    I’m in my 20s and it’s a struggle to find clothes that aren’t young and trendy but also aren’t too grown up haha. I’ve just started to develop my grown up style and there is so much I still need to learn!

      totally get that, I had the same experience! I guess I would say to look into your closet and imagine it was someone else's. What age do you think they are? Ultimately I don't think age matters as long as it's true to you your taste, but it can be a helpful way to assess your closet.

      I thought adult clothes would sacrifice style but it's quite the opposite. I'm loving the mature chic clothing I'm finding and wearing now that I've reached 30.

      Exactly how I feel! I'm turning 22 this year and I've always loved incorporating preppy looks into my style but thought it was too "grown up" for me.

      I dressed trendy/ tacky in my 20s and i dont regret it, it was fun. you have your whole life to become more refined. I wish I would have worn more crop tops in my 20s -now I have a mommy tummy and can’t wear them. have fun gurl!!

    I feel like finding a grown up style can be so tough in your 30’s. So many brands target teens or older women.
    I want to be able to feel grown up and put together as a 34 year old and to shop from brands that focus on quality and sustainability. I appreciate your thoughts on this!

      I’m right there with you. I am one year post partum. It’s been a difficult journey to get my body back. It’s still not back. Lol. I am now attempting to elevate my style. I am 30 years old and after years of following current trends. I simply can’t do it anymore. I’m a mother now and comfort, confidence, and elegance is more of what I’m trying to convey.

    I have come to realize I love print midi dresses. I didn’t wear them because all the influencers say that at a certain age you shouldn’t wear those dresses because they make you look frumpy. Then I’ve come to realize that I have a very edgy haircut and I were very edgy accessories and some very chic black blazers and some long line cardigans. Once I started adding my print dresses with these items, I have totally felt at home, and now I always have something to wear. I have been getting a ton of compliments at work.The dresses are so comfortable and the accessories add an edge that doesn’t make it look frumpy. I add fleece tights and boots for cold days. Now I can get rid of all my pants and jeans that I have not been wearing.

      Love the vibe that you're conveying with your style! I think it's easy to cover a lot of ground by giving quick do's and don'ts, but there is a lot of nuance to style where you can still take what you love and give it an edge, like you're doing. Well done!

    • @damarisltrevizo
      @damarisltrevizo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I absolutely relate. 🙏 I just turned 29 and many think I’m still 21-24! To be honest though, I now love it (finally!), and believe you’ll hopefully get to a point in which you embrace it too. ☺️
      It also helped me to think about it this way, from a thought in the book Atomic Habits: if you find what you’re good at, and you also love it, but aren’t naturally built for it, you can still be good, but someone who is also good at it (example: swimming), loves it, AND was born with a swimmers body (lean and whatnot), will have an advantage (which is just the way of life!), SO it is recommended that we find what blends what we’re good at/what we love/AND what we naturally have an advantage on (one of our major flexes is looking much younger than we are). 💪 I hope you find what that is for you ✨

    Very timely this popped up for me! I realized when I was in my early 20s that I was dressing "too old" to differentiate myself from my peers (I wasn't a "party girl," eg) and now that I'm nearly 30, I realized I've been trying to dress much younger lately (probably because I was dressing "too old" when I "should have" been following trends), and it's making me really uncomfortable. So excited to hear your thoughts!

    Another piece I would love to see .... "Older and Younger". So what do I mean by that? A woman reaches an age in her 50's and 60's where she wants to dress to avoid looking like an 80 year old great grandma but she also doesn't want to be mutton dressed as lamb. And often it comes at a time in her life when she is retiring from work, adult children leaving home, divorcing and going back on the dating market, or becoming a grandma. How do we keep style which is age appropriate? Admits our figures have changed? Deals with life changes?

    • @bethanyleonardo

    It’s taken a very long time. I am honestly in this point of my life where I have found my style and I don’t have to own more to look put together and ready each day. I feel confident and I love all of my own pieces. You are awesome! Thank you! Can totally relate! My age 59….and loving this stage!

  • @alexandrasmith7682
    @alexandrasmith7682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This piece is so appropriate. I have so many cashmere little cardigans but truthfully the two things I was missing were a couple of heavier duty sweaters that I could wear for dog walking, days on the spring beach. I have avoided shopping for these because I like natural fabrics but don't get on with wool, many of the sweaters are too bulky, and I am a petite five foot tall, small but busty. I go online at 0200 and start wandering around shoes, bags which I don't need and don't look for what I need. So, finally I faced up and trawled favourite sites with a very narrow critique. Took some time, but I found a lovely pure cotton sweater in navy new for this Spring (so full price) and when it arrived I was thrilled to find that it was exactly what I had needed. I went back online and checked for other colours and picked a teal green which again works perfectly in my colours. I know I paid full price but I also know that I will wear these so much.

