    Born and raised on Oahu......Ive always loved this airport.......my mom would drive me down here from Mililani town to watch airplanes when I was little.....ill never forget it....im 52 now....I also worked at Hertz rental here when I was out of high school.....great memories watching all the planes takeoff and land.

      I can relate, when I was stationed on Oahu I'd go out to a spot on Hickam AFB where the airliners flew right overhead on landing. A beautiful place Hawaii is, I truly miss it. Cheers.

      Ikaika Boiser I lived on a Oahu for year. Wife was military. But I used to take my daughter who was two at the time down to this parking lot right by the runway and watch planes take off for hours every day. That was 11 years ago. And I miss that that was one of my favorite things to do

    Mr. Mullis, Thank you for such an amazing video. I felt like I was actually traveling on this flight, eating the great food, and experiencing the whole Beauty of this flight. For many reasons I have never traveled on the 747, I'm just amazed at her grace. Thank you for providing a wonderful experience!

      This 747 is now retired and on display at the Delta Flight Museum...it is the very first 747-400 model pulled off the assembly line and has flown over 6 million miles with NorthWest and Delta and has flown over 3 million passengers. The plane has now been gutted of majority of seats and now shows its inner workings like cables etc for rducation purposes.

    This is probably one of the most wanted airline routs on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!! Since pilots can only fly about 50 hours a month - 2 of these in a week - and your off for the rest of the month - and if you are up the scale in seniority to get this route - your probably pulling in about $300,000 per year - cause you've been flying with Delta for over 20 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I have some great memories of a trip to Honolulu way back in July of 1976. Totally spontaneous as I was visiting California from Ireland at the time, and someone I was staying with in SF invited me out to stay with their sister on the Island. Awesome !!! I think I went out on United airlines ( Big mostly white Jumbo with some red/orange markings ) , and it was my first time on a 747. I have one especially fun memory of duking it out with lee Majors of Six million dollar man fame, in the disco at the Waikiki Hilton. We were both going for the same gal, and I won !!!! LOL.

    Great and informative video. Just under right hours, not bad for an average airspeed of what...550-560 MPH or so, given the distance run. One thought occurred...the outbound to the island video of what seemed to be same aircraft the interior noise seemed more subdued...engines especially... this inbound to the mainland seems "higher audio noise"...at least comparing the background being heard over the engine noise.

    Enjoyed the video as with all of your videos and it's almost the same as being there myself! I noticed you mention the 747 as being your favorite. Mine was and always will be the L1011. I've watched all of your videos especially the L1011 flights and they really take me back to all of the times and memories I have of flying on Delta and Eastern L1011's ..in a time when flying was fun, the flight crews being very informative and cheerful with a sense of humor they just seemed happy to be there at work. Rarely did you see them being rude or angry to passengers. My, how the times have changed with air travel today along with planes having changed as well. With the exception of the 747-400, most new generation aircraft now flying are uncomfortable, boring with no character at all and basically are just the opposite of the L1011. The Tristar had plenty of character, was roomy and fun to fly on plus of course had that unmistakable sound of those RB 211-22's on startup and takeoff! I remember at cruising altitude how they would always lull me to sleep with that humming drone on those long flights. I especially enjoyed your video of the flight on the L1011 landing in Kahului which I was lucky myself to have experienced that same flight a few times years ago. It is a bird that I truly miss and to me was also one of the most beautiful and spectacular out of all airliners flying back then whether it was parked or in flight. I recall several times being on one of the ATL to SLC, SAN or LAX bound flights and somewhere over the Rockies in the distance off the wingtip I'd sometimes catch the glimpse of an Eastbound L1011 zipping by in a split second headed East in the opposite direction with it's unmistakable "nose up" attitude of which it was so famous for at cruising altitude.The 747 is nice but to me the L1011 will always be my favorite. I've been through storms so harsh and turbulent that you could see the engine swinging and swaying back and forth so violently that I'd wonder if it was going to fall off?! It never did. It's a shame they're long gone now as well as that unmistakable "moan" of one heard around the airport somewhere starting it's engines after pushback from the gate. It was a very unique aircraft with plenty of character and I would book a flight on one every chance I got instead of taking one of the other aircraft just so I could have that unique L1011 experience each time I flew ATL to West coast! Thanks for posting your videos-especially the older ones! Sorry this is so lengthy.

    DeltaOne on the 747s is wonderful. Economy doesn't sound so wonderful with 17.2" seats and 31" pitch (basically the same as what they have on most of their domestic short-haul aircraft.) I like 82" pitch better. :) The 14-hour flight to Seoul and back went by much more comfortably upstairs on the DL 747s than it did in the back on KAL 772s or the CX 77Ws. Granted, I'll still take the back on KAL or CX any day of the week over the back on the DL744s.

    Fantastic video as always!
    When you're a fan of Hawaiian, why you don't fly the long haul route with HA?
    Open air concourse > very cool!
    but that's NOT the typical american safety standard! :-)

    I'm surprised to see a 747 being used for a relatively short Domestic flight, I would have thought a 747 was most efficient at Long-Haul International flights...

    I hope they repaint N661US in its original Northwest livery before it's brought to its new home at the Delta Flight Museum.

      They are old 747s that Delta inherited from Northwest.........including all the Airbus Fleet and Previous Northwest Intent to purchase/conversion orders to present newer airbus products.
      It's the only reason Delta has 747-400s....with Jet-a fuel prices currently low for some....the earlier intention to retire/mothball(by NOW)) the entire 747 Fleet has been delayed for the time being.

      +D McNamara Last I heard was 2017 as the target retirement date. They've already retired some of the fleet with the rest planned to retire in the next 2 years. They had to un-retire one of them, though, after one of the ones still in service got damaged by a hail storm in China and was stuck at Incheon for weeks until they could ferry it back to the U.S. Not sure if they've tried to repair it or if they just sent it straight to the boneyard.

      +vbscript2 Would be nice to see Michael O'Leary buy-up/lease all the early retirement 777s/747s coming-up on the block soon...to start his Transatlantic-Service. He has mentioned Ryanair will need about 70 air-frames.
      Many of the planes coming-up for sale have an easy 15 years of flight-cycles left in them.

    • @vbscript2
      @vbscript2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, Yeah, I can see Ryanair running 40-year-old airframes. That sounds about right.

    • @dmcnamara9859
      @dmcnamara9859 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +vbscript2 Many of the 777s coming up on the Block are only 10+ years old......Moderate-cycle 15+ year-old 747-400 with thorough/routine maintenance can easily go another 15 years. With fuel prices predicted to stay moderately stable,operating an older less fuel-efficient(relatively affordable) wide-body makes sense.
      Market for new/used Large wide-bodies is in a slump. Boeing is so desperate for cash these days......they are selling New 777s for less than a $100 Million. How bad are things at Boeing? FedX only paid $74 Million (each) for all their new-order 767-300Fs
      Mr O'Leary did mention that he would put his plan into action when the next cyclic down-turn happens. Not good for BA/USA/EU Legacy carriers. As Mr. O'Leary likes to point-out his (Non Union) Contract and Company Pilots are the best paid/compensated in the Industry...not to shabby for a "no frills" Carrier.

    It really hasn't changed much since 1993 when I was 11. Less 747's and 777's replaced the DC-10's and L1011's. I though it wuld be diierent since it was my first time bak to HNL since I was 11.
