    This video gives a good feel for how the game will play - components and all. I was skeptical at first, but its complexity is intriguing. Thanks TC!

    Absolutely superb. Really pleased to see you guys having a demo in a quieter area.
    This strikes me as GoT meets Netrunner. Some delightful complexity but without the brutality of GoT. Really excited, especially if the store championship events go down a thematic road.

    Hey Team CovenantI found you through the suggested videos for Legend of the Five Rings. Your videos are very informative and entertaining. It helped me a lot when I was starting to play this game. Now this is my favorite game! I just made a TH-cam channel for Legend of the Five Rings unboxing, content, strategy and other stuff. I am still learning a lot. Thanks for all your help. Please keep it up! Just subbed!

    Looks really good. It's a card game that plays like a board game. The art is fantastic!

  • @cloudstone123
    @cloudstone123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I wasn't wrong when I thought people would complain about all the extra clutter on the board. However, I do like some of the mechanics. It definitely feels more fair to each clan and without favoring one play style over the other. A crane player not just sitting there and building honor? A lion player playing a battle of politics?
    I think it is better to see this as a board game in a card box. It can still be collectible with expansion packs but I feel that would be a better description. Just because it is a CCG does not mean it has to look a lot like Magic The Gathering.

    @ 38:45 Shouldn’t it be 7 to 2 instead of 6 to 2? Since the imperial favor gives a +1

    So how excited are you guys for the game now when you tried it? :)
    I was very hyped when it was first announced, a bit uncertain when I saw all the moving pieces during the reveal articles, but after learning the rules and getting a better understanding of it; I'm back to super hyped! Especially with the way they are handeling competetive play for this one, with clans and players taking the forefront.

      As a player who has played both (many years playing the CCG):
      It *feels* very similar in a big picture sense, with characters being recruited from a dedicated deck attacking provinces and players alternating actions, players gaining and losing honor (with that as a win/loss condition), and courtly intrigue competing against military might.
      There are huge differences, however: the old CCG had dedicated resource cards competing for space in the dynasty deck, far more card types (including cards for the elemental rings that represented yet another victory condition), and more traditional permanent characters. The last is probably the biggest change, as old CCG character cards had no "fate" mechanic ticking down, but characters at losing conflicts died at resolution. This actually ended up leading to a multiplication of complexity, as characters tended to accumulate on the board.
      I'd sum it up by saying that it's "faithful" to the CCG while being distinct. Many of the players from my old CCG group (we played constantly and pretty competitively, travelling to regional tournaments and frequently putting representatives in top 8s) are excited about the LCG, but a few people are downright angry at the changes being so deep and fundamental.

    • @xDIABOx
      @xDIABOx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not even close, the TCG was a tense game about conflict. This is a game about gimmicks, tokens and dials.

    • @clintonwilcox4690
      @clintonwilcox4690 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Despite having a few mechanics in common, it's pretty much like a brand new game. It still seems enjoyable but not nearly as good, to me, as the original L5R was. I'm still looking forward to trying this version out, though.

    • @jacobpruett9204
      @jacobpruett9204 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a TCG vet it looked almost identical up until they started playing. i.e. provinces, two decks, honor counters. Then there were tokens for this and dials for that and tokens for provinces and well you get the picture. I like the idea of LCG's, (if i'm thinking of it right) where you build your decks without the randomness of booster packs but while I loved netrunner, this one seems a bit too overly complicated an adaptation from what was a very complex but elegant game. That may sound contradictory but while complexity can be an exciting and fun element to garnish a lot of uniqueness and originality in deck design this feels less complex and more cluttered if that makes sense.
      I think it's the static resource system that bums me out. While it's super frustrating when you get gold screwed, a variable resource system allows the game to evolve as time goes on. Now it may be due to us only seeing a couple of turns but it seems like a lot of rinse repeat conflicts and actions that seem very stagnant. You only have enough resources to get a couple guys out each turn and not enough to keep them around for long. I'm sure there will be more strategy to it but from what I saw it was like playing with a regular deck of cards. Oh boy I flipped a jack this turn and you only got a 7 so I'll win this round but I can't keep that jack out so I hope I pull another good card next time. Anyway, I'm starting to rant a bit and that means it's time to stop.
      Oh, and for you guys about to flame my comments, understand this is a first impression, the game may turn out great and I'll be happy cause I freaking love L5R. But from this first impression i'm skeptical.

    At 31:01. Steward of law was played from the hand during the dynasty phase. According to the rule book "a player is not permitted to play character or attachment cards from his or her hand" during the dynasty phase. Brad didn't seem to mind.Whats going on?