    I’m in my mid 20s and it’s so hard to find clothes that I like because everywhere I go even online is “trendy” styles. It’s a bit too youthful for my liking, but I can’t find anything that works for me so I struggle finding my own style w/o being bombarded to wear what everyone else wears because that’s all I’m surrounded by. I’m still trying to find my style 🥲

    I still haven't watched the video but I wanted to say that Bethany's videos, among others, have really helped me in the process of renewing and "adulting" my wardrobe. I'm 26 and not done yet but I'm in a place now where I'm able to build outfits I like and feel confident in, despite some difficulties due to the fact my style is somewhat androgynous and I'm still in the process of figuring it out.

    I love going to the tailor! I recently fell in love with a coat, decided to treat myself and am already planning to get it tailored. So worth the extra effort compared to only filtering my style by size and what brands are willing to offer in petite (I’m 5ft 1in).

    These tips are so helpful Bethany! Thank you! I just started working as a nurse aid again at my local hospital and have specific scrub colors to wear. I accessorize as much as possible in simple and classy ways through some earrings, hairstyle, and headbands. Tomorrow for Valentine’s Day, it’s some little heart shaped vintage gold earrings. I love accessorizing but need to be careful about not overdoing it in my everyday outfits. I love you comment about personal style being more important than body shape. So many of us feel restricted in our personal style due to putting body shape first. There are so many ways to manipulate the cut and style and color of something to suit our body shape more while catering to personal style. I am learning this more recently and having so much fun diving back into some color and certain styles; finding pieces that suit my body shape or finding different ways to wear it for more flattering work while still enjoying my style.

    I would LOVE a video on tailoring! Especially in terms of how you decide the length you want each pair of pants.
    I’m 5’2” and I should definitely get getting my pants hemmed but I’m suck wondering what length. Im so intrigued with how you use both the longer length for a stilt effect, and also the cropped length for a different elongated look. How do you decide when to leave them long or when to go short? (And, when you go short, how to do decide the perfect spot to crop them to?)
    And do you have to have the shoes that you plan to wear with them already to make that choice, or can you hem first and find shoes second?
    I’ve seen magazines recommended getting two of your jeans and keep one longer and one shorter for different shoes, do you do that?

    I love your thoughts on timeless style. I’d be super interested in hearing what you have to say about timeless athletic wear. I don’t work in a typical “professional” environment. I am a dancer, a yoga teacher & performing artist. So I mostly wear athletic/leisure wear. I don’t always feel elevated or put together. I don’t desire buying expensive brands to try to be elevated athletic chic either. I know there’s a lot of trends in the fitness community and lots of people wear athletic wear nowadays. Ive once heard dancers style described as homeless Nike chic lol. I also go out dancing socially at night. Lots of trends in the club scene!! I feel more comfortable wearing elevated timeless style while out dancing, but it’s not all the time. So I don’t want to invest in casual wear because I don’t wear it much. Just spewing some thoughts! Trying to have a more sustainable wardrobe long term!

    • @bethanyleonardo
      @bethanyleonardo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Love hearing about your lifestyle. Sounds incredibly fun! Definitely don't lose sight of what's practical for your life. I actually cover a lot of ground on the sporty/casual/chic topics in my course, so I think you could benefit from that. But for now the main thing regarding the trends that are in your social spheres - It's okay to try trends, nothing wrong with that, but it comes with some traps like not having things represent you fully, not valuing the things you once liked simply because someone told you it was "out", etc. You also might need less of a lifespan of each piece: If you're actively moving around in them then they prob don't need to last 10 years. But wish you all the success in the world!

    Something that I have faced is the fact of not having a style that is on trend so people don’t appreciate or think that I look “good” but then I know and feel better by using what I like and I know that I put effort into it, with time som people and I find out the level of details that I care about, so i tried not to care a lot about trends or what other prefers, my lesson is that as far as I use what I like and find my own style I will feel better and even people will notice that.

    ...
    It's difficult to find people with a similar body type as mine and proportion-wise we are similiar... all of this to say that I find you incredibly relatable 💕, and while I'm working on building a wardrobe slowly I would love seeing some "try on" hauls, with your touch, of course, not meant to induce people to excessive-thoughtless-shopping, which I love. So reviews/try-ons of quality clothing items for this body type kind, I'd love to see!

