- Aquiline Talon Tire Chains. Installation. Kubota LX2610 Compact Tractor. Getting Winter Ready. Part 4. outdoor channel.
I purchased and install a set of Aquiline Talon Tractor Tire Chains on the rear tires of my compact tractor in this last step of getting Winter-Ready. They are a box -pattern, studded set of chains. I can already tell that the box pattern provides a smoother ride on dry, hard surfaces (compared to my old set of H pattern, V-hook chains). It won't be long before I test out the traction performance of these chains in our snowy winter. Cheers!

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you are test-driving the tractor with your chains, I would recommend that you tie up any loose or dangling side chains etc so they are not swinging loosely around under your fenders. Just my suggestion.

Great video. I run chains all year long. I paid $400 + $200 shipping. May be unnecessary, but no yard damage. The ride is certainly rougher.

I think you will need to work a bit to get stuck! :-)
A couple of suggestions, use grease or never seize in the shackle threads, and for the safety wires I like to take some needle nosed pliers and fold the ends over so there isn't a sharp end that can poke through gloves.
They look like a great fit! Those studs are a nice option. Great tip on safety wire on the shackles!
Old man Winter won't be delaying you GP. Those are some very aggressive tire chains my friend. I think I told you when i was ordering my tractor 3 years ago I also ordered a set of tire chains. Their nor nearly as aggressive as yours but here, we don't have very bad winters. As a matter of fact when they delivered my tractor the chains were installed, i took them off and never had any use for them. You definitely have need for them. Hope your weekend is going well.

While I was in the military we used tho air down the tires, put the chains on then air tires back up they would be good and tight.
Thanks R001! A few folks have suggested this to me as well but other folks have also suggested not to deflate the tires. My tires are filled so I figured it was best not to deflate. . Thanks for the comment and suggestion though. Have a great week!

Great chains! I've had a set of these on my Kubota L5030 for years. I leave them on year round. Not as hard on the lawn as you might think. They work good in the woods, and will easily chew up icy driveways. If you plan to park it inside, I would highly recommend that you find yourself some old rubber conveyor belt to drive on. They will quickly eat the cement floor in your garage!

I have have Talons, on my B3350. Wicked gnarly chains, love 'em!
The Talons would not fit, until I also put on the wheel spacers. I wouldn't dare run any type of chains on my B3350, without the spacers.
Wiring the shackles, is an excellent precaution - though my dealer doesn't do that. They use zip-ties, and nothing on the shackles.
After sliding sideways on a few of my ravine/cliff trails lately and nearly soiling myself I think I need to get a set of these lol

Hey, GP...I did the exact thing yesterday. I have a feeling the snow’s going to fly next week, so better do it now instead of in 3 inches of slush. My chains are also very heavy, and slinging over a tire can be exhausting. An oldtimer showed me a trick...just run a rope through the end of the chain and through the wheel...then drive forward. The tied-on chain naturally rolls itself onto the tire. Saves a lot of grunting.

You deflate tire a little bit before you put chains then you inglate it . Its going to be perfectly tight
Great video on tire chain installation for your tractor. The true test will be when you first take the tractor for the run down the concession road without any snow and see if your teeth don't rattle loose like your previous set did on the B2601.
I'd call those chains "aggressive"! Wonderful instructions too! They would be too aggressive for my little Cub Cadet XT1 due to the fact I have an asphalt driveway and walkway. Even with my standard chains they leave superficial scratches on the pavement( my wife always points it out). But on the plus side I can still mulch leaves without tearing up the lawn. I like that chain pattern better then your other pair.
I feel lucky I don't really need chains.. no hills.. I blow a lot of snow but have never had any issues.. I have turf tires and the rears are loaded.. that helps a lot with year round..

So we need to see witch one of us gets enough to blow first... We have already had snow but I let it melt. Hahahaha

Hi Gord ! Wow. The studs on those chains are out of this world. I'm guessing you could crawl up the side of an icy mountain with those. With the weight of your tractor on those metal studs, I just cannot see anything ( even pure ice ) on your worst slope, where you will have any slipping. It just doesn't seem possible. If you need to aerate your lawn in the summer, now you know how to do it haha ! Those chains are what ? about $700 American, so about $15,000 Canadian for us( lol ) but are well worth the $. Great video ! 😁
The r1 tires and rims don't need wheel spacers for clearance, and better traction,good video
Nice looking chains. I wanted to go for the studded set but I cross a paved road so went non studded. What a difference. I put a standard set of double cross link chains on my front tires. Definitely helps when backing up on a incline. I would say chains are the MOST important attachment for 4 season use. Tractors are about useless in snow/ice conditions without chains. If you have a paved driveway your going to see marks from the chains. Better than sliding down a hill or not being able to get up a hill.

