One of the bonus features of reverbs with "evolving" sounds is that they discourage wanking. Yes, yes, I'm fully aware you can play as fast as you do. But the only way for you to actually HEAR the auditory miracles these things pull off is to *stop* playing for a bit, so you can hear them. I think that's a real gift to music.
Fantastic point. And this is coming from a self professed 80’s wanker. In a lot of the music I play these days (modern church music) I don’t need to try to be Edward Van Halen. So having more spacious reverb really forces me to slow down.
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr Different effects can impose a shift in focus on players. Whenever I hear from players who feel like they are in the doldrums, and need a kick in the arse for their playing and development, I will often recommend getting an envelope-controlled filter (autowah) of some kind, or a pitch-shifter/harmonizer. Autowahs push you to think like a drummer, syncing the sweep to the beat and general rhythm. Pitch-shifter force you to think about melody structure and movement more. Wanking of any kind sounds simply awful with either of those. Again, not to come down too hard on wanking. Sometimes one has to fill up space and time until a *really* good musical idea pops into your head and fingers. But when you want to go beyond wanking, it's good to have circumstances that force you to practice being creative and expressive even when you play fewer notes.

It sounded like you had a second player hitting harmonics in the background. I have the Afterneath but I can’t quite get the ambience I want out of it. @@bentackett6299 haha! As a result of watching this series, I have already bought a number of pedals! There's just no escaping it regardless of what you play!
I'm a guitarist and very mediocre keyboard player. I liked to use the keys to add a nice pad to some of my bands 4 track recordings back in the day. The first time I plugged my el-cheapo Casio keyboard into a pedal my first question was "why didn't you try this sooner, dummy!" An MXR 4 knob flanger was my favorite pedal to mess with. Took a bit of tweaking but the end results were worth the effort. Besides the obvious flanging it made a great chorus and doubling pedal. At a certain setting you could hear two almost distinct instruments/voices. It even emulated a steel drum sound pretty nicely. I still kick myself for selling it. Thinking of buying a new one but afraid it won't be quite the same.
Look, I know you prolly feel funny including one of your own effects but, The J.H.S. Alpine reverb is not only lush, beautiful and spacious but you included an effects loop in it! When I use my E.H. Pitchfork in the loop I get such a celestial sound that just floats there.. It's crazy beautiful!! Everyone should AT LEAST try one out! P.S. Since there is an effect loop in this pedal, the possibilities are endless! Unlike other reverbs you are NOT stuck with one sound (effect) besides the reverb itself. Great foresight on your part!
thank goodness the YT algorithm finally got something right and brought me here. subscribed. my reverb wipeout occurred with Slowdive's Souvlaki. It's still ringing.
It all started with an Alesis Midiverb 4 that I shoved in the upper portion of a suitcase with zip ties...I hauled that thing around for 3 decades until I discovered the Matthews Astronomer V2...
my favorite reverb on any album is the effect John Frusciante used on After The Ending off of The Empyrean. There's some crazy non-linearness that I don't quite understand but I love anyways, as well as just the space that it provides and the emotion it conveys
i absolutely love my mxr m300. it does all the classic reverbs well and has a really beautiful pad reverb that gets really shimmery and synthy, i use it all the time.
It’s a great reverb pedal. I just bought it for the second time and I plan on keeping it this time. Tried the Strymon Flint and the Keeley Caverns but I like the MXR more so those are gone and the M300 is back. ✌🏻
Cool episode again. As for albums with great use of reverb, Tom Waits "Mule Variations" is brilliant, as is Joe Henry's "Reverie," which was recorded basically live in a room with the windows open. I don't personally own any reverbs that do weird sounds, but the Catalinbread Talisman is an impossibly good plate emulator. I like to combine it with other stuff to create all sorts of cool sounds.
The source audio pedal was by far my favorite. Best way I can think of replicating that is overlaying bells on top of a guitar and even then it wouldn’t be as pretty, plus the riff was made for that pedal. Aww yuh, another awesome Thursday lol.
