Part Three: • Bristlenose Pleco Bree...
This is part two of my Bristlenose / Bushynose pleco breeding project! If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me at FoisyYT@gmail.com and be sure to subscribe to see more amazing aquarium videos!
Some lessons learned: Only keep one male and 2 or 3 females in each tank or divided section. Otherwise the males fight nonstop! If you remove the eggs from the cave, use an egg tumbler to help prevent fungus. The Java Ferns were the only plants that my larger plecos didn't tear up. And try to only breed Bristlenose of the same variety / color, to get offspring that are worth more. Super reds, blue eyes, green dragons, and long fins are more valuable and easier to sell. If you are planning on breeding, make sure you have enough capacity to hold all the babies as they grow for at least 6 months, and make sure you have a place to sell them!

Great quality video. I like to see people learning and adapting their processes as they gain experience. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoy
Just an FYI, 4 anyone breeding bristlenose, the garden-variety brown snails will not eat the eggs. I have a tank filled with garden snails and they crawl all over the eggs and never hurt them at all. Also, occasionally the males will kick eggs out of their cave, but generally, bristlenose are excellent parents and will not harm the eggs.
Plecos are my favorite fishes in the aquarium ever
Fascinating.
Glad you enjoyed

i'm new into breeding ancistrus. I have a male now guarding eggs in a cave. I have 2 females and 3 males super red ancistrus, in a 1 m tank with a lot of wood and big anubias, and caves... I've been told to keep at least a few males, because breeding is an exhausting job, because the guardening males does not eat for a week or more. So after breeding, the male can rest and recover from this, while another male can take action if there is another female carrying eggs... I don't know if this is the best thing to do, il'm still learning... My ancistrus also goes into the internal filter now and then,(just like your ancistrus "climbed" into your breeding box) so yes they move above the waterlevel to get somewhere, if they want to.
The newborns are so freaking cute.
Daddy pleco said where are my kids
They have taken away to be looked at. Not good. Bothers me a bit bit thats ok. I am happy that i left mine alone and they bred their own way with no himan interaction. The besg way in my eyes
I wonder if they can follow a hormone or scent to the eggs
cool now they wont die thank you
Placos are great parents :) even mothers stay close in a case something happens to a father. I did not know that males are primarily taking care of eggs and put mother with eggs in nursary tank. She was taking care too.
Again such a helpful video!
Okay, one more tip for people, for plants for bristlenose I can highly recommend water wisteria which the babies will eat off of but will not destroy and the bigger ones will leave alone because it is too delicate to support their bodies. The larger ones like to lay on large Amazon swords also, and they will only eat dying material typically. Finally, water Sprite or water Wisteria floating on the top works really well in pleco breeding tanks because they appreciate Shady conditions.
Great tips!!
This was so helpful as I’ve had my first lot of fry and had no idea what I was doing as didn’t expect it and now. Daddy is under a log and hasn’t moved since yesterday so I’m wondering if there are more eggs again. Thanks again for sharing.
Glad I could help!
I had a male albino and a brown female, I got a cute calico mix
That is fascinating.
Lesson is never mess with a father's determination lol
Dude you got the best males
As for the Anubis. Its possible the the plant was grown immersed and those leaves are just dying off. The new growth looks good. Very common . Plant looks healthy. Just snip off the leaves that have the holes. Know sense letting the plant waste energy on them.
So cute 😍
Totally awesome!
One more bit of a tip for anyone breeding baby plecos. They will climb up the waterfall out of your hang on back filters and will live down in your hang on back filter quite happily. So check the pads carefully before you change them as often young plecos will be feeding off the filter.
amazing !!! I'm new into breeding ancistrus, but indeed i found an adult male in an inner-filter, so they do climb.
@@TheBSideDJ yep...and they live their really happy!!
Popping like popcorn
That’s one dedicated dad
almost every male ancistrus is dedicated.
I have so many questions!! I currently have a Common Pleco that has a HUGE belly, has had it for weeks now. I dont know if she is carrying or bloated. How long does it take for them to actually lay the eggs? Will she lay them if she doesnt have a cave like place? How long do they carry the eggs before laying?
Great Video 👍🏽
Thanks!
how many generations/spawns of plecos can be in a 40g and how often do you change the water, cuz its a lot of plecos I have and I feel like im doing weekly water changes cuz of the mulm.
Avoid direct light to the eggs hm an avoid that fine netting especially in front of pump as it blows waste onto them.
If u use an egg tumbler or an air stone in your breeder box that would have helped prevent fungus. Most of your eggs were good. Most times dads do a great job fanning and taking care of the eggs. 😊
Lately I've been leaving the eggs in the caves and putting the fry in a breeder box 2 days after hatching
Mr Josh De la Torre Hi Josh typically yes, most are cave spawners. The females typically are wider across the middle than the males. I would research the type of pleco you have. Feeding them well frequent water changes can sometimes help induce a Spawn. Good luck!
@@FoisyAquatics can you easily remove the adult male from the cave then ? I have one male in a cave guarding eggs, but this is my first breeding project with them, so i'm looking for the best information available right now.
Hi great video but how do you tell the male and female apart
Males have Bristles all over their face and mouth. I think the females only have a few bristles around their mouth.
Because it's his cave. The Male plecco invites the female over and once the eggs were disturbed - the cave cleaned out...etc the male no longer recognized his babies only his cave. Once eggs are fertilized by the Male- the female can go. The Male takes over and raises the kids. He probably dont recognize her scent anymore either which would allow him to identify his kids. Know what I mean? Good luck hope this helps - I read it on wikipedia
My bristle nose had eggs behind the the filter. As i was taking water out he was jumping out and going crazy. I did not know why. As i took the filter off I noticed the eggs and was so saddened at the stress he was going through. I put filter back and finished up quickly and left hom to his babies. I will never interfere ever again.
I have a batch of eggs I found yesterday. I’m hoping they will hatch they look like yours did . I only have 2 male black bristlenose and one female albino.
Love the channel keep it up
Appreciate it!
Thank you very much for your video I want to ask you that if snails and shrimps eat the pellicles eggs or not you make me happy that answer me that question
Shrimp's will keep them clean depending on what shrimp you have
that wood guide is for assure that when you perforating the glass there is not wobbling of the tip?
Yes
Hello again
I have some tiny recently hatched pleco eggs\babies!
They hatched on Saturday/Sunday.
They still have their egg sacks attached.
I am a first timer at this, my other clutch about 10 months back didn't hatch.
So a few questions.
How many more days should they take to absorb their egg sacks?
What do I feed them after they have absorbed the entire egg?
One of the females kicked them out of the cave, so they are being raised in a separate grow out tank.
Hello
I just found my first clutch off Pleco Eggs. They are currently segregated in a net breeder with good water airation
I'm new to it all so was wondering of you could help me?
How do I know if the eggs are fertilized? What does it mean when a few eggs turn white?
Thank you for your advice and assistance
The ones that go milk white are not fertilized. Good luck!
@@FoisyAquatics how do you know if it's male or female?
Hi I trying to find out if you can put salmon eggs in a egg tumbler
Bristlenose 💪👍🐠
can we do the same with armored plecko
Those are fertile, be careful using net breeder boxes for plecos, I've lost a load of pleco fry trying that approach, go for the plastic breeder boxes instead. They need something to attach to, but my theory on what's gone wrong is that while they're feeding on their yolk sacks other fish can still attack the yolk sacks through the mesh. I haven't witnessed any of that, but I have seen the adults going for the mesh, so it is just a theory. If I'm ever saving eggs I think I'll be setting them up their own tank, I've gone from about 30 fry the other day, to 18 yestersay, to less than 10 today in a mesh breeder box
What size tank would you reccomend?
20 gallon breeder for a trio
How long to hatch the fry guys?
What will happen if i just leave the eggs in the aquarium with other fishes?
Do common plecos breed the same way?
Not sure, but I believe not
In breeding ponds, common plecos (and maybe the sailfins too) will simply burrow tunnels into the mud banks of the pond and spawn therein.
breeding pleco's : very difficult to almost not possible to breed in fishtank as far as i can remember. the nature of this fish tells hem to dig caves into the sand on the sides of a river system.
my plecos are half the size of yours and lay about 4 times the amount of eggs you have. my cluthes normally run about 100- 125 every 30 days
what ratio males - females do you recommend ? I have a 1 meter tank with 2 females and 3 males, and no other fish... Is that good ? One male sometimes goes into the internal filter (from above), but also comes out again when wanted. Maybe there are too many males ?
@@TheBSideDJ I have 2 males and one female in a 75 gallon tank that's 4' long and I get I large clutch every 30 days. Find also out point of view 5 plants Amazon swords and anubias and driftwood my water is very Brown and tannic
@@mikekupetsky6879 i decided to seperate the male from my females, after taking care of the eggs/fry , because in that time, the male does often not eat during 10 days or even more. Aften seperation, he can recover and eat again, ... i want to prevent that he starts breeding again (often the samen dominant male breeds a lot), with another period of not eating.
Would of been easier to just to remove the snail.
How big of a tank would you recommend for breeding plecos
At least a 20 gallon for best results
Where did you get your egg incubator?
Link in the description :)
We’re did you buy that egg holder thing at?
Amazon I think
Isn't pleco eat their eggs
Pleco breeding jon
How much money would a breeder get from a pet shop for Bristlenose plecos ? I seen small ones being sold for $9.99 each at some pet shops
The store might sell albinos and chocolates for that price, but they'd likely give you no more than $4 for adult albinos and chocolates. If we're talking super reds, blue eyes, long fins, and green dragons, you can definitely get more money!
Part 3?
Soon!
Snails don’t eat eggs i can vouch for that if anything they look after and eat the debris and any eggs that haven’t been fertilised as snails are detritivore
not every snail is detritivore. Anentome helena eats other snails, so the question is : which snails do eat other stuff then waste and are a risk.. ? Apple snales ?
Where did you did the incubator?

