Loved Storm of the Century. It's a bit of a funny story. My mom thought she was buying The Perfect Storm (she loved that movie, idk). She bought this instead. Thank God for similar titles. She watched the first five minutes, turned it off and came knocked on my bedroom door. I opened the door and she handed it to me saying "I can't even buy myself a tape anymore without it being something you would like." She smiled and walked away. She passed away in 2004, that memory has always stuck with me.

Though I didn't quite realize it then, I was lucky enough to have one of the coolest childhood/teenage experiences ever. Born in 1980, I grew up in an apartment above our local video store and started working there by the time I was 12. The Stephen King movie/mini-series renaissance was such a huge thing. People planned their lives around some of this stuff, especially the really big ones like IT or The Stand. The home video releases were always crazy times as well. We would often get in screener copies of stuff in advance and I loved being able to take them home and invite friends over to watch stuff before anyone else could see it. This era was such a memorable part of my life, I only wish I had appreciated it a bit more at the time- I certainly wouldn't have taken as many things for granted.

Great review! I remember watching Skeepwalkers on the big screen. The second half just ramps it up to 11. Madchen Amick was my big crush from the get go. I believe she is The litmus test of whether a dude’s straight or belongs in Nightmare on Elm Street 2 in the BDSM dungeon with that gym coach and the not-so straight protagonist. Quote of the day: ‘….people should keep their hands to themselves, here’s yours…..’

Secret Window is one of my favourite Stephen King adaptations and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I know it's really predictable and cliché but it's still pretty entertaining and I never get tired of watching it.
Dolores Claiborne is also super underrated and it’s actually Kathy Bates's favourite role.
Doctor Sleep is the best SK adaptation since The Mist. It perfectly reconciles King's novels and Kubrick's adaptation.
Dolan's Cadillac is not your typical SK story but it's still a great slow paced revenge thriller. Christian Slater was amazing.

My thoughts on the Storm of the Century was that Linoge didn't have power over the weather but had a kind of omniscience so he could see when the storm would end. He was pressuring the townspeople to choose not because he had control, but because he was bluffing. If the storm ended before he got the child then the townspeople would never have chosen and he would have nothing at the end.

Stephen lives right down the road from me here in Bangor, Maine. I played basketball against his son well over 30 years ago in a grade school all star game. Stephen shows up looking the part dressed down and wearing them old school colored converse. He's a strange dude but interesting for sure. About every time I pass by his place there are people camped in front of his house taking pictures. Pretty funny

  • @ryanedwards7487
    @ryanedwards7487 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Thank you for realizing that Andre Linoge is NOT truly evil. You got it right there -- how much do we really care about the life of an insect? I love how he calls them all Mayflies when telling them in the Town Hall that, even though he is "old and sick", he will still be alive long after all but the youngest of the kids -- maybe the teenager, if he's lucky -- has long since died. But, he also shows them a level of compassion and remorse. Colm Feore plays him as an entity that honestly is doing what he does not because he enjoys it (however, I think he really does enjoy telling Mike and the town about the truly deplorable humans they live with, like the pedophile priest), but because he has to to make sure what he is survives past him. I've always thought that it's an entity vital to the survival of the Multiverse. Some kind of being akin to The Watcher in Marvel Comics -- a chronicler of our particular universe that must exist. It's not really evil, it's not really good. It just is, and has to be, regardless of how it's maintained. I've also always thought that he let's Mike see Ralphey at the end as a means of reward or compassion. Mike was the one person in the entire town that stood up to him, and fought him tooth and nail, even though it was futile. He probably earned Linoge's eternal respect. Linoge saw the inherent goodness of him, and wanted to reward him with one last visit to his son. To let him know that he was alive, and would be so for millennia. However, because Linoge is not human, he ended up causing a ton of pain without considering it, because again -- how much do we really value the life of an insect?

It's so ironic: In 1995, Ted Levine co-starred in what is arguably one of the greatest crime dramas ever made, Michael Mann's "Heat", starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, etc...and then he also appeared in this stinker "The Mangler". However, for all its flaws, I like it.

As an avid King's consumer (both books and films/series) I need to say that I've seen all of this jewels, being my faves in this order
    1- Sleepwalkers
Because is more of solitude and survival and how toxic a relationship can became on those circumstances (on the sleepwalkers side) and need to be seen by their peers no matter if she's already accepted by them (on the final girl side)
Is a conplete study on those characters
    2- Storm pf the century
It's all about how it only take a vulnerable thing to someone take the power and lead you to a path of despair, and it will be all about will and moral.
    3- The mangler
Is all about ambition and doubtful morals. How much are people holding onto something that make them suffer to achieve a goal.
Either way, this one is not bad, and is a fun watch.
Need more of adapted King's work videos!!

Any movie with Mädchen Amick in it gets an automatic extra point on the dice from me.
Since the first time I saw her in Twin Peaks, I had a crush on her and I don't think it ever went away.
That smile could break the strongest of men🙂

I loved the cast of Sleepwalkers Mädchen Amick and Brian Krause, especially Alice Krige. She stole every scene she was in. They're all three so goregous and talented. I know it was a campy movie but the actors were awesome.

The Mangler, such a Good and Fun movie. A Low Budget Underrated GEM in my opinion.
Agreed, the Basic Premise is indeed Outlandish and even Seemingly Silly.
But its really the Characters that make this movie what it is and that i think is because Tobe Hooper wanted to have Fun with this. A Silly idea but Figured out and Taken Seriously. And that's the point of Opportunity for the Suspension of DISBELIEF to kick in where the Story and Characters get to shine.
Here's what i remember about the film Then vs Now and why i think it would perform Better today. Not by a whole lot but it Could get a more Cult following if given a chance.
The Core part of the Story is twofold, Corruption and Redemption.
One character "falls to the dark side" by the end and our Detective gets a form of Redemption by Facing his own Demons by facing the Evil of Corruption and the Mangler itself.
Yes, by the end the Mangler is back operating like nothing happened to stop it but...the Detective is able to Leave the town, escape the Corruption and essentially save his soul.
The dialogue was Fantastic throughout and you really felt the connection between hardigan and his only 2 friends.
Anything will a sequel to this is to be Avoided, pure waste of time.

i stopped being able to read king as an adult because his writing is poor but i love his storytelling and i love "bad" movies so the king adaptations are some of my fav repeat watch horrors, sleepwalkers was a fav growing up.

My husband and I really loved this one. I was completely devastated when I found out what he actually wanted. Feore was amazing as the villain. It really made me think what I would do if in that position.

Guess it must be a “generation” thing….. I was a teenager in the 90s…. When we got cable in the early 90s, we got the monthly TVGuide and would just highlight any movie labeled as horror/Thriller/Suspense/Sci-Fi and tape it on VHS…. So I watched all these…. I particularly loved Sleepwalkers….
