    This video is a complete guide how to get to the EGR valve in 1.6HDi/TDCi engines. The car is a 1.6HDi Peugeot Partner 2007 (90bhp; M59). This is the same as Citroen Berlingo from the same year. This guide should be similar to other Peugeot and Citroen cars, also Ford 1.6TDCi, apart from the position of the airbox filter.
    There were no errors, but with a faulty EGR valve you may get some of these error codes: P0490, P1162, P0401 and P0409.
    This is a replacement EGR valve. I replaced my original EGR valve ~1.8 years ago and travelled ~20,000 miles since then. The carbon build up in the EGR valve is from this mileage.
    When cleaning the EGR valve use carburettor cleaner or diesel EGR cleaner. Do not use oven cleaner. Oven cleaners will contain NaOH/KOH. These react with the aluminium in the EGR valve and will dissolve it.
    The whole process of cleaning the EGR valve takes ~2-3h. 10-12Nm torque for EGR bolts and bolts for diesel fuel filter bracket.

    I am sure a lot of people are thinking, that is a lot of effort. Can I just use an air intake spray and be done with this. Here is the result using a spray vs. toothbrush: th-cam.com/video/koSxf67CtHI/w-d-xo.html
    Also, for cleaning the EGR valve, use any carb cleaner or even better, dishwashing liquid and water. See here: th-cam.com/video/koSxf67CtHI/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks for the description very informative. What I found when doing this was that the parts had become magnetised making assembly difficult with the spring being magnetised it was jumping out of position .I eventually assembled and fount the rotor sticking/jerking and not returning to position. i left this overnight intending to de-magnetise the next day. came back the next day without doing anything the rotor was turning freely as it should. What happened overnight ... I don't know?

      Hi MM, have you considered blanking the egr valve on this engine ?
      I did this to my C-max, 2005, 2.0L TDI and produced a big improvement in mpg and performance.
      I'd like to do it to my 2017, 1.5L HDI blue in my Peugeot 2008.
      Also at what mileage would you expect the egr to give problems ?
      Your opinion would be much valued, thanks.

      @@nigelmitchell351 Good question nigel. I have considered it, but unlikely I will do it. Several reasons for that. Diesels get vilified a lot and blanking these does not help us using our diesels. There will be quite a bit more pollution once the EGR is blanked, mainly Nox. So, it will be polluting more. Separate from that is the operating temperature of the engine, the EGR reduces that, so a blanked EGR will increase a bit your cylinder temperature. There are multitude of positives to using the EGR, from pumping losses to making the cylinders/volume smaller when not needed, e.g. driving on a motorway, so that all in all reduces consumption. Good video that describes all of these is here: th-cam.com/video/FrpyLvPodkc/w-d-xo.html

    Excellent video. My wife's Citroën C4 has much the same engine and we were quoted AUD2,500 to replace the valve, which the garage says has a faulty (intermittent), "sticking", EGR valve. Needless to say, we won't be bothering the garage again regarding the EGR valve.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi David, EGR valves are a bit expensive and it takes time to get to it and replace it, but AUD2,500 is way too much. 1/2 of that is kind of acceptable for a complete replacement.

    Thanks for a very useful video. A removed and cleaned the EGR on a C4 picasso where the acessibility is very poor. Three hands would be needed for re-assembly and there is space for one and a half ... My problem was to avoid dropping the thin plate between engine and the EGR. My ultimate solution was two small drops of super glue close to the bolts loosely fixing the plate to the EGR. When the glue had dried it was easy to connect the EGR to the intercooler and then attaching bolts. No risk of dropping the plate! I guess that the small amount of glue won't interfere with the intended fit. Seems to work!

    Just finished cleaning the same egr and it also wasn't that bad but also was getting stuck towards the end of the run much like your's. What i did was knocking out the fork by hammering it gently and opened it completely. I then turned it upside down and knocked it on a piece of wood and a lot of carbon came out. Even after this it still felt like it was hard to turn and it turned out to be the bearing on the inside. I cleaned this with carburetor cleaner and greased it. Job done. Hey Friend you made my day with this brilliant How-To film.
      Curious -Can I use some thin ( 1 or 2mm ) Tin Plate out of my garage for a Home Made Blanking Plate ? Or does it need to be Stainless Steel ?
      Also should there be a hole in said plate for the EML to go off ?
      Thanks 🙏

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oooyugi You can use anything. I would just get a blanking plate from a coke can or a beer can. It does not need to be stainless steel. It is a good question about the hole. I do not know the answer to that. Depending on the model you might not get EML from the blanking plate. For other car makes they have been successful with one or several holes to avoid EML. I guess you could try and see if that is the case with your model.

