As a longtime Canon DSLR user, I decided to go for the X-E4 as my entry into the mirrorless world, and I’m so happy I did. I totally understand the gripes many have about certain issues (lack of physical focus mode switch button, etc.), but I am absolutely loving this camera and the Fujifilm system. I’ve pretty much shelved my 5D entirely in favor of this because I can truly take it anywhere and shoot discreetly and efficiently. Film simulations and recipes are a dream come true for someone who used to shoot film before digital blew up, and this little camera has awakened my creative impulses again!
Watching those videos, even though I'm perfectly happy with my camera for years now. You guys are the best.

4:28 you can configure the touch screen to use on the the right half or lower right quarter while using the EVF, preventing nose activation and enabling function swipes at the same time.

Could you maybe do a comparison someday between current day cameras and those of days past (say 6-10 years old), and which differences in cameras *actually* matter to you and which not so much (sensor quality, number of shots per battery, EVF vs optical, image stabilisation vs none, etc.) and maybe even a blind test on which images were produced with what camera? (possibly including personal enjoyment of using the camera too? joy of shooting?)
I'd really like to see an NEX-7, NEX-6, a6000, and a6100/6400/6600 comparison. I can say for sure that the autofocus on the NEX-6 is laughable compared to the a6500 I currently have, as is the video quality.

I went from the good old D700 to this X-E4. Image quality difference is negligible. But shooting experience is much better. LCD eye piece has all the stats on eye like a HUD. Having a live histogram is probably the biggest difference which makes dialing in right exposure no longer a trial and error affair. Newer camera is also much snappier and faster especially with electronic shutter. It's like having a larger point and shoot that makes DSLR quality images. It's pretty neat.
I like to see the Canon Dsr 50mega pixel against one of the newer high mega pixel camera.
Yeah maybe even new APS-C vs old FF comparison. When I look with the Dpreview image comparison tool (and other comparisons), it seems that modern APS-C sensors equal older higher end FF sensors which is surprising. Only at very high ISO do you see a difference worth mentioning. Many of those older FF cameras are still sold for over double the price of some of these APS-C's.
"X100V with interchangeable lenses" is exactly the reason I bought the XE4. I use it primarily with MF lenses and I found that I don't really have a problem with limited customizable buttons. I set fn button to focus mode selection, AEL to view mode selection, and 4 swiping shortcuts to other adjustments. Yes, you definitely have to rely on swiping shortcuts on this camera but fortunately the lcd has great response so it works flawlessly.
One biggest flaw of this camera, though, is the auto-flipping screen. The XE4 uses the eye sensor next to the EVF to detect if the screen is tilted all the way up. Then the camera auto-flips the screen so you get the front facing selfie screen. However, you don't need to tilt the screen all the way up to activate the flipping. Sometime when I shoot at waist level with screen at 90 degree, my body gets too close to the sensor, causing the screen flipping inward, ruining the shot. So far there seems to be no way to fix this.
I'm loving my X-E4. I shoot for dollars full time and this is my 13th or 14th body since I switched over from Nikon in 2014 and while I've liked almost all of the Fujis I've owned, THIS is the camera I've waited for since I got my hands on my first X-E2....a tiny X-E body with a low profile flip LCD. I can control the Exposure Triangle from outside of the menu. I use AF-S, AutoISO and AutoWB, so just like with an old film body where I wasn't switching ISO shot to shot, but Roll to Roll (rarely) so as long as I have access to AV, SS and +/- EV...I'm a happy camper with fewer buttons and dials to bump.
FWIW, I saved myself $170 (US) and cancelled the Fuji Grip and Fuji Thumbrest STILL on backorder because I found that the Lensmate LM-XE3 thumbrest fits this camera PERFECTLY...I also purchased a FlipBac stick on G4 'grip' for the front and now it doesn't feel like my old minolta SRT body all flat on the front. :)
I'm even considering selling my 'work' X-PRO3 and getting another of these to use all the time (and a backup of course.)
The only thing I think Fuji really dropped the ball on this is that the ribbon that connects the LCD is VERY exposed when the LCD is out away from the camera. The X-PRO3 has a protective bit over the ribbon on it's (odd) flip down LCD....AND the strap lugs are the dumb X-A1 style. I put two layers of electrical tape on the ribbon to help protect it and made 'strap extenders' to use with my Peak Design Anchor Links. Problems solved. :)
I’m getting one for the same reasons. I have more complicated cameras (XT3s) for doing paid work. I just want something small and simple that I can use like I did the point and shoot film cameras I used to use back when I had never heard the word aperture and knew nothing about shutter speed, etc.
This small, simple camera with 2021 tech innards is exactly what I need to capture friends and family photos like I used to back in the day. The simplicity of yesteryear with today’s immediacy, raw editing, etc.
Fuji knows who they made this camera for.
That's great to hear about the stick-on grip. I wasn't sure if they woukd stick. That is the dealbreaker for me as this looks so unenjoyable to use compared to my XE2. I hope there is one that works for the thumb too, but the hotshoe one would suffice. The controls don't bother me (except the focus switch), so this is suddenly back on the radar.
Do you think the EVF is better than tye XE3's? That was a major reason I went back to an XE2.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy I had the LM-XE3 on the X-E3 (that I'm selling on the FB marketplace) but they are almost impossible to find now as Lensmate has discontinued them when the X-E3 was discontinued and they ran out of their first batch. I've sent them a note that the older model grip fits the new model better than the Fuji version looks like it will (at least for MY hand) and hopefully, they'll order another batch The JJC model for the X-E3/X100V looks like it will fit OK as well...but it's profile is a lot closer to the one Fuji is making. I prefer my thumb closer to the VF than the +/-EV dial.
Haven't noticed a huge difference in the EVF between the X-E cameras, but as long as I can see to compose and shoot, I'm happy. No serious 'video lag' in any case and none of them (not even my X-PRO3) are as nice as the HUGE EVF experience on my old X-T1 bodies, so it's all a compromise. :)

