Tears are appropriate for this masterpiece. His last song and while it's a cover it is one of his greatest works. It calls to your soul, he knew it was his last song and you feel it
When Trent Reznor wrote and and performed it with NIN, it was a guy reflecting on how his heroin addiction messed his life up. When Mr Cash covered it, it was an old man reflecting on his life as he waited to die.. Trent heard Mr Cash's version and said it was his now.
Indeed. If this doesn't make you emotional you have to do some self-reflection. My conviction in life has always been respect your elders. Listen. Learn. R.I.P. Johnny and June 🙏
Exactly, grown man well past my mid life and I cry like a 5 year old that dropped his ice cream cone in the sand box every time I hear Johnny's version of this.
I saw this video on the Country Music Channel when it was first televised. It hit me very hard at the time. Now in my mid seventies, I find myself reflecting in a deeper manner. So much of my life is behind me now. So many people have gone away.More of my "authentic self" continues to reveal itself to me as I accept it more and more.
I have no idea how many times I’ve watched this video and it STILL brings a tear to my eye ever.single.time… it is truly a masterpiece and we owe Trent a debt of gratitude for allowing Johnny to make things Magnus Opus.
@avlisk both parents are already gone and 1 grandparent left, 2 surviving siblings. List my 2 best mates almost 30 years ago...so yeah...this hits hard!
Hi Karen! A little back history...the album containing Hurt by Johnny Cash was released Nov. 5th 2002. June Carter Cash..Johnnys wife of 35 years passed away on May 15th 2003. She is featured in this video with her pretty long hair standing on the stairs watching her husband she loved so dearly do this song. She was an amazing singer herself. And so sweet! Johnny died of a broken heart on Sept. 12th 2003..just 4 months after his wife June. The picture on the wall in the beginning is Johnnys mom. Would love to see you back with your guy Cliff doing reactions and hearing your opinions. Take care of yourself and Cliff! We love his channel here! Hugs! Suzy from Michigan
His wife June Carter was the reason he turned his life around decades ago. In this song was sung shortly before her passing. He didn't last more than a few months after that. Find it interesting he was always listening for new music until the end. 🚜🤠🐂
No doubt the comment section will soon fill up with all the facts and figures about this powerful cover, but the one that gets me is that his daughter Roseanne apparently said to him that it sounded like he was saying goodbye - his simple reply was: ''I am''.
If this performance doesn't reduce you to tears, then you're not human😭Every time I watch it, I cry.... Mum told me that she used to play Johnny Cash to me as a baby cos I NEVER slept, LOL, but as soon as I heard him, Mum said I just became 'still' & eventually fell asleep. Therefore, 'The Man In Black' saved my Mum's sanity & gave ME a huge appreciation for his work. 'Hurt' will always remain one of my favourite songs from Mr Cash - may he R.I.P.🖤
I had just moved to Hendersonville shortly before his house burned down (after Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees bought it), and his presence was still palpable. Great reaction you two! #WhatUpDoe
I agree with the prepping!! I've seen several people who react and say, "You'll like this part!" and it puts SO much pressure on the reactor to have those thoughts. It steals from the reaction! Thank you!
I'm older than Johnny was when he passed away, and I can tell you that the idea of starting all over again is fairly common, but when you consider it, there's not much hope of "fixing" things. Most of us, I think, will "keep" ourselves, just as Erin said. Hope I got the spelling right. It's my niece's name, and that's how she spells it. For my part, she's a great addition to your channel. Thanks for the double reaction, and God bless you both! edit: Sorry about that Karen, I thought you said Erin. See, I told you I'm old!!
It's OK I'm crying along right with you Karen I cry every time I've see it. Some songs just have that effect on people. Great reaction and Peace out guys ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
This song has a very special place in my heart for very fucked up reasons. I had a one night stand with an older lady, and then in the morning in my room we just happen to turn on the tv and this music video starts playing. Literally the second I turn it on. Never seen it before, and I was just blown away. Even in the moment, I wondered if it had some grander significance, but in my mind I was only considering that I might make this poor lady hurt. I went on to have a 14 year relationship with her, complete with 2 kids, where she abused and hurt me in ways I can't talk about and you couldn't even imagine. Even she would agree she was damaged and destructively mentally ill and totally crushed the life out of me. But it is just so eery for me, that this song played after I met her, like a warning from god, who I don't believe in...
I'm a 50'ish male, and I actually cried the first three times I saw this video! It starts with a young virile man, a husband with a beautiful wife, all the success of the early years! He finds his old childhood home in there, and then they both get old, and still loved each other! And of course, June died before the video was released, and Johnny was left alone with his memories of her for a short time. until he followed her. I still feel like both crying and cheering for a life well lived together!
