I just bred my first batch, so easy and fun. I put a cave in a community tank to check if the male was mature enough, 24hrs later he was in there with eggs! Moved him and wrigglers to their own tank to grow out.
I just want to say a huge thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in fish breeding. Your dedication and passion are truly inspiring! I'm new to breeding myself, and your content has been a fantastic resource to help me get started. I’d really love to connect and maybe even chat with you to learn more, especially from someone as experienced as you. It would mean a lot if you could get back to me-looking forward to hearing from you!
Thanks for the tips! I've gotten my pair to spawn many times but have always had trouble raising the fry. Definitely going to try crushing up the algae wafers when my pair spawns next.
One thing that can also work depending on your location is placing some driftwood or stones outside in the sun in a bucket to produce algae and diatoms growth . As they consume alot of micro organisms that live in algae aswell it gives a good balance.
I would have thought the cold water changes and frequent water changes would be an issue for the shrimp but definitely doesn’t seem that way. Nice video
An idea to get extra food for fry is placing driftwood or rocks in a bucket or container outside in the sun a week or so and letting it grow a lot of algae and microorganisms. Keeping it sealed is a good idea to prevent some pathogens too.
Hey Nick! Great video. I would like to know why are peppermint bristlenose harder to breed? I have bred common bristlenose but are peppermints a different Species because im looking at getting some to grow up and breed.
Great video! Interesting theory about the gut microbiome... would make a lot of sense. I had my first batch of bn babies about a month ago, and a week ago I found a big bundle of eggs that had been kicked out of the cave. I put them in a breeder box and they all hatched, babies look good. Would you try to add them back into the tank with the parents and their older siblings? Or do you think targeted feeding in a smaller tank for awhile would get them through?
I breed them aswell and live similar area to Nick. Yes we generally need heaters through winter especially if you want to keep them breeding. Ideally is same ranges as other fish from the Amazon region 20-28 Celsius. Ive found around 25-27 the best temp for breeding though with a cool waterchange. As an idea I've had them breed at the same time as Angel fish, Corydoras and Bolivian Rams in the same tank (community tank but didn't keep any fry really). But as for their tolerance, its likely partly will depend on your local specimens but I've personally had them survive our winters outside in a above ground pond. Our air temps through winter can drop to around 0 Celsius and slightly under and rise to 9-20 degrees by day. Didn't actually do the temp of my pond but I think it would have been atleast as low as 10 degrees maybe lower at times. In summer we often get to 40 degrees Celsius and inside tanks I've had them as high as 32-34 Celsius and bristlenoses were still fine.
I have 2 males and 1 female in a tank with 7 different caves of different shapes and sizes and some driftwood + plants. Kept them in there for over a year with cherry shrimp. Zero breeding happened. I feed Zucchini, canned green beans, repashy soilent green, and lots and lots of North Fin Kelp Wafers (their favorite).
Are they common bristlenoses? They should have bred by now if so. Take some caves away and one of the males aswell possibly as males can wipe out another's clutch. Could try with just 1 cave per male might make them claim one better. I personally generally do 1 male and 2 or 3 males. If its something like a peppermint/starlight, orange spot, Rio itenez etc they can have far later maturity. Pepper mints are usually 2 years plus before they breed and a good 4 inches.
I live in Florida so water temps 76/78°F and have chocolate bristle nose and 1 pair breed like crazy. Seems the male will come out after the cycle n eat as much as possible then he's right back on eggs.
I found BN easy to saturate your own market on, and growing them to 1.5-2” so they do well being moved…. That’s lots of water changes and food on a fish that sells so cheap. I’m on to try L046 and L201 as my L333 bred easily and those babies hard to sell I found.
Howdy, thanks for all your videos very enjoyable. Just wondering if you have ever bred otocinclus catfish and Any tips? working on a smaller tank/s that Oto’s seem pretty good in, they also seem good with other breeding in the tank they don’t seem to eat eggs. They were $25 a pop for a juvinille at the LFS in Canberra :s. Also anyone keen to sell some yellow shrimpy bois cheap Canberra hit me up.
