Robert Cray definitely helped keep the flame of the blues burning in the '80s. Also, Chicago's own Alligator Records, the best blues label around (and still going strong with new artists in 2023), put out a *huge amount* of amazing blues albums in the '80s. Check out the band, The Kinsey Report, and their first album from '87, "Edge of the City."
Saw George Nov 1982, he covered a bunch of Blues artists songs(Elmore James, John Lee Hooker etc). I was fortunate to see many blues artists in the 80s and 90s. I saw Son Seals in 1986, Robert Cray and Little Charlie & the Nightcats in 1988, John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy in 1989, Albert Collins in 1991 for example.
He’s got a song called Get a Haircut and Getba Good Job. Was one of his later songs. Tells of how his father compared him to his brother and now he’s the rich one.
“One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer” is one of his most entertaining songs. I think you two have such a large following because 1) you obviously enjoy music, 2) you pause as necessary, not constantly, and 3) you give entertaining, often enlightened insights. Too many reactors are not only in love with the pause button but repeat and explain each set of lyrics back to us like we’re idiots: “He said he drinks alone. In other words, he doesn’t need other people around to drink. Some people like to be alone when they drink.” It’s okay to state the obvious some of the time in a spontaneous reaction, but some folks can do nothing else. I love how you hit the perfect balance with enjoyable but intelligent comments, never talking down to your audience. You talk to us as if we’re old friends. Hope you do this for a long time.
Great song. The interesting thing is, the line at the end of the song which was "the only one who'll hang out with me is my dear old grand dad." Many thought George was talking about his actual grand dad. Unaware that 'My Dear Old Grand Dad' is the name of a liquor. Great stuff.
Another vote for Who Do You Love and Move It On Over. And if you check out his One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer then also check out the version by bluesman John Lee Hooker.
I just discovered this song maybe 6 or 7 years ago. If I drank, this would be my song. Whatever I do nowadays, I prefer to be alone. George Thorogood never had a hit single in the USA, but these songs are very popular on classic rock stations. I'm sure they were on the rock charts.
Willie and the hand jive was his only billboard hot 100 hit, but his albums would go gold almost all the time. He just didn’t have radio friendly music at the time coming out during the disco era! Greatest story of George and the destroyers: During the late 1970s, Thorogood and his band were based in Boston. He was friends with Jimmy Thackery of the Washington, D.C.-based blues band, The Nighthawks. While touring in the 1970s, the Destroyers and the Nighthawks were playing shows in Georgetown at venues across the street from each other. The Destroyers were engaged at the Cellar Door and the Nighthawks at Desperados. At midnight, while both bands played Elmore James's "Madison Blues" in the same key, Thorogood and Thackery left their clubs, met in the middle of M Street, exchanged guitar cords and went on to play with the opposite band in the other club.
I also remember when he did the 50/50 Tour. He played a show in all 50 states in 50 days travelling in a Checker Cab(except when he played in Hawaii). He opened for the Stones around that time and the Stones secretly rehearsed with him because they briefly considered replacing Ron Wood whom they were having trouble with.@@truckrboat
George is still going strong. We’ve seen him 4 or 5 times in the last 10 years and have tickets for his next show here in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, which was postponed until next year. He puts on a great concert.
Great reaction! There are so many good Thorogood songs, Move it on over, Who do You Love, Get a Haircut, No Particular Place to Go , Madison Blues or It wasn't Me just to name a few for you.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his, "Who Do You Love" and "Move It On Over" !!!!. Great guitar player!! Saw him in concert 11/20/82. Great show! Amber, their song "Kids From Philly" is mostly a sax solo. edit- Hank "Hurricane" Carter on saxophone. Old Grand-Dad bourbon stopped using that name after 2015, became "The Olds". So that's the grand dad he was talking about!
I was in university in the 80's & bartending.🍻 When this song came on everyone grabbed their drink, (or ordered one)put it in the air & stomped & danced till the song was over. Needless to say their drinks went empty & rushed the bar! Cheers, ya all!!! 🍻
The "sax player" whom you shouted out to is none other than the incomparable Hank "Hurricane" Carter. He sadly passed away on September 14, 2021. All of his solos in every GT song is as dirty as it gets... "Nobody But Me" in particular - he _really_ went berserk on that! 🎷🔥
I lived in Delaware all my life and when I was 18 in 1982,my friend and I met George Thorogood when he pulled up in his modified Taxi at a red light. We followed him back to his recording studio and hung out. He is a really nice guy.