How much you want for them?
I don't have them anymore!
How big is your tank
40 gallons
Daddy pleco does not like his eggs away from him
The used a rubber the first time I can’t blame him he wasn’t ready to be a dad
Let the dad guard the eggs till they hatch
Ya lately I've been just leaving them in the cave until they hatch
@@FoisyAquatics and then seperate them, or are the young safe without seperation ? In my case : in a 1 m tank with 2 adult females and 3 males ?
💪😎
I had 2 chocolate and they had 10 white babies and 10 chocolate babies
I have 3 females and one male.oh my God to many babiesI need to sale them and keep just a male.
I’ve been having a similar issue.. 2 of my females are PLUMP with eggs, one of the two is entering my big male’s cave but escape by morning and no eggs yet...
Any pointers? I haven’t been able to find much on the web
The Plecos need to be there to stop the problem that you had they can it
I have toomany baby they keep having babiesI much have two hundred babies I need to get rid of them.
If given enough time, the male would have come back, maybe few hours later, but he would have.
He jumped in as he is protecting them. Fathers do. I've got 31 babies. Albino myself. The male is protecting them 100%. I would of left them alone
Will give it a try on a future batch, but it's touch because the fry would easily go into the teeth of my sump overflow box
Why so much males? it would be easier to do one male and the diffrent females, not having one variety of female and multiple males that are diffrent varieties aswell
I think snails do eat fish eggs.
You should of left them alone
Those net breeder boxes are useless😠
