It’s always been easy to tear Victoria’s abilities as a popstar down because she never had big hits apart from ‘Out Of Your Mind’ in 2000, but she was actually more than capable of holding her own, but by the time she released her first album, Brand Beckham was bigger than anything and her public persona overshadowed the release - which still managed to debut in the Top Ten. However, it was an uphill battle from then on and she was probably desperate to struck gold with Dash but he let her down immensely. The hip hop tracks are really not good apart from a couple of exceptions - mainly ‘This Groove’ which is fantastic and fitted her well. The irony is that ‘Open Your Eyes’ (the electro pop album) was shaping up to be her best work yet and it got lost in all the mess. It’s very well regarded by the fan base, so forever grateful for the leaks. It’s a shame that all the public scrutiny took such a massive toll on her, she really didn’t deserve it.
I fully agree with you. It's also so sad to read Learning To Fly (her autobiog) & read the ending where she's so excited about the solo career, & then to read how she was perceived at the time. If Out of Your Mind had made it to #1 (which, i believe, it should have. idk what happened but that weekend surge for the other song was just insane with how major OOYM was at the time). A push in the US - that 2 step sound of the single could have been huge - etc. etc. etc. So many thoughts on that but you said it well. I love the leaks. I'm happy she's happy doing what she's doing now & realized that her passions feel more sustainable with a bigger return that being a pop star. She absolutely didn't deserve it.
I agree. I also love that she had a sense of humor in the video & some of the performances with the throne where she's kicking the dancer haha. That's the angle Kylie doesn't really do much with, so it's an ounce of differentiation. Well, hindsight & all.

Mel B should’ve gotten the hip hop deal. Vicky fits right into the electro-pop genre, like “Out of Your Mind” and “Not Such An Innocent Girl” were serviceable.
Let’s not forget…. “Let Your Head Go” Victoria would’ve been great as mentioned the electro-pop genre, but I think she would’ve been great in the dance genre as well.
I don't know if anyone else has pointed it out but... those "hip-hop" songs feel pretty reminiscent of the earlier J-Lo stuff. Like, is there an alternate world where VB could have had *her* career?
Yo! I'd love to hear what you can dig up about the story of midi war, the digital hardcore recordings mailorder, and Joel amaretto, the guy who took it over in 1996 to produce and distribute bootleg tapes and releases thru it without dhr even knowing. Lots of really good music and definitely an interesting story for sure. Love your videos, thanks for continuing to make such good stuff!
A deep dive into Q Lazzarus would be amazing. Interestingly the version of Goodbye Horses from the music video has an extended vocal at the very end which isn't even on the official extended version. I've searched everywhere for the true extended version with the extra vocals but they can't be found. Also before she died she allegedly gave a bunch of cassette tapes to a documentary maker.
How about John Oswald's "Plunderphonic" album from 1989? It was made entirely from uncleared samples and distributed free-of-charge, but all extant copies were destroyed by the Canadian Recording Industry for copyright infringement-- not for the music, but for the cover art, which spliced Michael Jackson's head on a nude woman's body.
- A dive into all the weird records that Kim Fowley was involved in. - The hard to describe career of the band Catherine Wheel. Started off with a couple of classic shoegaze records. Then went into a more commercial direction, buttrock-y even in some spots. Had some songs that sound like they at the very least should have been in movies, video games, TV, but they hardly got any placements.

The amount of research and effort that goes into your content is quality mate. You're like our very own version of Jenny Nicholson. My first album was Spice back in 96. Posh was my fav. Looking forward to your next video on how Skatman John got his name.
You're so real for pointing out how sibilant her voice is holy shit. Overall I still like Posh, I think she's pretty funny, but there have definitely been more than a few times where I've felt like I could feel her spit coming out of my headphones 💀
These days the Beckhams seem to understand that they make money by standing there looking pretty. I'm guessing this is one of the reasons why they're okay with that.
She didn't bankrupt her record label hahaha 😆 this was happening to many MANY labels in the uk at the time ..they simply had no idea what they were getting into and didn't realise how much promotion etc costs ...that has nothing to do with Victoria..it was happening ALOT
Given that this was around the time file-sharing sites were commonplace and streaming wasn't a thing yet, I'm not surprised. The music industry was experiencing a seismic shift in the 2000's and many labels did not live to see the end of that decade simply because they didn't know to adapt.
1. Great video. I will allow myself to share some facts we heard of back in its day: - First, thanks for the video and all the effort put on it. I have always dreamed of this kind of documentary regarding such projects like this one. - There was a time the album was known amongst fans for being called “Victoria Goes Urban”. I kinda remember Damon called it that way as well. - When discarded, Damon Dash wanted to give those songs out to someone else since he kept the masters and instrumentals. Redo the lyrics and the vocals. He said they were great songs that had costed so much money to produce to not release them. - Mel C called ‘It’s that simple’ crap. - There are some other versions of This Groove and one that sounds more like the System original. - My Love is For Real was expected to be that kind of Kylie big hit for Victoria since Van Helden was doing a remix for it. I wish you would have elaborated more on My Love is for Real the studio version since it sounds really cool, and on some other stuff from the DVD since That Dude was great as well as Me and You. It will be nice to have your opinion on those great tracks.
The two unreleased albums really did suit her. She always like soul, r&b. Both albums would have had her hitting America and much more. Her music career would have taken the craziest turn for the next few years. She could have had the world in the palm of her hands.
Victoria is an absolutely stunning, glamorous woman with a drop dead gorgeous husband who adores her…there was never any need to try singing after the Spice Girls The Spice Girls were a vibe. They were never about vocals.

13:15 OMG This made me laugh so hard at work. All of the early 2000 collaborations where white women go hip hop were so ridiculous! GWEN STEFANI! Such a trashy blinged out era looking back.
Difference is that Gwen Stefani actually has talent and made good music, none of which applies to Victoria Beckham. Also this "white women non-hip Hop artists going Hip Hop" stayed around for a while; remember Fergie? Or when Miley Cyrus tried being a rapper back in 2013-14? Besides, the early 2000s era was good and better than anything today.
Oh, the dark days of TOTP. Your Spice Girls video was one of your very best and is criminally under viewed. It's great seeing you return to this subject matter.
Victoria's career could have gone in such an interesting direction, and her 2nd unreleased album really seemed more like her sound.
I would have accepted Posh Spice as an electro pop Kylie Minogue clone. That first song on Top of the Pops was pretty good.
Both sound really good, imo the best solo songs for her, above all the rest