If this doesn't bring the tears you are a lost human being. It's a very, very good thing if this brings you to tears. I'm an old man and it brings me to tears every single time. It's one of the most authentic songs ever produced.
This song has followed me since 2018, couple friends fight and try to die , i heard this amongst the most impactful time of my life and i wish it always pulls me to feelings
Welcome Karen! Your reaction was felt here. Cliff you are an incredible boyfriend the way you were with Karen throughout her watching and listening. When I am in a really dark place I put this song on cause I feel it more then and relate to it in parts and it actually comforts me if that makes sense.
His transformation came after his meeting with Billy Graham & how June stuck by him. A beautiful message, fantastic video accompaniment…just hits you, or should I say.
I never get tired of seeing people discover new music and honestly share their feelings. You two need to do more reactions like this together. Cliff, you need to bring Karen back (a lot) and show her the other side of Johnny Cash ... his younger playful side. A Boy Named Sue is the obvious next place to go. The song is a riot. It's one of those songs that a younger Johnny would make you smile with through his telling of the story.
Good reaction. Just hang onto each other. This video shows what's important in the end. It's the thoughts of a man at the end of his life. The NIN Trent Reznor version, which was the original, was of a younger person fighting addiction and figuring out your place in life. Much love to you guys!
"... for not all tears are an evil" (Gandalf at the end of Lord Of the Rings III) Being emotional is so important for us human. It makes us human. Never be ashamed to be touched by such wonderful (hurting) song. Everybody who doesn't feel it should be ashamed. Thank you so much for sharing your emotions with us. Wish you all the best.
Trent Reznor, the author from Nine Inch Nails, said that when he first heard this, it felt like someone else kissed his girlfriend. Later, he said that it wasn't his song anymore; that he just carried it for Johnny for a while. His wife, June Carter Cash, on the stairs, passed away not long after this was released. Johnny passed away not long after her. To see a pretty good telling of their life, watch Walk The Line with Juaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. I grew up listening to Johnny and this song tears me up every time I hear it. Other songs to listen to by Johnny are Man In Black, The Man Comes Around, which kind of bookend his greatest songs that he wrote himself. Ring of Fire was written by his wife. A favorite of my is his version of the Wabash Cannonball. The picture on the wall was his mother.
The last song he ever did, and he knew it. When he closed the lid on the piano, did it seem like he was closing the lid on his own casket? The man in black, was at peace with his own end.
When you look back on a long life, every misstep is magnified. I know that I wish that I could go back and change some things. This song is an important message to mankind. Your life will move by faster than you think. Don't have regrets when you're my age.
Glad you’ve learned to keep the tissues handy for Karen. This song makes me cry still if my heart is hurting. You to are beautiful together and this song is what can happen when you don’t get it right. Stay gold. Peace and love
The first photo on the wall of the silver haired lady is Johnny Cash's Mom....Later in the video are glimpses of him and his wife June Carter Cash, a successful singer and songwriter in her own rite.
Just a few notes about the video. The older lady in the framed photo on the wall was Mother Maybelle Carter, Johnny’s mother in law, who he dearly loved. The other woman that was live on camera was June Carter, Johnny’s wife. That little house he was walking around in the film clip was the house he grew up in … ‘dirt poor’, as they say.
I have never really won anything or felt lucky in my life. But I realized a few years ago I have never lost anyone too soon. No high-school car accidents, friends over dose etc. I am VERY LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED IN LIFE!!!
Great reaction. I take it as a warning to us all that we can change before its too late and that if we do not we will end up filled with regret and hurt before our end of days
When Nine Inch Nails did this song, it was about hitting bottom with your vices and mental health, while with Johnny Cash it's about reaching the end of your life. It's funny that the same words could hit quite differently.
There is is an artist, that I'm not sure you have reacted to in the country genre, his name is Joe Diffie he has a song that is called Ships That Don't Come In, I would highly recommend it, still holds a lot of valid points even to this day, he passed away in 2020, COVID complications
Don't worry. The only way to hear powerful music and song is innocently, for the first time. You may never feel it exactly the same way again, but you will never forget how you felt in that moment.
I've watched this Johnny Cash video several times and every time I do I can feel his pain so then I have to go watch something light-hearted like Van Halen's Hot for Teacher or maybe Phil Collins In the Air Tonight live 2004
