I've watched a handful of TI4 instructional videos. They've all been good, but this is something else. The thought and care that went into the examples are really impressive. I feel like I've just downloaded a "Matrix" training cartridge. "I know Twilight Imperium. Whoa."
And several years later, I still use this video everytime I'm hosting a game, both for the new players, and for the not-new as a quick refresher. I send it out a couple of days before the game as well. :)
I just want to take a moment to recognize the attention to detail here. Note the opening shot mirroring the original video, and 32 minutes length (again a mirror). Note the precise placement of each infantry flag at 2:00. From the scale of the entire channel down to the scale of each component on the table, every choice is carefully considered. Most of those careful choices are invisible to the viewer, because they are paring away what was non-essential; however their effort is felt and experienced in the results. This is art, and it is appreciated. Thanks, Shea.
Fourth edition has yet to take more than 6 hours for us, even with 5 new people. As long as someone is the turn pusher (says "it's your turn" every 2 minutes for 6 hours straight), you're fine.
Or you can just be content not to finish, the joy of the game is playing, not finishing in my opinion. But games I've played have taken long as people do a lot of negotiating which takes lots of time, and rushing this takes away from the game I think.
I'm a dad of 5 boys ages 9,11,13,13,14. The 11 and one of the 13s are both autistic and with some patience, I managed to teach all of them. Worked with the 13 and 14 plus my wife on game 1. Then, the other 13 and the 9. Lastly, I taught the 11 his autism is a bit worse due to him also being rather hyper. We have owned TI4 and PoK for 5ish years and love the game. After removing the "snake women" due to the pictures being inappropriate, I have also taught it to most of our church's boys' youth. I've had 3 player games last as little as 3.5hours but up to 8. But the 8 player games always run close to 15+ hours. Every single kid I have played with has managed to win at least one game .over the years. Most of the church youth are now 19-20 and still ask for me to host a TI night. And my boys are now 14,16,18,18,19. I have one other child he just turned 7 and has been saying "I'm popping tech" since he was 4. This is no joke the best boardgame out there.
You and your boys are living the dream. I wish someone had introduced me and my brothers to this game when we were kids. Best boardgame ever, without question.
This was just the first result I found looking for quick intro on this game, and I just had to compliment you, it was so easy to listen to what you had to say and the video was highly entertaining & informative. I wasn't expecting to find such a high quality video when I came into this.
EXCELLENT! The last video was probably the only thing that got some people I played with into the game. They never would have even tried without it. Thanks man.
Just a heads up, at about 23:45 when you say that you can't use the secondary of Construction on an activated system, this contradicts the Rules References which states in section 23.3: "If he already has a command token in that system, the spent token is returned to his reinforcements instead." So you can still use the ability, but you don't "double activate" the system.
Well, I was hoping the video would be up for at least 24 hours before someone notices a mistake, but you are quite right. Not sure how I mixed that one up, but good eye. Added a correction to the video, so hopefully it doesn't confuse things too much. Thanks!
Your correction is a bit confusing as you say you "cannot build" this is still true (cannot use production. Might be better phrased as you may still "place a spacedock or PDS". At least I was confused at first =)
I have watch this video about 8 times over the last 3 years. A great reminder just before a TI4 session. I always send it to my newbie friends. Thx a lot for the video. It's incredibly useful :)

I watched this and skimmed the rules intro book, worried that I would waste time asking dumb questions about the game, bog it down, and make it no fun... but there was only one time we got surprised by something in the game, it was entirely inconsequential, and I totally got the game flow down pat. Great video and I've signed up for the Patreon.

Thank you so much for the teach. I played TI4 for the first time today, and this video was super helpful for getting started!! We had a blast too!! Played for almost 9 hrs and will finish with a second session next week.
All your videos are great, but your TI videos in particular have been super useful. I don't even bother teaching TI anymore (partially because it's already going to be a super long day and partially because nobody wants to listen to me talk that long). Instead, I send out links to the rulebooks and your videos a couple weeks in advance. In my opinion, says a lot about your videos that I trust them enough to just send them out for a game this big instead of just doing so the teaching myself.

