I doubt we (Sweden) would leave all 5 of our 4 subs in port at the same time. Odds are at least one of those subs would have been trailing the russian fleet, with another one near by

True. I think standard practice is to always have at least half out at sea.

I'm pretty sure they would have Gripens in the air watching the Russian fleet make its traverse of the southern Baltic. I know they would have when I was in Sweden in the late 80s, and while the Cold War may be over, Russia's recent history (pre-2022) would still be cause for keeping a close eye on them.

    • @dbernardstevens475

They probably would have had at least one Gotland or more shadowing the “peacetime training” and at the first missile launch, bye bye Ropuchas (or Kuznetsov)

    • @sleepy_dobe
      @sleepy_dobe ปีที่แล้ว +33

I don't know typical navy procedures but I'd also imagine that once the first Russian missile has been fired, some navy commander would be trying to get those subs in port to dive and push out even if on a skeleton crew. Would the missiles lose radar lock if the subs go beyond a certain depth? But as many have said, no self-respecting navy would leave all their subs in port, even during peacetime. There would definitely be some out at sea, at least patrolling their waters to secure the country's shipping lanes.

  • @belgianblue1988

Sweden would never have all subs stationed in port with the entire Baltic fleet out on a exercise. A minimum of 2 subs would be at sea watching the fleet with the rest on short notice if the fleet made any hostile moves.
And the Visby class would not even be detected at the ranges the Russians fired their AShm if the Visby’s was running their entire ECM suite.
    But still fun to watch!

    • @TommyGlint
      @TommyGlint ปีที่แล้ว +16

It is a fun watch, but you might as well watch some World of Warships gameplay. Perhaps an exaggeration since this is more complex, but there are too many “let’s pretend”’s here for it to be much more that fun and giggles.
Any sort of Russian build-up like this would be watched closely, no matter the pretence of an ‘exercise’ or just ‘relocating’ some units. This not only from Sweden, but Poland, Germany and certainly Denmark. Once the attack is on, these countries would also react. Despite mutual teasing and sports rivalries, there’s no way Denmark would just watch on the sidelines as Sweden is attacked.
There’s no way that much Russian activity would go un-noticed by the Danes THAT close to Bornholm island. The Swedes would get a phone call within minuttes.

A Russian aggression wouldn’t likely begin like this. But with some civilian roll-on roll-off ships at harbor-that was supposed to deliver whatever goods-instead beginning to push out IFVs, MTBs, troops and possibly even attack helicopters. At the same time small groups of SFs who have infiltrated the nation through different means, begin to destroy or take command over important infrastructure.
Anyway… Even in the case of initial success, Russia couldn’t ever sustain a logistical naval operation. They couldn’t in Ukraine even with rather clear roads and many bridges intact. A naval one from Kaliningrad to Gotland… nah.
The tragic issue is however that Putin with yes sayers all around him may try anyway, ignorant to the loss of life. NATO membership now decreases the chances of him acting in such a way.

Sweden has very competent diesel-electric subs and they (and the rest of Scandinavia) are defending a choke point. To get out of the Baltic and North Seas, the Russians have to get past Scandinavia, Germany, and the UK. It wouldn't be easy. For another example of the situation that Russia is in, they seized Crimea to protect their Black Sea access, but even there they have to successfully navigate the Dardanelles and exit the Mediterranean to get out into the ocean. They also have ports on the Pacific and Arctic oceans, but Sevastopol is their only year-round ice-free port. For all its coastline, Russia is virtually landlocked in a modern naval context.

Speaking of which... Published today: "The US Air Force has carried out its first successful full test of a new hypersonic missile as it looks to claw back ground in a superpower arms race with Russia and China.
The missile, an All-Up-Round AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) [pronounced like the threatening sound pirates make] was fired off the Southern California coast and travelled greater than five times the speed of sound, before detonating in a controlled area.
Launched from a B-52H Stratofortress, the test was a significant step towards the US having fully operational hypersonic weapons that could be used in conflict or as a deterrent."

They had just one ship operational, the Bespokoyny, a Sovremenny-class destroyer, and it wasn't in very good condition at all. Their attitude was that, if one system wasn't working, they had another one. The naval base was full of old. rotting ships, including assault hovercraft, landing ships and a couple of wing-ships. Awesome looking things but worth less than scrap. A wonderful visit and. as I said, extremely eye-opening.

