  • I thought I had all the protection I needed for my tractor's PTO but I may have been wrong. You never stop learning. Let's take a look at the options available and an old component that has made a comeback. The PTO Overrun Clutch. Cheers!

    Who says an old dog like me can't learn some thing new. In my early days I had v-drive circle race boat. The dog engagement between the engine and prop had no slip. I had a Stellings shaft release( maybe called whirl a way ) in line. If you blew/locked the engine at speed, the shaft could still spin. Otherwise the boat could be flipped.

    Pretty much every tractor if not all of them up until the late 50s and early 60s didn’t have a live (independent) pto. Thus they didn’t have a hydraulic or mechanical pto brake. Overrunning clutches are nice so that the movement of the implement doesn’t transfer to the transmission. In the older tractors the pto was driven directly off the transmission, so when that implement was slowing down even with the clutch depressed the pto would essentially backfeed and spin the transmission, pushing the tractor forward, if you didn’t put it in into neutral right away.

  • @noelstractors-firewood57
    @noelstractors-firewood57 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. I never knew about the hydraulic brake on the pto. But I don’t have a new tractor. What I do have is a 1951 TEA20 Ferguson that needs one of those over running clutches. My Ferguson would operate the same as the Ford tractor you showed. And yes, you can not stop if you push the clutch in and stomp on the brake in these old tractors with what’s called a, transmission pto. My 6’ finish mower will continue to pus the tractor forward. Not a nice feeling if your trying to stop in a hurry. The way I get around that is, in normal mowing going from forward to reverse is, I step on the clutch and at the same time I reach down in a inconvenient location and disengage the pto, and every thing stops. But that system is no good for an emergency stop. So I need to get one of those clutches.
    Thanks for the video.
    If your tractor was a manual transmission and not hydrostatic, would it have that hydraulic brake on the pto ?
    Have a great day. 👍🏻🪵🪓🇨🇦

    Hi GP, adding this item to your PTO shaft, increase the total pto shaft length. That means, any vibrations from the drive shaft will double the vibrations energy felt by the pto oil seal or bearing. You should asked to your tractor dealer if your pto futur repair will be cover under warranty.

We never use your PTO break , in our case one you take the PTO Out off gear everything stop in sec . 😊 the big things in the farming equipments is program the computer 💻 to run the equipments right today. No go there with this computer 🖥 junk on stuff , good went it working until we got to get a service guys out for $500 per/ hrs to program the computer to make it work right in the field Gord . Two wk ago lost computer in one off semi feed engine wait to get it took 2 wk had to be program for the engine cost just under $6000 . Like I say computer junk .

    Excellent video and excellent explanation.
    Overrunning clutch or sprag clutches are common in other pieces of farm machinery, for the same reasons.
    Most automatic transmissions have at least one as well. There are overrunning clutches on some alternator drive pulleys as well.

    Not a bad idea getting your sheer bolts from dealer. SOME aftermarket bolts have a different (to high) sheer limit and can lead to damage of implements or continues sheering (to low).

      The only PTO implement I have used on my 2013 JD 1025R is a flail mower. When I disengage the PTO, the hammer drum spins for the better part of a minute. Either my tractor does not have a PTO break, or the implement has some type of release mechanism in it.

    • @HunterWare

      Good day Mr. R. Not sure what kind of tractor you have but just as FYI , Jimmy has been a heavy equipment mechanic for about 27 years and if you do a simple google search on Kubota hydraulic PTO brake, you will see a hole bunch of reference articles come up on various Kubota models that have a PTO brake. Hope that helps my friend - thanks again for watching.

      @@HunterWare Hey thanks for watching - Just FYI - there is . I confirmed it - you can also goole it and find numerous Kubota articles on the PTO brake resident on many Kubota models. Hope that is helpful. Thanks for watching

    • @mr.redneck2715
      @mr.redneck2715 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no, there is no break as such However the PTO clutch the little yellow thing that you turn on the PTO with does slow down your equipment? So therefore it’s called a clutch brake. I would check with your dealer because it’s designed to work that way and it should last you for many many years. I would never put on some kind of archaic peace designed to work on old Ford 8n’s on my equipment without asking the dealer first. No mater what your friend or the mechanic says it’s probably the wrong thing to do.
      Even if it does have another hydronic brake it was designed to Handel whatever you throw at it.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good morning. I have not used the Samurai 4' sickle bar specifically but have used something very similar. Very handy for trimming back the tree overhang down the sides of the driveway, hedges etc and through stalky brush, and for ditch banks that have stalky growth. It won't cut grass just as an FYI. If you are considering it, I would recommend getting the Deluxe mount as it will pivot the sickle bar to a wider range of angles. Grant is a super nice person. It is certainly much easier than walking with a pole saw or hedge trimmer. LOL. Best of luck!

      Good day Joe! Thanks for tuning in. If you look in your RB16 series rear blade manual, you will see the two available hydraulic kits listed in it. I do not believe they make a kit for the RB15 series but not 100% sure. In the manual, on page 9, you will see the two available hydraulic angle kits and parts numbers there. If the Serial Number of your rear blade is 986200 and up, - part # 301-526A. If your serial # is 71126 - 986199 -, then it is part number 301- 425A. Please check this with your dealer, I am pretty sure I read it correctly. Best of luck and thanks for your support!

In anticipation I've been reading the manual and notice that it says "While the loader is installed on the CAB tractor, the liquid ballast in the rear tires should be removed." Any idea on why this is? Seems a bit odd to me. I had told the dealer to install ballast in the tires but now I'm rethinking things. I still have some time to modify this. Hi Gord . If your running a flail mower bush hog on mostly flat ground . The over running clutch adapter is ok . If your backing either mower up a hill this increases double side pressure on your tractor pto shaft . That could snap the pto shaft or take out the bearings in the housing on your pto shaft because of the extra length . Mechanical advantage is a amazing thing when doubled . Wood chippers are killers on the hydraulic clutches on the newer tractors . The overrunning pto adapter will save the pto hydraulic clutch . I had one go bad . It involves splitting the tractor for repair . The part holds the clutch inside from spinning is usally the part that goes . Every time you shut the pto off the stop inside gets slammed eventually wearing down then failing . This causes the pto too keep turning slowly after you shut it off because there is nothing left too hold the clutch and brake assembly . You can buy pto drive shafts with built in over running clutches . Then there is no exstention of the tractor pto for side force in ruff steep mowing conditions . I use the adapter on my wood chipper only . Bush hog and flail are getting pto drive shafts with built in over running clutches because of steep hills . Tractors that do not have mid pto option you have no lever too release the pto too line up the splines so the over running adapter is a great thing in this case .

    It is unfortunate that you have to buy an override clutch just because of a bad design of the tractor.

    Installing an overrun clitch on an independent PTO with a brake... is defeating a safety feature. It kinds of makes the brake completely pointless, if you were to install that clutch though at a minimum make sure it is installed on the implement end, that way the brake will stop your shaft from spinning in the event of an accident. If its not made to install that way... its just plain made wrong.