I sent this to anyone I play with as a tutorial, and watch it myself every time I play after a while to refresh my memory :)

I also have played this in only a couple hours. 3 hours on the short side, 5-6 on the long side. That said, 6 players takes longer than 4. Eating dinner mid game makes it take longer. I do need to go look up the capacity / transport rules. I always thought, if you lost the ships that were 'carrying' ground forces, the ground forces were lost, regardless of other in system capacity.
Just send you a translation of the subtitles to Spanish (I actually sent it like 15 times, but I think the last one is more accurate haha). Hope it helps, cause your tutorial is great and I didn't found something as good in my native language. Keep the great work!
At 21:00, when he said "I swear to God if those are in your mouth I am going to kill you" I had coincidentally just put replacement earphone buds into my mouth 5 seconds before. I almost had a heart attack
I played 3rd edition one time six years ago and now some friends and I finally bought it. So excited. I was hooked on the thrill of hat one game. I played it one, single time and I loved it
This seems like a more complex (in a good way) Axis and Allies IN SPACE. especially with the ship that flips over when it takes damage, and the combat system in general
Flipping a ship over to damaged/crippled status is a very old thing that goes back to Avalon Hill games like Victory in the Pacific and War in the Atlantic.
It’s got more sides than A&A The combat is similar, but TI takes a bunch of the best mechanics from various games and puts them into one cohesive unit.
I can definitely tell you have gotten better at these. I finally got to play 3rd Edition the other day and got to use your first video to help learn, and it was great. I am eagerly awaiting my chance to try 4th Edition. Keep up the good work guys!
So I played a 5 player game last night, we only got through 1 full rounds as I was learning. This video is fantastic if you've already played a little bit. Don't be afraid to dive in, especially if you are playing with good teaching players. Then come watch this!!!!!!
For PRODUCTION secondary it says you can take an existing token off of the system if you have one...then put it in your reinforcements..then you can do the secondary ( if you want)...its a good game :) good video :)
Great video, guys! TI 3 is my all-time favourite boardgame, but I only got it a few years ago, so the idea of ponying up another bjillion dollars for this shiny new edition hurts my heart. Still, the improvements made to the ship upgrades & technologies are WICKED.
There are definitely reasons for and against buying the new version, so I get why you're struggling. The way I figure it, if you still like and play 3rd edition, you probably don't need 4th. However, if you aren't playing 3rd anymore and want a good reason to get back into it, 4th might be a good buy. And maybe you get the friends you play with to all chip in and help lower the cost.
Hello, my group use to play "expert" games like Eclipse, TFMars, SWRebellion, Beyond the Sun etc. One bought TI4 but even if we can be 6 players for 4 hours max sometimes or 2 players for 6 hours, we can't manage to be 6 players for a full day. This is crazy! Or maybe when we get retired? But after many efforts we managed to block a full day at 4 players (only) 2 months in advance for this 14th of july. I watch this (great) video in English which is good but not sure I catch everything and that we will manage to be able to play in 2 days lol! To be said: Our game is in French but my friends do not speak English so can't watch any video before the game. ARG!
Played this game a year ago and watched this video before that, got invited to play again tomorrow and figured I'd give the video another watch lol. Most of it sounds vaguely familiar...?
About to play for the first time, (probably for real this time) thanks for making this vid. I think that if you move the timestamp to the start of the line, yotube will automatically add chapters to jump to.
From my super limited experience playing this game once: get the tech that gives you 2 action cards instead of one per turn. I did not get it and it really reduced my options in the game.
Basically always ask yourself, will this give me Vpoints. Action cards can be very good, but Neural Motivator is not a must have. (If you're planning on green it's generally a nice choice though).
I played TI3 and now TI4 for almost 20 years. And still everytime a new player joins us this is the mandatory learning video for them. Great video 👍