I got the XE4 last week and I had the same concerns about the lack of buttons, dials and front grip. I'm so used to my XT3, I wasn't sure if it would be workable. But in my real life experience with the camera, it works great for me and the way I use it. It's a 2nd camera that I keep in my purse, so I have it with me all the time (that was the goal) and I use it for street photography, or anywhere I would have used my phone camera, but I get much higher quality photo's. It's not for everyone, but it's absolutely perfect for me and I'm finding it a joy and fun to use.
I really think this would be the best use case for this camera. A second camera if you already have a bigger Fujifilm camera and lenses.
@@daxvolfan That's it exactly. It wouldn't be my first choice for a camera, but it shines as a smaller, lighter 2nd camera.
I guess this makes sense in the way I am thinking of an XF10 as a 2nd camera to my XE2. I used to have an XE1 as a 2nd camera to an XT3 and took it less seriously and appreciated the size more.
The flaw with that reasoning is that I can do that very same thing with my X-E3, which is the same size as the X-E4 but has all of those external controls that are missing from the new model. So why did those very useful external controls have to be removed?
@@rudiphoto It's not a flaw in reasoning for me. The XE4 has the flip up screen which is more important to me than the dials and buttons. So, agreed - not a perfect camera, and it clearly isn't for everyone, but it suits my purposes to a T.
I purchased this camera because I fell in love with the X100 but I wanted the option to use different lenses. Not at all disappointed. I'm used to shooting with fewer external controls so whatever the minimal design is fine. I will probably move to an X-T4 later on and I'll have all the lenses! Can't beat the Fujifilm built-in film emulations.

Thanks for the detailed overview. I don't mind the minimalism if I'm able to customize controls from the menu, but I wonder how useful those video features are without a stabilized lens, unless you have the camera on a tripod?

Ive been using this camera for about a month after upgrading from my old canon t3i. I am not a commercial photographer, but mostly street/fine art for which I wanted a camera that I could take EVERYWHERE with me but also grow with me as I decide to pursue other types of photography. But in general I knew that I wanted something close to 35mm because thats what I started out on with film. The xe4 kit was perfect for me as someone entering the Fuji ecosystem. I don’t need a ton of dials. I actually felt like my t3i was just too,,, clunky. Too many buttons dials moving parts. The flash also failed on that camera. I much prefer the simplicity to the xe4. I usually only shoot in AFS which for me the focusing is more than fast an accurate. The joy stick is fast and the top dials are tactile. I wish the display connector was engineered to be hidden, however the display itself is great quality and the hinge is very sturdy and smooth. Water would have a hard time getting back there since the screen is perfectly flush. I would recc this camera whole heartedly. Especially for people who want to upgrade from an old dslr and want something to SHOOT everyday but also have the flexibility to change lenses
Exactly where I am. I have an old Nikon 3200. It feels too big to carry around, especially on trips. I want a minimalistic camera with the option to change lens, if I want to.

