Star Wars LCG Tutorial and FAQ

- An easy-to-follow overview of FFG's Star Wars LCG. A truly amazing game.
Correction: Steven (the left player) interchangeably uses 'Force' and 'Focus' when talking about FOCUSING a character to attack. The appropriate term for this is to Focus a character, not force them.

Your support keeps us going! Thank you so much for watching, sharing, and purchasing. We're consistently humbled.
Sure, this video is 11 years old... and I know I have seen it before. However, I found myself back here watching again to review rules since Star Wars Unlimited was released. I am confident that this game (LCG) is a better game. Anyways, thanks again for doing this video. Good stuff, guys!
FFG should hire you guys to do their demos. Yours are far superior, keep up the good work.
Excellent tutorials. Whomever does your visual aids, like the floating cards and such, needs a raise - they are truly top notch and make your videos a cut above.
A couple questions: I know the core set comes with cards for two players, is a set and one of each force pack enough for two players to enjoy the game fully or does each player need his own copy? Can you play with more than two players and how does it scale/play in this way?
Again, amazing video.
The amount of production quality this channel has never ceases to amaze me. Awesome job guys!
Its on the verge of 2019, and thankfully I can happily say the Team Covenant hair styles have improved massively.
Haha! Thank you!
@@teamcovenant Although Zach is creeping slowly back these days ;)
Wow, is this the same Steven??? Seems like he may be the "Bizzaro" Steven. Great video, love the CGI work. You guys did a great job.
just got the core set and an expansion. This was the first video that really made it easy for me to understand the game. Great job guys, I enjoyed it!
Steven Gioe Great to hear! Enjoy the game!
Yes, that was fun to watch and answered a bunch of questions!
you guys are great! I drove all the way to Tulsa just to visit your store and buy some goodies, a 1.5 hour trip. ty so much for all you do and you have a great store!
I just bought the core set to play with my 11-year-old son. We are slowly figuring out gameplay and all of the idiosyncrasies to the rules. Your video was very helpful. While the length of the video appeared long at first glance, it was packed with a lot of good information and was very much worth the time. Very nice job!
+Norton Lam Thank you Norton!
Thank you gentlemen -- this really helped me get an intro to the game. Whoever is doing your graphics is...very impressive. Nicely done. Easy to follow. I wish you the best in your business. I will be back for more.
energy pull Thank you!
Wow guys, very impressed with the video. Good camera work, graphics, content, everything. BAM!!!
I'm mostly impressed with how you conduct yourselves in an intelligent, articulate, and classy way.
As someone who is just learning about the game, and deciding if I want to invest in it, this video was incredibly helpful. It gave me all the info I needed.
Cheers from Utah!
Thanks guys for a great tutorial. I finally get how this game works. On the flip side curse you for getting me to buy into another LCG. (It's your fault I'm now buying my way through the AGoT LCG packs as well as encouraging my obsession with Netrunner) Please stop producing solid tutorial and tournament videos cause you're costing me a fortune.
This game is in the mail and the wait is killing me. I wish it would just get here already! great vids guys. keep it up!
Great work you two. The production quality on this was very strong and the conversational and informed demo really brought the rules to life for me!
Just picked up this game on a whim. Really excellent explanations of a game ruleset that was pretty intimidating from the rulebook and not much less so after viewing the FFG tutorial.
Much Appreciated!
+Karl Paulsen Thank you Karl! So glad to hear it!
Great video~
Because the pistol and blast icon in Yoda's power are in parentheses, this indicates that he gets white icons for each attached enhancement not black ones suggested in the video.
The cgi and video are so well done! We are highly enjoying it! 😃
A very clear and informative video, well done! One minor remark though: the rulebook states that you have to select Objectives before drawing your starting hand. Which one is the correct way? Like I said, it's something minor, so I guess if both players agree to draw before selecting objectives, it shouldn't be a big deal.
This is the best, most riveting and informative demo video I've ever seen. Thank you for this.
You can add shield tokens to objectives or units using the Shielding ability or with an Event card. Those shield tokens remain on those cards until you sacrifice them to prevent 1 damage to that card or until your next refresh phase--whichever comes first.
Thank you for your answer. I knew this rule, though. What i meant was if the Y-Wing was striking 2 different objectives (which obviously doesnt makes any sense since it would still be attacking the same objective after one focus token was removed). I was confused back then.