My goodness, I looked into a pair for the tractor I ordered and was floored by the price... I did have spacers installed by the dealer just in case I need chains (and for a slightly wider stance), and the Aquiline Talons look like they would outlast me but I'm not sure I will be able to talk the Mrs. (or the "finance committee" as @TractorTimewithTim would say) into an investment like that! Hopefully I will find that I don't need chains 🤞... 🙏!!! Maybe the Aquiline MPCs will work, I don't have the hills you face!

I have Talons for my B3350 and think they are awesome, but find I don't need them in winter. I have a flat driveway, and just 4WD is enough.
If you have traction challenges, I definitely recommend the Talons! I'd guess, they would be very rough on a cement floor.

Nice looking set of chains ⛓ 👌. I need a set of studs would definitely help on ice. I have same dirt/gravel driveway at 1900 feet on a hill. These would help chew up ice when temperatures drop and it turns to a sheet of ice.

I might have missed it, but the shackles should be wired back to themselves, not a neighboring link. The movement between the links could be enough to shear the wire and lose the pin.
Those chains will make WORLDS of difference in the ice and snow.

Hi G.P. I never thought I'd say ( that's a good looking set of chains ) but they are. The years I worked for the power company I used to curse chains. I put on so many sets I disliked them very much. But those are nice chains. Thanks for sharing have a wonderful weekend ole friend
Not sure where you are located, my dislike of chains in Southern Missouri especially on vehicles was the seemingly constant putting on and taking off.
Typically they were not allowed on any state maintained roads and only on gravel county roads. Some days it seemed we spent as much time putting on and taking off chains as we did actual working.

@@GPOutdoors unfortunately tire chains are tire chains and will twist, kink, and fight you. Add to that that it is cold, they ate full of ice and snow and mud, it was never an enjoyable time.

I have 12.4x16 Talons , on my B3350 Kubota with AG tires. I got them ~3years ago, and they install much differently than yours.
Those slant connecting links, look like a great upgrade from my old Talons.
Your Talons fit perfectly, and go on easily - but mine are a total pain to install. Mine are not 'custom fitted' like yours, and require refitting every time I put them on. The two center chain ends, have to be pulled through links, and the ends become side chains. A refit, at every installation.
My bottom line: I think Talons are super-rugged and fantastic for traction - and the newer models like yours, seem MUCH easier to install.
I have read on the tractor forums, that chains should be loose. An excellent chain installation video made by the TRYGG company, states they should have a 'fist' of clearance on both side and tread. Even with the 1.5" spacers on my axles, my Talons would hit the fenders, if I were to run them loose. Tractor chains are fantastic for traction, but for me - have had a steep learning curve.
Morning nano. Thanks for the info - I was not aware . I am surprised about the trig video - I will have to watch it. A fist of clearance on the side and tread seems like a lot of slack. I have always been told that if the chains are installed correctly , you should not need chain tensioners. Like you, if i left that much slack, they would be hitting my fenders for sure, and the pipes and wires under there. Thanks for the info. Cheers!

I am going to watch this vid again closely, and see if I might be able to upgrade my old Talons, to the slant connecting links. It would be great, to have my chains pre-fitted. So far, I have 2 hours invested in mounting my chains, and they aren't ready to use yet.
On a happy note: I am waiting for delivery of my new Igland 3501 winch from Reed's in VT. That's why I am mounting chains this winter. 8^)

An update:
Armed with a fresh perspective and more information (including a closer study of your nice clear video), I finally got my older design Talons installed. I even got brave and cut off the unneeded dangling chain ends. Just tying up the dangles against the working chains, could break something if the dangles got loose. It took a lot of work with the big bolt cutters, to cut the dangles - but it’s great when done.
The chain tensioners, pull the chains to the outside - and create some undesirable slack around the rim. But, it seems the best compromise I can do - as I believe the chains may actually be slightly oversized. I’ll use them as they are, and watch for any issues.
Once I decided to run with what I have, I safety wired the various parts that might loosen. Thanks for that tip!

I always struggle with putting on my tractor chains . I have a larger Kubota than yours and it takes me a couple of hours to get them all set and tight. I have to do it today as snow is in the forecast from Tuesday to Friday this week.

I'll be looking forward to what you think of the difference between these and the Vbars you were running. I just ordered a set of this style chains for my L2501 which is only 2wd so I wanted the best chains available. I have R1 tires so I didn't need wheel spacers, I set the wheels to their widest position.

The studded chains are the way to go for sure. A bit rough and hard on paved surfaces, but you and I don't have to worry about the paved surfaces eh!!! I just bought a 2022 Kubota lx2610 open station from the dealership and my rear tires are 14-17.5, so the tire chains that were recommended for me are different that the ones you bought for your tractor. I need aggressive chains for winters north of Ottawa, so want to be sure I’m getting the best chains possible. Are your rear tires a different size than the ones on my tractor?