    • @Noinoi_
      @Noinoi_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was played during the conflict phase, not the dynasty phase. The order is:
      Dynasty (play cards from provinces)
      Draw (dials and drawing)
      Conflict (self-explanatory)
      Fate (removing characters and fate)
      Regroup (unbowing, discarding etc.)

    After watching, I can say on a purely personal level that I will keep with the old version, even though it currently is a “dead” version. But I am at least glad the game is still an active name, and the RPG stays real close to the original lore.

  • @Darksoky6748
    @Darksoky6748 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello there ,a little late question : on the conflict phase, during the actions window , can i play the effect of a character not involved on the actual conflict ( not from provinces not from my hand )?

  • @rasthavas8275
    @rasthavas8275 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    36:15 - Kitsu Spiritcaller cannot be dishonored thanks to Steward of Law ... but wouldn't the rest of Spies at Court (opponent randomly discards 2 cards from hand) still apply? similar to how Steward of Law prevented Kitsu Spiritcaller from being dishonored by Shameful Display during the conflict but did not prevent Steward of Law from being honored.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FFG generally has a "must pay cost to resolve effect" rule. So in the first case, the cost is dishonoring, and since it cannot be paid, the resolution stops. In the second example, the cost was fully paid, so you resolve as much of the effect as possible.

    • @rasthavas8275
      @rasthavas8275 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying! Is that "must pay cost to resolve" concept indicated by the em dash (--) in the card text?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that definitely seems to be the indicator! This is a step up from past games that did not use a separator like that. So nice to see.

    • @RichardDicksondlyrch68
      @RichardDicksondlyrch68 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there's a winner, isn't the conflict over? And therefore the Steward of Law is no longer participating, so its effect doesn't apply?

    • @nznova
      @nznova 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just about to ask the same thing. It seems like the 'after you win' timing would imply the combatants are no longer participating?

  • @TorIverWilhelmsen
    @TorIverWilhelmsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 18:00, shouldn't the defender play actions first?

    • @DerAptrgangr
      @DerAptrgangr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tor Iver Wilhelmsen yes, he should've. Looks like a minor oversight - though I suspect he didn't have any actions he wanted to play, otherwise he hopefully would've said something. But yes, you are correct.

  • @Sannosama
    @Sannosama 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shouldn't Zach have lost the first Political Province Attack and not have gotten that first Ring? Wasn't his Story Teller reduced back to a 4 against a Province strength of 5?
    Or do you get the Ring if you win the conflict whether or not you succeed in breaking the province?

  • @leehodgson1969
    @leehodgson1969 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks like lots going on . Im hoping FFG puts up one of their nice , polished tutorial videos like Conquest and Netrunner . This looks like I may do one core set to play and disguard the other packs ... but I have thought that about most LCG's...sigh

  • @Hypoo
    @Hypoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am concerned that I am gonna love playing this game but I will suck at it.
    Great video however! I like a lot of the gamedesign choices made here, like the incentives of choosing first and second player, and the gaining of fate from passing. And that static income from your stronghold is so much nicer, avoiding the old "I have no mana cause no lands were drawn" problem from MtG.

    At 17:10 Steven declared military conflict on Rally to the Cause. It states that you can switch the type of conflict not element. Wouldn't that change it to political not military just couldn't change the element of the ring itself?

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - the conflict type would switch but the ring type stays the same.

  • @ant82790

    • @teamcovenant

      Yes! Not many choices to make - so you basically put your Clan cards with all of the neutral cards, and then choose a few to splash from another clan.

    I have a question: when you played "outwit", it has a fate value of 1; does that mean you need to pay the cost first during the conflict phase, or can you play as many actions as you want for free?

    So this is the game FFG is turning into digital card game? or the lotro?
    this looks as interesting as android netrunner video i watched.. didn't even know more complex card games existed besides magic/hs/eternal and all those rng rock-paper-scissor games...
    edit : after watching half an hour, i noticed how good quality the art work on the cards are :-)

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FFG is creating a LotR's Digital LCG. L5R is very nuanced, with some poker elements like bluffing and bidding against your opponent. It is a great game!

    • @teamcovenant

      This is a new version of L5R, so all of the old CCG cards are not compatible! It just started, though, so a good time to jump in. Check out our new player guide here: teamcovenant.com/legend-five-rings-l5r-lcg/learning-l5r-guide-new-players

    So I've never learned to play this game, but I have some old product like all the Drums of War clan decks, and the Spider clan deck from Samurai Edition... is it compatible with this new core-set? Because as a card-game player having different backs is typically cheating??

    • @DerAptrgangr
      @DerAptrgangr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Palmer unfortunately not. Not only are they different backs, but the rulesets are very incompatible. This version is a totally new game.

