    Interesting to see that my video was used for this video. (I'm "that man")
    As for why i have so many??? (currently at 400+) In the early days there was nothing to buy if you had the official stuff, which wasn't much to begin with.
    So that started my love affair with bootlegs which were very hard to come by living in a small town in the Netherlands. And i basically never stopped buying them.
    And yes, i do realise i'm buying the same recordings over and over again. But i just love the pretty covers. ;)
    PS: the reason for so many copies of "Pearl Harbour" is that they are all on a different colour vinyl.

    This video was crazy convenient. Literally bought the Warsaw bootleg reissue by DOL a couple days ago thinking it was strange that it was stupid cheap. Thanks for the vid.

      There’s no way you’d have to spend a lifetime researching and trying to organize all the Pink Floyd bootleg slur made over the decades but something that would be more realistic is a new order bootleg video or series of videos focusing on the early career the mid career and the late New Order sessions seems like there should be a lot of material studio out takes instrumentals etc. but there’s only a couple of bootlegs floating around from technique for movement era nothing in the middle from the studio source

    Hi, Found your channel through the great 'Call on me' video.
    I think there is actually a reason to add 'As you said' to the bootlegs of RCA sessions. I didnt look every single bootleg of the RCA sessions, but seems it was added sometime after the release of the Substance compilation (on a 1989 CD bootleg).
    As it was one of the official studio tracks left out of Substance for who knows what reasons, it served as extra incentive to buy the bootleg.
    Actually both that song and the Pennine version of Love will tear us apart would get digital releases only much later: Pennine LWTUA on Permanent and As you said in the H&S boxset - which frustratingly didnt have the Pennine version... guess they decided 3 versions of LWTUA in the same boxset to be too much??

    The fact that Joy Division was only around for 3 years, and there are 3000 bootlegs, makes me happy that my favorite band, The Cure, has been going strong for over 40 years. I don't have to collect bootlegs of their guitar tech tuning, there are 1000's of quality bootlegs from The Cure. Of course bootleggers are bootleggers are there is some crap to wade through, but that's what Discog is for.

    • @JubeProductions
      @JubeProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Joseph Knecht While I appreciate your reply and I understand your great admiration for Joy Division, you need to just stop with the non-sense. Joy Division didn't give birth to the post-punk movement, it was a natural occurrence of the times.
      Robert Smith wasn't dicking about on a playground, then hear Joy Division and say to himself, "I want to do that too". He was playing in Malice in 1976 and already knew what he wanted. I have Demos from before they were signed to a label, around 1977. The Cure released their first single, Killing an Arab in December 1978 ,only 6 months after JD self-released An Ideal for Living.
      Robert Smith knew what he was, where he was going, and what he needed to do, without the help of Joy Division. Robert recognized their importance, an even dedicated a version of Faith to Ian Curtis the day he died.
      I love JD/New Order as well and I think both bands made a huge impact on music and music history, with influences lasting into this generation. But The Cure was way more influential, has way more variety to their music, and continues to this day playing and performing at the top of their game. I would dare to say more bands would list The Cure as influential over Joy Division. Simply because of The Cure's over 40 year legacy. In fact, hooks basslines seem to be very much inspired by Simon Gallup.
      Also, I don't know if you know this but Robert Smith was in Siouxsie and the Banshees while he was in the Cure. He took over guitar duties for McKay in 1979. He also played with them in 82-84, then did a side project with Severin called The Glove.
      But of course this is only my opinion and I am highly biased since I have been a Cure fan for over 30 years. So of course to me, The Cure has the utmost of influence.

    If I had seen this when I was 16, collecting all the available cassette bootlegs of unlistenable gigs (ah, Berlin Kantkino - one day someone will use software to make you playable), I would have exploded in joy. Really enjoyed this.

    • @highseervehk
      @highseervehk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you have the Kantkino show tape? I can digitize / clean it up for you, or is it not listenable at all?

    • @GuildfordGhost
      @GuildfordGhost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@highseervehk That's very kind of you but it's not an Audacity job, sadly. The cogs were not revolving uniformly on the original recording and every few seconds the tape speeds up and slows down, and gets worse and worse as the recording progresses. Someone must have software that can even out the drum beats and therefore get it back to normal speed, then have a soft autotune to restore any wobbles that remain.

    • @zeljkoloncar101
      @zeljkoloncar101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GuildfordGhost Celemony's Capstan can almost completely reduce wow and flutter (aka wobbles), though in my experience it also tried to fix parts that didn't need fixing, but overall the results were more than listenable. Then there's iZotope RX that has all sorts of tools for restoring vinyl and cassette recordings, including a wow/flutter remover which imo works better than Capstan. Waves Audio also made a few plugins like X-Crackle and X-Noise for the same purposes, and in my experience X-Noise works great for reducing cassette hiss.
      The way you described this recording now has me very interested in what it sounds like, and how bad it actually is. If you could upload it somewhere, I could try and have a crack at it, just for fun. If you can get a hold of all that software, naturally you can try it yourself, really I'd just like to have a look at the recording.

    • @GuildfordGhost
      @GuildfordGhost 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zeljkoloncar101 I would be delighted to. I will try and track down a copy. It's not just a bit of wobble or drag, it's extreme. As the tape progresses, every revolution speeds up to twice the speed and returns to normal. There must be software out there to restore it, even if it's manual mapping of where the beats should be and auto tuning the results.

    • @GuildfordGhost
      @GuildfordGhost 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zeljkoloncar101 Hi. Thanks for the reply. I've done some reading up, and people have tried to use Capstan on it with very disappointing results. I think it's just too far gone with current technology. Maybe one day. I can't find a single download of it online and my 1980s cassette copy is going to be under a mountain of boxes amongst many hundreds of cassettes in my parents' garage. I think the main project at the moment is going to be the guy who taped the show supporting The Stranglers in April 1980 (who has released a few tracks). His 1st generation recording is very poor, as the recorder was obviously on the floor and has mainly picked up bass frequencies and no high bands. but there has to be something in there that can be improved upon.

      HowardHandsTV The Clash would be a prime candidate. The “Vanilla Tapes” alone is enough for an interesting video, and being the type of band they are, I’m willing to bet they have enough bootlegs for at least a couple of installments. I really liked the video, and had a couple ideas/recommendations that ended up being way too long for a youtube comment. Best of luck and hope to see your channel grow.

    Saw Peter Hook and The Light back in 2018, it was such an amazing and somewhat emotional show. He started off with a New Order set before finishing off with Joy Division! In concert he really does sound similar to Ian. Ugh I wish I could go back

    Some video ideas
    - Killed By Death (KBD) series and releases that pretended to be part of the series
    - Stooges "Raw Power" album and how no one has been able to get its mix right
    - Boards of Canada's rare releases
    - Aphex Twin, so many intriguing aspects to his career and catalogue
    - Catherine Wheel, how the band evolved well with the trends throughout the 90's, singer had the look and persona, but they always missed the mark commercially

    • @HowardHandsTV
      @HowardHandsTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd love to do a video on Killed By Death and also Bloodstains. They've been on my list for a while.
      Theres actually a really good video on Boards of Canadas weird rarities and early tapes on TH-cam already.
      Stooges is a good suggestion, I'll add that to the list.

    100% wrong about Transmission man ... That is really the best version. Played it for for years as the "Spring is here roll down the windows" song - it stands the test. The synth work wasn't great, but the track is solid.

    The disk 1 of still is cool, the second disk is live but very Bad sounding, if You are looking for live material Buy "live at Paradiso Amsterdam" or "les bains douches"
