      Practice. Take lessons. Learn songs. Expand your vocabulary. Become more conscious of your touch and dynamics when you play.
      That's all things that I need to do myself, but I've got another fucus right now.

      Anytime I need a bit of inspiration while practicing. If I feel I’m playing extra bad I’ll put on an Anderton video with Pete or Rabea playing and it just makes me play better.

    Love the plate and the spring sound on the UA.
    Plate in the Blue Sky is also gorgeous.
    Honestly though I’m yet to hear a plate reverb that sounds miles better than the Catalinbread Talisman, if you don’t care for stereo, that can’t be beat.

  • @petercane6376
    @petercane6376 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That was very interesting that the Blue Sky came out on top.
    I have one which I use with synths.
    It is also interesting that the BS has the least amount of chained effects thus making what it does have as almost pure.
    They reckon if you stack up a load of different patches together it can get muddy.
    So glad you went for Blue sky.

    • @sordel5866
      @sordel5866 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're spending this sort of money on a reverb and you can't take ease of use into account (because it's a blind test) then they'd better all be "perfect", or what's the point? They're trying to distinguish between the last 1% of tone, and by that point you're just talking about how you feel on the day.

  • @picksalot1
    @picksalot1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I liked the Illumine the best on the Plate setting for its metallic tone. I wish Pete could of had a chance to dial in his favorite tone on each pedal. They're obviously all good pedals. Thanks

  • @johnparker2636

    And the answer is.... they're all great - and at this price point, so they should be! It is a slightly weird idea to make different pedals sound the same and then pick the 'best' one. For me, in this group, its between the Blue Sky and Ventris, although as I have an Immerse (Mk1) I don't need any of them...Pete's playing is of course the real star!!

  • @markproctor3100

      With the exception of the Spring, The hall of fame 2 is incredible. I think the Boss RV-6 is the best spring I've tried yet. If you put that spring in the hall of fame, to me it'd be a perfect reverb pedal.

    • @Leychen
      @Leychen ปีที่แล้ว

      Me2, i mean i could buy one of these if i really wanted but i use very little reverb in band situations because it gets too much easily. Maybe for solo playing at home some expensive hi-end reverb would be more fun but also sort of pointless, i rather save space on my pedalboard for other huge pedals and keep the Hall Of Fame 2

  • @ryangilreath9241
    @ryangilreath9241 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Do this again, but for the best ambient pedal. Tones of decay, modulation, and mix at 60% or more. That's where the illumine shines best. Ventris-illumine-bigsky or cloudburst- Meris!

    • @2010njdevil
      @2010njdevil ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Meris is definitely something special. A lot to explore but also a lot that I wouldn't use. Expense included, I'd probably pick the Catalinbread Soft Focus for usable ambience at easier price. Meris is king for options and quality but definitely take the Soft Focus over the Cloudburst.....I spent a lot of time with each and the Soft Focus is just in another league.

  • @morganbartfield5457

    I've got the hall of fame 2 and that's always been ok for me, as most amps have a standard reverb anyway. I use it a lot more since I bought the orange pedal baby though. The trouble is with the shimmers etc, they sound amazing messing around at home. But for a practical use, ie gig etc there's just not that many songs I can use it on. I wouldn't be without it though.

  • @pickeringpick
    @pickeringpick ปีที่แล้ว

    Slightly outside the scope of this shoot-out I suppose, but shame they didn't demo the plate shimmer setting on the Strymon BlueSky. Sounds other-worldly; absolutely gorgeous, ethereal trails of warm, sparkly reverb in stereo. Start messing around with it and you'll lose hours of your day in bliss. I love my BlueSky, especially when mated to the El Capistan tape delay pedal. Strymon never disappoints!

  • @33shoobs

    Love my ventris. More proof that Pete can play anything without seeing the fretboard

    • @2010njdevil
      @2010njdevil ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I took the plunge, spent a lot of time with these and a few more....SRV Strat neck pickup only & .14 LP Traditional w/ '59 reissue pickups. Strymon just sounded too thin. really like UA, but it came down b'ween Neunaber MKII and the Ventris.....both rich tones but the Ventris had more reverb options, more wways to sculpt different textures with each reverb option. I really love Neunaber but the Ventris is a perfect 10 of 10.....and still king of Reverb in my opinion. GFI Specular Tempus was awesome but not user friendly for quick changing and dialing on the fly.

    • @33shoobs
      @33shoobs ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep same here. I play a 50s reissue with late 50s pickups. It’s a beautiful pairing. Love the e-dome setting a lot. I am glad i went with the ventris over a big sky. It doesn’t effect tone, and love the treble control for that.