After a few weeks of use I found the grip to be a non-issue for me.
My biggest complaint by FAR is that the exposure comp dial moves way too easily when taking in/out of a bag
Ouch. That's a major issue. Should affect everyone if it is standard. Previous XE cams have really nice solid exp comp dials which I have probably never accidentally moved.
I love this camera, I love the minimalism! I am planing to buy it as a support camera to my x pro2 and use it with a small gimbal as well!
Great content and advice guys - one of my favorite channels on youtube. I know its been a while, but i have had a few chances to look at the X-E4. I run three Fuji's - X-H1, XT30 and (gasp) X-E1. I am really struggling on this new camera - I am always looking for the great travel camera to retire my X-E1 from travel duty. Handling is a bit fiddly - lack of two dials is tough. It feels ok - but you definitely have to purchase a grip / case for it not to risk damaging it. Compared to my X-E1 - autofocus with even my older lenses was extremely quick. I am not really sure what i should do here. I know someone will say you have an XT30, but i has about as much sex appeal as a fat kid in a baby blue tux and ruffles at prom.
Please keep measuring things in Nocts. I love it. In fact, I may have possibly referred to this measurement unit to some non-photographer coworkers and received some strange looks. Regardless, it always brings a smile to my face. Also, Jordon, don't let Chris hair-shame you!
This camera and 27mm lens combo makes so much more sense when put next to the Minolta CL(E). The size and look of the cameras are so similar and both are also usually paired with a 40mm (FoV) lens.
If you set the camera to manuel focus, can you use the AEL/AFL button as a back focus button? Thank you for sharing this informative video.
When you guys review a camera, it would be great if you can get two copies of the camera when you do so, and use one of them to video the segment. That way, video quality & charactor of the camera can be seen throughout the TH-cam to give the correct impression. If you can't acquire a second copy, try videoing on it's next closest stablemate that would indicate closest its video character. But surely DPReview has such a huge name, you can get two camera copies for said purpose?
I seriously considered the X-E4 to replace my X-E2s, and keep my Fuji X system reasonably current. The last Fuji X body that I bought being the X-Pro3. But just thinking about it, I can sort of trace my move away from Fuji to their move towards PASM. This also holds true for the GFX system where I feel little need to move from my 50S and 50R to either of the 100 bodies, also in prt because I don’t need 100MP. My EOS R5 fills the X and GFX roles well if we’re in the PASM world.

Spot on. I was looking forward to this camera maybe replacing my XT2 but with the elimination of the back dial, the focus mode switch, and the camera having zero grip I quickly changed my mind. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
X-T2 is still more than enough today
Got the XT2 and going to get this as a second camera. Honestly, I don't care a lot about the dials. If I want professional work I go for the XT2, but the point-and-shoot approach of this camera is what gets me.
Why would you replace your high end X-T2 with a more entry level camera like the X-E4?

Great review. I agree that it does not have much of a handle. However, a simple wrist loop prevents any accidental drop of the camera. As a first time Fuji user and a mirrorless user, I find the camera to be excellent. It feels like a larger point and shoot with sensor larger than any of them which is just what I had wanted. And it's a great deal with the lens, the 2nd gen 27mm which is 40mm 35mm equivalent. I prefer the slightly wider normal to the even wider non-interchangeable 35mm on the x100v.
I also use a wrist loop. I took it from a Fujifilm XP camera I have, simple and effective.
I’m also a mirrorless shooter (Sony A7IV) and my Xe4 is my first Fuji. I have the thumb rest and that nice Peak Design wrist strap and it feels totally secure! What an awesome little camera!
Excellent camera. I use it more than my other cameras and I don’t miss the grip because it is light and mostly lives on a strap around my neck
I prefer the controls of the X-E2s, but the tilting screen, improved AF and combo with 27mm v.2 makes this a better camera and ideal as a complement to my X-Pro3. One neet feature I have not seen in reviews is that you can save a few more function settings in customs settings with the X-E4. This includes auto ISO, AF-S/AF-C/MF and type of focus assist. This partially makes up for loss of Fn buttons.
I understood that the front dial can be used to toggle between ISO, Aperture etc,. right? Like you can do on a T30?

