Well done. I think you're approaching things correctly. It needs to suit YOUR requirements. In my opinion there's no need to spend a fortune, you can do the same things whatever its age. We value practicality, & our small van was the only motorhome in Mousehole harbor car park.

Stick to your budget Steve, don't be swayed buy all the nice shiny expensive vans. At the end of the day its about having fun and enjoying yourself, and don't forget about the running costs.

I converted my Transit mk8 L4H3 jumbo and I use it as my daily driver, it's so easy to get down narrow rural lanes, but still big enough to be very comfortable inside!
We've travelled the UK and Europe, and never used EHU or campsites except for a few CLs in England.
I fitted 500w of solar panels, 300ah lithium battery and a 2.5kw inverter.....we can stay off grid indefinitely with all the mod cons from April to November 😊

As I live and holiday in Scotland I went for the smallest van I could get away with. A Transit Custom long wheelbase. It’s proved to be prefect for getting down the narrow lanes and parking in town centres.
With two adults and a dog space is extremely tight.
From what you have said in this video I can only recommend that you go for the smallest van you are comfortable with.

Very interesting. We are in a very similar position. Just don't know what we want or need. Our first venture and we are so confused. We have allowed until next year to give us more time.

My tip would be to look at lots online or in person and if you can hire one for a week, so you can find out if it has what you want. Some look great until you start to use them, like hassles making the bed, climbing over someone to get to the loo etc. Lots to think about - happy hunting!

We have a 20 year old LWB High roof Sprinter minibus, formerly a Patient transfer vehicle with a local ambulance company, that has clocked over half a million Kms (about 315,000 miles). We converted it into a fairly basic campervan for just over GBP5000 (including the van) as that was our budget at the time. Its pretty comfy and has all we need in it, no shower, but does have a toilet/washroom and its gasless. We're now looking at maybe getting something a little bigger so we can take the ebikes along without having to park them outside overnight. Like you, its trying to find something that ticks as many of the boxes on our wish list, but within budget, plus isn't too big to park in the drive etc. We are even considering converting a box body or box body ambulance shipped over to New Zealand from the UK. Its all about finding the right van for YOU, not what others think you should get, though some of the comments about some manufacturers are relevant - some rust badly compared to others - but also it depends how they have been looked after and where they have been. Having lived in Yorkshire for over 25 years then moved further south, it was very noticeable how much more corrosion road salt caused further north. We went from replacing exhausts every 18 months to over 5 years, here in NZ in 20 years I've never had to replace an exhaust! An older vehicle from the right owner, with service history etc can often be a lot better buy than something a bit more modern/lower mileage with unknown history. Best of luck with your search!