The Battle of Karlskrona was a surprise attack launched by the Baltic Fleet components of the Russian Navy, against the Karlskrona Naval Base of the Swedish Armed Forces, in the early afternoon of April 14, 2022. The goal of the Russian attack was to neutralize the threat of the Swedish Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) submarines of the Gotland-class and Södermanland-class, and to land and occupy the island.
In response to the Russian presence, the Swedish Navy scrambled four Visby-class corvettes, two CB90 fast attack craft, and a squadron of JAS-39 Gripen, along with placing shore batteries on alert. The battle began with a Kalibr-cruise missile strike led by the frigate Admiral Flota Kasatonov. The resulting barrage would strike and sink the Visby and her sister, the Uddevalla. However, the missiles fired by the corvettes made their way through the AA screen and impacted the flagship of the fleet, the Kirov-class battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy, in the area of the amidships torpedo launchers; the resulting detonation of the torpedoes doomed the capital ship. Another pair of missiles struck the Slava-class cruiser Moskva, igniting a fire underneath the expended missile tubes.
In the air, the Swedish Gripens and their Meteor air-to-air missiles proved decisive, ultimately eliminating the air wing of the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, claiming 21 MiG-29K kills, with the other aircraft lost to crashes or friendly fire, at the cost of 10 Gripens.
The loss of the air component, the flagship and the admiral gave his replacement enough pause to order the landing forces turned around. As the Russian forces began to disengage, another wave of Swedish anti-ship missiles struck the Moskva, overwhelming her damage control and ultimately sinking the ship.
Tactically, the battle was more or less a draw. Russia was successful in eliminating the Swedish submarine force, with only the recently decommissioned Östergötland surviving the attack. However, Russia in turn lost two capital ships, an entire air wing of MiGs, and a number of experienced pilots, and ultimately gave up the landing attempt.
The international response to the attack has been swift and decisively against Russian interests. Sweden and Finland have begun the process of applying for NATO membership, effectively sealing the remnants of the Baltic Fleet in a NATO sea. In the wake of the loss of public face, concern turns to the cold stalemate in Ukraine, and if Russia will continue to support the separatist territories, especially as Ukrainian Bayraktar TB-2s continue to batter the separatists.

Considering that a single Swedish submarine "defeated" a large part of the US fleet, when during an exercise in the US in 2005 it went by unseen and sank their aircraft carriers and other large ships, and considering how incompetent Russia has proven to be, I'm pretty sure that Sweden would withstand an attack from Russia's fleet.

I think you'd have to call that a narrow win for the Swedes, they still have aircraft and therefore air superiority. At the point you leave it the remaining Gripen would be re-arming for anti-ship operations and the missile defences would also be reloading. The Russians seem to be out or nearly out of missiles and I don't think they'd be able to fend off further attacks. As other people have pointed out it's unlikely all 5 Swedish subs would be in port either.

Good video. However, I don't think Russia could 'suprise' Sweeden in this fashon. Any forces would likely depart from St. Petersberg, and the Gulf of Finland is fairly narrow waters and heavily travelled. A more realistic way to start this attack is with submarines and a combination of Backfire / Bear bombers. If you started your attack this way and bring in a smaller surface naval force that 'just happened to be passing by'. Launch Friendly fighters as soon as the first missle breaks the surface and see if the fighters can catch up with the bomber force.
Personally, if I was designing the Russian side, I would have a squadron of Backfires attack a decoy attack to the north of the main target. While you are trying to catch up to splash those (and empty the fuel tanks), the bears launch KH-22s from the south.

At 3900 tons (frigate size) they have more weapons and are a better fit our navy compared to the much smaller 640-ton Visby-class corvettes. The royal war science academy had a scenario a few years ago where the Russians use civilian RO-RO ferries to make surprise invasions in Karlskrona Gotland and Nynäshamn(south of Stockholm).
Getting a first wave ashore that then waits for the second wave to break through.
This is one of the standard scenarios that is expected.
The third Sea Warfare Flotilla in Karlskrona also has the only coastal battery in Swedish service 311 Robotenheten with truck mounted RBS15 mk2 missiles. The unit will upgrade to mk3+ (intermittently called mk4) in the future.
This unit is often deployed in peacetime to keep watch during increased activity, right now its on Gotland because of Russian execises, in early 2022 it was in southern Sweden as amphibious ships bound for the black sea sailed past.
We do not know which surface to air missiles the Visby will get in its mid life upgrade but this year it gets the new Torped 47 and new tubes increasing the torpedo loadout to from 4 to 8 40cm torpedoes 20km+ range.

Sweden from 2027 will use Saab's GlobalEye using an updated version of Erieye radar except they mount it on a Bombardier 6000 corporate jet rather than a 737. The GlobalEye has a range of about 215-325 nautical miles using an S-band radar, similar airborne detection range performance to the E7 which uses a L-band radar, but the E7 also adds wider ELINT signals gathering capability. GlobalEye is naturally cheaper, about $250m to an E7 at $600m (flyaway cost).

    - A Stealth version of HMS Visby,
    - add the GR AESA radar to the Gripen to the Gripen C mod as a poor mans Gripen E,
    - unnerf the Meteor and the RBS15 Mk4,

I'll take it. It's an alternative history where you gave Russia a lot of advantages and it was still about a 50/50. Meaning (the simulation atleast) would give Sweden a decisive win if Russia didn't have those advantages :D

I think you forgot about the flotilla of Tugs required for the Russian CV to be at sea.

Really hope you've got functional subs on the list of things you're putting in this mod cus surely they'd have some subs already submerged, patroling that would vector towards the Russian fleet as soon as it was obvious they were heading to attack.
Although of course the Russians would have their own subs so there would be a whole other aspect to the battle, JUST THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!!!

Those Visby-class corvettes are really cool!! How many Visbys do you think it would take to replace the regular escorts in a US carrier group? Asking for a friend. 🙂

Infinite, the Visbys aren't constructed for dark blue duties.

Yeah, I was gonna say. I don't think they fit the same role ^^ But if their propulsion matched the needs. I find it an interesting question still.

One Arleigh Burke carry the same firepower as the entire Swedish navy.
However, there’s a larger Visby Class concept which could be a cost effective and reliable substitute to the LCS’.