Johnny only change one word from Trent original lyrics. Johnny sings "I wear this crown of THORNS" Trent's Lyrics are "I wear this crown of SHIT" BTW there a few YT vids were Trent talks about Johnny and the song
Johnny died broke. This song wasn't released yet. An American icon totally dead broke. When they went out to film this video, it was supposed to be him going to several places from his youth and waking around reacting to them. When they came to the cash museum, it had been closed for like 5 years or something. It had been foreclosed on. The night before it was foreclosed, Johnny had a big feast there for his crew and family. When they were done eating they simply left the table and food as it was. Now, when they got here, the guy filming decided to break in to the place... actually broke in.. and all the food was just as they left it... no mold or anything... crazy.. but they decided to film the entire video here, as Johnny was completely emotional... June was afraid he was going to pass out from the sadness he was experiencing.. but he pushed on, wanting it to be done. Great reaction.
Cry as you need to. 70 year old guys cry listening to this. 21 year old hard ass rappers cry when they here this. it is appropriate to feel the emotional power of this.
Both of yours emotional reaction to this song mirrors how i felt when i first heard this only a couple of years ago. Im eclectic in what music i listen but mainly rock or metal mostly. This rendition hit me hard at a very low point in my life and it always brings a tear to my eye. You both seem such caring people. I wish you both well and perhaps try Altay by Otyken and Ummet Otykan not my normal type but wow it catches you
Hurt” is a poignant and deeply moving song that was originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails in 1995 but gained even more popularity when Johnny Cash covered it in 2002. Written by Trent Reznor, the mastermind behind Nine Inch Nails, the song explores themes of pain, regret, and loss. However, Cash’s rendition added a layer of depth and vulnerability that resonated with listeners on a profound level. Known to have lived a life full of dangers and chemical abuse, Johnny Cash died in 2003, seven months after the release of his music video for ‘Hurt.’ The music video that has been nominated for an MTV award 7 times has a bit of a story when we consider the life Johnny Cash led for 71 years.😔 Valerie June Carter Cash (June 23, 1929 - May 15, 2003[1]) was an American country singer and songwriter. A five-time Grammy award-winner, she was a member of the Carter Family and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash. Prior to her marriage to Cash, she was known as June Carter and continued to be credited as such even after her marriage (as well as on songwriting credits predating it). She played guitar, banjo, harmonica, and autoharp, and acted in several films and television shows. Carter Cash was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2009. She was in this video and was Johnny’s second wife and was with him in this video. ☺️
Johnny's daughter saw this video shortly before he moved on to the next realm. She was emotional about it & told him "it sounds like you're saying goodbye". He replied "i am".
the woman on the stairs is his wife june carter. she came down the stairs to see him. she wasn't supposed to be there. she died shortly after this and he passed a few months later.
June died not long after this video was filmed from complications from what was supposed to be routine heart valve surgery. Johnny would be gone about 4 months later. His death certificate sites complications from diabetes as the cause of death, but I think he just decided he didn't want to be here any more without June. They had been through so much together, and she stood by him through the worst of times.
That is indeed true and beautiful. As a long time Reznor fan I approve 300 percent !
To be fair, Cash was also an addict. I think that;s a factor in why they really saw each other so clearly.
Crying is an appropriate reaction to this video. No need to fill the empty spaces. She gets it.
Indeed. If this doesn't make you emotional you have to do some self-reflection. My conviction in life has always been respect your elders. Listen. Learn. R.I.P. Johnny and June 🙏
Exactly, grown man well past my mid life and I cry like a 5 year old that dropped his ice cream cone in the sand box every time I hear Johnny's version of this.
ive heard this song countless times and tear up every time. The fact that it was his goodbye song makes it that much more powerful
When you get older you really understand him makes me cry everytime
I saw this video on the Country Music Channel when it was first televised. It hit me very hard at the time. Now in my mid seventies, I find myself reflecting in a deeper manner. The picture is his mom. The little house is where he was born and grew up.
And that's what hits hardest first, even old men miss their mamas.
51 year old man here - this song brings me to tears every time as it resonates so much.
Imagine watching this when you are in your 70's and everyone you loved has already gone away. It hits really really hard.
@avlisk both parents are already gone and 1 grandparent left, 2 surviving siblings. List my 2 best mates almost 30 years ago...so yeah...this hits hard!
This gets me every time. 😢