    Do you guys think that FFG will ever pick up any other extinct CCGs and turn them into LCGs? I would love to see a Battletech LCG or a 7th Sea LCG, Harry Potter LCG and dare I say, a doomtown LCG? I think these older games that have followings would make a great IP to buy or an IP to license.

    • @MrTaylork1

      Cody Weaver Doomtown already was an LCG. It already lived out its lifespan and was cancelled.

    I want to love this game, and I hope I do when I eventually play. I love the theme, and the card art is outstanding. But it seems to me there are too many widgets and tokens and complications that could keep this game from catching on. I hope I'm wrong.

    • @144DVT
      @144DVT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use dice for honor and fate in place of their tokens. Saves time and less clutter. I'm not a fan of lots of tokens, but this game really only needs the ring ones and a few dice.

    • @xDIABOx
      @xDIABOx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, NintenDad, you're not wrong. This game is filled with gimmicks to cover for the complex and tense game original L5R was. So you'll have the typicall back and forth tokens and pieces and a dial to cover up a bad game based on horrible decisions that will drown in a couple of years.

    • @matchstick21
      @matchstick21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you'll find your wrong. I haven't tried it yet either, but if something like this would have too many gizmos to gain momentum, I doubt Netrunner would have taken off either. It has two distinct sets of gameplay mechanics, on top of the many different tokens and usages thereof like tags, ghost credits, brain damage, psi games, etc. However, it's still very popular. I'm hopeful, and with what seems like a large chunk of the existing playerbase from old L5R on board it should have a strong start.

    • @Blackopist1
      @Blackopist1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is that netrunner does all this stuff, but the only things that are necessary are the credits. I mean, tags are used quite often, but stuff like bad publicity and brain damage do not get used that much, and are not such a core aspect of the gameplay. Non the less, I tried a game of it online, and I loved it! Love the card art and everything about it, even the fate system is nice. I might not have ever played the original L5R, but I feel like this game is good and will have a future. If I could, I would buy ANR instead but you need like 1k$ to have a full set, so that you can keep up with the others. However, being a student, I prefer investing in this one instead.

    • @xDIABOx
      @xDIABOx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dimitris Olympiakos, so you say that if you could you would play the better game but instead you'll choose to play the worst game because of money... okay, that's what I call throwing money out of the window!! Because in a couple of years A:NR will remain solid because it's built over a solid game design (PhD Richard Garfield) and in a couple of years New5R will be a fading fad, cannibalizing over AGOT to just stay alive.
      But it's your money, your choice man! You're surelly negleting the fact A:NR had a "reset" and a new Core Set that can potentially bring new players into the game... but follow the fad! FFG approves! ;)

  • @ChristopherLMunoz
    @ChristopherLMunoz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did they forget to take and lose one honor at 20min in ?
    36min wouldn't Spies at Court still be able to be played, just not dishonor the friendly but still discard 2 cards at random from opponents hand? Or it can't be played because of the - (dash) symbol symbolize that the first part of this text needs to happen to be able to be played?

    • @qzxerty
      @qzxerty 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Munoz yup i was thinking the same. The game designer doesn't seem that confident with the rules.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct that the unopposed Honor was missed. Apologies!
      Spies At Court cannot be played because its cost cannot be paid. You MUST dishonor a character to gain the effect, and Steward of Law does not allow characters to be dishonored.

      @Noinoi_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct.

    • @elstob
      @elstob 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, but his honoured ability gives all other characters Sincere, so he should have actually drawn 2 (1 for the Courtier, 1 for the Scout) as his characters left play. Or just taken the 1 and dishonoured the opponent as he pondered.

      No, please don't!! I don't want the travesty they did with L5R being done to VTES!! Better leave it that way!

    • @DrugsForRobots
      @DrugsForRobots 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if you think L5R LCG is too clunky or inelegant, haven't FFG proven themselves with their other LCGs? Netrunner, Call of Cthulhu, GoT, Warhammer?
      I want to believe they can do Vampire justice.

    • @xDIABOx
      @xDIABOx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrugsForRobots Ehrm... no!!
      Star Wars LCG, fail. Least played LCG.
      CoC LCG, failed. Ended because lack of interest.
      WH Conquest, failed. Ended due to licenses but was already in decline, both in sales and player numbers.
      AGOT 2, failing. Declining interest and player pool dropping.
      WH Invasion, failed. Game was silly and had internal problems since day 1. Only had interest in Germany and Poland.
      The only solid LCG are LOTR and now AH LCG and Android Netrunner.
      And why ANR is stable all these years?! Because due to their own choosing or license restrictions as I also heard they maintained the original design, which was solid on its own. And solid games pass the test of time, as Magic is doing, a game designed by the same head of ANR and VTES.
      This is the problem of this game, L5R. Too many differences from the original, too many similarities to other FFG games (AGOT).
      VTES, if done like ANR was, it could work. But with the actual design team for xCG I don't have high hopes.

