, or how people younger and older than me dress. A teen at work recently said I "dress like an old lady" and "seem like I've been in this work for a while" which, although he doesn't know it, is the biggest complement from a teenage boy 😆
    Besides that, I worked on emotional maturity and speaking more fluidly. I found people to look up to and model after, who I meet and think "wow they are so well spoken!" It has made a huge difference.

I try and keep it lighthearted so I don't sound pretentious, but then they know from the get go why I'm there. I also look young but have a deeper voice, so the combo of the words and voice usually sets the tone well from the start

    This is a great video because many of us struggle in the workplace. When I was in my late 20s, people would ask me where I was going to college. No one wanted to sell me a car and asked me to come back with my parents. My coworkers talked over me during meetings. Looking young is a blessing, but can also be very frustrating... so thank you for these tips. Great video!

    Ugh the struggle of being perceived as child-like rather than womanly sucks 😭
    It feels like sneakers, oversized t-shirts & cute hairstyles, etc are things I have to miss out on because as soon as I try em, I personally feel less like a mature woman. The insecurity that it can come with, especially if you happen to be petite & slim 😔 It's easy to stop feeling as feminine or womanly as others seem to look.

    Thank you so much for this video! I'm 22 and have been told multiple times in professional situations that I look 12...thanks for making me feel less alone on this! I think styling your hair can totally help too. I've dressed in neutrals, but if my hair is natural I'm still treated as immature; whereas if I style my hair I get more respect. It's kinda bullshit that we have to do all this but glad we can help each other out! Thanks again girlie!

    Not gunna lie, upon reading the title my initial thought was that of everyone else's in the comment section- why would you want to look older ?? but I totally get what you're saying. Renting an apartment, buying a car, discussing business...so many instances where looking older/professional can come in handy. Also, I appreciate how you included pictures of people who don't just look like you. That's really cool. Great video!

    I went to the ER and they asked for my date of birth 3 times even though I scanned my ID! They told me, "we weren't going to let you in until a parent was present, "we thought you were a'kid' omg, you must get carded a lot, omg!!" My initial thought was they must see some busted ass teenagers. 😂 Last Wednesday day I got stopped at the store b/c the worker thought I had a wine bottle (it was evoo) and I wasn't "allowed" to purchase b/c I'd have to be 21. What?! All of this in 2 weeks! Sheesh. I'm 32 and a grown woman, I demand respect, but I also do NOT want to look older!! 😁😆

    I have a baby face and people think I'm underage when I'm close to 30. It's just too much of a difference, and people treat me like a child, which also lowered my confidence but doesn't affect me anymore. I haven't had any look with the wardrobe tips yet but I'll keep trying different things. I'm also looking into makeup tutorials to look older with my type of face. Thank you for this video.