Hello, I’m looking to do some breeding of probably some guppies as a hobby with my son, I’ve recently found your channel I live out near Ipswich did I hear right you have a shop front I’d love to come have a look
They say that if you have a breeding rack and you keep rare plecos in the same water with the BN and they breed the pheramones helps the other more expensive to breed as wel
I have 2 lemon blue eyed bristlenose plecos and the male usually makes a trip across the filter outlets and meets his girlfriend. Now i have like 150 babies and no clue what to do with them... Prolific little buggers. I wish a pleco cave was necessary but no its not haha. They just dig their own holes and egg it up
Can you do Bettas again? And maybe tell us how you prepare them to breed. The Betta videos and egg scatterers wcmm and danio have been great to watch! Everyone has had these fish at some point but probably have not bred them. I find your videos great , informative and very relaxing to watch keep it up!
@@mich421 I haven't had success with it , I have my females in a sorority, I am wondering if this the issue they don't seem keen on the male despite showing signs that they are ready to breed.
@@johnog8358 The male moves his fins constantly usually that is a signal. mine was young and the female was an adult and it had not reproduced for a year because the old male had died
they aren't showing any signs of stress all fins perfect and the colour super nice and bright. But I'll separate them and leave them for a week or two and put one with the male that's built a nest. The make is super keen and shows off extremely well under the nest.
I have 3, 1 L144 snow White female, and 2 gold ancitrus, breeding pair, got 3 batches, first where arround 20 ish, second 50 ish and last was over 80 baby's haha, i have them separate when i dont breed them, bc i raise the babys to sell
This is also a warning for the normal aquarium owner at home... NEVER EVER put a male and a female in the same tank. They WILL breed and never stop churning out babies. Even if you have no cave, they will find a place to do it. They might be basically in every tank out there and that is also the reason why you will have big problems getting rid of them. So if you dont want to breed them don't risk it ; )
Hey nick i want to ask a bloat problem which you talked in the video When i was performing eater changes weekly my cories experiencing bloat problem 1 by 1 only after water change none of the other had any problems but with cories only They couldn't sit flat 1 if they stop moving head or tail side slowly move upwards and i lost 6 pepper cories last year , and after that now i bought some albino cories very small size they were experiencing the same thing Help me please 🙏
Made a cave out of a pot from bunnings and a glass piece from a photo frame. Cut the pot in half long ways, cut the bottom out of the cut pot on one side only. Join the two pieces together, silicone it to the glass from picture frame wait for silicone to cure properly, place the cave on its side against the aquarium glass. Watch the whole process unreal.
I was surprised one day there were tiny bristle noses in my tank... Then later on I learnt they found a hollow in my wood deco, and laid eggs.. Sadly when I took it out to clean, the gurl was still holding on in the cave even after 30 minutes :( only found out after I picked up the log next morning
"For breeding purposes, can I place a group of 8 fish in a tank measuring 45x40x45 cm, including 4 undetermined young fish, 2 adult males over 2 years old, and 2 females aged 10 months, with several caves? Are these conditions suitable for breeding?"
I knew they where invasive in the southern us didn't know Malaysia had some invasive plecos my question what species is around u from what I've seen around florida and the southern states it's mostly common plecos they catch. You guys have the common plecos or bristlenose as invaders

Love your videos man! Been Feining for a new one recently
I would have thought the cold water changes and frequent water changes would be an issue for the shrimp but definitely doesn’t seem that way.
Nice video
It’s only a problem if the water that enters the tank comes in too fast, if you add it slowly shrimp will be fine as they have time to acclimate
Fascinating fish. I like the music selection. 😊
I was looking for this video, n saw your previous video on plecos 👍

Same species, just a different line bred colour morph.
When you do a water change do you add any water conditioner or anything into the tank and how often are you vacuuming out the poop ?
Awesome video this really helped
I just had to deconstruct my BN slam shack because I don't have the space to grow them out. One day hopefully I can actually produce them a bit
@KeepingFishSimple Music too loud, it should be in the background not competing with you.
or just skip it and listen to the aquarium sounds bubbling away
Agreed