In rules reference 88.3, "of one unit in his home system" should instead read "of one of his space docks in his home system" to match the secondary ability of the strategy card.
Technology Cards
Hyper Metabolism
This card should say, "During the status phase, gain 3 command tokens instead of 2." (And yes, that phrasing is compatible with Federation of Sol's ability.)
(Note: Art P. has uploaded a fixed Hyper Metabolism that you can print out and insert in a sleeve or glue over the original.)boardgamegeek.com/filepage/158878/hyper-metabolism-fixed-and-ready-print
FINALLY, after watching like 6 videos, someone explains what a PDS is: 13:24
Haha, yeah. They spell it out in TI3, so maybe the designers thought everyone would just know? Figured I'd include it just in case.
A video so good, I now feel compelled not only to buy the game but to clone some friends as well.
I recommend both, though the cloning process is a bit expensive. Then again, so is TI4 so...
I'm playing Twilight Imperium for the first time on the weekend. I've watched this video twice. This video is great, and I'm hyped.
Awesome! Hope it goes/went well!
Have watched this vid like 6 times over the years... and Nick always gets me =D
Amazing as always, been waiting for this for so long thank you!
Hey, with Prophecy of Kings. It's it time to revisit this?
That's what people keep asking. Might just...
@@RTFM let me know if I can help. I've got an unofficial discord of 5k hoping it's true!
@@philroi2672 Oh my! Well I'm going to have to put it to my Patreon backers, who get to decide what I teach, but I think they'll be just as interested in this as everyone else, so I'd give it good odds.
This tutorial is the one that helped me actually learn how to play. Good work guys and thanks.
Hey, glad I could help!
Is that a reference pear? Aww yeah!
Just send you a translation of the subtitles to Spanish (I actually sent it like 15 times, but I think the last one is more accurate haha). Hope it helps, cause your tutorial is great and I didn't found something as good in my native language. Keep the great work!
Thank you so much! And thanks for letting me know. TH-cam doesn't tell me when people are working on these things and I always forget to check.
I'm glad it helps!
@RTFM Just made a few changes/corrections. I view the video again and i found a couple of mistakes. I already sent it for revision. Sorry about that.
At 21:00, when he said "I swear to God if those are in your mouth I am going to kill you" I had coincidentally just put replacement earphone buds into my mouth 5 seconds before. I almost had a heart attack
XD
From 2021 and that Neil Patrick Harris joke has paid off!!!
I played 3rd edition one time six years ago and now some friends and I finally bought it. So excited. I was hooked on the thrill of hat one game. I played it one, single time and I loved it
Love the rhythm and humor in this great tutorial
Amazing tutorial RTFM, as ever!
I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of TI4 this Christmas!
Not all heroes wear capes. Great job! Thank you!
My box arrived and my God I didnt realize how beautiful this game really is... Thank you for teaching me RTFM!
It's so pretty! Glad I could help.
This seems like a more complex (in a good way) Axis and Allies IN SPACE. especially with the ship that flips over when it takes damage, and the combat system in general
I haven't actually had the chance to play Axis and Allies, but I can highly recommend Twilight Imperium.
Flipping a ship over to damaged/crippled status is a very old thing that goes back to Avalon Hill games like Victory in the Pacific and War in the Atlantic.
It’s got more sides than A&A
The combat is similar, but TI takes a bunch of the best mechanics from various games and puts them into one cohesive unit.
Watched this, just tried to play for 6ish hours with a friend group, now I'm back to rewatch and learn all the parts we were screwing up
That sounds about right for this game. I definitely took a couple games before I was playing it (mostly) right.
Thank you for this! Just bought TI4 like four days ago and im planing to play it this tuesday!
A hug from Chile! :D
There is a slight rules clarification you may want to make. You *can* spend trade goods as influence during the Agenda phase, just not as votes.
Thanks for making this. Just getting into the game now and this will be great for our group.
I just got this game. Goodbye weekends! Also, it was very funny how all the other players were the same guy.
Watched the video, played the game, watched it again to see what we did wrong
great video
Thanks! And hey, thanks for giving me a 2nd view XD
Standard Reference Pear! Oh and an excellent video tutorial! Thank you very much for making this!
I can definitely tell you have gotten better at these. I finally got to play 3rd Edition the other day and got to use your first video to help learn, and it was great. I am eagerly awaiting my chance to try 4th Edition. Keep up the good work guys!
Game three, realized we’ve done combat wrong the whole time, and I’m here double checking pds lol
Oh no! Honestly though, I hear people say that all the time. Getting a rule wrong is classic TI, really.
Lol, I asked about a TI4 video like the last one just the other day over on Reddit! Thanks! :D
Going to play an in person game this Saturday for the first time in years. So refreshing myself on the rules.
i love all of your tutorial videos so much. you make it fun to learn rules
Thanks!
Great video. This is well produced, entertaining, and really approachable. Well done!
Thank you!
So I played a 5 player game last night, we only got through 1 full rounds as I was learning. This video is fantastic if you've already played a little bit. Don't be afraid to dive in, especially if you are playing with good teaching players. Then come watch this!!!!!!
So excited about playing this later this month (been playing the 3rd Edition for years). Also, nice 'Standard Reference Pear' shirt 😁👍
Haha, thanks!
For PRODUCTION secondary it says you can take an existing token off of the system if you have one...then put it in your reinforcements..then you can do the secondary ( if you want)...its a good game :) good video :)
Best TI video out there....Great work. Thanks
Nice work, guys, really great overview
Thanks!
ARG!
Glad you were able to finally try it out at least! How did it go?
Played this game a year ago and watched this video before that, got invited to play again tomorrow and figured I'd give the video another watch lol. Most of it sounds vaguely familiar...?
You are really, really good at this.
Thanks!
This is my go to video for explaining TI.
Thanks!
And now we are looking forward to the new expansion for 4th.and your video for it
Hopefully. I tend to let my Patreon backers choose what I teach, though I might just have to throw that expansion in the mix anyway...we'll see.
Wow, your production value has really gone up. Good job!
About to play for the first time, (probably for real this time) thanks for making this vid.
I think that if you move the timestamp to the start of the line, yotube will automatically add chapters to jump to.
Their system gets confused when you have other timestamps in the description, which I do for the corrections. I might give it a shot though.
Awesome work, guys. Todays our first game. Thanks for the great breakdown!
No problem! Glad I could help.