      Hi. Also. Does the EGR Valve still have to work, even with a Blanking Plate fitted. Otherwise the van will remain on Limp Mode ? I suppose I’m asking can the faulty EGR be unplugged (or fault deleted on computer diagnostics ) and considered void with Plate in situ. As EGR isn’t being used no more so I will be basically buying a new EGR just to continue a correct electrical circuit. I hope I’m making sense.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oooyugi As far as I know, it will not work if you just unplug it. The computer knows that it is unplugged and will give you EML. The trick is to have it plugged, but blocked. If the EGR is faulty, the computer might still recognise this and give you EML.

      @@moremolecules I did the operation on my recently acquired 2004 C3 XTR, with the DV4TED4 engine (the 1.4hdi 16 valver that the 1.6 replaced), it was similar enough, but I have a few remarks:
      - (on my model at least) you can get away with not undoing the fuel filter, just sliding it out of it's rails and shoving it away allows for removing the airbox with a bit of shuffling arround. So I saved having to worry about bubbles in my system/priming it with the pump.
      - you didn't cover cleaning the EGR tube that goes from the EGR valve to the intake. That tube was a massive pita to get out since I had ECU wiring in the way and didn't figure out how to unplug it.
      On mine, the EGR valve itself was the pneumatic version and was barely dirty, but the tube was absolutely filthy and I suspect was causing issues. I cleaned it up with a stick, soap, WD40 and the hose, then erased the error codes and the engine light went away, hopefully it stays that way. I'll make sure to regularly blast it clean on the autobahn :)

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hugobros3 Yes I did not, but it is on my todo list. The thing is that apart from the EGR pipe, one also probably needs to clean the air intake for the cylinders, as these will be also covered with soot. Because it is quite a bit of work removing all the wiring and injector pipes, I am waiting to get a second car and then do all the work.
      I do not think it matters if you give it a blast now and then, it will generate the soot anyway. The main problem is the oil that goes from the crankcase/turbo and creates a bit of hard mixture with the soot. Maybe the 1.4hdi is a bit better in that respect, but I doubt it.

    What a cracking video. Although i don't have a 1.6 but a 2015 Euro 5 Expert 2.0 hdi 130bhp with the same symptoms. The boost is there especially in 1st gear but quickly disappears. It takes around 20+ seconds to get to 60mph. It's had a brand new turbo and EGR fitter in the last 10k miles. Also throttle body and inlet manifold removed and cleaned. No fault codes on mine. Full service too. New MAF and MAP.
    Trouble is it's so tight in my engine bay. I can't access the solenoids at the back of the engine. Because the turbo works intermittently i don't think it's a pipe off but i could be losing boost The EGR seems to operate on startup too, so it's all got me a bit stumped. Thanks for the vid.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely sympathise with the amount of space. I would certainly look into the turbo solenoid. It could well be a bit stuck, so little boost provided. There was a video somewhere of cleaning it, but difficult to get to and the price of a new one is really cheap. Not too certain about the 2.0HDi and it is a newer model than mine, but there must be a relief valve somewhere between the injectors. That should be free of gunk.

      I just saw your coolant change, very good tips, especially your DIY header bleeder, I don't think I need that on my C4 because the collant tank is way higher than on your partner
      But because its and LHD, the second bleeder is much harder to reache (kinda hidden by the air filter box)
      Anyway, you got a very well deserved subscriber !

      @@moremolecules I tried today but the valve won't return (unlike yours) I tried to let it soak in WD40 and it improved a lot, I had return (almost to the end of the position) but when I put it back and tried to calibrate it with diagbox, I get a failed calibration and if I try to check the values reported for the EGR valve, the result is "incorrect value" I think I'm good for a trip to the scrapyard to get an used one.
      Since I am planning to block it with an Knox plate, it doesn't matter brand new or used.
      I just want a working one since the MOT in France check for default codes via OBD and can refuse a car if some defaults are present (even if the engine light is off !)
      I also saw 2 types of EGR valve but as I remember it not on the 1.6 HDi
      The 1.4 HDi as a different one and the 2.0L HDi also an other one

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vlone59 Do you mean the upper spring thing does not move freely back or the actual valve inside the bottom part? If is the upper, the spring is not positioned correctly. If it is the bottom, yes soak it in something, also wash it with washing up liquid, etc. If the upper moves alright and the bottom moves alright, but when you put them back together you get the errors, it is the way you put them back together. The bottom you only need to check if the pin can move along nicely in the channel.