Thanks a lot for the tutorial guys! I watched it quite a while ago and I have been waiting for the game to arrive to my store for like ages. Today it finally arrived! Man I have to watch the tutorial again because I have already forgotten how everything goes haha.
Another little thing with what you state there, if you do something that allows you to strike twice you would do 2 times 2 dmg, whether opposed or not. Unopposed dmg is not part of the strike, but rather a bonus for not being opposed when the battle ends. The strike itself doesn't receive any bonus for being unopposed.
Great tutorial gents, love the graphics, helps us visual learners to understand the game better. Though there were moments where it dragged and the light side player constantly rocking back and forth into frame was a bit annoying, I have to say I honestly found it full of useful knowledge on how to play and I forwarded the video to my friends who want to play as well. All the best, and I cant wait to see what you do next.
Wow first time with this channel. I was pretty blown away by all the editing and effects and on top of that you guys are really great at explaining the game. Very well done! Looking forward to more stuff
Great tutorial, guys. I think it's 10x better than the FFG tutorial. Keep up the great work. These tutorials are top shelf.
Thank you gentlemen for the incredible video. You all did an amazing job with the organized, very, very professional video. It has been really helpful. The guy playing the light side really rocks. Back and forth and back and forth. Just kidding. Seriously I appreciate the hard work and you all are really talented with how well you think through your production to make it smooth and organized.
Dan Duelm Thanks so much Dan! Glad you enjoyed!
Nice demo. I just got introduced to the game the other day. Maybe things take awhile to get down to New Zealand. I will definitely be checking out your other videos. Great job!
Great tutorial - really loving this game so far. Fairly easy transition after a year of playing AGOT.
There's some really impressive video editing here. I prefer the style in your most recent Netrunner matches, shows off the exact effects of the card a bit easier, but damn if this style doesn't look really cool!
Yeah, I would love to see something similar with the floating cards during battles in the Netrunner videos during runs, for example.
great explanation of the game, i just found the game within the last week or so on Lackeyccg program and was wondering how to play it, so many thanks guys
First of all - great video, very informative, great production quality. Keep it up guys and be sure to make more from SWLCG!
Another thing: Sorry about the nitpicking, but Steven keeps calling Focus Tokens "Force Tokens". It's easy to confuse them with Force Icons, which are different things entirely.
Thanks for the tutorial, took the grind out of our first couple of games. I really enjoyed this game.
Just heard the forcecast fantasy flight interview! I'll be purchasing this game ASAP. There is also a local tourney coming up!
great video zack and steven. i want to know how many core set should i get to start playing this game
Thank you for the clarification. I hope there will be some previews about Edge of Darkness and Battle of Hoth soon
When I was in Tulsa I got to learn this & play with Stephen. Great & patent teacher. Now I just need to find some other people in my area who want to play. Kinda makes me wish I lived in Tulsa (...no, not really).
You know you wish you lived here, Chris :)
This game just arrived today and i just finisned playing it, its TOTALLY AWESOME AND FEELS LIKE STAR WARS!
This is the shortest, most comprehensive tutorial I found for this game. And the most fun to watch. Enough to make me subscribe and watch more of your vids. Keep up the good work. Where are you guys based? And do you do this for fun or do you have a shop?
Thank you! Great to hear. We have a store in Tulsa, OK. Started online 8 years ago! There are some olllllllldddddd videos on here.
I would have liked to have seen some more of the engagement resolution. Specifically, I would have liked to have seen how the icons are resolved for the offense AND the defense, as this is something that I was playing wrong in my first couple of games.
Great video guys you should do more tutorial videos for other games, maybe a agot one too. Would love to see Star Wars tournament videos too.
Video looks really good. Love to see those overlays in tournament videos.
Hehe, I think the mistakes we made on our first play were a lot worse than that one. Granted, we only watched the FFG video first (as they suggested with the big square sheet that came with the box). So we didn't take turns during combat (we let one player go first with all character, then the other player) and we didn't do the 'skip first refresh phase for LS' either. So nevermind that tiny error, I learned a lot from your video. :)
Selecting the starting Objectives actually happens before you draw your starting hand, then revealed after, according to the rulebook
When you destroy an objective as the dark side, the death star dial immediately goes up 1 for every objective you've destroyed. The dial going up at the start of the turn happens as normal during the balance phase.