      The only thing that's different about New5R is all the bad baggage of Old5R (resource management, Ring inclusion, etc).
      You can be a grumpy grognard if you want, but it looks like they did a great job at keeping the ascetic of the old game in the new.

  • @UnfortunateFreakNo1

    So... are these games essentially just 3 rounds long?

    • @TorIverWilhelmsen
      @TorIverWilhelmsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they stopped after two rounds here, but neither were close to either 0 (lose) or 20 (win) honor.

    • @UnfortunateFreakNo1
      @UnfortunateFreakNo1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is another win condition though, breaking the main province. Both of them have 2 provinces broken already and each need to break 1 more province to be allowed to attack the main one. It looks like breaking two provinces in a single turn is completely doable and if you don't manage to then you are behind.

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have found that you are aiming to break one province per turn, so games are generally lasting 4-5 turns.

    So why is it that honor is only lost once for someone not defending? Other rules were not used throughout the video as well. I am thinking that we need a new how to in order to fully understand how and why the rules work this way.

    • @artstsym
      @artstsym 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Looks like a simple mistake. It's an easy to forget rule. If an attacker wins a conflict with no defensive characters involved (ready or bowed), the conflict is unopposed and the defender loses 1 honor.

  • @bose5160
    @bose5160 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I played L5R years ago. I enjoyed it at times, but table glut would take over and the game would always end up with one big battle that decided everything. I feel Netrunner was far more elegant before it got the FFG faction treatment. I think FFG's licensing money would have been better spent buying VtES as others have suggested. Of course they probably would have messed that one up as well with a rules re-write instead of a straight up rerelease(preferably with the exact same rule set and card backs....)

  • @hughaldous5195
    @hughaldous5195 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    At around the 20min mark the left hand player didnt defend, bowed the attacker. However they didnt lose honour for not defending? Ie: 11 h to 10 h.
    ???

    • @teamcovenant
      @teamcovenant  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      A bowed attacker is 0 Skill, which means the attack was completely nullified. A player only loses honor when a "successful" attack is unopposed.

    what the hell is wrong with you millennials? So impatient! Gees, we played games that took 5 hours just to set up. A turn could take hours and the games could take months to resolve becasue they were so miticulous. Now, the game has to be over in 30 minutes or you're all twitching with anxiety! wtf Get your noses out of your phones and play some real games!

    • @jacobpruett9204
      @jacobpruett9204 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well as a non-millennial I would say because it's a card game. When I break out a board game I expect to invest some serious time to setup and play and even calculating the winner if need be. That's part of the charm of board games, but with card games, I feel like the time invested is in building the deck but the actual game should go fairly quickly. Which seems natural in a card game where you just scoop your cards, shuffle and reset.

    • @maxheel

    This games looks like something that would be made by a guy who looks exactly like the guy who made it, and would be played by a men who looks exactly like the guy who made it. This is first-world cultural appropriation and (possibly worse) utter, fiddly garbage. There are a dozen other games to play besides this one and much less complicated and costly. After all the bad natural disasters and tragedies this year, why would an individual voluntarily assault their brains with this hobbyist's nightmare in 2017. Has there not been enough trauma in our lives this year that people are actually excited about this game being put out by this company to milk our teats for every nickle we have through this suckling badger of a business model? Fuck.

    Too bad they (FFG) ruined such an unique and good game... I was planning a GenCon trip until FFG announced this version of Thrones of Rokugan and totally lost the interest I had in this game.
    I wasn't so loyal on the original L5R because of it's Collectible aspect and the porting to the Living aspect of it made such a huge boost in my gaming interests for 2k17, but then they showed this... this port of game, a lame game, filled with dials and gimmicks and tokens... too bad for my Rokugan itch but good for my wallet.
    At least FFG announced two good boardgames this year.

      Why are you making the same comment in multiple areas of the video? Keep using the word gimmick over and over again isn't going to make it true.
      One area this game should be a huge improvement over the original is the reduction in having a runaway player. If a rush deck was able to bust a province or two early the game was basically over. Here, both players should be in the game right up to the end.
      The old being gold screwed/flooded should be no more also.
      The game looks a lot more tactical and interactive over the original too. I played the original and am really excited to play with the changes they made.

      Official rules only exist for 1 v 1, but the wording on the cards makes it seem like a multiplayer variant is possible.