I have the xt4 when I switched from the xt2 but personally the colors and the focus was better on the older Fuji sensor like on my xe3 and xt2

It's sad that X-T30 didn't receive an AF update like X-T3 did, that's not very kaizen considering they have the same internals.
Yeah, it's a concerning new strategy by Fujifilm. I can understand it with the XT30 so it doesn't harm XS10 sales. But it's crazy they have also neglected their flagship X Pro 3.
Better to stay one sensor behind imo, to avoid inevitable dissapointment as kaizen is dead. That word shouldn't even be used again.

That's the appeal for me as a hobbyist, beginner. I don't want to have an abundance of control, I just want my photos to look nice and have some freedom for creativity, that I don't get on my phone. Since purchasing a full frame and lens at a nice price, its just overkill for my intent and is crippling my creativity. I like to shoot everything and anything without a hindrance and this X-E4 is drawing my attention. A bit more flexibility then the X-100V appeals too.

Does xe4 have a digital gimbal like in xt200?
As a XE3 owner, which is a great travel and general purpose camera, I had planned to upgrade to the XE4. I can live without IBIS, I can live without WR (but I view this as a lost opportunity with the new WR 27 and f2s), but the removal of the rear dial and the front and rear grips has put form over function, vanity over ergonomics (see Chris's point at the 2 min point). It is too minimalist for me. I now intend to stay with my XE3 and the 27 Mk I instead up upgrading the XE4 and 27 Mk II. Pity, but with virtually no difference in image quality and a down grade in ergonomics, it is not worth the cost of change.
The firmware updates alone made me swap from the X-E3 to the X-E4, it is excellent. The AF is way better too.
I agree with "form over function". Departure from what made the XE line great - being a bit like mini X Pro cameras.
They added an external grip attachment for the XE4 which is actually far more substantial than the grip that the XE3 had

Bought XE3 for that reason... worse AF and display but handling is so much better. And also there are tones of deal for this camera.
Agreed. Half the price of the 4 where I am. Not a big difference in focus speed for modern lenses but old focusing ones like the new 27mm may be much faster on the 4. The old one and 18 are certainly much faster. I am tempted to get a 3 but prefer the 2.
Hopefully this bombs and they make an XE4S to fix all the mistakes. But I doubt it. Fuji have lost the plot and I think this will be the last XE.

Since pre-orders were the largest seen by Fujifilm and Fujifilm have said that they could not meet demand at launch, then it has not "bombed", far from it.

I thought about this to use for video alongside using my xpro3 for stills and therefore have a good lense kit, though the xs10 sounds cool.

It is the same as the X-Pro3 and X-T4.

One often overlooked thing about the X-E series cameras is that they get no firmware updates (or only to fix major issues) where cameras like the X-T series seem to get regular feature upgrades. I had an X-T20 that I upgraded to an X-E3 because i prefer the rangefinder format, but while the X-T30 gets support for things like FUJIFILM X Webcam, the X-E3 doesnt, despite being nearly the same camera. I still love the rangefinder format, but im wishing I'd stuck with the X-T series for more firmware love.
The X-E3 had firmware updates. It is on 1.30 from September 2020.

Owning an X-E3, you set touch to the right only.
I agree the add on grips should have been traded for built-in ergo, IBIS, a rear dial and a bit more buttons.
I'd gladly pay for that and still buy the extra grip to go with the 70-300.

Fujifilm can't fit IBIS in it. Ergonomics are subjective, I prefer my X-E4 over my X-E3.
What about video AF? Is it good like a6100 or a6400? Anyone plz help... My XT200 Video AF is worst enough that i need to change it asap
I really want to get into the Fuji system! I use A73 & A6600 to film weddings. I love their focusing! But I really want 4K/60 and Eterna.
Try the custom S-cinetone settings on your a7iii (lots of TH-cam tutorials.) I don't think it's worth moving systems for 4K 60. Sony's A7IV will likely be incredible and have 4k60 and possibly 4k120. I'd wait for that. Fujifilms have plenty of their own issues haha

Bought this for its minimalistic design and its weight. If someone wants all possible buttons, there are other great models. Lack of buttons don’t bother me at all.
I know the DISP-BACK button, returns your focus point back to the center of your screen! on the Fujifilm XE4, But how do you make it stay there permanently?!?! Thank you. : - )

This is a great second camera. Obviously not the same as an X-S10 or a7s, but it’s for me. Minimal is great 👍 Sample images look good. Maybe Fuji could bring the price down by a couple hundred 🤔

No it's not an 'X100' with interchangeable lenses. It's not a bad compact MILC, however once you get into using flash the X100 series really comes into its own. Most users will never understand, let alone take advantage of, what that leaf shutter is actually capable of. For those people, the X-E4 is probably the better choice. For me, an X100 is the only choice in a compact-ish camera.

