Normally I'd say not a big deal, don't upgrade. But in this particular case they really did improve so many aspects of this series. Do it!

They improved everything that I couldn't care less about. :´D
I have the X100F and I hate quite much about it. I don't like the autofocus in low light, since there is none. I also completely detest the user interface (too complicated and confusing) and the handling. And the ISO doesn't behave anything like I'm used to in other cameras. I doubt any of these things have been fixed in the V.
Lens sharpness? Whatever. Tilt screen? Whatever. Better ISO dial? Whatever.
      That's how I feel about it. ;)

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Exactly the improvements I wanted over my X100F, but I would miss the D-pad.

The X100F is actually not that bad either if you know what you are doing. That said, the V is a really good upgrade and it makes life a lot easier for video work. This could be a really nice B roll camera in a professional setting.

  • @arloharnish

I got one of these cameras a year ago and have been using it consistently. I went from EOS to Fujifilm exclusively with the X100V. It's got my favorite focal length. (Well, I also like 40mm) and it's just amazingly easy to use. The most advanced thing I did was program the buttons for easy adjustments with settings. Everything else is easy to learn and to use. As you've probably heard before, the film simulations are great. (Except for the two black and white settings. I can't seem to figure out how to make it more contrasted. Anyway, I haven't really even begun to investigate that. It might be an easy fix.) The size and the classic nostalgia (It's shaped as if it were a smallish Lica) are also great things about it. It feels very inconspicuous and light on your body or in your pocket and it's simplicity lends itself to the classic photographers (who I admit I'm not too familiar with. Stephen Shore is more my thing.) But my point is that you feel like a street photographer how ever you're using it. And you can hearken back to 80 or so years that have passed when street photography was just starting it's maiden voyage in the context of history. It all feels like it's inherent to the camera in your hand.

@SwitchRich I have an x100F and the attractive thing about it is the size and the way the camera feels like it disappears when you use it (as in it just gets out of the way). I love that I can throw it in my work bag or jacket pocket and not have it take up much space, and the 35mm equivalent is my favorite focal length for street photos anyways. The improvements here look huge - I definitely missed weather sealing in the F in particular - so I'm definitely looking into the potential upgrade here.

  • @jkneuper
    @jkneuper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

At the start Chris talks about the format of this episode (more about the experience and how you feel than the specs) and suggests it may be more useful than the traditional review video style, and I couldn't agree more. This is exactly what I need. I can glance at a spec sheet and tell if it meets my technical requirements. But this helps me determine whether I want to hold the camera in my hands, use it to take photos, and then do things with said photos. I watched the video, and now I do. Very much.

I owned a X100 (first generation) for various years and enjoyed using it. Small, neat and decent. Great for traveling light.
Just sold it recently and did not yet decided if I buy a used X 100 F or the X 100 V. Read a lot of articles stating yes "must do", and other others "not needed".
But this video made the difference as you nicely compared image quality F vs V = so now it's clear: I will buy the X100V (to accomplish my X-T2).
THX for a really nice video! Well done!

Since cell phone cameras, people seem to love these small “real” cameras. So easy, great results, and a renewal towards the art of photography. I have dedicated myself to in-the-moment photography using the Panasonic GX8 a 15mm f/1.7, silent mode, shooting B&W, and duplicating in color. Looking forward to buying the X100V and an Olympus Pen-V. Maybe someday my grandkids will get serious about photography.

Having used the X100 and X100S I got fed up with the lens wide open a bit like the interchangeable prime XF 35f2👎. Once I saw that they had upgraded I bought a 100V s/h, 300 shots for £999/ or $1300 in immaculate condition and I can’t stop using it. Just have to explore the digital zoom feature before I shell out on the converters but so far the lens is so good you can crop fairly heavily I may not need these.

FINALLY, they upgraded the lens to something appropriate for a camera in this price point!
Nice job on the review; you guys hit on everything. I like how Chris was able to admit that 35 mm eq. just isn't for him without bashing it too much or stating as a fact that it's not wide enough, for example.
How about making a monochrome-only model that drops video, but adds IS? That'd be the last nail in Leica's coffin...

Great, interesting video for a great camera that's on my wishlist. I had the X100S and tested the X100F and I know quite well the AF weaknesses of those two models. When you say the autofocus is improved, you mean improvement coming from the new sensor+processor+software+new lens... or does this include a new tech AF motor(s) as well? Thanks!

    Hey there!
First off great review. I love watching your guys videos.
Second, any chance do you know whether the X100V would be compatible with the WCL-X100 version 1?
    Thanks!

Really making me consider selling my XE3 and buy one of these. If I didn’t shoot sports with a zoom sometimes I would definitely be getting one

i agree 100% specs can be found everywhere, the important stuff is the one that you can know only once you use it

Excellent as a sole camera, and also excellent to pair with a FF+70-200 rig. I added an inexpensive Arca shoe combined with a better grip, excellent for one-hand shooting. BTW the color histogram, programed to the center button in front lever is really convenient.

I am just getting into photography to document my nature treks to Sweden and the like. I have to say your photography reviews are the best on TH-cam. I just need to learn the technical aspects of shooting photos - so I can understand what you are saying. LOL. I work as a Chemical Engineer in Saudi, and it would be nice to photo document that landscape/culture as well - beyond my iPhone. Finally, I am thinking of acquiring this camera over the Leica Q2 as a first camera. Is this good decision? Thanks so much.

I am still using the x100s, which brought back memories of my first rangefinder camera and helped me enjoy photography again. XT3 or the x100v? the prices are similar. Thanks for the video.