    Also, I hadn't been shopping in a while. I've been watching lots of fashion bloggers....Some are very highend and it costs 200 $ for a plain white shirt and to me very high prices. You don't have to spend that kind of $. I was shocked that I went to Old Navy and found great jeans 👖, tea shirts botton nice button down shirts , 2 belts , a jean jackets for less than 200 $.
    I was surprised 🎉 on a good way. The bottom line is that if its not great, at least we didn't break the bank. All the best to everyone!! Stay ❤️‍🩹

    I am difficult to fit because I am short and pear shaped. But I have finally figured it out that shape of the outfit is the most important. Color is second. I am finding it easier to find things in 2022 , which is sort of surprising as there are a lot of boxy shirts in style. I will never wear a box shape.

      I honestly can't tell you how encouraging the words "keep doing it" was to me. After 7 years of uploading here, I sometimes don't know what to do next, but this just means so much. So thank you for that :) I got married at barely 21 while still in college, and it was a lot to juggle. But you have the chance to see major milestone anniversaries one day, and just know that things will get lighter and clearer, and squeeze every bit of joy out of this chapter. Wish you all the best!

    I do think the hardest thing right now is matching my personal style with my body type.
    My toughest challenge is finding feminine tops that work with my broad chunky shoulders! I love my shoulders in general and they work well when I want to dress more masculine, but I feel ridiculous wearing anything remotely feminine with ruffles and puffs on top because my shoulders get way too exaggerated and it’s a bit ridiculous lol. So I’m trying to work out what feminine features up top can work for my wide back and shoulders. 🙃 so are I know that V-necklines work, and loose, more draped fabrics. But I wanna know more. It is prob alt trial and error. :)

    • @denizyardmc8616
      @denizyardmc8616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have the same body/style combo and i totally get what you mean.
      This is what worked for me:
      I enjoy putting the draping and frills on the elbow or forearms as opposed to directly on the shoulder line. Peplum tops are a great feminine piece that complements my strong shoulders. You’re on point when it comes to V-necks, too
      Hope this helps your trial and error ☺️

    • @redsquare4835
      @redsquare4835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@denizyardmc8616 yes! I agree! I have a sweater with has a more balloon style sleeve but it’s at the forearm rather than the shoulder. It’s a great sweater for me, like what you said. Slowly learning 😊😎

      I have quite broad shoulder (and hips) as well and I've found that a square neckline suits me really well! I feel like it really balances out my top/shoulders and looks much better than a spaghetti strap for example

    • @redsquare4835
      @redsquare4835 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ginnyl7208 oooh okay! I’ve never tried square necklines, or any kind of deep and exposing necklines, but I’d like to give them a try and see :) I’ve always just played it safe with close crew necks, but they aren’t very feminine!

    • @ginnyl7208
      @ginnyl7208 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redsquare4835 a square neckline doesn't neccesarily have to be revealing :) I'm sure that you could find tops that would cut of at the top of or above your chest. but I don't have a big chest so none of my tops tend to be revealing haha.

    I'm in my 20s, but I'm not a big fan of trendy outfits like ,crop tops, printed pants, ripped jeans anything like that. I prefer a classy look, such as a long-sleeved button-down shirt with a trouser and also neutral colotrs. I like how its minimal but elegant.

    Thank you for this video. I’m in that awkward stage of life in my mid-late twenties where my wardrobe is still half-university student, half-professional. I’m becoming more comfortable with myself and my body, but now wonder if the types of clothes that show that off are no longer age-appropriate (am I too old for mini skirts)?

    I'm almost 22 and really struggling with finding my style. I'm generally not that into the trendy pieces anymore that are more catered towards teens, but I'm also not completely into the typical "grown up" look I tend to see with women my age here (sweater, blazer/coat, pants, ankle boots, ect. Type of thing). I still like certain trendy styles like a bootcut, as it suits my body well but I'm still developing my style. I can go a lot of ways in the sense that sometimes I dress very feminine and other times very simple and edgy. I would say I do spend more attention to what I wear now in the sense of putting everything together and making it an actual 'outfit'. So looking at what shoes and jewelry go best with the clothes, matching my makeup and making sure my hair looks nice as well. When before I was more a 'put on what's most comfortable with minimal effort' type of girl. Then I would only make an effort if I was doing something I wanted to look special for. Now I try to incorporate that feeling a little bit into everyday