Really like the compact design for on the go always on camera. The one thing is that im a sony user, can you make a video comparing this camera to sony apsc? Or a video talking about the interface of sony vs fuji ? Does this have bracketing continuous shots like sony? Thanks!
+1 I will be keeping my toe in the Fuji pool with the XE2 but will probably get something like the A6100 next. Faster focusing, a grip, Sigma lenses....
@@blood_n_guts_murphy does fuji has exposure bracketing ? I have sony a6000 and sony a7iii, considering switching my apsc line for fuji. The tracking is not necessarily a deal breaker, it is still not enough to catch my dog running through weaves and jumps.

One question about thumb grips: is there a risk of them damaging the hot shoe? Thanks!
I read that some third-party thumb grips don't sit flush against the body and can exert leverage forces on the hot-shoe if caught when taken out of a bag or it is pulled by something.
Yes. Its best to put some paper tape or anything else under the grip. Otherwise they are fine, I have always used them on Fujis and never had an issue. I think the tape under is to protect the electric connectors, but it may also help keep it securely in place.
I also recommend watching the video of Omar Gonzalez where he talks about the cancellation of his Fuji X-E4 preorder because of the step backwards in terms of lack of buttons and the operation.
I like how Fuji makes all these very different cameras but they all have the same sensor and processor so you can pick what you like and have largely the same performance and image quality.
I recently switched to X-Pro3 for weather-sealing, and passed my X-T30 to my family. I worry about them touching the dials accidentally so much. It would be less of a problem with the X-E4.

I’ve had the XE4 for a couple weeks now and scrolling the dial during playback scrolls through my photos ALL THE TIME when I’m trying to zoom just like you said. Super annoying!
Can you please explain this a bit? Does this happen only when the camera is in playback mode for the few seconds after a picture is clicked? I suppose the defined/customised options reappear once the camera shifts back to shoot mode.
Yes, this...its driving me insane.
@@homesavvytech This happens in playback mode. When you review photos, the front dial can do 2 things. First you can zoom in and out by turning the dial, or, if you push down the front dial, the dial now works as photo scroller. The problem is that the dial is quite sensitive so people accidentally push it down while scrolling causing it to jump between zooming in or moving to the next photo.
@@natekong3596 Thanks for clarifying. I tried the dial on the T30 just to get an idea how the push down works and it did appear to have very little resistance and I now understand exactly what you are referring to. BTW, the front dial on the S10 does not have a push down function
@@homesavvytech the nice thing about previous cameras is that the rear dial would zoom and nothing else. I think the front dial would scroll pictures only but I’m not certain on that. I miss the rear dial on the X-E4...

I have both the X-E3 and X-E4. The X-E4 is the superior camera for me by far.
The problem i have with the XE4 is with almost any other lens - other than the 27mm f2.8 wr you’re going to have handing issues. So is it really a system camera?
I have no such issues with a 100mm f2.8 on it.
Good informative film, thanks. I’m interested in the X-E4, but it does, as mentioned, seem to lack a few useful (essential ?) controls. Think it might frustrate me quickly. Perhaps I’ll look again at the x100v, but ofc, u can’t change lens …. ‘Guess even the Fuiji world may not be perfect ?!
Depends what you mean by essential. You can change aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Other than a shutter release button, what else do you actually *NEED* to take a photo?
Could make a good, simple and light travel camera.
Depends how you carry it. The older lighter XE cameras can easily be held with one finger and thumb, whereas the XE4 only seems practical for wearing a neck strap. Its a far less versatile camera ergonomically.
And the exposed LCD ribbon and overheating may make it unreliable and dissapointing. Fuji didn't improve overheating like Sony did with the 2nd generation A6xxx cams. The XE3 also overheats, especially when traveling near the equator, but the rubber grips conceal it.
How difficult would this camera be looking through the viewfinder for a left-eye dominant individual?
It's the usual squash your nose against the LCD thing. As a long time X-E user I adapted to using my right eye. Fortunately the dioptre has a wide enough range for the EVF to be sharp.
Thanks for your review. Yes the reduction of button is what I am seeing as common concern. I was going to get my first fujifilm in XT30 and then this got released and looks great (similar to X100V as have used that of friend). You praised X-T30 but then said this has latest firmware. Does that make a very positive change in contrast to XT30? Latest firmware will not be there in X-T30. Both have same sensor? Sorry a little novice but hope to get answers as confused between the two. Primary objective is photography and not videos. But that option also good.
I am not sure, but contrast won't be affected. Just extra film simulations and the latest focusing algorithm.