Thanks VERY much for this tutorial! I just bought this game yesterday for my wife and myself and we literally bumbled through a game to the point that she had lost interest. This video explained things perfectly and I can't wait to play it again, so many things we did wrong!
Question: For the DS, if you capture LS objectives you turn the point counter 1 for very objective on your turn. Does this stack with the normal +1 on the DS turn as well as the bonus if the DS has more force also?
Very informative video. While the FFG one is effective it breezed through the mechanics a little too quickly. Your guys complete playthrough makes the mechanics much easier to understand.
The focus token is meant to represent a reticle (like looking down a gun scope). Hence, the card is "focusing" on what ever it happens to be doing (granting resources, acttacking, etc.)... Or, at least, that's my take on it =P
Best Part: 21:15m Quoting:
- It's a very unlucrative earning for me.
- That's cause it took a lot to get all "palpatino". Exploited early, now hmmm fading
into the distance
- You can said that.
- ... into nothingness...
- We will see about that! (grin)
Great video, very nice mood : )
Love the graphics overlays. Nice touch.
Correction: The icons on Yoda's card that give him 1 unit damage and 1 objective damage are only active when you WIN the edge battle. Icons with the [brackets] around it are considered white. Not black. (Official rule book, page 21.)
Years later (after picking up a cheap used set) this is a good intro video, aside from Steven's comfort rocking and his looking-on-drugs daze, haha.
A sign of things to come haha
You should add an Errata section because I've only watched about 10 minutes and there are some mistakes (besides the one you guys have mentioned in the description) that could confuse new players. You choose objectives before drawing your hand, and the LS doesn't skip their refresh phase entirely, just the part where you remove the focus tokens.
I have 2 more questions:
1. In an engagement, if the objective gets destroyed after the edge battle by "Target of Opportunity", is there still an engagement?
2. In an engagement, when a unit has no combat icons to strike with (due to an lost edge battle for example), has this unit to strike with nothing and get a focus token for doin nothing?
Really great stuff guys, the production is top notch...
Thanks so much!
Just bought this game and was confused but this video really helps. I just need some time at the table.
T Hollins Great to hear! Table time makes all the difference!
This is a great video to show how to play the game. Are you going to do a "how to" video for the 2v2 game?
Thanks for the video, guys. I was not "getting it" and this video helped clear up some things.
This review made it so easy to understand the game. Thank you!
@RyZombie619 I think I understand your question, once the card is played it stays in play you do not have to pay any type of "upkeep" cost. The card will remain in your play area until it is destroyed or sacrificed etc.
Its 2020 and I still like this game. But I want to try something I hope people can help me with. I want to build three "duel sets", each based on the big battles in the movies (battle of yavin, battle of hoth, and the final battle of endor). I'd love to see this done, please help me make it a reality!
awesome tutorial. Thinking of picking this up. Just gotta convince some buds of mine to do the same.
Love the visual aids in there, helped make it super clear. Great video! Cheers
Please put up more matches this was epic and informative!
Well done! You guys really need to do the same type of video or Android Netrunner as well
Awesome video guys I like how you explain the differences in the game to your standard TCG it is really nice as a vet. Any chance we will see some gameplay similar to the AGOT games you post weekly? Thanks
Ah ok I get what ya mean. Well it's possible to attack two different locations with one unit, just have to remove the focus token from it between the combats, Leia can do this for your whole field to give some pretty silly turns. Either way it's good to see people playing and enjoying the game.
Great Vid!! I am curious as to if you guys will be doing batreps for this game as well?
Awesome, seems like u guys spent a lot of time on this tutorial!
Hey guys. I probably have watched all of your Star Wars LCG Videos and i absolutely loved them. There is still one question that remained after this video. You didnt explain shield tokens at all. If i have a shield token on a unit, lets say an Y-Wing, and i am attacking. Am i allowed to remove the shield token to prevent that a focus token is beeing put on my Y-Wing so i can strike again? This is a pretty important question because a Y-Wing could do 2 times 3 objective damage when unopposed.
Is there a complete manual online with the explanation of all the powers and ability of EVERY card? Also the expansions cards!
one thing would to add would be a quick run down on deck building since it is unlike other games.
Great tutorial, although I would like to see the game finished. I am also waiting for a Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game tutorial, or even better a complete playthrough.
