Even his cover fire was a failure....... seriously cover the enemy to pin them in one location yet he was always basically shooting on the exact opposite direction of the enemy at every engagement.
Have you noticed that Guntank's arms work differently in different episodes! Sometimes they shoot actual small missiles, sometimes they shoot purple fireballs out of all barrels, sometimes they shoot orange fireballs like a Gatling gun.....
The mess up part is hayato actually competitive and work hard in simulation training off duty in comparison to Kai who is cowardly and slack off. Hayato really wanted to best Amuro as a ms pilot.

I can still remember playing Mobile Suit Gundam Federation vs Zeon on PS2. And I was stuck on this mission in the Federation campaign. It was a space mission, and I tried beating it with a Gundam, Guncannon, any space mobile suit in my arsenal. And nope, lost everytime. Then as a joke I tried Gun Tank in space, beat it first try. Gun Tank in space became in my ace in the hole in that game. Bailed me out in numerous missions after that, LOL.
you mean a gun tank? guncannons are definitely a good hybrid between the gundam and guntank. and yeah sometimes using the guntank in space was some much easier to hit mobile armors
Playing SD gundam g generation, Hayato got shafted . He initially starts off with higher melee stats than shooting and he get placed in non melee capable MS. When you recruit him, place him in the right suit and level him up he becomes a well rounded force to be reckon with.
The best part is in gundam the origin this basically is doubled down on, as Hayato being awful at everything but piloting the guncannon at the very end.

Still, Hayato did better than most other pilots and even held his own in the Battle of A Baoa Qu(original). In any case, the Guntank was not meant to be used the same way White Base used it. In fact, it's suppose to be a support MS that delivers artillery attacks from White Base or in the rear.

MSG: the least advanced suit of a group fails to destroy a SINGLE ZAKU (despite possibly having firepower to do so) because of a stupid kid who never heard of a thing called "projectile velocity".

See it’s writing like this that made it really hard for me to get interested in the gundam series. Granted I’m guessing each series isn’t this bad, but of the three I’ve attempted to now watch they’ve all been this “quality” and it is not fun to slog through this.
What are the three you've attempted to watch? I'm guessing it's the original, Seed, and Wing. If it is then yeah the neginning parts are a slog, and also Wing is just mediocre. Imo every Gundam series is worth watching except for one, but some of them are just better than the others.

Gosh there was this one guy in the gundam suit who I could not stand at all. Weird as shit and was even firing his guns at one point with his eyes closed! Who fucking does that!!!! Or gets that far in training to be doing that shit in combat. Like holy fuck.

Not useless, just not made for frontal assaults. Ideally, you'd want a three man squad of Guntanks laying down suppressing fire. If there were any ships in the vicinity, that squad would have a field day tearing it apart. Essentially, it's got big guns, but it's slow. It's got strong armor, and less mobility. Not too much you can do to improve that besides getting better at aiming. The Guncannon, for example, is still an artillery MS, but it has much better mobility and anti-MS weaponry. Probably because it has *legs,* and a Beam Rifle.