@@twocupsstudio there are some annoyed fujifilm users who own the X Pro 3 (I assume the XT30 too), who haven't had firmware to speed up focusing. Maybe they will get it in future, maybe not. Kinda makes me want to try Sony whose focus is the best. I think the XT3 has had the focus upgrade, but not 100% sure.
@@qualo99 XT30 had latest update in Feb 2021. Not sure if that improved the focusing speed. Strange sony makes Fujifilm sensor but sony is level above fujifilm and others for this aspect

all the XE4 needs left is a hybrid viewfinder, a built in flash (For emergency purpose) and a tilting LCD, and it'll be a perfect camera at least for me. just an opinion though.
That would increase the cost. The launch price of the X100V was a LOT more than the X-E4.

Thank you for the review. I wonder why Fujifilm bothers to even try to sell this camera XE4 where there are so much disadvantages. Sooner or later those vacationers who bought this camera will regret that they had been taken for a ride. I was considering on buying the XE4 for its beauty but simplistic features but after watching so many negative reviews, I will give it a miss.
You mean the XE-4 that was so popular that it sold out? You clearly haven't used one, your loss. Nobody is being taken for a ride.

It's crazy how much the X-Ex series has moved down-market in terms of features, but up-market in terms of price. The buyers of the X-E3 are not the same buyers of this new camera and that's a shame because the X-Ex line use to be great.
Indeed, they could just renew XM serious and make this XM2 and everyone will be fine. To me, XE could be redesigned in a way that keeps the traditional look (but with refinement, just like what X100 series keep doing) but embraces the modern technologies inside, then it'd be a flagship EVF XPro or an interchangeable-lens Leica Q.
Price is much lower at $849 than the awesome XE2 which was $1117 (equivalent in today's money), although the XE2S was far cheaper.

It has the same features as the other latest models, you get the same sensor, same processor, same AF speed etc., etc. It is not increased in price, it is cheaper than the X-E3 at launch.
I have an X-E3 and now have the X-E4, you do not speak for me. You do know that Fujifilm have stated that there was higher demand for the X-E4 than they planned for?
@@blood_n_guts_murphy But even if we did take inflation into account, you still need the grip and thump added to the camera to make it equivalent to any of the previous cameras, which brings the price higher.
@@fredbloggs545 The X-E4 has less functionality than any previous X-Ex model. Not only that, it becomes a far harder camera to handle and control now. These are not opinions. They’re objective facts and I won’t argue about that because it’s stupid and a waste of time. What can be argued is if there’s any value in this new camera. I would say, sure. Maybe as a second or third camera in a pack, but zero value as a primary like the previous X-Ex’s could have been. If you’re happy with the shiny new item that’s less functional that your old item, I’m happy for you.

Fuji has a notorious record of not adding new film simulations in cameras "cries in x-t3 and lack of classic neg"
I think Fuji announced that the new film sim is currently only workable with the gfx cameras for now. It wasn’t as simple as not porting it over from what they said but who knows.
@@jonhoward7627 They have said that, and most people don't believe a word they say. It's just a picture profile, couple of curves or a LUT, no different than any one of their other film simulations.
@@problemat1que I think it was to do with the colour accuracy of that film emulation, their reason being it would take more work to archive it on normal x series. It’s not completely ridiculous reason from Fuji in my view, but I get the frustration. Having said that, I think higher end cameras are allowed to have the latest or more alluring features. Some things should be consistent across everything but I don’t think Fuji are doing anything bad here. I would personally like to see cameras that are more expensive like the xpro3 to have something slightly more special about them to warrant spending more. I know it has the hybrid viewfinder, but still.
No Classic Negative on the XT3 is bad, as is the lack of improved focusing on the X Pro 3. Fuji can no longer be trusted to keep same generation cameras mostly equal.