Nine Inch Nails, they said that Johnny owned it.
She's such a sweetheart. You better treat her right.
His wife June Carter was the reason he turned his life around decades ago.
In this song was sung shortly before her passing.
He didn't last more than a few months after that.
Find it interesting he was always listening for new music until the end.
🚜🤠🐂
It doesn’t matter how many times I hear this song or see a reaction to it, it STILL pulls tears from me every time.
No doubt the comment section will soon fill up with all the facts and figures about this powerful cover, but the one that gets me is that his daughter Roseanne apparently said to him that it sounded like he was saying goodbye - his simple reply was: ''I am''.
Rosanne gave him his real goodbye in her song September When It Comes.
If this performance doesn't reduce you to tears, then you're not human😭Every time I watch it, I cry....

This is one of the most powerful, introspective songs ever. Paired with the video, it's like a religious experience
I had just moved to Hendersonville shortly before his house burned down (after Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees bought it), and his presence was still palpable. Great reaction you two! #WhatUpDoe

Hits you the feels. Ladies and gentlemen...The Man in Black. Thanks Cliff. Loved the video reaction.
Aww Karen is precious. And my man consoling her like a champ. Loved the reaction.
It's OK I'm crying along right with you Karen I cry every time I've see it. Some songs just have that effect on people. Great reaction and Peace out guys ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
The emotions you displayed just shows you have a soul, that is what us fans want, not fake reactions.
Look, and this is the truth. I cannot watch this video without crying. Johnny is an American hero in my book. The man in black was awesome.
She's a sweetheart!What a good soul!
If you're ever in Nashville, check out his museum. It ends with this song and the velvet chair he sat in.

It’s even better 2nd, 3rd. 4th, time around. Love you two, along with Johnny Cash , reminding us what’s really important. . ❤️❤️❤️👵🏼 Gmaw
You two are so sweet together. A light shines bright down on you. Take care of each other. Cliff, my friend, you're blessed.

Cliff, your a lucky man, you two seem to vibe well together, nice to see in this day and age.
Got to see Johnny, Waylon, Willie and Kris at The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Back in the 80's. The Highwaymen. It was EPIC!
I hope Willie lives to a hundred and twenty at least.
You’re awesome sweetie ! So happy you were there to show true courage and definetely Love . ❤
The more you know about Johnny’s life, the more heartbreaking this video is.
Welcome Karen! Your reaction was felt here. Cliff you are an incredible boyfriend the way you were with Karen throughout her watching and listening. this song is impactful and beautiful.
The most honest song he ever did. Real emotions are ok. Karen, I hope you continue on the channel
YES WE ALL FACE OUR DEATHS ON OUR OWN.. IN OUR TRUE INNERSELF WAY..GREAT REACTION GUYS !!!
Good reaction. Just hang onto each other. This video shows what's important in the end. It's the thoughts of a man at the end of his life. The NIN Trent Reznor version, which was the original, was of a younger person fighting addiction and figuring out your place in life. Much love to you guys!

Being emotional is so important for us human. It makes us human. Never be ashamed to be touched by such wonderful (hurting) song. Everybody who doesn't feel it should be ashamed.