Dead Can Dance - The Host Of Seraphim - There are no words, you have to hear it. Personal fave reverb EQD: Ghost Echo. I'm not into complex reverb myself, I like pretty and simple... :)
In terms of albums there are 2(3) Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl 1&2 These 2 albums are the ones that got me into reverb and delay. All those pedals sounded amazing. My favourite of all time is the RV3.
I have a Peavey SRP-16 reverb from the early 80's that still gets a spot on my board. It has a massive amount of selections and has all I ever needed in a reverb. It was designed to be a rack mount reverb in a pedal format. My only complaint is the colour they chose. Its Pink lettering on an eggshell background and is very hard to read. Fortunately, I've become so use to it, I can manipulate it without too much trouble.
Went to see them the day it released in Nashville. Drove 3 hours and when I got there the record store was at capacity... still got to meet them after and I love that album.
I'm stoked to look into the Seymour Duncan Silver Lake. The Auto-Swell setting on the DL4 was my favorite so this seems to be my cup of tea. Also, the OBNE PROCESSION on the trem setting is my favorite from that pedal too. Love my Hardwire Supernatural Ambient verb. The plate mod and shimmer settings are amazing. Song that comes to mind is "Pretty Girl at the Airport" by The Avett Brothers. The reverb on the vocals makes the song all the more melancholy
It would be awesome if you could do other “Extraordinary...” videos for other effects, like “Extraordinary Delays, Extraordinary Chorus, Extraordinary Fuzz etc...”. This kind of video it’s groundbreaking for everybody interested in strange sound, even for a drummer like me! You’re great!
I'm all about a Dispatch Master > Afterneath > Transmisser > Ghost Echo. I almost never use them all at once live, but when I'm just at home baked it's amazing.
I love the Meris Mercury7. I had my eye on it ever since it came out and eventually got one. I highly recommend it. It's got (only) two algorithms, but they're wonderful and it has kind of its own sound. I like that.
I love this video. What I love is that he always doesn’t pick stuff the we all know are great. Yes, number one reverb we all know the Big Sky it’s on tons of board and it does it all. But, his videos are special because he is constantly showing the hidden gems in the world of guitar. I love reverb I have 3 reverbs on my board. Oceans 11, Hall of Fame 2 and a Caline Snake Bite. Each one has a special function but, when mix together creates beautiful soundscapes.
Agreed, I have the Polara and the Orange/Yellow delay they make, and I love both. The sound great and have amazing build quality. Definitely punching in above what you pay for them.
My first standalone reverb pedal was the Behringer RV-600. Great pedal, but not exactly what I was looking for. Then I found the TC Electronics Hallmof Fame 2 - awesome Reverb pedal, great takes on almost all of the most usable reverb sounds. I then decided to treat myself to something more ambient, and picked up the Walrus Slöer (my Hall of Fame 2 ended up on my daughter’s board) and holy moly… that thing is awesome. Pads, shimmers, anything you could want, and even the Slö’s ability to sustain, and still better yet, can store 3 presets. Amazing machine. I’ve also been playing with all the reverbs and delays included in the HX Stomp. Running that in parallel with the Slöer and the possibilities seem endless!
Bought a RV-500 recently; cheaper than it's multi footswitch competitors and has some really unique features and sounds. Unfortunately not the most intuitive, but definitely a pedal tinkerer's playground.
one awesome intuitive thing about it though, once you get used to the menus, patch, control, save etc, the other pedals in the line, like my boss dd 500, as well as the boss ms-3, have the same menu layouts. So, once you can use 1, you can quickly use them all, and with the save patches, footswitch accessibility, and amazing MIDI recall, once you spend all that endless time perfecting your tones, they can be recalled live so easily. A lot of work up front, but amazing like Josh said, these pedals will do any sound on this Video. Keep tinkering, I promise you'll love it. I have other pedals I love, but when playing live, I set up those sounds in the 500's for ease\y recall, and it never disappoints!