I think I've finally cracked the logic of how Fuji repackages the same guts into various bodies. The X, XS, and XT are a product ladder (entry, mid, prosumer) for people who want a “serious” camera, which decades of marketing have conditioned them to believe MUST have an SLR-style lump on the top. The X100 and X-Pro are for people who wish they could afford a Leica. And this is their influencer camera. It's touchscreen-centric and selfie-friendly, because that's what influencers are used to from phones. It doesn't have lumpy grips, so it will slide smoothly into a statement bag or a compact video rig. And light weight is a priority, because it's going to spend a lot of time on a selfie stick or gimbal (which is also why it doesn't need IBIS.)
It won't make much sense to photo traditionalists (e.g. people who watch these videos) but Fujifilm totally has their eye on the ball when it comes to people who are looking for a multipurpose module they can use to produce social media content.
A compact APS-C camera that has direct access to the three sides of the exposure triangle and not much else makes perfect sense to me. But hey, I'm just a photographer, what do I know...
don't be afraid by Fuji's 8 bit, I came from a6400 and 8 bit in Fuji is a whole different story, much nicer colors and really amazing flexibility for 8bit in post (I only know 8 bit 200mbps on x-t3 , but I assume it's the same 8bit 200mbps on x-s10 and x-e4)
Might overheat though like the XE3 did. And the X100V overheats worse than any Sony as far as I know. Wouldn't surprise me if we start hearing complaints about heat soon for video.
The one thing I think that will kill the X-E4 for some is the viewfinder if you wear glasses.
The X-E3 may be a better buy if you wear glasses, if you can find one in stock anywhere (or even second hand) as it's a bit better for optically challenged folk (like myself)...
Ouch. I didn't know that. That rules it out 100% for me as I went from the 3 to the 2 for the better EVF. Didn't realize this was even worse than the 3. Sony it is then.

Don't bother, MCMP has been whining under every X-E4 video since it was released and keeps saying they are moving to Sony but never does. MCMP is like a stuck record repeating the same over and over.

Fuji sacrificed a lot of usability for the sake of compactness. This is a swing and a miss.
It didn't have to be that way. They could have built in a decent grip (or at least included it in the package as a free accessory), and it wouldn't have killed them to add some eye relief and a back dial. The camera could have still been quite compact.

So it's not the camera for you, well so what? It is for me, I have the X-E4 and like it more than my X-E3. Since pre-orders outstripped supply it is only a "swing and a miss" to people who have no idea how popular it has been. Ask Fujifilm like I did.

You can remove the lens but in addition Fuji can remove all the controls also so how this equates to the X100 I do not know. Getting to be more like a big sensor interchangeable Canon G9X. I will be very sad when my XE-1 bites the dust as that sort of camera has gone for good in this austerity era. Camera development now is very much a case of money wasted on codecs and frame rates incorporated to appease the bloggers. For the still photographer the second hand market is by far the best place to be nowadays. A lot of second hand suppliers give 6 month warranties against usually only 1 year new so the cost against risk is far better for the former and will not reflect current component shortages endemic in affordable new releases, if such a thing will actually exist at all in the future. Olympus give a 2.5 year warranty so that is the only make I would consider buying new now.
Fuji missed the boat with this one, the removal of the back dial alone saved them $1.37 per unit, but cost them thousands of sales. I, like many others(including some well known youtubers), cancelled my pre-order when I saw the control(or lack thereof) layout of that camera.
Yet Fujifilm have stated that pre-orders have outstripped supply. I guess you are in a loud minority.

I find it kind of tough to go with this over an TX-30. The XT-30 has a mode dial and a good thumb grip which makes a world of difference when handling and using the camera. I think Fuji missed the mark a bit by removing some of the buttons I've seen some videos of people switching modes in the camera and it looks like a bit of a pain.
What do you mean by switching modes? I have focus selection in the Q menu, it is quick and easy.

Every time when you buying small Fiji camera - you just spend your money that you can keep for a gain normal camera in one-few month later (full frame Sony/Cannon/Nikon...). I was gonna do like you but the X-T200 was not available at that time. So I waited and waited. Then came my anniversary and my family offered me the difference to get the X-S10...
Just a couple things here and there that bugs me. Owned the XE3 before, the XE4 missing the rear dial, AF mode dial are a deal breaker. If you want the front to be flush, just use the same side switch like the X100V. And why the joystick is not placed higher, middle of the body feels awkward.
I prefer the position of the joystick on the X-E4 compared to my X-E3. More room for your thumb.