In 1985 I saw George & The Destroyers opening for ZZ Top....one of my best concert memories ever. Hope next George song you check out is One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer...👍👍😁 Peace and love to all 🙏❤️😎🇨🇦
Live shows he did in the 1980s, he was a dancer too. Jitterbug all around, up & down while singing, and playing his guitar. I have seen G and Ds more than a dozen times.
Saw George and the Delaware Destroyers in a tiny bar in South Jersey around 1976 or 1977. The Alloway Village Inns walls are still shaking from that Saturday night.
Good tune. Love Thorogood. Another great 80’s song that you have missed. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band - On The Dark Side Another George Thorogood song- Who do ya love.
When I was in high school there was one friend we would always hang out and drink in his basement. After one very hydrated evening, there were 4 or 5 of us that stayed over sleeping in chairs, on the couch, or on the floor. In the morning, his mother came downstairs and woke us up after noticing a large number of empties that we had not yet cleaned up. Now, none of us were hung over because we were all still drunk. We all acted like we were still asleep except for Murph. He couldn't because his mom was grilling him. It took everything I had to not bust out laughing when she was wanting names of everyone that was there the previous night and he just rolled his head toward her and said with a straight face, half closed eyes and slurred words, "I drink alone". And he even sung it like in the song. 😂
Saw him in 1981 on the second night of his 50/50 tour (50 states in 50 nights) in a small room in Anchorage, Alaska. He and his band had the place rocking.
One of George’s songs that I absolutely love is called “Get a Haircut”. This is a FUN, put a smile on your face, and Laugh song. Hope you guys will considering listening to it. I LOVE your channel, Jay & Amber …. Please continue to make each one of us smile everyday. I appreciate all of your hard work. Love from Mississippi ❤❤
I recall seeing George and the Delaware Destroyers way back during his bar touring days before they hit it big, and enjoyed that as well. Can't count the number of times I've seen him...one place was an amusement park 😂😂😂
George is an incredible showman. He feeds off of the crowd. I saw him in concert and lost the hearing in my left ear for about a week (too close to the speaker) due to his high high pitch notes. Yeah, it was a good time.
Yeah man! Now you're talking my language. I love the blues. This is a classic 12 bar blues. I think that's what Amber was asking about in terms of song structure. Gotta pay my respects to Jay Guns. You look strong enough to twist the head off a Gundar!
A friend of mine is a huge George Thorogood and The Destroyers fan and he follows them around doing several concerts in a row. He told me he has hung out with the band at bars after shows and George really does drink alone. He said the band and him and his wife will be hanging out and George will sit by himself having drinks. I also saw ZZ Top with George Thorogood opening a couple of times. Great pairing for sure!
Georgie has a lot of great music up his sleeve and the Destroyers are the best. My fav is "Who Do You Love." Next one pretty please and not such a long time between.
George Thourogood, Steve ReVauhn, Leynord Skynard, Molly Hatchet, the early ZZ top, and Tom Petty all had that crunchy spicy, classic, Southern Rock/Bluesy sound.
A George thorogood concert is always high intensity & " the destroyers" are a fantastic backing band, I would advise anybody who enjoys good old fashioned rock music to go and see them perform, you will leave with a smile on your face & a determination to see them again
Hey Rob Squad another awesome reaction to an iconic song! George Thorogood is a great blues guitarist and a great storyteller. This is probably my favorite song of his. Like all of Thorogood’s hits, it’s raunchy and witty at the same time. And that saxophone! 🎷❤🎷
My goodness! Saw him in at Parkers in Seattle. 80s I needed him. Dude came out and walked table to table doing a lead. Sure glad I saw him. Sure glad I made it home.
Speaking of unique voices, you need to check out "Downtown Train" by Tom Waits. He's got the kind of voice you either love it or you hate it. I have a feeling Jay and Amber would be split on Tom Waits, but it's hard to guess which one will love it and which one will hate it.
I grew up north of Philadelphia and George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers obviously started out in Delaware and often sang in Philly bars. I saw him live when I was 21 y.o. in a small bar in Philly that held 75 people at the most. Good stuff.