My fave reverb out of the ones you played? Well, even though I own and adore the Afterneath, I'd say it was the Caroline, hands down. That sub-layer of grunge just grabbed me, as did the runaway filth with the 2nd switch. Great vid, Josh.
I got the Slö the day it was released! Love that thing so much.. I haven't really figured out a good setting for Dark that I'm happy with, but the Rise setting is fun
Reverb became so popular that it actually got it’s own website

I love that you are just as enthusiastic if not more so about gear that in essence competes with you .
although a cliche by this point, never clicked a notification so fast. already sure it's gonna be a great video
Gotta say, from a brass player's perspective reverb pedals are a gift from god. They're like a concert hall in your pocket.
Man.. I'm not a guitarist.. i play keys.. but this is the best pedal series on the toob! Awesome job yet again.
Stick with keys and don't buy a guitar and some pedals! It's a dark dark hole..
@@bentackett6299 haha! As a result of watching this series, I have already bought a number of pedals! There's just no escaping it regardless of what you play!
@@spiderfingers2005
Uh oh..
Have you checked out the Boss SP-1 Spectrum? Its sort of spendy but I heard that Keyboardists used them. It's my favorite guitar pedal.
I'm a guitarist and very mediocre keyboard player. I liked to use the keys to add a nice pad to some of my bands 4 track recordings back in the day.
The first time I plugged my el-cheapo Casio keyboard into a pedal my first question was "why didn't you try this sooner, dummy!"
An MXR 4 knob flanger was my favorite pedal to mess with.
I REALLY can understand now your fascination with pedals. Who would have thunk that an effect as simple as reverb could be so... deep
Meteore owner. Absolutely love the pedal. The chaos switch is both more fun and useful than you might imagine.
The Way We Look At Horses is really nice! Great use of reverb, as you said. Thanks!
Look, I know you prolly feel funny including one of your own effects but, The J.H.S. Alpine reverb is not only lush, beautiful and spacious but you included an effects loop in it! When I use my
Such a good episode. Great choices. Surely Dan and Mick at TPS are jealous of how well this was produced.
Chris Issak - Wicked Game
I bought a Carl Martin Headroom Reverb because the demo had someone playing that song to absolute perfection.
thank goodness the YT algorithm finally got something right and brought me here. subscribed. my reverb wipeout occurred with Slowdive's Souvlaki. It's still ringing.
Ventris is gold, lovely playing Josh...
I’m in love with my SLO reverb. I blanket it in between two overdrives
🖤🖤🖤
I really like the Empress Reverb. It's feature rich and sounds glorious. & That's all I got.
I was surprised not to see it.
@@kurtneighbors7356 it's too ordinary. Many of interesting reverbs were not featured
I was also surprised not to see it. The most elaborated one I know. My life has never returned to the same since I got that Pedal!
Beats the Strymon Big Sky, imho.
Dude the ghost setting on the Empress! It kills the ambient game. I love mine with my whole heart.
The slo completely overshadowed the fathom and I think that’s a bit unfair. Amazing algorithms and the mod is truly one of the best I’ve ever heard
This Mortal Coil- Song To The Siren. Definitely wouldn't be the same with out the reverb.
I love your videos, man!
For the record, the Offspring started in the 80s, and is still playing today... they ain't just a 90's band!
When we gonna talk about that white amp?
think its a milkman made for them
you see.... loud.... is more good. you follow?
@OrganicEcstasy what's the name of the episode? Thanks
Buy it at sweetwater.com
Came into this video with some concern having recently purchased the Neunaber Expanse setup. No regrets. I love my Expanse.
I just love my slö ... im just a bit overwhelmed because of the variety of settings
Great video but I think Shift line astronaut V3 and Flux liquid ambience are worth mentioning for sure! Check out those beautiful reverbs out!
Love the Afterneath, big fan or EarthQuaker's stuff...but that Specular Tempus! I've always loved the reverb on Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser.
