    Fake Plastic Tree is a master piece... There is something in this song that is so complex

    • @captgeech
      @captgeech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      What's funny is from a musical standpoint there is nothing in the song very complex at all lol. But that's what incredible songwriters can do. Makes another musician hear it and think... "how the hell is that so simple and so beautiful" It reminds me of Roger Waters saying he considered throwing the lyrics to "Breathe" in the trash at first, but if you've got that gift you can take the most simple ideas and make something extraordinary out of it.

      It's the dynamics and emotion. The build up and release is cathartic. It is missing from so much constructed music nowadays. This one and Blur's 'The Universal' are songs that always leave me feeling like I've been through something and I never get tired of them.

    Seeing them on tour for the bends, then OKC, then Kid A.... they’re still a great band, but live, that 1995-2001 period was like .... watching magic.

    • @dahliafiend
      @dahliafiend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dude same. This is exactly what I always say. Saw them three times in San Francisco during that period. The Fillmore The Warfield and Bill Graham Civic The Warfield concert was the best concert, the best anything I’ve ever seen. It was like they were levitating.

    • @RustinChole
      @RustinChole 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dahliafiend over the years I’ve loved all their stuff. But lately it’s been becoming more and more clear that there was just this ..... intangible quality to that period. I remember thinking “well.... they belong to the world now” when I saw them on the HTTT tour.

    • @dahliafiend
      @dahliafiend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RustinChole ya it was bound to happen. The third show was the least fun for me because by then it was just massive. I should see them live again though. I literally haven’t since 2000.

    • @dahliafiend
      @dahliafiend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RustinChole any artist or band that is on the verge of breaking to another level is usually at their very best. I guarantee seeing The Rolling Stones way back when would be much different than it is now. That’s why artists that die at their peak are so celebrated. It’s entirely possible Hendrix could have alienated his entire initial fan base and gone through a synthesizer phase. Hah. But instead he’s remembered for a few years of his short life.

    • @RustinChole
      @RustinChole 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dahliafiend I gotta admit outside of a FEW exceptions you’re 100% correct. But I definitely enjoyed seeing them on The Moon Shaped Pool tour, but it was cause I was adamant about getting within no less than 30-40ft from the stage. I saw them on KOL and was SO far back I didn’t even really feel that .... Radiohead live feeling. And even then, ..... saw I’m just feeling nostalgic and enjoying the light show, god I miss when people didn’t sing along to songs like “exit music” and “how to disappear.”

    Tom Yorks vocal abilities were so underrated. If you google his voice type, most people will say he's a low or high "tenor", and therefore a lot of people assume because of this he can easily sing those high notes but I actually don't think that's true. I think he's actually a high maybe low baritone, like the majority of men, and it's his technique that allows him to naturally go higher, instead of belting and damaging his voice like he did in his early days.
    There's a reason why he sings so soft other than for effect. I think he's very skilled in mixing his chest and head voice and he uses this mix voice a lot to achieve notes he would otherwise have to belt/shout and risk damaging his voice. (Billy Eilish is someone modern day that does the same thing). He understands that he can't just "belt" high range notes all the time with his voice type because it likely won't sound good, and it may damage his voice in the long run. He sings so soft so he can make the connection between the head and chest voice and move around in all ranges, and not just necessarily to just sing high notes, but also to make a beautiful seamless transition between the low and high registers.
    You can see him attempt to relax his voice after the last verse and he actually fails to sound the note, I think because he used slightly too much compression in the last verse, he lost that fine control basically. You can look at his older performances and see the difference in vocal styles. Pablo Honey vocals weren't sustainable for his voice where as a lot of Ok Computer onwards were sustainable, you hear it in the songs, and I think it was because of this technique.
    He's underrated because this is a very difficult thing to achieve. It's truly something that not many people have the discipline master. Some people just sing naturally as a kid and instinctively know how to do this. Think someone like Adele. But people like Adele are susceptible to all kinds of problems later in life, simply because they don't actually understand how they "instinctively" sing. Someone like Tom Yorke likely wasn't a great singer and had to learn via a technical approach, probably with the help of a decent vocal coach. But it's possible he worked it out by himself because I did for myself. Took me years to realise lol. But I did so I'm sure other people can.

    Mike moguls is barely present onstage. Not like Nate and Conor. He’s a great guy huh.
    Radiohead and Conor oberst are able to play their hearts out every night because no matter what they do the industry will sell them well. So they have a duty in their hearts which creates a gratitude. A grateful performance. Where Conor overstep pretends to be drunk and fall down several times and leave the show and wear black and white every dam time. They can do whatever they want, so they play almost as truly as I do.

      OMG.. THANK YOU! I've given this band SO many chances because of the way SO many people talk like they're the greatest band on Earth. Just listen for a minute without looking...You'll wanna call the suicide hotline. I know...To each his own... but, again....THANK YOU for saying it! It's one slow, depressing sound track played by some guys who got a guitar & 3 free lessons for Christmas & are ready to quit & go back on heroin. OK, I'll leave now. Enjoy, All!