A song to hear with her. Beautiful guitar. Bittersweet love song from Joan Baez to Bob Dylan. Diamonds and Rust.
The way he closes the piano like a casket will always get ya
The last song he ever did, and he knew it. When he closed the lid on the piano, did it seem like he was closing the lid on his own casket? The man in black, was at peace with his own end.
When you look back on a long life, every misstep is magnified. I know that I wish that I could go back and change some things. This song is an important message to mankind. Your life will move by faster than you think. Don't have regrets when you're my age.
Think most of us wish we could go back and change things
Glad you’ve learned to keep the tissues handy for Karen. This song makes me cry still if my heart is hurting. You to are beautiful together and this song is what can happen when you don’t get it right. Stay gold. Peace and love
The first photo on the wall of the silver haired lady is Johnny Cash's Mom....Later in the video are glimpses of him and his wife June Carter Cash, a successful singer and songwriter in her own rite.
No apologies. It’s exactly what we all did the first time we saw the video too.
She got it. Her reaction was more than real...
You have a keeper there brother, someone that actually feels
This is it. The world has joy and sorrow. The whole person feels both.
...and we all have the legendary Rick Rubin to thank for making this cover happen.
There is a clip in this video of him in my favorite Columbo episode, where he superbly play a sympathetic killer.
Seeing this live with nine inch nails the original track I cried so hard every time this song gets some emotion out of anyone
I cry every time, the lyrics are brutal
NIN wrote this song about the future. And Johnny Cash sang this thinking of the past.
We are born alone and leave alone, sadly but true. Enjoy your love one.
I still think this is the greatest cover of all time.
I've watched this Johnny Cash video several times and every time I do I can feel his pain so then I have to go watch something light-hearted like Van Halen's Hot for Teacher or maybe Phil Collins In the Air Tonight live 2004
June passed 5/15/2003, Johnny followed 9/12/2003. The video was released 3/1/2003.
We got y'all. We have each other. Through reaction videos I get to vent. And yes TH-cam has lost it. Don't sensor us.
Happy 77th heavenly birthday Grandma 😢❤
In my opinion this is the best musical cover of all time.
She seems like a sweet kid. 😊
The music video cutting to a photo on the wall of his late wife during the lyric "everyone i know goes away in the end" always hits me like a truck.
Been listening to Johnny Cash since late 60s
Its ok, i bawl every time i hear thos song lol
Johnny only change one word from Trent original lyrics. Johnny sings "I wear this crown of THORNS"
Trent's Lyrics are "I wear this crown of SHIT"
BTW there a few YT vids were Trent talks about Johnny and the song

He was so proud of this song, but when he showed it to his family they hated it,because he knew it would send him to peace
Cry as you need to. 70 year old guys cry listening to this. 21 year old hard ass rappers cry when they here this. it is appropriate to feel the emotional power of this.
This song "Hurt" and "It's been a while" by Staind, are my obituary songs.
Also show her zombie by the cranberries. Give her the backstory ahead of time
❤❤❤ Love to you both.
A couple other songs similar to this is monsters by James blunt, the living years by Mike and the mechanics, nothing compares to you by sinead oconner
Great reaction, Thanks for sharing ❤
I will let you down i will make you hurt. Gets me every time. I hurt everyone
Awesome reaction guys.
The woman standing on the stairs was his wife, the woman in the picture I think was his mom.
This was originally a nine inch nails song. Great remake.
Martina McBride doing Concrete Angel and bring the tissues, it's heartbreaking 😢

However, Cash’s rendition added a layer of depth and vulnerability that resonated with listeners on a profound level.
Known to have lived a life full of dangers and chemical abuse, Johnny Cash died in 2003, seven months after the release of his music video for ‘Hurt.’ The music video that has been nominated for an MTV award 7 times has a bit of a story when we consider the life Johnny Cash led for 71 years.😔
Valerie June Carter Cash (June 23, 1929 - May 15, 2003[1]) was an American country singer and songwriter.
Johnny Cash is the greatest self made musician the world has ever seen. Just a man and his guitar.

the woman on the stairs is his wife june carter. she came down the stairs to see him. she wasn't supposed to be there. she died shortly after this and he passed a few months later.