  • @compucorder64
    @compucorder64 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought overall the Ventris is the winner. But, I'd be tempted to go with their Collider instead, for delays as well. Ventris had the lushest most complex sounding plate, and it's spring was very good. UAD had best spring, and plate was quite good - I notice these are good value second-hand now selling for around £250 and sound amazing for that almost 'mid-price' money. Illumine had a very good plate, but it's spring was the worst. I thought the Strymon honestly sounded a bit lo-fi, though it did have a pleasant warm character that merged with the guitar tone well - so it's still remains great choice after all these years. Illumine should think about improving their spring algorithm. Worth throwing a GFI Skylar into a mix, if testing Hall - great reverb at mid-price money, but don't think it does a Spring. Good plate though. Check out the Flamma FS02 too, love mine for £70. Had a Specular Tempus too and that had some lovely reverbs too - and so compact - with some reverb+delay and shimmer algos too.

  • @MrRizoable
    @MrRizoable ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The best value pedal is the Boss RV-6. It is in the medium price range and sounds insanely good. Would have loved to see how it compares in the test and how cheaper pedals would have sounded too.

    • @compucorder64
      @compucorder64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does sound good. The EHX Oceans 12 is another good mid-price reverb. On the cheaper pedals, I have a Flamma FS02, and I like it as much as the Boss RV-6. Slightly above the RV-6 I like the GFI Skylar best. For guitar, my favourite overall is the UAD Golden Reverberator because it does extremely well all round, and is best for spring reverb.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RV6 is a great value. But I was able to get a Neunaber Immerse Mk-II for $20 more than the RV6, so I went with the Neunaber. Out of all the reverbs, I like the Nuenaber the best. BigSky is great, but I don't need a $500 reverb box. Cloudburst is also great, but again, it's more money than the Neunaber Immerse. Neunaber wins.

    Finding a good spring reverb that actually drips and sounds like a real tank or something with actual springs is the toughest effect to find in a pedal. Room/Hall, plates, and shimmers are easier to simulate digitally. For that reason alone I would go with either the UA, the Strymon Flint, or an Oceans 11.

    They're all a little rich for my blood. Yes, they all probably sound better than my Plethora X5, but for around the same money as one of these pedals, I have 15 effects pedals plus all of the associated Tone-prints, the ability to tweak (if you're one of those people), plus a looper and a tuner. Is it going to sound as good as these ones, probably not. But it's good enough for me. Having said that, they do sound glorious! I need to spend some time with my X5 to see what it's capable of. Needless to say, Danish Pete is just a wonderful guitar player. He has mastered his tone, dynamics and style. For what it's worth, (which isn't much) which one was my favorite... arghh. In Plate mode, I'd say the Ventris or the Strymon, Spring mode, UA, Hall Strymon. Overall, I'd say Strymon wins.

    They all sound great, but the Illumine has a trump card. the Wet algos are stunning. and the bloom algo is in a similar ballpark to Strymons cloud. It isnt as tweekable as the Strymon but the relative lack of parameters to play with doesnt hold it back.. I had it and the BigSky at the same time and sold the BigSky.

    I think you should just go ahead and always throw a Helix (or some sort of multi-fx) in the mix on these blindfold tests. I'm always eager to see how they fair.

      I don’t know if I just haven’t bonded well with my Helix but I can’t get this type of reverb from it. I’ve seen others come close, I’ve duplicated their settings but it still lacks that little bit from getting over the top. It’s been a frustrating 4 years with my Helix but part of it is my fault. I haven’t put in the time that’s required I guess. I still like it and use it often but it’s a complicated beast.

    • @TheDilligan

      @@DanielC__ I find that when I have that issue with reverb effects, it usually comes down to the room you are in, your playing, and just overthinking it and over-tweaking settings. Because It seems that no matter how good a reverb sounds in demos, when you are the one holding the guitar and it's in your room, it can be disappointing if you don't take your room's natural reverb into account.
      I can perfectly match the legacy 63 spring to my favorite setting on the Strymon Flint Spring with minimal tweaking. At first I through it was bad and then I put them side by side and tested them and realized I was just overthinking it on the HX... which is easy to do when it gives you so much.

      Multifx tend to do pretty good with delays and verbs, it’s drives that it becomes more apparent but only to the player, not so much the listener

    Personally really was disappointed with the UA reverb. So hard to get a legit level with the reverb volume before the mix becoming to much but if you like subtle reverb with character it may be up your alley.

    I hate to be "that guy" especially because I'm not that nerdy, and I don't care that much, but if you're stacking digital pedals without true bypass (which presumably, some of those are) you're probably stacking some buffers and/or redundant AD/DA conversions. I have no idea how big of a difference this makes (if any, at least in a practical sense) but it might make "some".
    I know that stereo loopers are a bit less common than mono ones, but since you used a loop switcher for the overdrive shoot-outs, digital pedals could probably benefit even more from using one. You know, just as a due diligence/insurance policy/defence against "nerds who care".
    EDIT: After watching the summary, this becomes even more relevant. Now, just to be absolutely clear, I highly, highly doubt that this mattered, but there's like a miniscule chance that Strymon got a leg up in the shot-out, simply because it wasn't affected by the buffers/ADDA conversion of the other three pedals (it was first in the chain).