The specular tempus is the greatest pedal I have ever owned....I will keep it forever...so intelligently designed!!
Afterneath hands down the most unique pedal out there!
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room wouldn't be the same without the reverb filling the space between John's chord stops.
i absolutely love my mxr m300. it does all the classic reverbs well and has a really beautiful pad reverb that gets really shimmery and synthy, i use it all the time.
I like to combine it with other stuff to create all sorts of cool sounds.
th-cam.com/video/RLX0XZMNBaU/w-d-xo.html
that dude Eric Haugen does a bunch of demos on Marc Ribot, Tom Wait's guitarist (and HUGE part of his sound) they're amazing. Marc Ribot is a genius.
saw them live - was pretentious
@@jackbenson8228 They make some extraordinary music... just ignore Brendan Perry's other interests.
In terms of albums there are 2(3)
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl 1&2
These 2 albums are the ones that got me into reverb and delay.
I have to say..I just love your pedal demos.... Your casual, chatty style..really great....thanks!!
A Black Mile to the Surface by Manchester Orchestra has the best verb on it!
Andrew Yarbrough one of the best albums
@@spookywharton definitely in my top ten!
I like that.
ooh that's a pedal I REALLY want
@@ExperimentIV Yes, yes you do! ;)
My ambient-thirsty ears approve!! Amazing chillout jams on this one.
The Empress Reverb...The ghost and beer settings. Have you tried it, Josh?
Song: Wasyeland, Baby. Hozier. Vocal has a trem/verb.
Totally agree. Empress Reverb Ghost is my favorite reverb ever. ....Also just saw Hozier live and it was the best.
I dig my DigiTech Polara the Halo mode has super lush cascading octaves.
Agreed, I have the Polara and the Orange/Yellow delay they make, and I love both. The sound great and have amazing build quality. Definitely punching in above what you pay for them.
Agreed. Wish the Reverse didn't cut out all the dry signal though.
The Mooer Ocean Machine falls right into this category. It even plays itself!!
love my Red Panda Context, has great classic sounds but also has some freaky sounds on it.
asparagusman yessir. The cathedral setting is my favorite because of the gritty chorus-y sound, what’s yours?
@@ronaldbronco6387 I like the plate reverb a lot. sounds like old recordings. But I couldn't believe a reverb pedal could sound that lush.
Love my Context, too! Its input does overload pretty easily, so it sits pretty near the front of the effects loop.
Looooove the afterneath! cramp up the drag as the reverberation settles, incredible.
I've got the Walrus Slo. It can add some great sounds to any song me and my guys are playing. They live how it sounds too! I'd love a Ventris someday.
My fave reverb out of the ones you played? Well, even though I own and adore the Afterneath, I'd say it was the Caroline, hands down. That sub-layer of grunge just grabbed me, as did the runaway filth with the 2nd switch. Great vid, Josh.
I really like my Strymon Flint! The plate is my personal favorite...
I second that! Great pedal with a lot of functionality in a small foot print.
Приятный и расслабляющий выпуск ,благодарю. Каквсегда на высоте
Galaxie 500..Blue Thunder....drenched in reverb
I am definitely a reverb addict. A small bright room is something I have going always.
The specular tempus is played in our band and it is spectacular,AMAZING, a living creature.
Thanks for the Chill-O-Verb episode. Phillipe's Verb-O-Stortion Pedal really caught my attention. Ok, they they were all Cool-O-Verbaliscious !
Shout out to Digitech Polara, it's pretty cheap, great build quality, its stereo, and the halo setting sounds incredible.
I completely agree, the halo is great, but the other effects are cold, cheap.
That Afterneath pedal sounds a little like my Supermoon silver by Mr. Black. Very nice.
I got the Slö the day it was released! Love that thing so much.. I haven't really figured out a good setting for Dark that I'm happy with, but the Rise setting is fun
Can really sense your love for music and pedals, props to you and your company newfound respect for JHS