If im not mistaken, i believe you reshuffle your objectives after selecting three, idk i might be wrong, i'll double check
hey I had a question? In the second light turn yoda attacks Palpatine. Palpetine gets initiative. But yoda has a black place a focus token on his card. Doesn't he get to use that power after Palpetine has attacked? Or can't he use it because Palpetine put a focus token on him in his attack?
Did all of these cards come with one core set and should I buy the add on sets(like Desolation of Hoth)
Great video. I'm learning before I buy and I love it! Do you know where I can buy a core set?
bought the core and Edge of Darkness after the wife said she would play it instead of Netrunner. Great learning tutorial chaps. Will she sit through this? Fingers crossed.
Alan Polak We are hopeful!
I was also unsure if your character attack icons had to be used in the order which is printed on the card, or could you choose to use the tactics first? any help would be much appreciated. plus, I think you're videos are really great, helpful and straight forward to understand. it's great to see people with such a passion for the game.
+Stephen Hewgill You can resolve the icons in whatever order you choose!
Great video, guys! Perhaps the best tutorial I've seen.
+ameboaboy Great! We watch it and look at so much that needs to be approved. Haha. Thank you though!
thank you guys,it is a great tutorial! but i didn't understand why palpatine's attack did not delay damage on the objective card.
the dark side player decided not use Palpatine to defend his objective which meant the light side player with yoda was free to attack unopposed
It becomes available for you to use again!
As someone how like sometimes bring oldies for a night, how will you rank 40k conquest, agot, star wars, l5r, and netrunner when the main criteria is fun ?
Love your videos. I was wondering what video editing software you use to get all the cool effects.
OMG, dudes, I have only seen you videos from Destiny onwards where your hair is neat and tidy. Awesome.
Great production values! Good job!
Awesome videos! Looking forward to the future of this card game.
From the rulebook: "(Note the focus tokens may be placed on any unit
controlled by the opposing player, not just his participating units)."
very good and simple explanation, thank you
Young Zack Bunn... Future Pro Quest winner in 2021
P.s. I'm from the future
Question: On my attack phase, can I declare an attacker and an objective, then use a different card to declare an attack on a different objective, and so on?
Great video! Just a quick clarification. If I want to declare an attack on an objective and the 1 unit I have in play already has a focus token I presume I wouldn't be able to attack the objective because the unit is not readied?
Correct!
Late comment - Thanks for the video. Just saw I was doing some wrong things here. Awesome Zoom-thing on cards!
Could you do a comparison video for LCG s? Like Ashes, Invasion, Conquest, Game of Thrones 2nd, Star wars, Netrunner. How they feel differently what is similar etc.
That is a great idea!
many thanks for your videos, where can i get that amazing vaders card sleeves here in spain? do you ship to europe?
I watched your tutorial on Star Wars LCG, and many others. None mention the Shielding ability and how to correctly use it. Your tutorial had the ISB Interrogators played, but did not mention the ability/what is does/ when to activate. could you clarify this ability. *** Your Tutorial is far better then one created by Fantasy Flight. ***
Thank you Justin! Very kind of you to say. Apologies about Shielding! A huge miss on our part.
After you declare attackers, every unit with shielding can apply one shield token to any attacker, including itself. Likewise, after you declare defenders, every unit with shielding can apply one shield token to EITHER any defender, including itself OR the engaged objective.
Shields prevent the basic negative effects applied by your opponent and are then removed. For instance, if you take two damage and have one shield, you remove the shield and take one damage. If you are assigned one focus from an opponent's combat icons or ability and have one shield, you remove the shield and take no focus.
Think of shields as only preventing damage and focus that your opponent is actively placing on you. They do not prevent the focus that a unit receives from using its own combat icons or abilities.
Check out the entry for Shields in the rulebook for a more in-depth understanding! Hopefully this helps!
This explanation is better then the rulebook, which I read the "shielding" section quite a few times. Thanks again
If you have targetted strike and your opponent does not oppose. Can you still do the unit damage to him because of targetted strike.
hey guys
i have a quick question for you ^^
is it only possible to declare a conflict when you have unit(s) that can damage an objective (with the blast icon) i mean if i have only unit(s) on the table with the blaster pistol as weapon, it means that i can not make a conflict ? ( or can i just attack other unit(s), and if so would it be one to one or no rules on that ?)
thank you for your answer
cheers
Sorry, im mistaken, they CAN be committed but the icons arent counted due to the fact that they are focused
Good job, guys! Thinking about picking this up.