Greetings, After watching your previous video on the V Hook H pattern chains you had on your previous tractor I am about ready to hit the go button on them for my B series tractor. Whoo-Hoo, my new B2601 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020)! I'm so excited, its going to be tough to sleep tonight and focus on work tomorrow.
I think I have seen all of your snow blowing videos but do you have any advice for blowing off a gravel driveway? In the past, I've struggled with the walk-behind blower picking up rocks even with the skids set at their lowest setting (raising the cutting edge off the ground) until i get a good base of snow and ice. So, any tips you might have to prevent "relocating" gravel from the driveway to the lawn and woods would be greatly appreciated!
Good morning Domenic! Wow - that's great! I'll bet you barely slept a wink. Only thing I do is like you, I lower the skid shoes to their lowest position ( blower up high) for the first part of the season until I know the ground is frozen. Then I drop it down. It helps but I still catch a bit of gravel from time to time. Enjoy the new tractor today. Cheers and congratulations!
What size spacers did you end up using? I would like to get some for my LX2610, and then get chains to go with them.
Great video as always. I noticed you installed wheel spacers but I don't see the link to them in the description. I have checked with my local dealer and they don't offer wheel spacers. Any suggestions on aftermarket would be great thanks.
My dealer swapped the tires, left to right & right to left. That allowed room for the chains. Prior to that tire swap, the chains rubbed.
OK, Ok. I'm going to try chains on my tractor this winter. In a previous video, you tied the chains through the wheels and drove the tractor forward to apply the chains to the wheels. This time you muscled the chains over the wheels by hand. Is there a reason you changed strategies?

I know you switched tractors , how did you like these compared to the aquiline , I am considering getting the hooks for my L.. I have just cross chains they seem to fall into he tire lugs

Hey. Skeets! For me none at all. I have a size 9 1/2 boot and I didn't have any trouble with it. I have not had a tractor with separate pedals before but what I liked about the treadle pedal is that I had to make a positive motion to enact forward or reverse direction. People have differing opinions or preferences. Good luck and all the best with the new tractor!
Hello from Manitoulin Island. Got the front blower installed with out too much difficulty thanks for you're advise. What I'm finding is that if I have to make any kind of turn, while plowing, the blower wants to pull the tractor forward not allowing the tractor to turn. I assume I may need chains however, not sure chains on the rear tires will solve this problem. Do you have any experience with chains on the front tires? Checked out your link tirechainsrequired and see they are located in Maine. Can't seem find a Canadian distributor, are you aware of one?

Hi Bryan. That still happens to this d with the B2601 and now with my LX. I have to slow down as I am approaching the corner, then I start turning the wheels very slowly. and I make the turn. If I try to turn the front wheels too late into the corner, she keeps going straight. I have two really poorly graded corners on the driveway. At both those corners, I pop the blower out of "float" for a few seconds and lift it slightly off the ground, just enough so the 550 lb weight is on the front tires and then it turns no problem, then drop it back into float. Aquiline has no distributor in Canada yet for chains ( they do for big forestry equipment/loggers). You are correct - rear chains will not help with turning, however using your split rear brake pedals will. You brake one side and it will help turn the tractor through the corner as well. Hope that helps!

Morning Sunjay. I went two winters with no chains. After a few occasions that I could not get up the hills on the driveway, including seeing Guy's smiling face as he pulled me up the hills with a set of chains and his L3400 (LOL!), I realized I had to have them. Plus, I had a lot of subscribers advising me to get them for safety and for secure traction in the ice and snow. Night and day difference for sure. Hope things are going well out on the new property. @@GPOutdoors I'm starting my second winter with my B2650. I have a very similar setup to you, a 63 inch snow blower up front and I keep my BH77 backhoe on the rear for weight and have found I have never needed chains. I'm guessing the major difference is the type of snow we get up here in Thunder Bay vs where you are. My snow tends to be cold and dry so I have never had any issues with traction even when blowing snow last year up the hill into my camp. Wondering if you can confirm my thoughts. You're definitely ready for winter. Cheers

@@GPOutdoors Good morning, front wheel spaces definitely available. I bought a set for my B2630 from Richard at Brotek, Canadian made, shipped in days. I wanted to widen the stance of my tractor as well as wanting them for the rear with buying chains in mind. Fronts probably not as important on larger tractors but with the smaller ones the front of the tractor acting as a pivot is what leads to the sphincter twitch we have all learned to avoid. Hey, yes I noticed the same thing, there doesn't seem to be an option to ship to Canada....
@@mattcharlesbent I called them and they will do a direct ship from their supplier to Canada. Shipping charges are expensive though roughly $200 USD (it includes the tax and duty)
Im curious if you have come across situations where you felt the need for chains on the front as well. In your experiences driving in snow/ice, does the front bite in well enough while in 4 wheel drive so that it does not slide and/or affect steering? Would appreciate your thoughts. Really enjoy your channel G!
Good day David. Yes, chains or studs on the front would be helpful. Sometimes I do find when the blower is down in "float", and the surface is icy or slippery , it will slide as I turn such that I have to lift the blower up to get weight back on the front tires - the B2601 did the same thing.
dont tighten the chains so much. Your fist should fit under the side links, and under the cross links. You get more traction this way, and less wear on your tires.
